How to import from dvd to imovie

Is it possible to import scenes from a dvd movie (personal no copyright infrigement) into imovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Import from DVD to imovie

Hello, I have a DVD of me that I need to import into imovie so I can put it on my wordpress blog. I tried using handbrake and mack the ripper, and was unable to import into imovie. I also have flash video links from another website. Can someone tell me how to transfer my video from my DVD to imovie and how to get this onto my wordpress blog? Does it need to be in quicktime or mpeg 4? I tried using those other services and it did not work.
    Thank you very much.

I have a DVD of me that I need to import into imovie so I can put it on my wordpress blog. I tried using handbrake and mack the ripper, and was unable to import into imovie.
Personal DVDs are rarely encrypted except even when produced professionally so neither HandBrake or MTR are required except as a convenience. The iPod and TV presets will produce an iMovie '08/'09 compatible file if you remember to turn off all extraneous tracks -- chapters, soft subtitles, and/or AC3 audio "pass through." My preference would be MPEG Streamclip (free) together with the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20) since it allows the user to select any of the iMovie '08/'09 edit compatible compression formats -- DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, and/or supported profiles of MPeG-4 or H.264 along with their common audio compression formats.
A secondary approach is to image your file in such a manner that iMovie '08 thinks the content is on a camcorder and will convert the content automatically as part of the import. Unfortunately, this work flow may or may not work for any given user. In my case, it does not work using an DMG image but works fine using an ISO image.
Can someone tell me how to transfer my video from my DVD to imovie and how to get this onto my wordpress blog?
I have no idea what a "wordpress" blog is, so no help here.
Does it need to be in quicktime or mpeg 4?
If you are still asking about getting files in to iMovie '08 here, then be advised that generally speaking any content in an MOV file container may be referred to as a "quicktime" file. iMovie looks at the compression format in file container and not the extension of the file when deciding whether or not the file is edit compatible. The compression formats listed above would be the most common ones you could use unless you also have FCP installed on your system.

  • How do import from DVD?

I've got a band performance on DVD that I want to import and add a reworked soundtrack to (that I've done in GB).
I've loaded the DVD and it plays the DVD but I can't work out how to import what I'm seeing on the DVD into iMovie. I try to import but can't find the DVD "file".
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Dick

This isn't the best forum for your question Zoomman.
But if the DVD is protected, you might need something like Mac the Ripper and Hand brake (MtR to extract, HB to convert to QT files) to get the video you want off of the DVD.

  • IMovies Changing Order after importing from DVD to iMovie

I take a burned DVD from our camera and then import it to iMovie. When I do this, after I get through importing it into iMovie, it changes the order of the film. Why is it doing this and is there a way to keep the order in place??

I'm not familiar with those 'DVDcorders', but what I've read here so far, the problem is: iM isn't able to read out the meta-data on some of those disks which create the time-stamp. instead, it catalogs by date-of-import
    two things .. :
    • check, time/date is set in your recording-device ..
    • iM09 has a feature, to set the recording date (and time) of a clip manually after import; read iM's Help how to accomplish that ..

I need to import about 90 pics to imovie from iphoto. My imovie is 10.0.2

You can do this from within iMovie.  In the content library at bottom left of the iMovie window there should be an iPhoto icon.  if you click on it you can select the pics you want.

  • Problem: Importing from DVD to imovie. The DVD mpeg 4 file will not import

I recently purchased ImTOO DVD Ripper Ultimate. I've successfully managed to rip some files to my desktop. But I'm now having an issue importing 1 particular mpeg 4 file to imovie for editing. I open imovie and locate the mpeg 4 file. Imovie window pops up: Optimizing Video - Processing Event. Nothing happens. Any advice?

First advice: let it run. it may take a while.
Second advice: Check for extra tracks like tween tracks, closed captioning tracks, chapter tracks. iMovie will not import files that have these. It is best to remove these using QuickTime Pro before editing.

  • How to import from DVD (VOB files)

I have PP CS4 version 4.2.1 and am using it on a Windows 7 - 64 bit machine.  I have tried several different ways to import the VOB files in order to edit.  I am able to view each of the VOB files in the Source Monitor, but I can't seem to put them together.  That is, the video I want to edit is found on four of the VOB files.
I have also used AVS Video Converter 6 to rip the VOB files into one AVI file, but when I import the AVI file the video plays at what looks like about double speed and gets way out of sync with the audio.
I am a Premiere Pro newbie, but have lots of experience with Dreamweaver and creating websites.  In fact, the final product will be a Flash video.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Importing from DVD CAM

Hi, I just installed Adobe Premiere Pro but I don't know how to import my videos from my DVD CAM. Could anyone tell me how to import from DVD CAM?
    Thank you

Was just given 2 DVD cam discs containing footage that was shot at a concert I am editing. On reviewing the discs, I noticed that each song is assigned to a separate chapter on the DVD.   I'd really like to use this footage as it provides additional camera angles I didn't cover.  I am going to use my old Ulead Video Studio 8 program to convert the DVD files to mpg's for editing in Pr. (I will also check out the software Jeff mentioned).  I'm trying to convert each chapter on the DVD to an mpeg2 file so the files size is manageable.
The footage I shot is mini DV, and I plan on mixing the two sources.    What do I need to look out for as far as the "conversions/extra steps" you mentioned?
    Thanks.

I am unable to import recording from DVD to iMovie so that I can edit it. Any suggestions?

The files on the DVD are MPEG 2 files and need to be converted in order to be usable in iMovie. Streamclip from Squared5 is one option although others are available. Wondershare is one as well. Just Google for mp2 converters and you'll find many.

  • Importing home DVD to IMovie.....having trouble!

I looked up how to do this and downloaded MacRipper & Handbrake and followed the directions...2 of the 6 'chapters' imported to IMovie just perfectly....but the others kept encoding (if that is the right term) into data files.....I could open them using quicktime, but IMovie would not deal with them.
I did all of the chapters of the file exactly the same...
    any suggestions?
ps know that I am not overly computer literate, so any advise needs to be simple steps....
    thanks!

    Hi
    I have two favourit methods
    • DVD-player to miniDV tape Camera to Mac - or -
    • Roxio Toast™ - that also can back engineare to streamingDV for futher editing
Still there will allway be a quality loss - due to double encoding/de-encoding - DVD
is a distribution format so lot's is lost here, not a 100% storage format.
    *DVD back for futhur editing*
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a trayloaded DVD burner/reader
    B. iMovie’08 prob. 09 can import from DVD (homemade without copyprotection)
    C. I prefere one of these two ways
    • Copy to miniDV tape from set-top DVD-player --> Camera -or-
    • Roxio Toast™ - Can back convert to streamingDV for iMovie or FinalCut
    D. Read what Karsten collected.
