How to Improve Ability to Watch Internet Video?

I have noticed what seems to be a decrease in the technical quality of many videos I try to watch on a variety of different internet sites--from Youtube to sports to news and current events. Quite a bit of the video is just so choppy (is this a slow frame rate?) that it just looks like a few still pictures sequenced one after the other. I've even experienced choppy or slurred audio accompanying some of the video (I would think that audio should not really be a problem on the internet these days).
I have a cable broadband connection, roughly 4.5 MB/sec down and 450 kB/sec up and speed checks always seem to be OK.
I have the most up to date version of Flash, Flip4Mac and even MS Silverlight (I believe only the first gen. works with PPC Macs).
One interesting observation I have made, is that my son's iPod touch (connected to our home Wi-Fi network) has great looking (compared to my iMac), smooth frame rate video on Youtube and on March Madness on Demand (back during the NCAA tournament). My iMac is hardwired into our wireless router, by the way.
Is the current coding, formatting, whatever, of internet video just leaving my PPC iMac in the dust or is there something anyone can suggest (I know, the first suggestion is probably to get a current Intel iMac!)? I mean, if the iPod touch can play such relatively high quality video, then it's not pure processor speed, afterall I do have a 1 GHz PPC in this iMac.
Watching all this internet video is not essential, but it has become such an integral part of the internet experience that I'd really like to do something to improve the quality of the experience.
Thanks,
Steve M.

"(I know, the first suggestion is probably to get a current Intel iMac!)?"
Not from me! Never a problem viewing +"internet videos."+ on my PPC. Also make sure you have the latest versions of QuickTime, VLC Media Player and Perian (AVI and FLV support).
Make sure you repair permissions & restart your computer. Most times, this clears up video issues. Last resort, running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.
Another thing to check is your browser(s) Preferences plug-in mappings. In FireFox, it's location under the Applications tab. I do not use Safari so have no idea where their file mappings are other than somewhere in Preferences.

  • Disable screensaver when watching internet video

I have hooked up my mac mini to my flat screen TV and I use it to watch internet video. What is the best way to ensure (besides manually switching it off) that the screen saver does not turn on when I am watching internet video?
I could not see any settings in Energy Saver nor in the Screensaver settings.

Might want to inquire the VNC software developer. It might be specific to the VNC in question, since different VNCs offer different levels of access to the environment.
It's not about the functionality of VNC. I just use VNC to log in to the mac mini, browse to hulu or abc.com or whatever and start the episode and make it full screen. After that I just disconnect from VNC, but the video is running on my TV just fine.
So while the video is running I have no control of the mac mini unless I log into VNC again and press alt/option or any key, which is cumbersome.
Since there is actually activity on the computer, the screensaver should not even start, so I am not sure where I need to change the setting.

  • Exsessive buffering when watching internet video?

I am a pc user switching to mac...
I want to watch videos over the web, but have found that difficult. The main problem is constant buffering. It will play 2 seconds of video and then buffer, making it unwatchable. This is both connect via Ethernet or wireless, using a high speed cable modem.
    1) Any ideas what to do?
    2) How does switching video cards affect this issue? I cannot see any difference in resolution between the two for videos, but I think I should.
    3) How can you tell if your internet connection is wireless or over Ethernet? I realize you could turn wireless off or unplug, but I figure there is an easier way.
    4) I assume different webs use different video formats. Does this affect the issue of buffering?
    Thanks
    Bob

Here is a good example I ran into today. It buffers so much it is unwatchable.

Out of curiosity, what is the speed of your Internet connection?
For example, I had problems with buffering on a variety of operating systems when I had a 640K DSL link that have largely gone away with a move to a 8M cable modem connection.

  • Grey screen with loading bar.how can i fix this watch the video below

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRrOc7fmnEw

Ok what is happening is this.
You have corruption in your MacintoshHD partition, OS X is loading partially and runs a at boot fsck drive check/repair on the MacintoshHD partition and it's failing, why you get a stuck loading bar while trying to boot.
You booted into RecoveryHD parttion and are trying to install OS X, however it can't be installed in RecoveryHD, nor Windows/BooCamp. Those partitions are not for OS X or don't have the right format.
If you can't over install OS X over itself into the MacintoshHD parititon, which is properly formatted for it, it means there is corruption there in that partition the sructure is damaged and needs to be erased.
If the MacintoshHD partition does't appear, it's also a serious issue and the entire drive will have to be erased to recreate the MacintoshHD partition.
Good news, your drive appears to work fine. It just needs data recovery and reformatting.
This is what your going to have to do.
1: Boot into RecoveryHD and use Disk Utiltiy and OS X installed onto a blank powered external drive, you then can hold the option/alt key to boot from it.
2: If you need to grab your recent files out of the MacintoshHD partition you can do that or use Data Rescue to try to recover from the corrupted system. Also you can use WinClone 3 to clone the BootCamp partition to another external drive.
3: Once you have your OS X users files and BootCamp cloned off, your ready to erase the ENTIRE drive (disk0) using the 3x security overwrite to map off the bad areas, then format and install OS X  just like you did on the external drive.
4: Holding the option/alt key down while booting gets you Startup Manager, where you can select what you want to boot from, external drives, Windows or MacintoshHD. System Preferences > Startup disk will make it pernament.
You can't boot from the cloned Bootcamp, but you can reverse it back on and then boot from it like before.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
    Reset your Mac
Make a bootable clone of your boot drive

  • How can I eliminate (watch) in videos that read "ERROR: DECODE ERROR"?

