How to improve ABAP logics

Hi
How to Improve ABAP logics(Programming) in all areas.
I need guidence from you all. How to start to improve them.
Regards,
Maruti

Hi,
Following are the performance standards need to be following in writing ABAP programs:
1.      Unused/Dead code
Avoid leaving unused code in the program. Either comment out or delete the unused situation. Use program --> check --> extended program to check for the variables, which are not used statically.
2.      Subroutine Usage
For good modularization, the decision of whether or not to execute a subroutine should be made before the subroutine is called. For example:
This is better:
IF f1 NE 0.
  PERFORM sub1.
ENDIF.
FORM sub1.
ENDFORM.
Than this:
PERFORM sub1.
FORM sub1.
  IF f1 NE 0.
  ENDIF.
ENDFORM.
3.      Usage of IF statements
When coding IF tests, nest the testing conditions so that the outer conditions are those which are most likely to fail. For logical expressions with AND , place the mostly likely false first and for the OR, place the mostly likely true first.
Example - nested IF's:
IF (least likely to be true).
IF (less likely to be true).
IF (most likely to be true).
     ENDIF.
    ENDIF.
   ENDIF.
Example - IF...ELSEIF...ENDIF :
IF (most likely to be true).
ELSEIF (less likely to be true).
ELSEIF (least likely to be true).
  ENDIF.
Example - AND:
IF (least likely to be true) AND
      (most likely to be true).
   ENDIF.
Example - OR:
IF (most likely to be true) OR
      (least likely to be true).
4.      CASE vs. nested Ifs
When testing fields "equal to" something, one can use either the nested IF or the CASE statement. The CASE is better for two reasons. It is easier to read and after about five nested IFs the performance of the CASE is more efficient.
5.      MOVE statements
When records a and b have the exact same structure, it is more efficient to MOVE a TO b than to  MOVE-CORRESPONDING a TO b.
MOVE BSEG TO *BSEG.
is better than
MOVE-CORRESPONDING BSEG TO *BSEG.
6.      SELECT and SELECT SINGLE
When using the SELECT statement, study the key and always provide as much of the left-most part of the key as possible. If the entire key can be qualified, code a SELECT SINGLE not just a SELECT.   If you are only interested in the first row or there is only one row to be returned, using SELECT SINGLE can increase performance by up to three times.
7.      Small internal tables vs. complete internal tables
In general it is better to minimize the number of fields declared in an internal table.  While it may be convenient to declare an internal table using the LIKE command, in most cases, programs will not use all fields in the SAP standard table.
For example:
Instead of this:
data:  t_mara like mara occurs 0 with header line.
Use this:
data: begin of t_mara occurs 0,
        matnr like mara-matnr,
        end of t_mara.
8.      Row-level processing and SELECT SINGLE
Similar to the processing of a SELECT-ENDSELECT loop, when calling multiple SELECT-SINGLE commands on a non-buffered table (check Data Dictionary -> Technical Info), you should do the following to improve performance:
o       Use the SELECT into <itab> to buffer the necessary rows in an internal table, then
o       sort the rows by the key fields, then
o       use a READ TABLE WITH KEY ... BINARY SEARCH in place of the SELECT SINGLE command. Note that this only make sense when the table you are buffering is not too large (this decision must be made on a case by case basis).
9.      READing single records of internal tables
When reading a single record in an internal table, the READ TABLE WITH KEY is not a direct READ.  This means that if the data is not sorted according to the key, the system must sequentially read the table.   Therefore, you should:
o       SORT the table
o       use READ TABLE WITH KEY BINARY SEARCH for better performance.
10.  SORTing internal tables
