How to import without firewire port on new MBs

Hi,
I have a Sony HD camcorder that can give video output via iLink (firewire) only. It has mini USB out, but it is for pictures only. I have the new MacBook that comes without firewire port. What are my options?
If this has been discussed eslewhere, please provide link.
Thanks,
Wobble5

If it is a MacBook Pro I am pretty sure it will have a FW800 port on the side.
It is a Square port on the side.
Go to the Apple Menu and select 'About This Mac' then click 'More Info' in the lefthand pane under 'Hardware' click on FireWire it will say 'FireWire Bus Maximum Speed 800 Mb/sec' if it is fitted or 'This computer does not have any Firewire ports' or similar if it does not have one.
But if you do have a MacBook Pro then I think they all come with FW800 ports. These will work with FW400 devices you just need an adapter something like this:

    It should be in Favorites.
If not, click on the desktop then go to Finder menu > Preferences > Sidebar and tick Music.
Your Music folder is in Macintosh HD > Users > Your username.

  • What camcorder/DV transfer without Firewire port?

    Afternoon all,
I bought my MacBook a couple of years ago.  I was specifically told that my Sony HandyCam was compatible, however, didn't realise that I could only transfer via iLink and of course, MacBook has no Firewire port.  iMovie doesn't recognise my HandyCam via USB at all.
    1.  Does anyone have any better ideas on how I can transfer DV to my MacBook?
    2.  I'm now looking to get a new camcorder.  Any suggestions on where I can start my research on camcorders that will be compatible with my MacBook?
    I'm grateful for any suggestions.
    Kind regards.

Have you tried to simply copy the video to your desktop with a USB cable? You could then import that file into iMovie. You may find some helpful information here:

  • Video in without firewire port?

I bought a 13" Aluminum MacBook recently. I didn't read the spec carefully. I discovered only after I have receive the shipment that this MacBook no longer have the firewire port. Without it, how can I connect my Camcorder via the DV port?

Thank you for your suggestions. I think I would keep the MacBook even though the loss of the firewire was really a step backward. It was my own fault to assume that the firewire port would carry forward from the white MacBook. This MacBook is not my only Macintosh. I also have a old G5 iMac that can handle my camcorder fine.

  • Connecting 1st Gen i-pod to comp without firewire port

Does anyone know any way to connect a first generation ipod to a windows computer without a firewire port? Because it is first generation the i-pod only has a firewire port on it and is not compatable with a dock connector. Is there any cable i can buy which will adapt a firewire port to a usb port?
    Thanks

No, if you want to use that iPod, get a Firewire card for your computer. I recommend the Adaptec Fireconnect 4300 for desktop PCs or the Adaptec Fireconnect 1430 for notebook PCs.

  • How to import the old project to new project in P6

Hi new guy here.Sorry if this thing have been posted before.I am kinda new here.
I just wonder if can I import an old project to new project in P6?
I have already finished with the project, but then as something happened I need to make it as a new project. So how can I used all the information I have on the old project to be transfer to the new one?
If can how?I need to change certain things like date, resource, etc.
    Thanks

    hello.
there are other more elaborate (and depending on size and scope of modifications, possibly useful) options including Methodology Management, but to keep it simple, try the following:
if you have an initial baseline of the existing project, restore it and go from there. let me know if you need help on that.
if not, copy-paste the existing project and manually adjust the newly created one. you can use "global changes" and/or "fill down" (see help and/or available related posts for this) to clear progress data such as actual resource/ expense units and costs, then activity start dates (in this order).
make sure you baseline your projects before you start imputting actual data.
    good luck.

  • Import without Firewire?

    Hi -
I've got an old JVC GR Mini DV camera without firewire. Are there any ways of getting video into iMovie v3 for editing? The camera only has the 3 plugs red/white/yellow which connect to a scart for tv connection
Would downloading to DVD and then importing from DVD work?
    Many thanks
    JC

    Hi Bengt,
in my innocence I had not considered that I would get a quality loss at each stage. I guess you are right about another camera, I do have a hankering after something nice. I am hoping that Sue and Lennart can get me pointed in the right direction with the one I have - to get my current problem solved then I can go shopping!
A camera with low light ability would be nice as the local riding stables sometimes asks me to hold a camera for them (so far its never been my own camera until Sat night when theirs broke and I used my old JVC - hence my current panic!) Also if i purchased something with a video in (this is what you mean by video through?) I guess I could then transfer all their Hi8 to MiniDV
Many thanks for all your help

  • COMPATIBLE CAMCORDER & EXTERNAL HARDRIVE FOR MacBook WITHOUT FIREWIRE PORT.

    Good Evening Ladies & Gentleman,
I have a MacBook(13" Aluminum 2008 version) that does NOT have a firewire port, just USB.
    - As far as CAMCORDERS go, What Model and Brand is best compatible with it?
    - Also, as far as EXTERNAL HARDRIVES goes, which ones will be most compatible with the MacBook 13" Aluminum version 2008?
    - SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MUCH, MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS.

