How to import a PNG with alpha?

I have some images I made in photoshop (on my PC) that have a transparent background. I exported them as a 24 bit PNG with a alpha channel. Importing to my ipad through itunes as a photo seems to loose the alpha channel. How do I use alpha in Keynote? This is a very basic function - what am I doing wrong?

First off, Thank you to Iwell, skers1 and Kyn Drake for your help. I also found an unlikely work-around since posting my question. It's an app called myPhone Desktop (universal binary). It will let you copy a phone #, text, url or image from your desktop (pc/mac) and sends that to your iPhone/iPad/iTouch! Best of all, it supports image alpha! Very quick and simple. • Sudden problem with importing tiff files with alpha channel (CS5)

OK this is driving me nuts. For years I have been importing image files that have an alpha channel  into FCP as.tiff files. I use Photoshop files only when I want to use the layers as they are too cumbersome otherwise). I have recent upgraded Photoshop, etc. to CS5 and now FCP won't import them anymore. I get a message saying: "File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"
I am not doing anything different and tiff files created in just the same way in an earlier version of Photoshop import and work just fine. Is this a CS5 bug? Does anyone know of a work around. I want to keep using tiff files as they seem to work best for me with alpha channel work (and I don't see why I need to reinvent the wheel).
    Thanks
    A

I've had a similar issue recently. Same TIFF files downloaded from the same server, different FCP project, new error. I either see"File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown" or I get the even stranger, "Unrecognized file type."
I can open them in PS and save them again as TIF, same results. I know these are not CMYK files but even if resave the TIF as RGB, I get the same results, they are not recognized by FCP.
But if I open them in PS and save them as PNG with alpha, they improt fine.
I have no idea what's going on.

  • Export selected item as PNG with Alpha

    Hello.
I'm building game graphics in Illustrator.  I have thousands of individual sprites to export, up until now I've been copying and pasting in Photoshop and exporting through there, but that is tedious and slow.  Inkscape has an option to export the selected object only as a PNG with alpha, pixel dimensions are equal to the current selection size.  Perfect.  But that means using Inkscape and quite frankly it's horrible to use.
I'm sure this must be possible, but for the life of me I can't find a working method.  I found Windows scripts for CS3, but nothing for CS5 on Mac.
    Can anyone help?

Should not be too hard to adapt the script for Mac, assuming it is JavaScript, not VBScript. If you can point to the source, someone might be able to fix it for you (also post in the scripting sub-forum). Other than that you can of course always make use of the slice tool and fit the slices to the objects, then export the slices.

  • Can no longer import QT files with alpha channel

I have been using these client supplied QT with alpha channel files just fine for weeks, then all of a sudden, after a crash the other day, I was unable to open sequences with these files and exoprt them, the exporter would just freeze.  the clips played in the timeline, but VERY sluggish.
On the reccomendation of a few posts around here, I removed the clips from the project, and now I cannot import them back in, I get a "the importer reported a generic error" message.  I am able to open in QT pro and export to a new file that will import to PPro, but I lose the alpha channel.
As always, I'm up against a deadline and any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have installed QT 7.07, no help.
I'm on a windows 7 machine running CS master collection 5.0, Quad core AMD with 8 gig RAM.
These files worked fine just days ago!!!!
BTW, I just switched over to Premiere a few months ago and to honest I can't understand how anyone would stick with this buggy software, as a professional I've never used anything this bad before.

    Welcome to the forum.
Try these.  Attempt to re-import after each one:
Clean the media cache database via Edit | Preferences | Media
If step 2 doesn't work, then find all the .qtindex, .mpgindex, .cfa and .pek files associated with the media that's supposed to be in your project and delete them.  Then clean the media cache database again.
Launch Pr and while it's launching, hold down the Alt + Shift keys until the Welcome screen appears.  Alt resets your preferences and Shift resets the plug-in cache.
To address the other issues you say you've been having with Pr, you should start a different thread (or threads).  Coming from other editors, there may be a difference in the way Pr does things that produce unexpected results that may be seen as bugs.  More serious issues, such as crashes, can often be caused by 3rd-party hardware like AJA, Matrox or BlackMagic and the associated drivers.  Outdated or incorrect drivers for audio and video cards can also cause problems.  I recommend that you start troubleshooting those areas first.
Other issues may have workarounds.  If you have serious, reproducible problems that have no workaround, then please file bug reports here:

  • Targa sequence, how to import it only with Final Cut

Anyone knows how to import a targa sequence, without first making it a quicktime movie with QTPP(pro)?
I know the method of the 1 frame duration of a still, I want the final cut to recognize the targa sequence as a SEQUENCE...
Is that too much too ask from such an editing platform like Final Cut? I hope NOT

    do not have QTPP
    I read about that way
any way to do it without QTPP?
normal QT does not allow me to export in alpha channel...as my graphics are supposed to play on top of shots not on their own...
I'm desperate, have to deliver the project 2 days from now and I'm not good in compromising with anything at all...
    thanks you in advance...

  • OUTPUTING AS PNG WITH ALPHA??

    Hello to everyone...
I hope someone can give helping hand...
I'm working on a project where I need to output single frame files as PNG's with Alpha channel.  So far, I've used the "save frame as" function and then selected "file".  In the Render Queue under output module, I selected PNG sequence.  In the output settings under video output, I selected RGB + Alpha and Millions of colors +   I also selected "interlaced" under format options as the files are for web.  But when I open the single frame in Photoshop, the ALPHA channel is not there.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?  I know that PNG's can be saved with an Alpha I just can't seem to make it work.
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Bgub.

Define work area if rendering in portions, then go  "add to render queue" instead of "save frame" and modify output module to PNG Sequence RGB+Alpha, Millions of Colors+
PNG+Alpha still work here for me in CS3. Maybe Adobe removed support for outputting PNG Still Image Seuquence with Tranparency. I would not wonder because they often toss functionalities, only god knows why they're doing it.
    Otherwise use TIFF Sequence

  • FCPX is doing funny things to PNGs with alpha channel.

I am currently working on a video that requires lots of compositing using PNGs with transparency. Everything was fine, until I decided to render. Then this happened:
Some of the PNGs turned into a bunch of pink blocks, as if the file were corrupted. It even happened with a PNG with no transparency-=
    I've tried:
    Trashing Render Files
    Changing Alpha Handling
    Export without Render
Using "Add" as the Blend Mode.
    What can I do?

I suggest you begin by deleting preferences, as so many weird things seem to be caused by corrupt preferences.
You can also try creating a brand new project, composite a few pngs and check if the weirdness also occur there; if it does not, then maybe there was some corruption in the project, in which case selecting everything and pasting into a new project may cure it.

  • How to import a png file to imovies ?

    hey guys!
if someone could help me on this.
I have managed to import a png file by drag and dropping in on top of my video and having the advanced tools on i have the choice of placing my png within the picture. that works fine and plays smooth. however when i add another png file to another frame the parts with a png layer on top do not play...
does anyone met this as well?
any suggestions?what do i do wrong?
it would mean a lot if someone could help i have a deadline tmr morning!!
    thanks,
    Anna

You can tell the aspect ratio of your project by clicking FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES.
You can tell the dimensions of your PNG file by right-clicking it in the Finder and selecting Get Info. You should see the dimensions of the PNG. You can divide the longest dimension by the shortest dimension to find the aspect ratio. For example, 1920 divided by 1080 is the same as 16 divided by 9, which can also be written as 1.78

  • How to import a album with multiple artists in the one album?

How do I import a album with multiple artists as the one album.  Everytime I try to do this it does not collate it into one album, the other artists come up seperatley, also if this is possible can you set so that it works automatically everytime?
    Hope someone can help.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • How to import a table with renamed name

If I want to import a table from a DMP on UNIX towards my user where I already have a new version but I don't want to drop this new version 'cause I have only to move some records from one to the other, is there an import option for importing the table with another name? I mean I want to import on the same user, where there already exists the table MYTABLE, an old version of MYTABLE by impoting it with the new name MYTABLE_OLD, so afterwards I can update MYTABLE with some of old records of its old versione MYTABLE_OLD. Is it possible?

