How to import just a folder?

When I try to import photos from a folder of my drive d:\, I have the "Navigator" on top, then "Folders". When I click on "Folders", I get a list of "Devices", then of "Files" as they are called, but in fact it's a list of drives, among them d:\.
Now I try in vain to get to the folders on d:\.
In fact, the program immediately starts to import files from another drive, since that's the one that's put above, on top, in that part "From x Copy to y", so this automatic importing creates chaos in the target (all the thumbs have that "ok" sign in the upper left, and I see the list building up in "My Own Files" (Destination pane).
All this when I really want to import photos from a folder ( ! ) of d:\.
Now when I click on the tab d:\, the program starts to import dozens of thousands of photos in d:\, which means I cannot just "open" d:\ and then select a folder in it, but my click on the d:\ tab starts the importing all over from d:\, most of them unwanted.
Now there is also a little arrow, at the left side of these tabs, so I just click the little arrow, in order to just "open" d:\, to select the folder. No chance, I always start importing by this.
I tried with options, with right click, with menu entries, with help file, with internet (2 hours), but I don't find any solution to this.
Just once, and I don't remember how I got there, I succeeded to topen the folder list of d:\, but I was unable to scroll the list, and my photo folder was below the list, meaning I would have needed to scroll the list in order to get to that folder, so I tried anew, and now I never even get to the list, let alone that folder displayed / in fact hidden below that scroll end, without my being able to scroll.
As said, there is no help for this in the help file. This is so awful. Could anybody help me with these problems? Is is not possible to first select the source, THEN trigger the import? How to select a folder, since clicking on those tabs imports the whole drive? How is it possible to get to those folders "hidden behind" the drives' buttons? And when I succeed in opening this list, how to scroll there?

Thank you, Jim, and dj_page, for trying so hard to really help me, I appreciate a lot! The resolution of all these problems lies in the following, very simple fact:
LR3 (perhaps later versions make the difference, but can't be installed on my system, I had to return version 4...) does NOT make the difference between usb sticks and camera cards!!!
So when there is a usb stick with photos on it connected, it automatically shows those in the middle pane, even when those photos are 23,000 photos and completely block any normal function in LR!
I deconnected 2 of my 3 usb sticks, on the third one just being 1 photo, and this is automatically displayed, and "of course", LR now reacts as expected, i.e. a single click on any drive just displays the folders of that drive, and a single click on any folder displays its subfolders - so it's entirely that behavior I had expected, and you both are expecting.
Having connected a usb stick with 23,000 photos means, they are all automatically displayed, which means 23,000 thumbs are created, and so with a rather slow computer, it's no wonder that "nothing goes" anymore.
In fact, I have those 23,000 photos on drive i: which is a partition on my drive d:, AND on my stick p:, and when I deconnect stick p:, drive d: is available in perfect shape, without any filling-up of the middle pane.
So, with LR3, you cannot have connected your usb stick = your backup when you run LR3, since it will only grey your hair then.
So, problem solved, but I am really exhausted by this, and I caused you lots of efforts, too. I'm really very thankful to both of you!
Two little questions:
- Does LR5 now make the difference between camera cards, vs. hdd and usb sticks, or is it technically impossible to make this differenciation?
- The setting "include subfolders" is available, by rightclick (now!!!), for folders, but not for drives, so it should NOT also mean "include any folder and subfolder", for a drive, but only works for subfolders, of folders? I once saw the setting elsewhere, on the screen, as you say, but I never found it again, on screen, just in the right-click menus of folders. How come?
Btw, now that the usb stick doesn't make choke LR anymore (since deconnected), I not only get to folders by single clicks on drives, but also by clicking on the "FROM" button (upper left), and then by navigating in the classic Windows dialog that appears then. (All this was impossible with LR busy with creating 23,000 thumbs from the stick.)
It goes without saying that from the web and the help, it is "known" that LR creates thumbs, automatically, for connected camera cards - but I didn't find hints to this same behavior for usb sticks... thinking NOW about it, it occurs to me that I should have had this idea before, of course. Re-reading my post above, I also see that I spoke of "import from d:" (which in fact I was trying to do), but I did not mention that I had connected some usb sticks, too (which are always connected to my pc).
Perhaps one other remark:
In LR3 at least, the middle pane does not have a caption, so at no time, I knew from WHERE all those photos came, from stick P: (mentioned on top, "FROM"), from drive i: (HDD), from drive d: (alternatively selected in left pane!), or even from drive c: (which filled up in the right pane!).
So this non-correspondence between "the drive visually selected" (other grey color than the other drives there) in the left pane, and the drive displayed on top, left me wandering what LR was doing, in the middle pane, so a caption for the middle pane would have shown me from WHERE it was filling it up. All the more so since a right-click on the thumbs there does NOT give any path indication! So there in incoherence between "selection on top" and "selection left", and no way to see which selection overrides the other - of course, I'm speaking here of a system put to a crawl... ;-)

  • How to import pictures from folder to Bridge

My problem is that I don't know how to import photos from my external hard drive to Adobe Bridge. No problem importing from camera, but I cannot find a way to import from anywhere else. Does anyone know how?

