How to import .AVI Files to IMOVIE, or burn them to DVD directly.

I downloaded a .avi video file from the internet. I want to burn it to a DVD so I can watch it on my DVD player. So what do I do? Can I burn it directly to a DVD? if so, how? Or Do I have to put it in IMOVIE and burn it from there? If it's through IMOVIE, how do I get the .avi file in, because I tried to, and it says its to big I need to cut it in segments using Quicktime pro, which I don't have.
Please someone help me, let me know what is the easiest thing to do.
Thankyou

Rats.
OK, bring it into iMovie. This will convert to DV (usually making the file much larger). iDVD reads DV files.
If the movie is longer than about 9 minutes, you may need to split it:

  • Trying to Import AVI file to iMovie - Error -8969

Like some others before me, I too am having trouble importing .avi files to my iMovie version 4. Acccording to Command i, they are Motion JPEG OpenDML (they are .avi files from a Canon digital camera). They are viewable in QT. Several posts suggest they should import easily into iMovie. However, when I try to import, I get an error message (failed -8969). I tried converting the .avi file, with QT Pro, to both .mov and DV stream. It will convert to .mov, but when I try to import to iMovie, I get the same error message. I don't even get that far with DV: when I try to convert to DV stream, I get the same error message immediately. Any suggestions? Are there any plug-ins that would fix the problem?

    "codecBadDataErr = -8969"
"Codec : acronym for "compression/deccompression" , is an algorithm, or specialized computer program, that reduces the number of bytes consumed by large files and programs."
Used for video files, AVI, QuickTime and otherwise.
Conclusion: You got a bad file.
Come to think of it. I seem to remember a driver (or codec) that can be downloaded from Canon. Don't know any details, though.
PS. Please don't post your question twice.

I'm having unkown errors importing any of my avi files into imovie all of a sudden. I have imported these files to make movies previously (all the files are straight from my Canon digital camera).

    Muddguts,
did you discover why you received an import error message? I'm getting the same thing and I don't know why.

    Hi Lennart,
Thanks for your reply. First of all, please forgive me that I am a dummy in computer. My .avi file contains a video converted from a DVD (.vob file) by a software "XRay4". The "codec" when converted (I could see from the export window) is "XVID". The file name extension after converted contains ".avi". Thank you so much.

  • Importing AVI file into iMovie

I converted an .m4v file (13m31s long) to an .avi file so I can import it into iMovie for editing. All of this completed, I opened iMovie, went File > Import > Movies > ___.avi file. It showed the importing progress, and once it was completed nothing showed up anywhere! I tried 3 times, restarted my computer, updated iMovie, NOTHING! Please help :[

Yes I did try to import the .m4v file first. I used Prism to convert the video file to AVI. I am not entirely sure how to answer your question about the codec, but I believe it is an MPEG-4 ?

  • Importing .avi files to iMovie

Can someone please help me on importing .avi into imovie.... i have tried alot of things i have used toast but for some reason the dvd wont work inmy dvd player... i have used quicktime mpeg stream.. ffmpegx.... and the closest i have gotten is just a white screen when its up loaded through quicktime and when i convert it to dv format for imovie is just the audio but no picture. So can someone please help me i been tring for lik the last 3 weeks so can some1 please help ??????????
    thank you

problem with .avi is, it is just a container, some say "wrapper"... the box is nice, but what kind of chocolate is in it?
in the PC world, they have many codecs and formats, no man has ever heard of.... many avi contain divx, a free decoder you get here:
    http://www.xvid.org/
but it does not support all divx.......-
you would need QTpro, just to get a glimpse, what is inside... flip4mac is for .wmv files.. which is in this case not the problem... probably...
when you open that avi with ffmpeg, what does it say on page one, the info window....?

  • How to import AVI files created in Adobe Premier Elements 2?

I have captured video in Adobe Premier Elements 2 on my PC from my Canon Optura camcorder. I have a few hundred small .avi files that I need a friend to import into his Final Cut Pro so they can be edited along with other footage that he has created. What is the best way to do this? Should I output a different file type from Adobe to make it easier for him to import?
    Thanks in advance.

No, it would be easier to give him the camera and let him capture natively.
    bogiesan</div>
Unfortunately the clips are dispersed throughout many tapes so it is not reasonable for my friend to capture directly from the tapes.
I'm new to video editing and I don't know what format is recorded by my camcorder. Reading in this forum indicates that the .AVI files are just "wrappers". Is the compressor part of Final Cut? Would he be able to convert the files? Is it a problem if the time codes are lost. Can I do anything else in Adobe to make the conversion easier?
Sorry for all the dumb questions.

  • How to import dmg files into imovie

    Hi,
I copied home movies that were on DVD's onto my desktop. They all came in as a dmg format. How do I get these into imovie so I can start creating projects using the various footage from them?  Help!  Thanks!

Ah you didn't mention that you had a Video DVD, that's an important bit of information.
A DVD that was made to be played on a DVD player has a very different format form one made for a computer. In order to access the content of the DVD o you will need to convert or rip the DVD. Please realize that if the DVD is a commercial DVD (or a copy of one) then it is protected by DRM and you will not be able to rip it and also it is against the TOU here on ASC to discuss the ripping of commercial DVD's. Apple will pull your account here is that is the case.
So with that in mind you can rip the DVD using something like HandBrake
