How to import a video from a DVD

I'm trying to edit a video that was created and put on a DVD.  The video plays but I can't seem to import the video into iMovie for editing.  What do I do to get this video into iMovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion:
From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

  • How do you import music videos from a dvd into iTunes?

I have got a music cd and includs a music dvd. I want the music videos to be imported into iTunes so I can watch them on my iPod touch. How do I do this?

I had a friend who got a dual-format music album on DVD of the band Chicago for his birthday. He didn't have a system that could play the remixed 5.1 surround sound version on the DVD, but he could play it back in his Mac OS X on the DVD player in good old stereo. However, he wanted a copy he could play in his car CD player.
So I used Audio Hijack to record the output of the DVD played back as stereo through the Apple DVD player in Mac OS X. I had Audio Hijacj write the output to the hard drive as AIFF 16-bit 44.1KHz stereo. Then I used iTunes to burn it to a CD.
Of course it took 45 minutes to make a recording from a 45-minute audio program; it happened in real-time.
(This was all perfectly legal because he owns the DVD and he's using the CD recording as a backup audio copy for his own personal use--basically like ripping a CD you own for use in your iPod).
I did an a/b comparison between the original DVD and the AIFF recording I had generated, and I was pleasantly surprised by its good quality.
Since then I've been an Audio Hijack fan.

  • How do i save video from mini dvd to mac

i have connected my sony dvd video recorder to my mac mini and can view the movie but it wont let me save the video to the mac.  Is there a software that i need purchase?  How can this be done sense i can't use a mini dvd with mac cd drive?

What program is this that you're using to play the video?
If you can "see" the Sony device on your desktop, you might just open it and locate the movie files there, and drag them to a folder on your Mac to copy them over. But iMovie should be able to import them for you.

I have done this for someone else with Tape Deck coax out through USB if you have installed a TV USB application such as Hauppauge WinTV HVR; recording with TV App which is rather tedious.
Check out these - you may find better ways to do it depending on camcorder.

  • Can you import video from a DVD?  If so how

Can you import video from a DVD? I have some home DVD's made on my PC. My PC program (Roxio) allowed me to pull clips off of a DVD, but I can not seem to figure out how to do it with iMovie on my Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, I'll see if I can help. The only way I know of importing directly from iMovie off of a DVD is with a converter box hooked up to an external DVD player. However there are a few freeware programs you could try. One is Handbrake, with it you can convert your DVD into a MPEG-4 file, this is incredibly easy however the quality will be a little lower than that of a DVD. Another program is MactheRipper which will rip the entire DVD onto your hard drive but you will have to hunt through all the files to find the ones you want. I hope this helps.

I use my iphone 5 to record home videos. I have an apple tv but dvd burners dont have a hdmi plug in. Any suggestions on how i can burn videos from iphone 5?
I had a av cord that plugged into the iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 but its not compatible with the 5 connector. Right now i have to email myself the videos in small segments and open and save on the iPad 2 to burn them.  Is there an easier way to burn these from my iPhone 5 or through air play on apple tv?
    Thanks

Connect the phone by USB to the computer, import with image capture, iPhoto or whatever application you use to import movies, drop it into iTunes.

  • How to make a highlight video from a DVD?

I want to make a highlight video from a dvd.  How do I get this dvd into iMovie?  I tried the import feature but I am getting an error stating it doesn't see any movies on the DVD.

Video calling is a feature offered by your service provider.  You'd first have to sign up for the service then you'd need a phone that supports it.  Currently, I'm not aware of any BlackBerry phone that supports it.  The Chinese movie you saw might not have been technically accurate.  Case in point, I saw the Green Hornet movie recently and he has a car that does loads of cool things.  Turns out, if you watch the DVD extras, most of those stunts were fake.

  • Importing my video from my event library into my project library, it shows the full width of the clip, but on the viewing section, it's zoomed in and cut the sides of the video off.  How do I stop this from happening?

When importing my video from the event library to the project library, it's zooming in and
narrowing the width of my footage.  How do I stop this from happening?

In the project, double-click on the clip to open the Clip Inspector. In the Clip tab you will see an item about two thirds down labelled "Stabilization". If checked, uncheck the box "Smooth clip motion".
Stabilizing clips causes a zoomed in effect, with the extent of the zoom dependent upon how shaky the footage is. There is a slider beneath the check-box labelled "Maximum Zoom" - this can be draggged back and forth to adjust the zoom effect if desired, once the clip has been stabilized.
You may have chosen to analyze clips for stabilization when importing to iMovie (that's a choice provided by iMovie upon import). If so, it's best to turn off an option in iMovie's preferences. Go to this from the iMovie menu item iMovie>Preferences. Click on the Browser tab and deselect (uncheck) the box labelled "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed".
I prefer to import clips without analyzing, as this speeds up the import process. Afterwards, in the Event you can check for any overly shaky clips, then analyze them in the Inspector. If necessary, once dropped into a Project, you can stabilize them as desired. You can also stabilize clips directly in the Project without having to first analyze them in the Event.
