How to import mbox folders?

I need to import part of a backup taken from ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes into an IMAP account of Leopard server.
The folder I need to import, named "Archive", is full of subdirectories, like "2000", and mbox files like 2000.mbox. It was a local mailbox the client used to organize old messages in Mail.app
Unfortunately, the folder is about 12 GB. I tried importing it into Mail and moving the folders on the IMAP account but at some point Mail.app crashes (latest 10.5.1), it would take ages to do that this way...
Is there a way to import that folder directly into the server using a hard drive and still maintain the folder structure?
Thank you

This seems not easy... The "Archive" folder comes from Mail 2 so the mbox are not really mbox files but just folders that contain all the messages in emlx format.. I tried to use that but it won't accept the mail folder, just individual emlx files http://www.cosmicsoft.net/emlxconvert.html
Please help!

Yes there is. You can design a folder hierarchy and export into it. See page 490 and following in the Manual.

While in iTunes, go to File>Add to Library> then select the folder that contains the subfolders of files you want to add to your library.

I have 40 gb of music that i have transfered to my new macbook pro, They are in thousands of folders and praying that there is a way/ app to do this. Thanks

Don't move them then consolidate. That won't add them to iTunes.
    You can...
File > Add to library and select the top level folder with the music
Drag the top level folder to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes.
FYI: I keep a shortcut of the /Automatically add to iTunes/ folder on my desktop. Then just drop stuff onto the shortcut to add to iTunes.

You'll have to do that manually, i.e. export each album of photos to a folder with the same name located on your hard drive via  the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.

I understood how to import the music in the media library but i dont want to creat hundreds of playlists by hand.
    Maybe someone has a tip?
    Thank to all

iTunes doesn't take any notice of your folder structure or provide any automatic way to use any information that might be coded in the path. Can you describe the current layout in a bit more detail and explain what you hope to achieve. It may be possible to use tools in other program's such as MediaMonkey or custom scripts to get the data from the file paths into something that iTunes can work with. The most important thing at this stage is not to import media to iTunes without first making sure under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy to iTunes Media folder when adding to library are turned off otherwise iTunes may destroy your existing structure.

  • Imported MBOX renders empty folders

    Hello,
I'm running Mail 3.2 under Mac OS 10.5.2 and I have a problem importing 2 old mail boxes.
The first one was a mail account used with Mail under Panther and the second one was with Mail but with Tiger.
I followed the procedure to import the MBOX files (I tried both "Mail for Mac OS X" and "mbox files" methods) and it manages to import the folders and present them in Mail but all folders are empty. It is strange as, when I browse the folders using Finder, I can see the mail boxes contain folders named "CachedMessages" containing all my messages. Each message is there as a file which can even be opened with TextEdit, although in a very unconvenient way.
Any idea on why the messages do not appear in the imported Mail folders ?
    Thank you

    Ernie,
These were originally IMAPMBOX files from my DOTMAC account. I had to rename the file extension to MBOX in order to make them manageable by Mail's import tool.
I just made a mistake in my original post : it's not 2 accounts (one on Panther and one on Tiger), it's the same account on 2 different computers both running Panther. After some data loss and reinstallations, I had kept a backup of my mail folder on a CD. These are old messages but I'd like to recover them now.
For example, here is what is inside the "INBOX.mbox" folder, for example :
    - CachedData1
    - CachedMessages
    - content_index
    - Info.plist
The above-mentioned "CachedMessages" is a folder containing the following :
    - 235
    - 242
    - 243.1
    - 243.2
    - 243.partial
    - 245
    - 246
Each of the above files is a text file containing one message (or an attachment for a message). From opening each of these numbered files I can tell that all my messages are there. Unfortunately, they aren't imported in Mail.
    Thank you.

  • How do I import my folders of bookmarks created on a Dell laptop to an Apple iMac and clean up the mess I've created trying to create a new set of folders and bookmarks on the iMac?

I have been unable to find and import from the version of Firefox on my Dell laptop to an Apple iMac the folders containing bookmarked website addresses. In the process, I've created a mishmash of unwanted bookmarks. Please provide me a step by step process to import the folders to the version of Firefox on the iMac. The process to accomplish this seems very awkward and counter-intuitive. The same goes for creating new folders and bookmarking website addresses to those folders on the version of Firefox installed on the iMac.

    Chris,
Thanks for the tip about the Firefox Sync feature. A friend and I managed to use the Sync feature to "transfer" the folders of Bookmarked website addresses from the Dell to the iMac. We found that shutting off and rebooting the receiving iMac computer was necessary for all the folders to transfer over. Also, the entire process would have gone more smoothly had we had separate internet connections for the two computers, but we managed to shift our single internet connection between the computers as the Sync process progressed through its steps. Definitely a learning process.
    Thanks,
    Charlie

  • How to import or Open folders or files in imovie

Hi I used to be a Windows User , Now a Happy Mac User However I have all my Clips that I use to make movies In 1 Folder all are AVI files , Now I can work out how to Import 1 Clip but how can I import the Complete Folder , Eg, I make U.water Movies , I have a Folder marked Sharks with 10 different Shark Clips in , Another Marked Clown Fish with 20 clips in ,
I want to Import or Just Open to use the whole Folder with these Files In , If I have to do 1 at a Time it will take Forever as I have over 400 Clips of Various Marine Animals , and don't want to retype Name files etc again ..
So if anyone can help me to Open or Import these so I can use as Is that would be great ( most other programs I tried you can just open the Folder from the Source ??)
    Any Help would be Great
    Thanks
    Mark

