How to import iphoto library from macbook air to imac

Hi
I have been searching the support section but have not had any luck finding an answer to this. If someone can point me in the right direction to a link for directions that would be great.
I have just returned from a holiday and have been uploading all my photos to a macbook air iphoto library.
Now that I am home I want to import that library into my existing library on my imac.
Is this possible ? and how exactly (in no techno speak please - I am still quite new to Apple).
Thanks in advance.

Do you want to replace the iPhoto Library on the iMac with the iPhoto library on the MBA?  then simply Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
But if you want to move selected (the new) photos from the MBA to the iMac then you need iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  it is the only way to move photos between libraries without losing information
If you want the photos only without history then you can export from the MBA (see the user tip on exporting for details on the options) and then import the photos to the iMac

I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

  • Transferring iPhoto Library from MacBook Pro to iMac

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac. My software is up to date on both computers. I put my MacBook Pro into firewire mode and tranferred over the iPhoto Library package file. I put it directly into my iPhoto library folder. I double clicked on the file and iPhoto opened, but it said that the file can not be read. Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6? I have also migrated from the iMac to the MacBook Pro a few years ago, could that be causing a problem? I called Apple about it and they said there is no reason this should not be working.

Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6?
This is exactly why. iPhoto 6 cannot read the iPhoto 7 Library. No version of iPhoto can read a later version's Library. The app is backward compatible, not forward compatible.

  • Migration troubles for iPhoto Library from MacBook Air to new iMac

I am having difficulties with migration of my iPhoto Library via the TimeMachine BackUp of my MacBook Air  to my new iMac (Lion).
Since the MBA has no firewire port, the only way to migrate content is by way of a back-up hard drive (using WiFi for 245 GB would take days).
I used TimeMachine BackUp  with USB port & that took about 2 hours, as expected. iTunes came through without any trouble, but the iPhoto app  on my iMac remains new & empty. However, from checking "about this Mac" in my iMac, I know that the pictures are IN my iMac SOMEWHERE: the # of GB's of pictures (138 GB) apparently transferred, matches the size my iPhoto Library on my MBA. But where are they & how can I put them in the iPhoto Library?
Somehow I ended up with 2 users, but I can't find the Library in either one's applications.

With newer Macs you won't need a crossover ethernet cable as the Macs can detect the situation and adjust to it.
Apple products that require an Ethernet crossover cable. This will tell you if you'll need a crossover cable or not.

how do i download movie from macbook air directly to icloud?

You want to download (I assume you meant upload) it to iCloud?  If that's what you mean, you can't.  iCloud will already have movies purchased from the iTunes store, which can be redownloaded (depending on your location) from your purchased list.  Movies from other sources cannot be stored in iCloud, except digital copies or purchased DVDs that are compatible with iTunes.

    Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:

  • How to import iphoto events from remote library into local library

I know how to access my MBA's iphoto library from my imac, however I don't know how to import any event/photo into my local imac's library. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Once that opens by default with iphoto, then... went to Finder again, Pictures, right click on iphoto library (local Imac library) and select "open with" = Aperture.
There I had my MBA's library opened on iphoto and my local Imac library opened on Aperture. I simply dragged the events from iphoto to Aperture. Worked like a charm..
PS: It is obvious to say that for this to work, both Imac and MBA have to be Shared in the same network
That works, but there is a better way with Aperture. The problem.  If you drag the photos from Aperture to iPhoto, you only transfer the previews and you lose quality, because you do not transfer the high quality originals.
Aperture can do more for you:
Select the event   (in Aperture "Projects") you want to transfer in the library Inspector and then use "File > Export > Project as new Library".  This will create a new photo library with only the elected items.
Then open your destination iPhoto library in Aperture and select the command "File > Import > Library" and select the partial library with your events. Aperture will now merge this library into your iPhoto library.
This way, you will transfer the originals and all editing, keywords, etc, and effectively merge your iPhoto libraries preserving all your work.

