How to import from Aperture to iPhoto

Hello all,
Can anyone help me in moving my pictures out of Aperture 3 and into iPhoto? It was fairly simply to move them over into Aperture however I can't seem to work out how to do the reverse.
Also I currently have iPhoto '08 but will be shortly purchasing iPhoto '11 from the App Store. Till this happens I assume some photo's which were taken on my Canon 550d won't show up? And it will show a blank picture instead?

Can anyone help me in moving my pictures out of Aperture 3 and into iPhoto?
Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library. So,
1. Export all your Masters
2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.
I assume some photo's which were taken on my Canon 550d won't show up? And it will show a blank picture instead?
Why do you assume this?

I am about to buy PE10 but I have seen a lot of discussions on the web about problems saving from PE into iPhoto. Is it achievable and how? I will be using PE for more complicated manipulation involving layers.

Afraid not. You will need something to convert those comments into standard photo metadata like Exif or IPTC.

  • Import from Aperture Created Extra Collections (2 for 1)

I used the Aperture Import plugin to import my Library to start fresh with Lightroom 5. It created many extra "collections" that I now don't know what to do with. It would take me hours to change the hierarchy in Lightroom now that this has occured.
    Sample Aperture Hierarchy:
    PERSONAL FOLDER
         FAMILY FOLDER
              SISTER PROJECT - contains photos
              DAD PROJECT - contains photos
              MOM PROJECT - contains photos
How they transferred to Lightroom 5 Hierarchy using SISTER as example:
    PERSONAL COLLECTION SET
         FAMILY COLLECTION SET
              SISTER COLLECTION SET
SISTER COLLECTION (NAMED "PROJECT PHOTOS") - contains photos
Essentially, it duplicated efforts and created two (a collection set and a collection) for every one project in aperture. (see SISTER above)
It did this for hundreds of collection sets/projects! It seems in order to correct this I would have to go back and remove the last COLLECTION SET for every COLLECTION and Change it to a COLLECTION INSTEAD (renaming it from "PROJECT PHOTOS" to the COLLECTION NAME). I tried some of this but it didn't seem to want to let me move the COLLECTIONS named "Project Photos" into the COLLECTION SET?
    My questions are:
Is there a way to change or clean up my aperture library so it won't import this way? (Considering just deleting the Lightroom Catalog and starting from scratch with a new import). I have to have the sub categories for organization.
Is there an easy way to change a collection set to a collection and have all the pics show up there. I tried moving photos from the collection into collection sets and it would not let me.
Is there a way to choose/customize how it imports from Aperture and select whether things = collection sets or collections?
Should I use regular import instead? Will that work differently and if so what are the steps?
What is the correct hierarchy based on the Aperture example above as to how I should be organizing my photos?
Finally, In terms of my CATALOGUE; I am not thrilled that it brought everything in by day (3/13/2015, 3/12/2015) into my catalogue! Is there an option to tell it HOW to import? Say by month? Will I have to keep up this sequence every time I import now? (I plan to import/sync with SmugMug from now on: Iphone to SmugMug to Lightroom)
Thanks and any help is appreciated!

and obviously that's not possible directly from Aperture (why not?),
Obviously it is, consult your Aperture Manual. But here’s a hint: Start with File -> New -> Book...
    What do I do wrong?
You’re using the iPhoto command: Show Aperture Library, correct?
When you do this you’re accessing your Aperture Previews. IF you want to use better quality images either a: use better quality Previews in Aperture, or export the images from Aperture and import to iPhoto.

  • How can I import pictures from aperture into iPhoto

Since moving to mountain lion OSX, I can't find a way for importing pictures from aperture into iphoto. There used to ba a tab under archive in iPhoto where you could view the aperture library and select pictures to import them into iPhoto. This tab has diappeared. Could anyone tell me how it's done now?

I noticed indeed that you can change the library under "archive" in iPhoto but when I choose aperture library I can't find the same structure of albums as in aperture.
Sorry I don't understand this. What is "archive"?

I am new to Lightroom, trying the trial version now (previous Aperture user).  I'm on a new iMac.  How do I import photos from iPhoto to Lightroom for editing?
    Thanks.