When SORTing internal tables, specify the fields to SORTed.
SORT ITAB BY FLD1 FLD2.
is more efficient than
SORT ITAB.
11.  Number of entries in an internal table
To find out how many entries are in an internal table use DESCRIBE.
DESCRIBE TABLE ITAB LINES CNTLNS.
is more efficient than
LOOP AT ITAB.
  CNTLNS = CNTLNS + 1.
ENDLOOP.
12.  Performance diagnosis
To diagnose performance problems, it is recommended to use the SAP transaction SE30, ABAP/4 Runtime Analysis. The utility allows statistical analysis of transactions and programs.
13.  Nested SELECTs versus table views
Since releASE 4.0, OPEN SQL allows both inner and outer table joins.  A nested SELECT loop may be used to accomplish the same concept.  However, the performance of nested SELECT loops is very poor in comparison to a join.  Hence, to improve performance by a factor of 25x and reduce network load, you should either create a view in the data dictionary then use this view to select data, or code the select using a join.
14.  If nested SELECTs must be used
As mentioned previously, performance can be dramatically improved by using views instead of nested SELECTs, however, if this is not possible, then the following example of using an internal table in a nested SELECT can also improve performance by a factor of 5x:
Use this:
form select_good.
data: t_vbak like vbak occurs 0 with header line.
data: t_vbap like vbap occurs 0 with header line.
select * from vbak into table t_vbak up to 200 rows.
  select * from vbap
          for all entries in t_vbak
          where vbeln = t_vbak-vbeln.
  endselect.
endform.
Instead of this:
form select_bad.
select * from vbak up to 200 rows.
select * from vbap where vbeln = vbak-vbeln.
  endselect.
endselect.
endform.
Although using "SELECT...FOR ALL ENTRIES IN..." is generally very fast, you should be aware of the three pitfalls of using it:
Firstly, SAP automatically removes any duplicates from the rest of the retrieved records.  Therefore, if you wish to ensure that no qualifying records are discarded, the field list of the inner SELECT must be designed to ensure the retrieved records will contain no duplicates (normally, this would mean including in the list of retrieved fields all of those fields that comprise that table's primary key).
Secondly,  if you were able to code "SELECT ... FROM <database table> FOR ALL ENTRIES IN TABLE <itab>" and the internal table <itab> is empty, then all rows from <database table> will be retrieved.
Thirdly, if the internal table supplying the selection criteria (i.e. internal table <itab> in the example "...FOR ALL ENTRIES IN TABLE <itab> ") contains a large number of entries, performance degradation may occur.
15.  SELECT * versus SELECTing individual fields
In general, use a SELECT statement specifying a list of fields instead of a SELECT * to reduce network traffic and improve performance.  For tables with only a few fields the improvements may be minor, but many SAP tables contain more than 50 fields when the program needs only a few.  In the latter case, the performace gains can be substantial.  For example:
Use:
select vbeln auart vbtyp from table vbak
  into (vbak-vbeln, vbak-auart, vbak-vbtyp)
  where ...
Instead of using:
select * from vbak where ...
16.  Avoid unnecessary statements
There are a few cases where one command is better than two.  For example:
Use:
append <tab_wa> to <tab>.
Instead of:
<tab> = <tab_wa>.
append <tab> (modify <tab>).
And also, use:
if not <tab>[] is initial.
Instead of:
describe table <tab> lines <line_counter>.
if <line_counter> > 0.
17.  Copying or appending internal tables
Use this:
<tab2>[] = <tab1>[].  (if <tab2> is empty)
Instead of this:
loop at <tab1>.
  append <tab1> to <tab2>.
endloop.
However, if <tab2> is not empty and should not be overwritten, then use:
append lines of <tab1> [from index1] [to index2] to <tab2>.