  • Transfer iphoto library from MacBook to iMac

I need to know the best way to move my iphoto library from my MacBook to my iMac. I have over 4000 pictures on my MacBook, and I tried to upload them to MobileMe but it takes forever the way I am doing it. (I am probably not doing it correctly, I have to click on and select each jpeg file to upload it.) I am getting very frustrated! I am sure there is an easier way to do it, I just don't know how. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How to move iPhoto Library from  MacBookPro (Leopard) to new iMac (Mavericks)

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new iMac and want to move my iPhoto Library from my older (2008) MacbookPro. Have looked it up and tried to do so, by copying the iPhotoLibrary file from the old machine to the new, and starting iPhoto with option key down & pointing to the new library. When that didnt work, I tried booting with the option & command down, and attempted to Repair, and then to Rebuild the Library.
In all cases, iPhoto opens, but doesnt see any photos in the iPhoto Library. The iPhoto Library works fine on the old macbook pro.
    What shall I do?
    Thanks
    Tom

Ok I know it's been awhile but I finally was able to try your suggestion.
I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager on my macbook pro, connected my macbook pro to my new iMac and did a Rebuild Library from the existing library on the macbook pro, setting it up to save to my new iMac.
It began to do the rebuild (though there were many "unreadable files") and went through the operation, which looked like it was going to take several hours to complete.
But at a certain point (after an hour or so), the macbook pro complained that I dont have enough space on my startup disk!!
So I can only guess that the rebuild must have done something to the original iPhoto Library after all (even though the settings on my iPhoto are to NOT  copy files to Library on import if that matters...). The Library is 32 Gb though I dont remember what it's size was before...
Sure enough, my starup Macintosh HD now has only 1GB space on it. Yikes!
    I stopped the rebuild process.
Not sure if I need to now just trash the original library to make space on my HD (of course I can save it elsewhere in case its useful), but since the rebuild didnt even get halfway through its process, the rebult library on the new iMac isnt going to do me any good. Maybe I've just lost all the years of work I've done organizing my library. Maybe I just need to start over with new kind of software (or using iPhoto start again from scratch on the new iMac).
What do you think happened? I thought the rebuild wouldnt affect the original library.

  • How to move iPhoto Library from external drive to new mac?

I have exported a copy of my iPhoto Library from my old mac to an external hard drive. How can I import entire library into iPhoto of new mac? When I click Import to Library, I'm unable to highlight iPhoto Library file listed on my external hard drive in Finder. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is the iPhoto library on the new computer empty? If it is, quit iPhoto and just drag the iPhoto library on the New Computer to the trash and drag the iPhoto library from the EHD to the pictures folder on the new computer - there is no importing involved - you NEVER want to import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto Library
If you want to run the new computer with the iPhoto library on the external drive simply launch i{Photo while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library to point to the EHD

Use the Migration Assistant, either on its own or while setting up the new computer, or move it through an external drive with a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, or over a network, or use Target Disk mode.

  • How to copy iPhoto Events from MacBook to iMac

I have a problem. I own a MacBook and I have iPhoto'08 on it. I also own an iMac and I have iPhoto'09 on it. I use my iMac for ALMOST all my pictures, down loading them from my camera SD card directly into iPhoto'09. The exception to the rule is when I go on holiday and then I use my Macbook. Well I recently returned from a 3 week vacation in Africa with over 2100 new photos contained in 28 new events. I want to copy them into iPhoto'09 on my iMac. I would think this would be an easy "Apple to Apple" thing to do, but after researching it, I am now more confused than ever. Can anyone help me to accomplish this task without loosing metadata, corrupting my files, or re-importing all the pictures one by one?

Thanks Larry, I will try the IPLM if all else fails. Is it a "plugin" type program or is it stand alone software?
It is a stand alone program - iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
What I did do in the mean time was to copy the iPhoto library from the MacBook to my iMac, in a different folder. This is a temporary step, as I want to be able to have access to all my photos for searches at the same time. Do you know if the library name can be changed to something more descriptive or must it be called iPhoto Library for it to work?
The iPhoto library can have any name - switch between them by depressing the option key and launching iPhoto and using the select library option - or using IPLM which can switch libraries on the fly

  • Trying to transfer iPhoto library from MacBook to iMac.

I am trying to transfer one iPhoto library from my MacBook to desktop iMac to create more harddrive space on laptop.   I successfully transferred photos to external harddrive.  When I plug harddrive in to iMac, the iPhoto icon appears and the pictures are there, but I am not able to select it in order to import the library.  I was able to drag the icon to the desktop and the pictures are there - but when I try to dump in to iPhoto - it only gives me the option to launch and replace a new library.  I am seeking to combine the two libraries.  I would be so grateful for any guidance this community has!  Many thanks in advance!
