How to improve iMac G5 wireless strength?

My sons new MacBook has far superior signal strength compared to the connectivity of my iMac G5 (when machines are side by side). Also, the MacBook stays connected better, with the G5 occcasionally loosing connectivity. What can be done to improve the G5 connectivity? (the access point is a Linksys/Vonage access point router. Thanks.
Mark

Hello,
You could try opening the computer, and making sure that the AirPort antenna is fully connected to the AirPort card. If the cable / antenna is loose, then that might be part of the problem.
Here's Apple's articles on troubleshooting signal strength:

  • How to mirror iMac screen wirelessly through a mac mini connected to an hdmi port of HD TV?

I have a new Mac Mini connected to a Sony HD TV. On the same network but in a different room I have my iMac. I can control the iMac with wireless mouse and keyboard from the same room where the TV and Mac Mini reside. I would like to work on my iMac but use the HD TV as my monitor so I can show slideshows and iMovie projects without transferring files to the MacMini first. Is it possible, and if so, how do I go about setting it up?

Your iMac likely supports a higher resolution than the TV does. The maximum standard TVs today use is 1920x1080, and if your iMac is an Intel Core i3 or i5, its own display is at least that high of a resolution. Which model of iMac do you have?
If your iMac is running at least Leopard (10.5), then both machines have Screen Sharing built in. It can be accessed from the Finder, but as often as you would like to use it you should go to Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices and drag it (the icon) to your Dock. That will create the shortcut to get to it easily. As I noted before, the built in Screen Sharing VNC software doesn't do full screen, but third party VNC software can. Both machines do not need to be using the thrid party VNC software, just the one viewing - in this case your Mac mini. Chicken of the VNC is a popular free one, fairly easy to use:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
For more info about how to set up Screen Sharing and how to use the included application:
    http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/os-x/using-screen-sharing-in-os-x-leopard/
Note that you will have to use the settings in System Preferences, regardless of what VNC software you use. Both systems will need to have Screen Sharing settings enabled.

  • Here's a puzzler, how to improve reception on iMac Flat Panel, w/built-in

Here's a puzzler, how to improve reception on iMac Flat Panel, w/built-in airport card. I have done alot of research into cantennas and the like, including parabolic dishes etc. I am trying to connect to my friends open network a few houses away but get sporadic signal most of the time. Just for fun i took a piece of aluminum foil and fashioned a curved dish and saw the signal strength spike to more than double sometimes. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this. Since i am on the all in one iMac (the half sphere base style) Flat Panel i don't have the option of putting my antenna in a can, dish etc.
This is not a critical issue, i am obviously on line and getting along, but would still enjoy any suggestions for improving the performance on this airport card.
    Thanx in advance, Anykey

Hi! That's a puzzler only due to there being no external port for adding an
antenna outside of the one built-in the iMac!
Another option may involve some purchase; as you may be able to extend
your own wireless network by using an Apple airport base station as a
bridge to (perhaps) see a greater increase in signal strength; it could act
as a repeater for both receiving and sending the IP signal. Then, you could
administer the base station by ethernet cable.
There are a few on-machine antenna options for some models of Apple
computer at QuickerTek online; they clip outside of PowerBooks, etc and
are said to not intrude or require wires into them in order to work externally.
I am not sure, but suspect the Quicker antennas may use USB power.
And that brings into the question the use of external USB wi-fi devices
and altering them into a directional antenna; most of these have the
wi-fi card and antenna built into the same little module. Then you may
have to make your own dish to focus the beam after all!
I hear a small dish network satellite dish could be used to capture or
send signals, but do not know if you'd need a powered device to use it.
That would have to be for "line-of-sight" use, of course.
Some links I'd posted somewhere in Discussions were to a few inventive
antenna and base DIY sites; I no longer have the urls saved...!
Best of luck in this matter!

  • How can two computers in one room have different wireless strength?

I have a Time Capsule that is a few years old. I also have a MacMini that is about 5 years old. I moved the Mac Mini from one side of the room to another in front of the window. When the Mac Mini was in its old space the wireless strength showed all the bars. Now that it is in the new area it shows 2 to 3 bars. What makes it even stranger is if I am using my Macbook Pro at the same time the other computer is on even in another room it has the wireless strength showing all the bars. How is this possible? Why is this happening? What could be causing this problem? Help!!

