How to import DVD friend made on Tivo so I can edit in iMovie HD6?

The DVD will play in my G4 Powerbook's DVD player but won't import into iMovie. I have several important DVDs that my friend recorded with Tivo (I don't have Tivo myself) and I need to edit them in iMovie, so I'd be totally grateful if someone could advise me. Thanks!

The standard format of a DVD is mpeg2 which is a final delivery format not intended for editing. The files on the DVD will need converting.
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • How to import DVD+VR (full res.) into iMovie HD?

I created the disks from old VCR tapes using a Lite-On DVD Recorder and now I want to edit them (full res.) and burn them back to DVD. This is one of the main reasons I purchased this comp. (sales clerk said it would do it "No problem") I've tried a couple different programs but it always comes out pixelated. This is my first Mac and everything else works great.

Creating a DVD has already seriously compressed your VHS footage, so you can't edit at full resolution. The best way to use iMovie to convert VHS to digital is to use a miniDV camcorder as a pass-through between VCR and Mac. This will get your footage imported at the best resolution. You can edit in iMovie, send to iDVD to finish and compress to DVD format.

You can convert yor DVD files into something that iMovie can handle, but you will have to get additional software for the conversions. Also, your quality will suffer. See how here:

  • How to import MXF files to Final Cut Pro with smooth editing

Summary: Follow this tutorial to learn how to import and edit MXF files in Final Cut Pro by converting MTS to FCP native format.
If you have a Panasonic P2, Canon XF or Sony XDCAM series camcorder,
you may be familiar with Material eXchange Format (MXF). Though MXF is a
great video format to record high-definition videos, it is not easy to
use in that they are not natively supported by most NLE systems like
Final Cut Pro. In order to import MXF to FCP for editing, the easy workaround is to transcode MXF files to FCP compatible video formats.
Along with some help from a top MXF Converter, it can be done. To
help those who wanna edit MXF files in FCP without problems, here I
share with you a simple guide on how to convert MXF files to edit in
Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X.
First of all, downloading the App- Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac
Overall, the program is a professional yet easy-to-use MXF Converter
on Mac (Mavericks included) which can not only convert XF100, Canon
C300, XF105 and XF305, Panasonic P2 recorded MXF files, but also provide
simple video editing functions for you. The MXF to FCP Converter not
only can convert MXF to ProRes for FCP, but also can transcode MXF
videos for editing in Avid MC, Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, FCE, etc.
Just download it and follow the tutorial below to get the work done.
Transcoding (P2) MXF files to ProRes for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X
    1. Import MXF files to the converter
Launch the best MXF to FCP Converter, and then click the “add files” button to browse and import MXF videos from your camcorder or hard drive.
    2. Select FCP editable format
Click the Format bar, and move mouse cursor to choose “Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)” as output format.
    Tips:
    a. Settings- click to set video
    resolution(1920×1080/1440×1080/1280×720/720×480), bitrate (from 1Mbps to
    20Mbps), frame rate (24p/30p)
    b. Editor (next to “Add” icon)- click to set deinterlace, trim, crop, add effect, attach subtitles, etc
    3. Start transcoding MXF video to FCP
Click “Convert” button to start converting MXF files to Apple ProRes
MOV for FCP 6/7/X under Mac OS. Once the MXF to ProRes 422 conversion
is done, you can transfer MXF footage into Final Cut Pro (X) for editing
    smoothly on Mac with ease.

  • How to Import DVD content to FCP for editing

My clients always bring us DVDs (both PAL and NTSC formats) for us to insert certain segments into the FCP project.
    Questions:
    1. We can import the PAL VOB file into FCP PAL project, but the images seems to be broken up in thick horizontal lines. It seems to be related to the interlace but we cannot fix it in FCP, not matter using deinterlace, switch field, de-flicker.
    2. No audio can be import in this way.
We cannot digitally import those DVD files into FCP and we can only bring the DVD into FCP using component signals and analog audio through a DVD player.
Any suggestion on how to import the DVD digitally into FCP, both audio and video?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike
(rem: those DVDs are most created by other post facilities, they are not encrypted movie DVDs, so this problem is not related to encryption or region codes.)