All you need to do is open Bridge and then in the Folders Panel click on the external drive and drill down to the folder you want.
And if you want the files on your main drive just drag and drop the files from one disk to another and they will be copied to that new location. For other options you are used to have in Photodownloader:
Adobe has a free DNG converter for download and renaming and adding metadata template can be done also in Bridge with batch rename or select the files for same metadata together and fill in once.

  • How to import only RAW images from folder with RAW & JPEGs?

My system is set up that I have both RAW & JPEGs in the same folder since I shoot JPEG+RAW. How can I import just the raw images without also sucking in the jpegs? There is no way to distinguish the difference in the Import box and also no way to easily separate the the two in the Import box. I've tried using the List View and separting them by File Size, but Aperture has a stupid bug here and it tells me that the JPEG file sizes are in the teens (like 17-18 megs) and they are still hard to separate from the RAW which are about the same size.
Why can't Aperture do this basic thing?

I'm not doing anything. What I wrote in my workflow example above is exactly what I'm doing. I've been trying some experiments to see if it was "A Better Finder Rename" that is causing the issue. So far, no go. I have taken just a couple of JPGs only and pointed Aperture's Import to the folder that contains them. Aperture is reading that there are only 2 jpegs (which is what there is) and their file size is right on the mark.
Ok. I just narrowed it down to something. The flaw is showing up after the RAW files are converted to DNGs. The JPEGs do not show up in the Import box when there are camera raw files like NEFs or CR2s and the corresponding JPEGs. That is Aperture's normal behaviour. But, and this is a big BUT, when the raw files are converted to DNGs and they are in the same folder as the corresponding JPEGs, that's when Aperture pulls its shenanigans. It has something to do with the JPEGs and DNGs having the same name. Even though the files have different extensions, Aperture is doing something to the file size of the JPEGs that make them seem that they are much larger files than they actually are.
I figured it out like this:
I had 2 CR2 files and the corresponding JPEGs in a folder. Pointing Aperture's Import to that folder, Aperture did what it is supposed to do; it saw only 2 raw files (doesn't matter that the G9 CR2 files are not supported yet). So, I renamed all the files using A Better Finder Rename and Aperture still only saw 2 raw files.
    So far so good.
Then, I converted just the 2 CR2 files to DNG and kept them in the same folder. Aperture saw 2 DNGs and 2 CR2 files. No jpegs were seen. Business as usual. Then I removed the CR2s and renamed the jpegs so they had the same names as the DNGs (except for of course different extensions) and that's when Aperture saw the jpegs as separate files and saw them with bogus file sizes.
So I tested that by altering the jpeg names so that they were different from their corresponding DNGs and Aperture went back to seeing the jpegs with the correct file sizes.
Therefore, Aperture is having some difficulty with two separate files, one JPEG and the other DNG, when they both have the same name (different extensions, of course).
Try it if you have a moment. Take one raw file and convert it to DNG and place it in a folder with its corresponding jpeg. Rename both to the same name and different extensions (.dng + .jpg) and see what happens when you try to get Aperture to import. Chance are Aperture will show bogus file sizes for the jpeg.
Let me know if that's clear.

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe mode</u>:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
If it works in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

iTunes doesn't take any notice of your folder structure or provide any automatic way to use any information that might be coded in the path. Can you describe the current layout in a bit more detail and explain what you hope to achieve. It may be possible to use tools in other program's such as MediaMonkey or custom scripts to get the data from the file paths into something that iTunes can work with. The most important thing at this stage is not to import media to iTunes without first making sure under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy to iTunes Media folder when adding to library are turned off otherwise iTunes may destroy your existing structure.

  • How to export/import a single folder of bookmarks

I want to export and import a single folder; or more correctly, backup / copy-transfer; one single folder at a time - but regardless how I attempt to do so, ALL bookmarks are transferred and I then have to go through several hundred to elmininate the duplicates. Please advise if it is even possible to save/backup then restore a single folder at a time. Thank You.

You can copy and paste that folder or selected bookmark to the clipboard and paste them in a text file.
You can also use another profile with no bookmarks and copy an paste that folder to the other profile and export them from that profile.<br />
Both profiles need to be open at the same time by starting the second profile with the -no-remote switch because current Firefox versions clear the clipboard if you close Firefox.<br />
Copy and Paste selected bookmarks from one profile to the other profile in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

    Hi,
How do I import a complete folder using iBackupBot?
I have the folders Documents and Library of an app, from a backup I made using another solution. So I’d like to import to the app folder in iTunes backup, the whole content of these two folders. This way I'll be able to restore using iTunes.
The thing is, I can’t create any directories/subdirectories and can only import files. I’m using the latest version downloaded from the site: http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm

    Hi.
Trash the iPhoto Library folder that you created on your Mac, or rename it "iPhoto Library damaged" if you may need some of its contents. Copy the iPhoto Library folder from the backup into your Pictures folder. Hold down the Option key as you launch iPhoto and select "Choose Library" from the dialog. Navigate to the good iPhoto Library folder and open. iPhoto should launch and open your library in exactly the same condition it was in when the backup was made. If all goes well you don't have to import anything.
If the library is still missing items, you can try a database rebuild. Hold Command and Option while you launch, select the first 3 options in the dialog, and rebuild. This can fix a library with a slightly damaged database.
If the library still isn't working you may have to create a new library (Option-Launch, select "Create") and import your Originals folder from the backup library. This will give you the pictures back without creating duplicates, but your albums and other items will not be recovered.
    Regards.
