Hi I have a unit that took my vhs tapes to dvd and now I am trying to import the dvd in to imovie so I can edit. but I can not get the dvd to import. would appriecate any help

Try download this free program called Handbrake
You can export your DVD to a .mp4 using Handbrake, and then use the .mp4 by importing it into iMovie.

I would argue that transferring the movie to another medium for *your own personal use* is covered under "fair use", but of course I am not a lawyer. The law that you may be breaking would be the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Read up:

This would have to be one of the bug bears of iTunes: you can put a music CD in your Mac's optical drive and iTunes asks if you want to import it, but will not do the same for a movie you already own and want to watch on your Mac using iTunes!
I haven't bought a DVD for years, and happily buy movies, or rather, when at home rent them from the iTunes Store.
The only way to get movies onto your iPad is to buy movies from iTunes and sync the iPad (make sure you have ticked the sync movies option in the iTunes device settings AND tick only the movies you want in the movies list) or buy movies via the iTunes app on your iPad, or do stuff that is illegal.

If you are refering to a project from iMovie, you wuld do your editing, finalize it, push in a blank DVD-R, (set finder preferenes, General before hand to to show CD's, DVD's, Ipods on desktop. do a slow double click (about 1 secind between clicks on the "untitled DVD" and it should the allow you to type in a name.
Then click share in the menu bar and select the "export As: select the name
Where: select the DVD, click Export..

Can anyone please tell me how to copy a home made movie from DVD to my hard drive? I'm trying to add it to Apple tv, and it's in a TS format and I can do nothing with it. I mean, when I made it, I made a beginning, which my titles are sitting on. And I want to keep the part that is the beginning, and then be able to choose which title I want to see, but I can't get anything to copy the beginning, only copies the three videos. It's very important to have this beginning, or whatever it's called while I choose a title. I was told to copy the DVD to my hard drive, but it won't copy. Now what?

I just purchased the new 30 GB video iPod last week, and although I have already purchased a few movies from the iTunes store, I wanted to know if there was a way to import a DVD movie from my own DVD library like we can with our own music CDs?

About "legally owning" the DVDs - Yes, I understand, and I'm figuring that most folks who want to put their DVDs onto their iPod are owning the movies legally (or, at least, it appears so).
That's not really the issue here, though.
The problem is, there is an encryption that is written onto regular, copyrighted DVDs (i.e., movies). In order to get that onto your iPod, you will have to use software on your computer that breaks that encryption, and makes the file into some more "normal" format, like say, MP4.
This action can arguably be considered as illegal, in a sense, since you are removing the encryption that's on DVD, which is protecting it from being easily copied, and transferred around. (which would be illegal).
This is a bit different than CDs, since, although they are copyrighted too, the songs are usually not in a protected format.
If you have a song that you've purchased from the iTunes Store, and you want to break into that "protected" file format, that's the same kind of issue as the DVD ripping.
(Notice that the Hosts included that into the ADUA as well, right along with DVD ripping.)

First let me say I do not intend to rip a movie off a DVD.
My source footage is from a family DVD, I would like to know how to import selected parts of this DVD to use as material for editing, naturally I also want the audio to import with it.
Any advice on how to do this would be most welcome.

They must be in mp4 format. With quicktime pro, you can convert videos to the file type that itunes will recognize and that will play on the video ipod...

If you want to import them into your iPad without using iTunes you can get an Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit. Otherwise you can first import them into your computer then from your computer to your iPad using iTunes. Once they are on your iPad you can run them from the Videos app on your iPad.

Sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here. Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie for use on computers and portable devices. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature. Walmart/Vudu also has a service that basicially gives you a digital copy of a DVD you already own. See:

If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. Once converted, you just drag the movie into the iTunes window on your computer and you can then sync it to your iPad.

I have an I-Mac and have imported a movie from my Camcorder, I have edited the Movie and have it ready to burn to DVD but can't figure out how?

You need to use an App to burn a movie to DVD. Apple's "iLife" disk which they used to sell and may be available somewhere contains "iDVD" which is very good. "Toast" is a 3rd party product that is good that you can buy, though pricey. And finally, you can search the Mac App Store for an App to burn disks with.
