How to import from Apples new Photos app
New Adobe user trying to import a 56,000 photo library from Photos - Apples iPhoto replacement. Organiser does not recognise the library when I try >Import >iPhoto etc. I'm concerned about losing all my metadata. Can anyone help at all?
Thanks so much.
If you turned off or uncheck iCloud Photo Library and My Photo Stream in the Photos app preference window, then the delete should not sync up to the cloud. Also, until you empty the 'Recently Deleted' container, the images are still on your Mac:
https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht3bfab2f96
Deleted photos and video aren’t immediately removed from your library; they’re placed in the Recently Deleted album, where they remain for the number of days shown, and then are deleted. You can recover the items before that period of time (see the next task). If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on, the photos may remain in iCloud up to 40 days and then are removed from all your devices that use iCloud Photo Library. If you’re not using iCloud Photo Library, your deleted photos are removed from your Mac only.

How do you edit photos with photoshop from the new Photos app? The edit in external editor menu item seems to be gone.
Tell Apple what additional features you want in Photos via both http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html since they don't have a feedback page for Photos as yet.

I've upgraded from iPhoto to Photos app on my MBP. All the pictures from my main mac got uploaded to the iCloud. I also upgraded to Photos on my older mac (it has limited HD space) and all the pictures started being downloaded to it. I went to preferences (on the older mac) and turned off the downloading, photo stream, etc. but the pictures are still there. I'm afraid to hit delete because I don't want them to magically disappear from my main mac.
All I want, is to remove them from my old mac to free up the space. If you turned off or uncheck iCloud Photo Library and My Photo Stream in the Photos app preference window, then the delete should not sync up to the cloud. How to batch change in new Photo app
I switched over to the new Photo app. I imported my photos from my iPhone, and then went to batch change the titles (which I use to search for specific pictures and places). I can't find an option anywhere to change anything more than one photo at a time! I uploaded over 200 pictures, I can't make modifications a photo at a time.
Someone help me please!I can't make modifications a photo at a time.
Someone help me please!
Batch change the titles in another app before you import the photos into Photos, for example in iPhoto.
Or use keywords instead of titles. You can select multiple photos and assign a keyword to all photos at the same time from the Keyword Manager. -
HT201313 Can you sync photos from the new Photos app to your iPhone?
With the new update and with apple moving away from iPhoto is it still possible to sync the photos from the Desktop Photos app to the iPhone like we used to be able to thru iPhoto? Right now it seems like I can only sync directly from folders on my computer.
Ah. Thanks for the help. Turns out I just had to restart iTunes for Photos to show up.

Photos replacing iPhoto - importing from the new Mac app
Hi All,
I just installed Elements 13 and opened for the first time. Couldn't import my library of photos as iPhoto was replaced by Photos (new app) in the latest OS update on my desktop.
I get a message 'iPhoto is empty'. All my photos are now in the new app library. Is there likely to be an update soon from Adobe or do I have no choice other than to manually and tediously export thousands of images and reimport them into Elements?
Cheers, SlinkHi all,
Thanks for the answers.
Thanks for the link Barbara B... looks like it's Apple doing their 'post Steve Jobs' thing again. Apple used to innovate to create 'great customer experiences'... now all they seem to do is have some idiots in the finance department decide what customer experience can make them the most money and tell me that's the experience I want to have. I used to enjoy new Apple devices, systems and apps because every one seemed to somehow make things easier or better... now I dread them because of the inevitably trouble-shooting and work-arounds I have to go through to prevent them making life harder.
As to the iPhoto question. I can still choose to open my photos in iPhoto if I want but when the app is opened a message pops up saying "all photos have been migrated..." but none of my new photos will appear, nor any edits I've made.
I've started playing with the Elements app and it seems really good. I love the guided edit mode. -
How do I insert a photo into Microsoft Word from the new Photos app?
I have Word for Mac 2011 on my Macbook Pro with Retina and am now unable to simply go in and insert a picture into ANY Microsoft program since the update from iPhoto to Photos. I'm an archaeology grad student in the middle of multiple term projects that require countless Figures, almost all of which come from pics I took in the field that are all in Photos. These projects have to be submitted electronically, thus I cannot simply copy and paste everything into Pages (my professors all use PCs). I've found that I can insert an image into Pages and then copy and paste it to Word, but the quality is severely diminished.
Is there some way to change the settings on the Photos app to allow for image insertion? Or do I need to go in and somehow manually copy and re-save every photo into a separate folder outside of the Photos app?Select a photo in Photos. Press COMMAND-C to copy. Go to your document location where you wish the pic to appear and press COMMAND-V.