    You cannot directly do this.
You can import the Table into a different schema and then rename the table.
export and import back into the required schema.

  • How to import Spacial Data with mapviewer into Database?

    Thanks,

If its the Oracle Spatial option you're after, its not included in XE http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/license.102/b25456/toc.htm#BABJIJCJ
For GIS data, I'll be no help at all someone else here may have experience with it. If its something that can fit into RDBMS tables there is probably a way to do it without Spatial, but that's just a guess :(

  • Import image seq with alpha ?

    Hi again,
Im trying to import in FCP an image sequence (tiff or tga) with alpha channel and i cant..I look in the manual and it says that i must first go to quicktime to convert to mov etc but what ill do with alpha channel ? i need it cause the seq is from a vfx..
    Any suggestions ?

you need to export the movie out from Quicktime Player using a codec that supports an alpha channel. built-in, you can use Apple's "Animation" codec but thats a seriously heavy codec to work with, instead you may want to download a third party codec to use as an intermediate
Avid's Quicktime codecs have alpha support and are freely available from their website

  • Why can't I export a 24 bit PNG with alpha transparency?

I have just upgraded my Macromedia Studio 8 to Adobe CS3, and
it seems that I still can't export a 24 bit png with transparency
from Fireworks (Photoshop can do it, but it's just not suited for
volume graphic production). Anyone know something I don't, or can
someone at least explain why I can have alpha transparency on 8 bit
and 32 bit, but not 24 bit pngs? Currently, I'm planning to export
everything from Fireworks, then batch-process through Photoshop to
reduce from 32 bit to 24 bit, which is just... gah! Words fail
    me.

If I'm correct, 8-bit png supports index transparency just
    like GIF's
do. 32-bit png's support alpha channel transparency, so you
    can get
variable or partial transparency in a full color image(8 bits
    for each
color and 8 bits for an alpha channel) and 24-bit png's are
    similar
jpegs, only you get lossless compression and no user-defined
    settings.
So essentially, when you export a 32-bit png file you are
    exporting a 24
bit color image with an 8-bit alpha channel.

  • How to save a PNG with layers in Photoshop.

i am tryin to save a PNG with layers. Is it poosible ?
What i found on the net is ....PNG is not meant for multiple layers. But still want to know if photoshop have its own proprietory standard for PNG.
    Thanks in advance.

    No, it is not possible.
    PNG doesn't support layers.
A few apps stuff their own private data into PNG to hide layer data, but well, it's private undocumented data.

  • How to save a png with a straight or fat alpha?

Long story short, work in broadcast and a new piece of gear prefers png files.  I know how to save png's with a transparency, that's not the problem.  What I don't know how to do or if it's possible is to save them with a straight or fat alpha.  Right now we feather or extend the edges out past the alpha of say a logo and save it as a tif, psd or .tga.  That way once it's keyed over video or whatever, the edges look good, no black bad edging.... this makes sense, probably not explaining it very well.   But switching to png files I have no idea how to make a straight or fat alpha since it sees transparency.  I mean if I feathered out the edges, a png will see that correct, since there's no alpha??
I hope this makes sense ?

Chris, this is probably the answer I seek "PNG always saves with straight color - that's how the PNG spec defines it."
I admit my explanation was a bit weak and I understand PNG only supports transparency, which is not an alpha,  and the apps aren't treating them wrong....I just couldn't formulate an intelligent question and explain it, my bad.
After thinking about it I don't think using a PNG will work. RIght now for broadcast gear/applications if we don't fill the transparent and semi-transparent areas of an image with the colored part of the image, we usually end up getting a dirty key/matte or a lot of fringing.  So when using a .tif or .tga that reads an actuall alpha, we can fix the issue by doing what I described.  In fact we use a quick little plugin from flaming Pear called "Solidifty" to speed up the process http://www.flamingpear.com/download.html .  With that said, I know we can't do the same steps with a png because it only sees transparency, but I guess I was wondering if there was a work-around or a trick to fix that issue.  I could be wong, but doesn't a png save with white ?
But again, as I thought about it, I think i'm asking for something it's not meant to do, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Thanks Chris, does this make more sense or more confusing?  The bottom-line is I don't think it will work.
