I have just inherited an iPhone 4 and I want to import contacts from a vcf type file from my previous mobile. Can anyone help with some ideas?

If you have the contacts on the phone you can sync the phone to the computer. The contacts should then show in address book. At this point you can sync the address book data to iCloud. You have to make sure the iCloud account is setup on the computer and this will not work unless the computer is running 10.7.2 of course. There are other ways to add the contacts to iCloud like through the phone but the phone must be running iOS5. If it is you can simply add the cloud account to the phone and toggle the contacts slider. You will get a prompt to keep or delete the contact data. Of course you keep. Then you will get a prompt to merge at which point you do. This should merge the contacts on the phone with iCloud. Hope this helps.

This usually works:
Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (they will still be in iCloud).
Download the app My Contacts Backup. Use this to backup the remaining contacts on your phone (from your exchange account) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself. Confirm that you have received the email.
Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.

Microsoft Office is not a problem, you have the license key for it so it's just a matter of getting it installed and using the old key.
If you have a newer OS X verison that won't run the older Office version, then usually there is a upgrade fee to install the newer, more compatible Office version.
You can't use the old verison copied to the new drive, it's copy protected and you won't get all the parts anyway.

I assume you already have the drive in the machine.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
Connect the computer via Ethernet cable to the router.
Hold the command option r keys down and boot the computer up.
Open Disk Utility and select your disk0 drive on the left and click Partition.
Choose Partition Layout 1, click the box and click Option: GUID Format: OS X Extended Journaled Name: MacintoshHD click Apply.
Click on Erase tab move slider one spot to the right (Zero) click Erase and go take a rest and let it complete.
If the Zero fails the drive is bad, return it.
Once completed check #4 is correct as shown.
Quit Disk Utiltiy and choose install OS X. If there is no place to install it, quit and do #4.
Install OS X onto the MacintoshHD partition with your AppleID and password. Quit and reboot.
Setup your machine. Upgrade to a later OS X verison in AppStore if you had it.
Use a SATA to USB adapter to your old drive.
Select the drive and Finder > Get Info and at the bottom select "Ignore Permissions on this volume"
Copy your files over and avoid any corruption areas.

Trying to import my huge amount of PalmOS contacts into my Peak, there seems to be no way of opening/importing a .vcf file into FFOS "contacts". Could this be accomplished by any other way? If not, is it a difficult coding effort to enable "contacts" to read (composed) .vcf files?
You know, nobody wants to enlist on facebook just to transfer their contacts to FFOS...

- use iTunes
- choose your iPhone and go to the INFO tab
- tick sync contact then sync
for Mac OS Mavericks:
- update both devices and iTunes then follow the same steps above.

Error when importing contacts as VCF to iCloud

I started with an empty iCloud. I had a file with 250 contacts, format is VCF 3.0. I imported the file, no error message.
Result: 15 contacts shown in iCloud, 250 contacts pushed to IOS. The 15 contacts shown in iCloud are those with a birthday in it.
I created a dummy contact without birthday, exported it to VCF, and imported it to iCloud: no error message, contact is pushed to IOS but not shown in iCloud.
I load the dummy-VCF-file in notepad, put a birthday at the right position, saved it, and imported it to iCloud: contact is pushed and shown.
On iPad, I took one of the 235 non-birthday-contacts and changed it (put a blank behind the name): contact is synced and shown in iCloud, even there is no birthday in it!
Beyond that: when I feed the 250-contacts-VCF to WindowsAddressBook, 248 are imported (with or without birthday) and 2 are not (duplicated name).
Obviously this is an error in the iCloud import module. I'm looking for a way to cause iCloud to show those non-birthday-accounts, but without
a) writing a dummy birthday in each VCF record and
b) writing a blank in each contact on IOS
Any ideas?

There is about 2TB of free space on the drive with the destination library.
And how much free disk space is on your System drive?
If repairing the libraries does not help, check your system for software, that might be leaking memory, probably incompatible plug-ins or older applications, preference panes, drivers that need updating,
If you find evidence of a precess leaking memory, ask in the Mavericks forum.