Lightroom isn't designed to be a standalone editor.  Like iPhoto, it wants to manage all of its photos in a library (catalog).  To import your iPhoto photos into LR, see this article: Ready to move on from Aperture or iPhoto? | The Lightroom Queen.

  • How do I transfer photos from aperture and iPhoto to bridge?

How do I transfer photos from Aperture and iPhoto to Adobe Bridge.  I am using Photoshop CS6.  Many of my original photos were stored as raw files.

Here's how to access Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
and so that they may be viewed by choosing that folder in Bridge..
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop or view them in Bridge.
7  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.

  • How to export ranking and keywords from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
I like to edit RAWs in Aperture but still want to keep iPhoto for JPGs, sharing and slidshows... However, I cannot get the keywords and rankings from Aperture into iPhoto. The JPGs have other Metadata attached to them, but not the ones that matter the most here - ranking and keywords. Subtitles for example are also missing in the exported picture.
I tried various ways of exporting/importing the pictures (of course "including metadata"), but did not yet succeed. I did expect these two applications to get along more smoothly, however there must be a way to do this, right? Please let me know!

    Redgo,
I can't answer your specific question, but I too like to use iPhoto for slideshows.
I don't do this by sharing the libraries or having duplicate copies. In Aperture, I make an album with the pictures for my slideshow. Then in iPhoto, I grab that album from Aperture and make an iPhoto slideshow from that. It uses the previews, but medium-res previews are fine for a slideshow. It wouldn't be so good for printing (but I imagine you'd use Aperture to do that).
Just my 2 cents about an alternate workflow.

  • Loosing raw data size when moving album pictures from aperture to iphoto 08

I have all of my Raw files and pictures stored on Aperture using versions in album format. Would like to use iphoto 08 only for tranfering files to web gallery. Yet every time I try to move files (ie drag and drop) from my albums (my versions) the file size diminishes therefore defeating the purpose since i'd like to have high quality images on my web gallery so others can download. I've tried clicking preferences to "copy files" into iphoto08 as well as leaving it unchecked but still the image file size goes from 2mb to 330 kb. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? I guess I could export the raw files from the masters yet it seems this would be awkward when working with pictures from different sources. HELP ??

Actually this is an Aperture issue since this problem only occurs when I export and then import files from aperture into iphoto 08. When I import files off a disk or external compact flash disk directly into iphoto 08 and then upload to the web gallery they retain the same file size yet the files that were brought over from aperture somehow loose there size once they go to the gallery. Interstingly enough the file size of versions brought over from aperture appear to remain in tact in iphoto but drop off once on the web???? Does this have anything to do with Versions as reference files...but if so how does one retain the chaanges made in aperture to a master file and export it to iphoto 08 and then on to the web and still retain some semblance of file size??? Note I already did enable downloading prior to uploading to the gallery.. HELP!

  • MobileMe gallery switched syncing from Aperture to iPhoto

I had an album on Aperture that synced with MobileMe. Friends added photos via email and via web upload, and all was good. Until one day when the Aperture web album was gone. MobileMe album was still there, but it says (under Info) that it's syncing with iPhoto (which I haven't used in 4 years). So I load up iPhoto and, voila, it starts syncing.
How can I tell MobileMe to sync with original Aperture? This is a real pain.