  • How to write ABAP Logic in SAP Query to fetch records from many Tables

    Hi Expert,
I have one requirement, want to display all BOM (Equipment BOM, Function Location BOM and Meterial BOM) from a particular plant.
    List of tables as below:
    EQST: Equipment to BOM Link
TPST: Link Between Functional Location and BOM
    MAST: Material to BOM Link
    STPO:BOM item
Requirement: When user enters Plant then SAP Query should execute and fetch all BOMs (as mentioned above) from STPO Table.
I have done so far is as follows:
I create User Group, Infoset and SAP Query.
While creating INFOSET, i used 4 tables (EQST,TPST,MAST & STPO) and link between then is as follows:
    STPO-STLNR ---> EQST-STLNR : Left Outer Join
    STPO-STLNR ---> TPST-STLNR : Left Outer Join
    STPO-STLNR ---> MAST-STLNR : Left Outer Join
Now its showing all BOM from all plants though I enter one Plant value.
Please advise me to write SAP Query and Logic to fetch all BOM from selected Plant Value.
    Thanks,
    Jay.

    Hi FCannavo,
    Thanks for your quick reply.
See, now I changed my Infoset design.
I added one Plant Table (T001W) and then
    T001W-WERKS--->EQST-WERKS
    T001W-WERKS--->MAST-WERKS
    T001W-WERKS--->TPST-WERKS
    and then
    EQST-STLNR--->STPO-STLNR
    MAST-STLNR--->STPO-STLNR
    TPST-STLNR--->STPO-STLNR
on selection screen, user will enter Plant Value.
Now its showing some records, but i dont think so i would be correct output or not, please guide me whether it is correct or not?
    Thanks,
    Jay.

  • How to improve the perforamnce

    Hi ,
How to improve the performance of the  report.
    Thanks and rgds,
    Roopa

    10. SORTing internal tables
When SORTing internal tables, specify the fields to SORTed.
    SORT ITAB BY FLD1 FLD2.
    is more efficient than
    SORT ITAB.

To find out how many entries are in an internal table use DESCRIBE.
    DESCRIBE TABLE ITAB LINES CNTLNS.
    is more efficient than
    LOOP AT ITAB.
    CNTLNS = CNTLNS + 1.

    Use this:
    form select_good.
data: t_vbak like vbak occurs 0 with header line.
data: t_vbap like vbap occurs 0 with header line.
select * from vbak into table t_vbak up to 200 rows.
    select * from vbap
    for all entries in t_vbak
    where vbeln = t_vbak-vbeln.
    endselect.
    endform.
    Instead of this:
    form select_bad.
select * from vbak up to 200 rows.
select * from vbap where vbeln = vbak-vbeln.
    endselect.

    16. Avoid unnecessary statements
There are a few cases where one command is better than two. For example:
    Use:
    append <tab_wa> to <tab>.
    Instead of:
    <tab> = <tab_wa>.
    append <tab> (modify <tab>).
    And also, use:
    if not <tab>[] is initial.
    Instead of:
    describe table <tab> lines <line_counter>.
    if <line_counter> > 0.
    17. Copying or appending internal tables
    Use this:
    <tab2>[] = <tab1>[]. (if <tab2> is empty)
    Instead of this:
    loop at <tab1>.
    append <tab1> to <tab2>.
    endloop.
However, if <tab2> is not empty and should not be overwritten, then use:
append lines of <tab1> [from index1] [to index2] to <tab2>.

  • How to improve the performance of adobe forms

    Hi,
Please give me some suggestions as to how to improve the performance of adobe form?
Right now when I' am doing user events it is working fine for first 6 or 7 user events. From the next
    one it is hanging.
I read about Wizard form design approach, how to use the same here.
    Thanks,
    Aravind

    Hi Otto,
The form is created using HCM forms and processes. I' am performing user events in the form.
User events will doa round trip, in which form data will be sent to backend SAP system. Processing will
happen on the ABAP side and result will appear on the form. First 6 or 7 user events works correctly,
the result is appearing on the form. Around 8 or 9th one, the wait symbol appears and the form is not
re-rendered. The form is of size 6 pages. The issue is not coming with form of size 1 page.
I was reading ways to improve performance during re-rendering given below.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/livecycle/articles/DynamicInteractiveFormPerformance.pdf
It talks about wizard form design approach. But in SFP transaction, I am not seeing any kind of wizard.
Let me know if you need further details.
    Thanks,
    Aravind

    Hi
You check in SM50 by executing the programing, You will come to know which select is taking more time and accordingly you modify that select.
You can do SQL trace and Run time analysis and analyse and see.
    check this and use
    1) Dont use nested select statements
    2) If possible use for all entries in addition
    3) In the where addition make sure you give all the primary key
    4) Use Index for the selection criteria.
    5) You can also use inner joins
    6) You can try to put the data from the first select statement into an Itab and then in order to select the data from the second table use for all entries in.
    7) Use the runtime analysis SE30 and SQL Trace (ST05) to identify the performance and also to identify where the load is heavy, so that you can change the code accordingly

  • How to write ABAP HR reports in ABAP web dynapro

    Hi All,
How  to write ABAP HR reports in ABAP web dynapro? We can add HR REPORT CATEGORY in ABAP HR using logical database like PNP.How to add HR REPORT CATEGORY in ABAP Webdynapro ?
    Thanks.