How do I get the new Photos App to use my iPhoto library which is stored on an external drive?
2 years back assisted me in putting my HUGE iPhoto library on an external TB drive where I store all my pics and videos. They showed me how to point the iPhoto app to the iPhoto Library on my external, and it has worked flawless since. But now that I updated to the new release of Yosemite OS X, the Photos app failed to find it. And from what it looks like, it requires it to be stored locally on the iMac's drive... which I only have 500Gigs, and that was the whole reason for relocating the library...it's WAY bigger than 500Gigs. I would like to see if there is a way for the Photos app to find the iPhoto Library on my external, and update it so I can take full advantage of the new app and it's features.
Any help would be appreciated...!
Niles SoCalHey spdnbusa09,
If you hold down the Option key on your keyboard and launch Photos it should let navigate to and select you iPhoto Library on your external HD. -
I purchased an iPhone 3 and had taken some photos on it. I started having issues within 30 days and could replace it. So I created an iCloud account and saved those photos as a back up on iCloud. I did not restore my new phone from back up because I did not realize I needed to restore and not just activitate it. How can I save the new photos, apps, and other stuff but retrieve the old photos?
If all you want is your old photos, you could backup your new phone using iTunes, then restore it from your iCloud backup, import the old photos to your computer, then restore it from the backup your made in iTunes returning your newer data to your phone. If you want your old photos on your phone, sync them there from your computer using iTunes. The process would look like this:
Connect your phone to your computer, when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on it and select Transfer Purchases; right-click again and select Backup.
Disconnect from your computer and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings to return it to new
Go through the activation setup, choosing to Restore from iCloud backup. Make sure your phone is plugged into a charger and has access to wi-fi as this can take hours to complete.
When complete, without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences. On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically"
Now import the old photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
When done, open iTunes, right-click on the name of your phone on the left sidebar and select Restore from Backup, choose the backup you made in step 1.
Go to the Photos tab and select the photos you want to sync to your phone and sync. -
How to add missing Geotags in the new Photos App?
I have explored the new Photos App extensively but have thus far been unable to find any way to edit/replace/add/remove Geotags to photos that are missing them. With iPhoto, it was very easy to copy a Geotag from an iPhone-Shot photo to a photo taken with my Canon DSLR. In fact, I got into the habit of always snapping at least 1 picture with my iPhone to save the location whenever i'd go out shooting with my DSLR so I could later apply the Geotag to the rest of the photos when I got home. Did Apple remove this critical feature from the new Photos App?

After I downloaded the new update the new photo app will not appear in my photo browser list when I try to insert a picture in my excel document. How can I add the new photo app to my browser list?

After the latest update to IPhoto 9.12 my pictures folder has changed to a package... How can I change Pictures back to a folder instead of a package?
If Preview and Mail’s media browser don’t work, Gary, can you export all the pictures from the new iPhoto package back to folders and use an earlier copy of iPhoto such as 8.1.2?
I have both versions on my system so it may be the Mail and Preview media browsers are not accessing the new iPhoto package. I thought they were the new version but maybe not; I see a single iPhoto Library icon and when I control-click on it it offers to show the package contents... -
How to import iPhoto Library into the new Photo app
Hello so, my Mac just updated to the new Photo app. but how to I get my iPhoto Library over? I didn't get the option to import my iphoto library over there. it is really annoying me, since I dont want to use the new app before I know to import over.
You don't import, you just open the library with the new app.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' -
When I switched over to the new Photos app in Yosemite v10.10.3 and imported my iPhoto library to it, random photos in my library had their orientation changed. Some are upside down and some are turned on their side. I have a huge photo library, so this is frustrating. Hoping I don't have to go in and fix each one. I tried rebuilding my library by lauching Photo holding down option+command, but that didn't fix anything. Please help! Mahalo!
You do not have duplicate albums or photos.
Photo Stream
http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/photo-stream.html
The Camera Roll is for photos/videos that were captured by your iPhone, and for a photo saved from a received email, MMS, or from a website. These photos are also placed in the Photo Stream to be synced with your computer and/or with another iOS 5 device. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
All photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process are stored in the iPhone's Photo Library. The photos in the folders or albums below include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos are not duplicated taking up double the storage space. This way you can view the photos in a particular folder or album below only by selecting the folder or album, or you can view all photos in all folders or albums be selecting Photo Library.
This cannot be changed.
Removing photos or folders/albums of photos from your iPhone that were transferred from your computer via the Tunes process is done in the same way - via the iTunes sync process. -
New photo app does not import all of my photos from iphoto library
I have just installed 10.10.3 on my Macbook and the new photo app does not import all of my photos from iphoto library. I have about 3200 photos in the library and only 2300 are presented for import. I only have 1 library so I didn't choose the wrong one. Any suggestions?
Upon closer inspection it appears that the missing photos are in a folder called IPhoto Library. This folder is greyed out when I choose the import folder.
When I use 'show package contents' it reveals the missing photos (below). Why is my iphoto library so scrambled! Thanks for any insight. -
New Photos App - Can't Import Video from Digital Camera
Hi, everyone. I just "upgraded" to the new Photos app, but I'm finding that I can no longer import video from my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. With iPhoto, this was never a problem. All of the old videos I imported from this camera are there after migration, and are playable within the program. Photos import just fine. However, I get an error message for the videos (below). I don't understand why I'm not able to import anything new from that device.
I opened iPhoto to attempt an import and it worked just fine. Any help is appreciated. I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3 on an iMac 2010. Thanks.Hi there Jermaster
iMovie 3 does not support the camera you have. iM is a Digital Video (DV) editor. Cameras that record to mini DV tape is what is required. IM 3 does not support USB either. You need Firewire. The camera you have is a flash based Hard Drive camera. To get the video off this camera you'll need iM08 or 09.
But it doesn't appear that the computer you have will support either of these versions.
See below ...