    Hey,
As for camcorders - I don't really think that there is any limitation caused by your Macbook. Perhaps every single model by all the wide-known manufacturers as Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. has a USB port, so you don't have to worry about firewire.
As for external hard drives - You can find a huge number of external hard drives that are 100% compatible with all Macs for sure, on the Apple Online Store.

  • How to import iPhoto Library into the new Photo app

Hello so, my Mac just updated to the new Photo app. but how to I get my iPhoto Library over? I didn't get the option to import my iphoto library over there. it is really annoying me, since I dont want to use the new app before I know to import over.

You don't import, you just open the library with the new app.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • How to import the catalogue onto a new computer in Elements 9?

I have a new computer and was using ELements 9 on the old one.  I have downloaded the programme and aslo copied the catalogue over from the old computer.  How do i import the catalogue?  When I click on Import, it doesnt mention catalogue, only Frame for Video and Wia support.
    Margaret

Thank you very much.  The only problem with this is that there is no option to “restore catalogue” in the drop down File menu in my newly downloaded PSE 9.  There is no mention of the word “catalogue”.  There is an Import option but this is only for “Frame for Video” or “WIA Support”
    With best wishes

  • How to import Verizon Cloud contacts to new iPhone 6

My HTC DNA battery quit working and would no longer boot up. Luckily I had my contacts backed up to Verizon Cloud. I just purchased a new iPhone 6, however, my contacts will not import to the new IPhone 6. What am I doing wrong? It doesn't give me the option of "restoring" contacts, only restore media to the new phone.

wow thats a hard one. Not that many people have that phone. I would probably say go to store and let them try it on the machine. Since its such an old phone its going to be hard. If you synk with outlook tho I am sure you can do it.

  • Have saved Bookmarks from my desktop Win XP on a USB stick in a folder named "Bookmarks" How to "import" these Bookmarks in my new new notebook wih Win7 Home Premium with Firefox?

First of all thank you for solving my installation of Firefox on my new notebook. I have successfully installed Firefox on that new PC.
Now I have another problem. I have successfully copied my Book marks from my desktop onto a USB stick in a folder named "Bookmarks" I am trying to 'import" the same Book marks in my Firefox on my new notebook. I cannot. I have tried various ways via "organise bookmarks" or "import" but I do not seem to be able to do it. Any suggestions?

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
Did you save (export) the bookmarks to an HTML file or did you create a JSON backup?<br />
A JSON backup needs to be restored and will replace all currently present bookmarks.<br />
An HTML backup is imported and those bookmarks are merged with the existing bookmarks.

  • How to import from old address book?

Hi all, I've searched the net about my problem but with no result.
I have an old mac (a G3 iMac running 10.3.9) with a lot of contacts on its Address Book, and I do mean a lot. The computer is completely dead, but I have a copy of the contents of its internal hard disk on a new mac running Lion. My problem is importing the old contacts into the new Address Book. The file formats have changed and the old files can't be imported into the new application, they are not even recognized as addressbook files. Obviously I can't export from the old system since it's not running. The old AddressBook.data file is a terrible junk of names, addresses, telephone numbers and everything else organized in an incomprehensible way (I can't just manually copy the addresses from the file). Does anyone know how to import those contacts into the new format? Otherwise, I'll have to find somebody who owns an old system with an old Address Book application so that I can export the files from there. Thanks a lot

As it's been 3 months, you probably have resolved this by now, but I had a similar problem today and resolved it with help from a tech at the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store.
If you ever backed up your "Library" folder from your old Mac, it contains the "Application Support" folder which in turn contains the "Address Book" folder.
On your new iMac, running Lion:
    1)open Finder
    2)select "Go" on the menu
3)with the "Go" window open, press and hold down the "Option" key on your keybord. Doing this will expose the hidden "Library" folder.
    4) in the Library folder you will find "Application Support"
    5) in the "Application Support" folder, you will find the "Address Book" folder
    6) assuming you have the old "Address Book" folder from within the backed-up "Library Folder" from you old iMac, delete the "Address Book" folder on your new iMac and copy your old backed-up Address Book folder to the "Application Support" folder in its place.
    7) Open the Address Book application and you should see your contact records.
I just finished doing this and it worked for me.
    Cheers

  • How to transfer files from an iMac without upgraded Migration Assistant to a new iMac that doesn't have a firewire port?

    Hello.
I just purchased a new iMac. He's awesome. However, he didn't come with a Firewire port. (Bummer, because I have one from the last time (2007) I had to transfer stuff from my iBook...)
When I turned him on, he wanted to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from the older iMac; she doesn't have the most updated Migration Assistant, though. (She works just fine, but she only has Snow Leopard.)
Okay, so what I'm wondering is if I just have to use a huge external hardrive to move everything? If I do that, will my programs (Microsoft Office) move? I fear they won't move/transfer that way. Ugh.
    PLEASE HELP.
    Ideas? Advice?
    Thank you in advance!

Firewire 800 (what the new iMac has) is 9 pin. FireWire 400 is 6 pin (what your old iMac has).  Hopefully you didn't damage your new iMac by trying to insert a FW400 cable into its FW800 connector. The numbers are important in the case of the ports. They don't interchange!!! Get the proper cable or risk damaging your new iMac.