I have all my Clips that I use to make movies In 1 Folder all are AVI files
The first step is to ensure your AVI file containers hold iMovie '08 "edit" compatible files. For instance, an AVI file with M-JPEG video and Unsigned Integer audio would be compatible but an AVI file with M-JPEG video and adaptive PCD (ADPCM) would not be compatible. Once you know all the files in a given folder are compatible (or have been converted to any of the iMovie '08 compatible compression formats), then you can proceed to their actual import.
I want to Import or Just Open to use the whole Folder with these Files In , If I have to do 1 at a Time it will take Forever as I have over 400 Clips of Various Marine Animals , and don't want to retype Name files etc again
To import the files simply select the "Import Movies..." File menu option. When the window opens, create a new Event using an appropriate name (e.g., "Sharks" or "Clown Fish"). Now navigate to and open the source folder containing the files you wish to import to the newly named Event. If you want to import all of the files, simply Click on the first file in the folder and then Shift-Click the last file in the folder to select the first, last, and all intervening files for copy. If you only wish to import select files from the folder for "batch" import, then Click the first file and use Command-Click for each additional file you wish to add to your import list. Remember that while copying large lists of files may not be a time consuming process, thumbnailing them can take a long time depending on the compression formats involved.

  • How to copy mailbox folders?

    Hello everybody,
I have a G4 desktop and a powerbook, on both of them I have email folders for my only account.
SInce I will have to move and to leave home my G4, I would like to move all the archived messages, with their folders, to my other computer.
Could anyone please help me, telling me how to proceed?
I do trust in your help....
    Thanks,
    Ciao,
    Manfredi

    Hi David,
thans for your suggestion, actually I did solve my problem
"manually" following Matt's suggestion, but, when/if I should have the same need again, I will try the method you wrote about that seems quicker!
    Thanks for your answer,
    Take care,
    Manfredi
    Hello Manfredi.
You can import those mailboxes as Matt suggested, but
there is no need to export them first. Mail stores
custom “On My Mac” mailboxes in
    ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. You can just do
File > Import Mailboxes on the
destination computer, choose Mail for Mac
OS X as the data format, and follow the
instructions to import the mailboxes located on the
    other computer.
Pay attention to the instructions that Mail displays
when choosing Mail for Mac OS X as the data
format. In the next step, Mail wants you to select
the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported
(i.e. the folder where the *.mbox folders to
be imported reside), not the *.mbox
    folders themselves.
    Note: For those not
familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers
to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library
is the Library folder within the user’s home folder,
    i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Import mail folders from Snow Leopard into Lion

    Hi,
I've just switched from my MacBook Pro (MAC OS X Snow Leopard) to a new iMac (MAC OS X Lion). On both machines, I've been using Apple Mail.
Now I want to import the Mail folders from the Mail in Snow Leopard to the Mail in Lion. When using FILE > IMPORT FOLDER nothing was imported: Both settings, importing from Apple Mail and importing ".mbox" files, did end in a message saying that the folders could not be imported.
So I figured out how to access the library folder in my user account on lion and pasted all the mailboxes from Snow Leopard to LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILBOXES. After that, I deleted the "envelope" files from LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILDATA. I started Mail and it created the envelope files from scratch. Now I can see the mail folders, but they are all empty! However, when I browse to the mailbox files in the Finder (LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILBOXES), I can see that each mailbox ".mbox" folder has an "Info.plist" and a folder "Messages". Those folders are not emtpy!
How can I get my Mail in Lion to properly display the messages in the folders?
Any comments are welcome! Thanks for your support!!
    Regards,
    Matthias

Could you please explain the whole process of exporting mail from Snow to Lion. I have been trying for weeks on two diffrent computers and I can not get it to work.
I have moved the library, not sure to delete the envelopes. How do you export the  mbox-files ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

  • How to import mailboxes from Time Machine to new Mac

I had Time Machine backing up our old G5. We got a Mac Pro back in November and I never was able to import the mail from the G5 to the Mac Pro so I left it alone and just kept using mail on the old G5. Well, the G5 took a dump last monday. I currently have the Time Machine backup for that computer connected to our Mac Pro (but not using it as backup yet). So, the mail from the G5 should be on the Time Machine backup right? If so, can I import it into Mail on the Mac Pro?
I also pulled one of the hard drives from the G5 and have it in the Mac Pro in the 2nd bay just to make sure that HD wasn't dead. It works fine and I tried importing the .mbox files from that drive but it appears that all the mail on that particular drive are from like 2006. So, again, I need to find out how to import mail from the Time Machine drive. Any thoughts?
    10.7.4
    Mail 5.2

Back up what data? Mail data? I don't have any yet. I haven't used Apple Mail on this Mac Pro yet.
Edit: Launching Mail and holding Option right afterwards does nothing. Holding down option and then launching Mail does nothing.
Oooooh.... launching time machine while holding down option......
Edit again.... I don't have a Time Machine menu because that disk is not currently set up as time machine for the Mac Pro yet. I don't want to use it as a backup for this computer yet. I just want to be able to pull some of the backed up contents from it until I'm set.

  • How to create nested folders (i.e. a folder within a folder)

I was reading the booklet which came with iWork 08 and noticed (in a screen dump showing how to import images from iPhoto to Pages) a 'twisty' against an iPhoto folder. This (to me) implied that I can have a folder within a folder. i.e. I could have a 'Holidays' folder, then within there one for 'South Africa trip' and another for 'France trip' etc...etc...
I went into iPhoto this morning, but can find no way of doing this. I tried dragging and dropping, but the folders are all at the same level - i.e. the top level.
The help system actually said I could do this - but not how to do it.
Can someone enlighten me please? I'm sure it's something simple!
    Thanks

    Alasdair
It certainly is possible to have nested folders and drag and drop is the way to do it.
IF D&D isn't working, try quit iPhoto and launch it again. Then try once more.