You can't use legacy concepts like logical databases directly in Web Dynpro ABAP.  Even if you could do so, you shouldn't.  Web Dynpro ABAP should always follow MVC - meaning that your business logic (the model) should be separated from WD as much as possible. This means calling function modules or class methods to consume the business logic and data.  So in general there should be no difference between building HR reports or any other type of report in WDA - since from the WDA side you are calling other objects to consume the data.
This probably does mean that you will need to create classes to expose the HR data that you want in your WDA.

  • ABAP LOGICAL ERRORS

    Expalin about ABAP Logical errors?

    Hi Vinay,
You can't delete the ABAP Runtime errors. But  you can catch the errors using catch exception Statement.
    For Example,
Class-based exceptions are handled in the following control structure:
    TRY.
...                       " TRY block (application coding)
    CATCH cx_... cx_... ...
...                     " CATCH block (exception handler)
    CATCH cx_... cx_... ...
...                     " CATCH block (exception handler)
      CLEANUP.
...                     " CLEANUP block (cleanup context)
    ENDTRY.
    Try This Sample Code,
    *--EXAMPLE FOR RUNTIME ERROR--
    *DATA : VALUE1 TYPE I.
    *VALUE1 = 1 / 0.        -
    >>>>>> IT MAKES RUN TIME ERROR.
    *WRITE : VALUE1.
*-EXAMPLE FOR HOW TO CATCH THE ARITHMETIC ERROR AT THE RUN TIME USING SUBRC----
    DATA : VALUE1 TYPE I.
    CATCH SYSTEM-EXCEPTIONS ARITHMETIC_ERRORS = 1.
    VALUE1 = 1 / 0.
    WRITE : VALUE1.
    ENDCATCH.
    IF SY-SUBRC = 1.
WRITE : ' IT MAKES ERROR'.
    ELSE.
    WRITE : VALUE1.
    ENDIF.
    Thanks,

  • Abap logic in Transformation End Routine not working correctly

    Hi,
I wrote a piece of code but during testing I found out that it doesn't meet my requirement.

I want to extract Standard_Cost for all sales items that meets the conditon. but at the moment only the first sales item in the DSO is showing.
I would like the following lines to display in the cube as well since the PLITEM is different.
    201021     PI31     REDBACK     999999A     78,850

    rp-S_STRDCOST
    WHERE SALESITEM = rp-S_ITEMID  AND CALWEEK =
    ld_calweek AND PLPLANT EQ rp-S_SOURCE.
    MODIFY RESULT_PACKAGE FROM rp.
    Clear rp.
    ENDLOOP.
    How do I resolve this
    thanks

    Hi Vaidya
Select single will always select the first entry from the source which matched your where condition.
therefore you are not getting all the required data.
    WHERE SALESITEM = rp-S_ITEMID AND CALWEEK =
    ld_calweek AND PLPLANT EQ rp-S_SOURCE.
    according to your logic
it will pick only one record e.g
    201021 PI31 REDBACK 999999A 78,850
    201021 PI31 FLXAAA 999999A 3154,000
    item id = 999999A
    plplant = PI31
in this case it will pick only the first record due to select single will fetch only one record (whichever it gets first and which meets your where condition)
You need to change your code logic and need to include more fileds which differentiates one record from another who have same valued as in your present where condition.
    Thanks
    Navneet