There are 3 antennas on the old TC.. around the 3 sides.. none in the front where the ports are.. Wireless is highly affected by location and how many antennas it directly sees.. if there is any material in the way of direct line between the two.. any metal wlll reflect signal.. that includes the metal frame inside the TC and the metal parts inside the mac mini.. so small orientation changes hugely affect wireless.  !!
And water like dampness in bricks.. or even including the meat popsicles hitting the keyboard, sitting between the TC and the client computer will absorb the wifi. You are after all 50-70% water.. all wifi takes place in direct line.. get into the line and your body will be the barrier. The antenna in the Mac Mini are also located somewhere probably around the sides.. make sure you align them so a person can see from one to the other and orientate it so the antennas (hidden) can see each other.. plastic is invisible to them. With nothing in the way.
Laptops have better spaced and superior type antennas.. and probably a totally different wireless card.
It will also depend on the band it uses. A 5year old mini .. is that G or N wireless?? If N wireless then it is probably single band ie 2.4ghz.
The laptop if recent may use either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
So you see there are many factors.

  • How do I make my iMac g4 wireless?

I have an iMac g4 with 10.4 running. How can I make it wireless? If I can where is a good place to buy the part. I know apple does not make it anymore. Thanks for any help in advance.

iMac G4s of different ages could run different versions of the Airport Card.  If yours was only compatible with the original Airport Card, then I would just get a WiFi ethernet bridge, since it won't support 802.11g, or WPA2 encryption. Apple's UFO like Airport Extreme base stations can all function as a WiFi ethernet bridge that is easy to setup on all iMac G4s.      Some third party routers work as well, but you have to isolate which ones can run on 10.4. Those that came with Airport Extreme capability you can find an Airport Extreme card made for them, and while it is limited to 802.11g, unless you are doing major local area network traffic, or streaming to an AppleTV, 802.11g is plenty good with WPA2 encryption.    To find out if yours qualifies, use this guide to find out which iMac G4 you have:

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • New iMac 2012 - Wireless Capabilities?

    I have just ordered a new 21.5" 2012 iMac
(with these being back-ordered by many suppliers, hopefully it will arrive in my lifetime ...)
The question I have is, I know it comes with some sort of built-in "Airport" wireless support, but wanted to know a little more in detail:
    1.  Will I need a separate Apple "Extreme" base, besides the built-in iMac capable wireless .... if I want to use iPone, iPod Touch, iPad, etc. in he house?
    2.  Is the built-in iMac "Airport", enough to act as a decent base router for house use?
    3.  If the built-in "Airport" does work as a wireless "base" (of sorts), does the iMac need to be on all the time for it to transmit?
Any info on the workings of the built-in wireless capabilities of the new 2012 iMac will be appreciated. Thanks

I never did get back to this original post, concerning if the new 2013 iMac's could transmit WiFi from the built-in Airport Extreme ….. well I'm reporting they can. it's easy to set-up too.
    This is basically whats involved:
    1. Turn on WiFi "ON" using menu bar icon
        OR ...
WiFi can also be turned on in "System Preferences / Shared", by clicking on the "Internet Sharing" and
        getting pop-down window to appear.
    2.  Then, go to "System Preference" (in Menu), and OPEN "Sharing"
Then, set "Share your internet connection from "Ethernet" … click-on "WiFi" in "To computers using" …
Then, click-on "Internet Sharing" in left box ...
This pop-down window will appear …. click START …
"Internet Sharing" is now ON ...
…. and DONE …. your iMac is now transmitting WiFi
This is what the 2013 iMac shows in "System Report" under "Network/WiFi"
The Airport Extreme is obviously built-in to the 2013 iMac.
… and I am amazed at the strength and distance the WiFi signal, coming from my iMac, is. I've walked out
into our back yard (100' -150') and the WiFi signal is strong enough to carry in that range, from having the iMac indoors
…. with plenty of strength to cover WiFi devices in the house (as I have iPhone and Apple TV running great off the iMac WiFi signal.
This built-in iMac WiFi option is a nice additional hardware addition to the new 2013 iMac line …. Apple got this iMac Built-in WiFi right !
NOTE:  Of course you will have to set-up the "Computer Name" for your local network
(in the "Sharing Folder" in System Preferences).
And you will also have to set up "configure an internet-sharing network" info
(in the Sharing Folder", in System Preferences, under the "WiFi Options" button)

  • How come my iMac and MacBook connect to my AirPort Extreme but my iPhone and iPad 2 won't?

How come my iMac and MacBook connect to my AirPort Extreme but my iPhone and iPad 2 don't?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.