Did you search the forum for DVD ripping? This is a very common problem and discussed all the time
You have to rip the DVDs to a format that FCP understands like, for instance, DV video
You can use software like DVxDVD a decent commercial product or MPEG Streamclip which is free but requires Apple MPEG Playback Component to make it work

  • How to import DVDs?

Is it possible to import DVDs into my Itunes? For example I have a DVD of Peter Pan (my DVD player is playing up) so I wanted to import that into Itunes so I can play it on my Apple TV.
Is this possibl? If so, how?
    thanks!

Commercial DVDs are encrypted. Breaking that encryption, a necessary first step in copying the DVD, is illegal in the U.S., therefore, the terms of use of these forums prohibit us from discussing software or methods. Sorry.

  • How to import DVD Studio Pro Menu into Motion?

I would like to change the colors of one of the templates in DVD Studio Pro. In particular the .psd menu file. Is there a way to import the .psd file into Motion and change the color. Or maybe there is an easier way of doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can. You can import a Motion project file directly into DVD Studio Pro, though when I tried it took a loooooong time (depends on the size and complexity of the project of course). Here's a tutorial on how to do that:
    http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-dvd-studio-pro-4-with-motion-53426/
OR... you can just export your Motion project and import it into DVD SP as a Quicktime file, and put that in the Menu section. Then you can add your buttons and so forth and proceed from there.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

  • How do I save a dvd (with video from a video camera) to edit with imovie?

A friend took videos of an event of mine with his video camera. He then put the clips on a dvd and gave it to me. It was recorded on with a Sony video camera and imported on to a pc with vega's then burned with DVD Complete. He was not sure what format he put it in but maybe something like video_TS.BUP. When I open it up from my desktop it has a audio TS and Video TS folder. When I try to open one of the video folders it goes to iphoto and says unrecognizable format. So does he need to save it to different format and what format would that be. I want to put those clips on my mac to edit to make a movie. I have the newest macbook with the newest imovie. Thanks for all your help!

DVDs are encoded into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD back to something else. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to your DVD to the Video_TS folder.
    6) Drag the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder and drop then into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like
9b) optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/From File and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • How to import dvd

I just made a dvd with my dvd recorder and would like to put it into iMovie for editing. How do I do this? When I go to File>Import and select the dvd drive, it filters the unusable files and leaves me with nothing. I can play it in DVD Player, just not import it to iMovie.

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * VisualHub (23.32$)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • How to import DVD-R movie into Keynote?

I just transferred a video (with audio) from a VHS tape to a DVD-R, using a stand-alone DVD Recorder. Now I need to import this into Keynote. I've tried opening/playing the DVD with iMovie iDVD, and Quicktime but they will not recognize it as a readable file. The only application that I have that even will play the disc is DVD Player.
Any suggestions how I can get this movie into my Keynote presentation will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

as log as there aren't copyright issues aren't a problem, something like Handbrake should work to convert the file to something keynote can read.

  • How to import a playlist made on iphone to itunes?

I made a music playlist on my iphone but now i want to copy it to itunes but i can't find how to do it =S

I was having the same problem and after some research online I found this and it worked:
    1. Plug your iPhone into iTunes.
    2. Right- or ctrl-click on the name of the iPhone playlist you want
    3. Select Export...
    4. Change the format to XML and save
    5. In iTunes go to the menu File>Library>Import Playlist...
    6. Find the playlist you'd just saved and... bingo.
If you've changed any of the info on any tracks in your library since creating that original playlist it may have difficulty finding a few of them. If so it will let you know, but you'll get everything else. Good luck!
    Hope it works with you.

    Hi,
Since MacBooks aren't builded with superdrive, I don't want to always carry an external driver with me..
I have imported all my CDs in iTunes and I would do the same with DVDs. Most of recent DVD doesn't have copy protection, so there should be a way to import just like CDs.
By chance, did you find a way to to it ??