  • Few questions related to moving from aperture to iphoto

i have decided that i want to move from aperture to iphoto,
    a. provided iphoto can meet some basic needs that i have in mind. assuming it can,
    b. the next question will be on how to make the move easiest and effective.
    why, you might ask:
aperture is great but is more difficult to edit in. further aperture does not have some fun and easy edits - apply styles for instance. not to mention faces and places (although one can expect these features to find their way in aperture over time).
anyhow i am realizing that if my photo software was as simple as iphoto, i would share more and enjoy more . therefore moving. but moving is tough - need to think through. help appreciated!
    Couple of questions:
    0. i have looked and looked. did not find any solution that is thorough. these two links are the most relevant. http://bit.ly/1WSexN (this one is more of a sync solution, i need to research if it accomplishes what i need done - which is to abandon Aperture. at some point be able to delete Aperture library and the photos that Aperture refers to because the set will quickly get outdated) and http://bit.ly/zc7mC (this one does not answer the questions i have below, although it does seem to suggest that one can do export of projects such that nested folders are created)
    1. i would like to move my projects (comprising of images in aperture) into folders on the hard disk, such that the IPTC tags are stored in the images on the HDD. I assume that masters will already have the tags and versions - no idea? anybody know about this. i will try test it too.
    2. i have rated images extensively in aperture. anybody know how to transfer those ratings to iphoto? one kludgy way i can think of is to save an IPTC tag for every rating level and that hopefully will get transferred over to iPhoto.
    3. importing folders into iPhoto - i am assuming that folders can be imported (by reference, without copying the image file into iphoto library) into iPhoto as events. how will i get the albums from aperture - not sure. kludgy way will be to enter album name as IPTC tag and then create smart albums. too kludgy and painfully slow in my opinion... anybody have ideas?
3.a. if i import nested folders of images into iPhoto, how would iPhoto treat that? again i can test, but if somebody knows, will not mind the commentary.
    4. simple question - when i edit tags in iphoto, does it edit IPTC tags or does it have non-IPTC tagging approach?
    5. simple question - when i make an edit in iphoto, where does it same the edited file? or is it a virtual version of the master image as in Aperture.
    and that is all

    0. What do you want to move? Use the Show Aperture Library in iPhoto will access your Aperture Previews not your actual files.
You need to export from Aperture to folders on the desktop and thereafter import to iPhoto. You need to decide if you want to export Originals - which means you'll have to start editing from scratch all over again - Versions, (which will be the edited photos, but you won't have your Originals) - or both. But if you import both to iPhoto you will have a large amount of duplication.
. i would like to move my projects (comprising of images in aperture) into folders on the hard disk, such that the IPTC tags are stored in the images on the HDD. I assume that masters will already have the tags and versions - no idea? anybody know about this. i will try test it too.
When you export from Aperture you will need to explicitly choose to write the tags to the output file. This is a setting in the Aperture export dialogue.
    3. importing folders into iPhoto - i am assuming that folders can be imported (by reference, without copying the image file into iphoto library)
I strongly urge you not to run iPhoto in Referenced Mode. IPhoto works best in the default mode. Should the path to the files change at any point in the future - especially if you move the files to a new disk - then you may find yourself resolving the location of each individual photo in your Library.
Is there a particular reason you want to run a Referenced Library?
how will i get the albums from aperture - not sure. kludgy way will be to enter album name as IPTC tag and then create smart albums. too kludgy and painfully slow in my opinion... anybody have ideas?
    That's the best way.
3.a. if i import nested folders of images into iPhoto, how would iPhoto treat that? again i can test, but if somebody knows, will not mind the commentary
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'. Now each folder will be created as an Event. There are no nested events.
If you don't uncheck the box, then each folder will be broken by date and time into Events.
    4. simple question - when i edit tags in iphoto, does it edit IPTC tags or does it have non-IPTC tagging approach?
IPhoto works exactly the same way as Aperture. It does not edit the tags on the pic, but stores them in the database. The tags are written to the IPTC on export.
    5. simple question - when i make an edit in iphoto, where does it same the edited file? or is it a virtual version of the master image as in Aperture
When you edit a pic with or via iPhoto it creates a new version of the photo. This is stored inside the Library package.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Package:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • Full photos from Aperture to iphoto

I'm new to aperture but I'm trying to import full quality photos from aprture to iphoto, however all I can manage to get in iphoto is thumbnails a few hundred kb worth...Does anyone know how to transfer full quality jpegs over after editing with aperture..ps I can't get raw files off my canon 450d either...
    cheers David

    Davo
The only way to get "full photos" from Aperture to iPhoto is to export them from Aperture ant then import them to iPhoto.
If you use the Media Browser in iPhoto (File -> Show Aperture Library) then you can drag Previews over. You can increase the quality if the pics available to iPhoto this way by increasing the quality of the Previews.

Short Slo Mo video imported to Aperture or iPhoto via cable (Air Drop not supported on my iMac): only the SloMo section imports. Not the rest. Any fixes?

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.