Usually when in a web site (like Fox News) & there's a video to watch I can't watch it due to the message "ERROR: DECODE ERROR". How can I eliminate this & watch the video? Thanks for your input.

Have you tried to reinstall Flash on your system, uninstall from the control panel, then install from get.adobe.com/flashplayer/‎ and try the video again.

How to watch Internet videos without adobe flash on ipad2?

You can't unless you try a browser like Skyfire which has met with mixed reviews. Some TV, news and sports networks have their own apps that stream compatible iPad content. You can search the app store and see what you can find.
In the U.S. I use ABC Player, HBOGo, NBC, TNT, TBS, CNN, CBS News, Fox News.

  • Restart during internet video

Has anyone else had a problem with your notebook restarting while watching internet video?
I've been having a problem with random restarts and I thought it was a heat problem (and it may still be). So I took it to the Apple store and of course they couldn't get it to restart even after stress testing the video. So lats night I was watching videos on adultswim.com and after about an hour or so, I had a restart. I went back to the same website, and once again after about an hour I got my restart again. I thought it might have been Firefox causing the problem, so I switched over to Safari. That didn't help.
So I'm just looking to see if anyone else has this problem and/or a solution. My only other option at this time is to take it back to the Apple store. Thanks for any assistance.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at, but this is what came up after I had a random shut down a few mins ago:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.10 (Build 8R2218)

    Jul 31 21:55:31 macbook17 usbmuxd[111]: ClientResult send to 0x301360 failed: 32 - Broken pipe

  • Screen dims when watching internet movies

My PBg4 screen becomes dim when watching internet videos or slide shows in iphoto or imovie.
I have to keep moving the mouse to keep the screen well lit.
Is there a way to fix this problem and still have the dim screen dim in all other situations where needed?

    Thank you so much.
I did not want to set the CP to never sleep, because in normal circumstances I want the screen to dim.
This way I can activate the non-sleep feature only when I need to.

  • How to Improve Adobe Flash Player to watch this video

When I wanted to watch Man City vs Chelsea live stream via http://footballity.blogspot.com/2013/08/man-city-live-stream-free.html , there is a message "You need to improve your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video" so anybody can help me..

Well going by your standards then the blackberry playbook is just as useless since there is no native contacts app or email app.  If you want that you will also have to have a blackberry phone that is capable of tethering using the blackberry bridge app (if allowed by AT&T and Verizon since that would be another fee technically you might be charged for since you will be tethering your phone to you tablet).
Funny how I and many others are able to get by using the iPad and we don't have flash.  The majority of people if the want to view flash will try Skyfire, iSwifter, Cloudbrowse, or will look to see if there is an app already dedicated to that thing you want to watch, like ABC Player or CNN.
Hey if doesn't work for you then it doesn't work for you.  I am not trying to come off as an Apple fanboy, just trying to make sure you are informed about your product and what options are out there.
Would it be nice if flash was allowed native......sure.  But it isn't so you can either get rid of the product, get an app that supports it (we are talking about spending $2 - $4) or go buy something else and hope your happy with it as well.  You can't please everyone.  Apple has chosen their stance and as you can see by sales numbers they aren't hurting.  Infact i just read about a week or so ago on Gizmodo.com that alot of the other tablet making companies are cutting back on the number of units they will be making due to low sales or projected low sales (you can thank the iPad sales for that).  Your one purchase isn't going to impact them that much.  Instead, someone else will be standing in line behind you ready and happy to get their apple product.

If you are unable to view content that has already been downloaded then you problem is within you device.  First shut it down all the way by holiding the sleep button at the top until the power off slide appears at the top of your screen. Then slide that and wait while it powers off. Give it a good 30 seconds to do this.  then power it back up. if that doesn't work, you may need to call the apple care folks. One other option is to restore it to factory settings and reload it with the updates first and then sink your media to it. You should already have it backed up to iCloud, but if not, do that first then do the restore.

  • How do I stop the taskbar from showing when I watch a video on full screen?

When I watch a video with Mozilla Firefox on sites like YouTube, Google Video or Bing Video in full screen the taskbar shows at the bottom of my screen and doesn't disappear like it does in Internet Explorer. How do I watch videos in full screen without the taskbar showing? It's not a website problem, it's not a Windows problem, it only does this on Mozilla Firefox's browser. All three websites play perfect full screen video on the Internet Explorer browser with no taskbar showing at the bottom..

    I got it :)
(I tried using Google Chrome but the same problem occurred, by the way).
    a) Right-click on the desktop area, click on "Personalize" then on "Display" (bottom left), "Set custom text size (DPI)" (left) and check "Use windows xp style DPI scaling".

  • HT1491 How come I can't watch purchased tv show on my ipad if not connected to Internet?

How come I can't watch purchased tv show on my ipad if not connected to Internet?

There are two kinds of content, streaming and downloaded. If your show is a streaming show you have to be on the internet to view it. (akin to you not being able to watch youtube videos without being on the net)
Downloaded files can be watched anytime (within the constraints of the DRM of course)

Yes the events are rebroadcast later but I expect they will be general and not specifically covering Canadian competitor. Commentary etc will be different.