  • Need help in abap logic

I am facing problem in abap program.
    Requirement :
i want to print the data like this
delivery no-  item-  from batch-   to batch -   material shade-   no of cones-   netwt-   grosswt-   no of bags.
delivery no & item from lips-vbeln  lips-uecha field table.
against this i will be having no of batch in lips-charg field.
batches may be in order or may not be there.
Against this each batch i will get  shade, no of cones, netwt, grosswt, from batch classification.
    mch1,ausp   table.
on change of any of the above items or batch order i must print it with a new line.
    example.
say supose if delivery 100  item 10 contains ABC001 batch to ABC008  batch ,
    CDE 009 to CDE010, XYZ012, PQR013 batch.
this batch number contains characters and numeric.
i want to print like this
    delivery___item__frombatch__to batch____shade__noofcones__netwt___grosswt____no of bags
    100______10____ABC001____ABC008___black__40_________50 kg__50.4 kg_____8

    _______________PQR013____PQR013___black__40_________50 kg__50.4 kg_____1
can u any please help me how to build the logic.

    Hello Navin,
You've got to give control break points within the loop, to fix the problem.
    LOOP AT T_TABLE INTO FS_TABLE.
      AT NEW FIELDNAME1.
        WRITE:/ FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME1.
      ENDAT.                                   " AT NEW FIELDNAME1
    AT NEW FIELDNAME2.
       WRITE:/ FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME2.
    ENDAT.                                     " AT NEW FIELDNAME2
    * Fieldname3 will be printed below distinct Fieldname2. Fieldname3 is printed as bunch.
       WRITE:/ FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME3.
    ENDLOOP.                                " LOOP AT T_TABLE INTO FS_TABLE
    Note:
Try giving ON CHANGE OF T_TABLE-FIELDNAME.
This is an obsolete statement, but this really does well, in case of printing Currency or Date.
Usually, date and currency fields are printed
    Rs.****.**
    LOOP AT T_TABLE INTO FS_TABLE.
      ON CHANGE OF FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME1.
        WRITE:/ FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME1.
ENDON.                                   " ON CHANGE OF FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME1
    ON CHANGE OF FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME2.
       WRITE:/ FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME2.
ENDON.                                     " ON CHANGE OF FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME2
       WRITE:/ FS_TABLE-FIELDNAME3.
    ENDLOOP.                                " LOOP AT T_TABLE INTO FS_TABLE
Try with the concept above, hope you'll get the solution.
    Thankyou,
    Zahackson

  • How 2 Set the logic for report 2 run 1st of everymonth......

    Hi Experts,
i ve developd a HR-ABAP report in that Some part of code will Mon-Fri, Excluding Public holidays and sat & sundays...( i.e no public holidays and no sat & sundays)
and some part of should Run on 1st of everymonth.... but 2 parts of code should be in same report..
How can set the logic to run the report respective times....
    Thanks in Advance....
    sudeer.

you can code this but need some good expertise on fm's  , date handling techniques and subroutine call coding.
    1.
to make the code run only on 1st of every month
capture the rundate of ur prog .. take value of  sy-datum
    ex.. 01.xx.yyyy
or date std will be yyyymmdd so check for dd = 01 ..
so per logic first two chars show that its first of any month in any year ..
    if yes
execute the logic for the first of every month ..
    endif.
    2.
where the code needs to be run on mon-fri and not on public holidays / sun / sat ..
first fetch the day based on date .. like mon or tue or wed .. except sat and sun..
second check whether if m-t-w-th-fr if any of them is  a holiday or not
u need to check the date in the calender list like tholi thoc and .. to check whether that is a holiday or not ..
coming to sat and sundays .. u need to check the day for date using function modules and build the logic ...

This table data is generated by joining 10 other tables and some complicated logic, each table having million records
    period
    key_id1
    key_id10
    other_info1
    other_info20
    local_currency
    local_amount
    billing_currency
    billing_amount
The other info are based on the key_id, mostly description and/or related info. I need to find the sum of amount for fewer key_id.
      select period
             key_id1
             key_id8
             other_info1
             other_info16
             local_currency
             sum(local_amount)
             billing_currency
             sum(billing_amount)
        from table
    group by period
             key_id1
             key_id8
             other_info1
             other_info16
             local_currency
             billing_currency
Is there any other way to rewrite the SQL for faster execution
