How to improve my video productions

My wife and I do video production for her sister's musical programs at a local private school. I need tips on improving the quality of the productions. Below is a list of equipment that we use and a few questions about filming/editing these musical programs.
Camera: Sony DSR-PDX10
Tripod: Manfrotto MA055XWNB (just purchased)
Head: Manfrotto 701HDV Fluid Head (just purchased)
Tapes: Sony DVC 60 minute
Sound: Directional XLR mic that came with the Sony / XLR line-in from soundboard
on some programs
System: MacBook Pro 15" 2.8GHz 4GB ram (recently purchased)
Software: iMovie/iDVD
- Should I be using Final Cut Express for editing instead of iMovie and is there a big learning curve for it?
- Is there a better DVD software that I should be using to author the discs?
- Would you recommend a DVD burner or use the super drive in the MacBook? I'm concerned about wearing the super drive out, if we burn too many DVD's.
- I'm burning copies of the disc image at 2x speed. Is this low enough to get the best quality. I'd prefer to not have to burn them at 1x.
- The recordings sound good to us when using the directional mic, but it does pick up some of the crowd noise like coughing, etc. Any suggestions on a sound solution is also welcomed.
Our purpose is to provide the parents a copy of the performance if they choose
not to video it themselves. We only charge a nominal fee for the discs (about the price of a store bought movie) which we think is fair considering the enormous amount of time that goes into filming/editing and burning the discs.
Thanks in advance for your time and input.

nice device.. not the latest, but a good 'working horse', esp. the pro-connector XLR for an ext. mic.
iMHD6 =fine, iMovie08/09 = no good..
iM08/09 has an odd behavior handling interlaced input.. to make it short: in usual use, resolution will drop by half on export ..
*FCE learning curve* = steem! but manageable and, with the little help of a book of FC-mastermind Tom Wolfsky (amazon..) you are a pro within weeks..
with some skills and imagination, you can give your projects some 'pro attitude' - but, be warned: FCE is NO 'one click done' solution as iM! no templates, themes, ready-mades ..
*better DVD software?* - DVDSP, part of FCP=$$$$ .. but better for your needs? may I recommend my own site about 'modding' iDVD-menus: http://sites.google.com/site/idvdmodding/
*superdrive wear-out?* yes, yes, YES! these slot-ins are not meant for 'mass production'. get any ext. DVD-burner - done.
we read reports, Verbatim disks work perfectly with 4x (some say 8x) speed ..
*catching noise* - rule#1 in audio-recording: you never can come too close.. consider 'poor man's 2nd unit': get any cheap miniDV-camcorder with a good/excellent ext-mic; put this as 'audio recorder' as close as possible to subjects; use the audio-track only of that device ..
professional solution: mics attached to each performer, mixer.. = $$$$

  • CCME : how to improve the video quality on VideoOverIP

    Hi,
I'm testing Video OVer IP between a CCM and a CCME.
Whe the call is on, the video quality are different :
from the CCM, it is very good
but from the CCME, the quality is less good.
So how can I do to improve this quality.
    Best regards

You can improve the video quality on VideoOverIP with QoS. The primary goal of Quality of Service (QoS) is to make network service better and more predictable by providing dedicated bandwidth, controlled jitter and latency, and improved loss characteristics. QoS achieves these goals by providing tools for managing network congestion, shaping network traffic, using expensive wide-area links more efficiently, and setting traffic policies across the network.

    compressor: high
    Scan mode : Progressive
    Aspect ratio : 16:9
    Size Dimension : PAL 720 X 576 16:9
    Audio 48000
On toast, the video was imported to the DVD-Video window and using the following encoding optios the video was burn on the dvd.
    Video Format : MPEG-2
    Average Bitrate: 7.5
    Maximum Bitrate: 8.5
Motion Estimate: Best and the Half-PEL was ticked
Other available optins in the window is Automatic.
the video I finally obtained on dvd was blur/not sharpe and fade in colour compare to the original videos.
Any help on what I can do to inprove the quality of my video on dvd?
    Thanks.
    Skimy Kinyot.

    Hello Tom,
Let me clarify: Typically, I am viewing the material on a flat screen TV.
But it was also projected on a big screen in a movie theater for a film festival. (DVD player plugged to a projector)
For the TV screen, I would say the quality is not great but acceptable.
But on a large movie theater screen the artefacts are very visible.
What can I do to improve the quality for a projection?
    Cheers.

  • How to improve poor video quality in iMovie?

I have a movie in iTunes (version 10.6.3).  When I play the video, the quality is good on my Mac, on my iPad 3 and on my Apple TV.  The Apple TV is hooked to a 42-inch LCD TV.
Next, I open the video file (MP4) using QuickTime Player.  I use the Edit and Trim commands to create a 1-minute segment from the video.  I save the segment from Quick Time Player.  The saved segment is a MOV file.  I drag and drop the MOV file back into iTunes.  When I play it from iTunes, the quality still is good on all my Apple devices - no noticeable difference from the original.
Now, I import the MOV segment into iMovie 11 (version 9.0.8).  At import, I tick the Optimize Video check box and I select the Full - Original Size setting. Once imported, I select Share > Publish To iTunes.  I do not make any changes to the video clip in iMovie.  I publish to iTunes using all five size settings: Mobile, Medium, Large, HD 720p and HD 1080p.  Once in iTunes, I play the video again.  Now the quality is poor, lots of pixelation in all five size settings.
iMovie appears to be doing something to the video to degrade its quality.  Maybe I have a setting wrong somewhere.  Anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent the degradation in video quality?  Thx

Hey Brad, the MP4 movie in iTunes is 806 MB.  The segment I trimmed in QuickTime Player and saved as an MOV file is 18 MB.
When I export the MOV segment from QuickTime Player to my desktop, the export format options that appear are: Movie; 480p; 720p; and iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV.  Which do you recommend?
When I do Share > Export Using Quicktime in iMovie, there are a bunch of Export and Use options.  Which do you recomend?
    Thx

  • How to improve the video quality send by lync 2013?

we have one sip client  make call with lync 2013 client, and each other support MS rtv video capabilities, after the sip session begin, then video rtp packet send on each directory, all the time our client send 720p video codec to lync 2013 client
, but we only receive the lower format video codec from lync 2013 , and the video format is changed all the time ,some times is 720p then 960*544, then 960*720, or 630*360,,etc. we wonder how can lync client send stable 720p video codec, and we have acheive

    thank you
now we realy have enoght network bandwidth, is heigher to 4-6Mbps, so I think which is in one right work enviroment.
Now I notice that the video format received from lync 2013 at the begining of the call is 720p,  and some times change to 960*720, or 960*544, but for many time it may be change between these three  formats, but in some times the video format would
change to 640*360, once which change to this mode then it would keep in this sitiunation for long long  time, and would never chanege to the heigher ones so it is one incredible things.
how could we change this sitiuation to get one good video format for heigher video effect.

  • How to improve the video quality of jpg clips

I am using several jpg stills in my sequence. They look like crap when I output to QT. Any suggestions?

Regardless of the pixel dimensions of your original images, they are rendered to FCP's current Sequence settings. That might be as low as 720x480. The rest is thrown away.
Make sure you view the files in QuickTime Player 7 not QT Player X and set the preference check box to use High Quality playback.

  • Tutorial: How To Improve YouTube Playback on iBook G3 (Dual USB)

This is a brief tutorial on how to improve YouTube video playback on an Apple iBook G3. As of now, I have only tested this method on my own iBook. iBook's with lower specs than the 900 MHz model may not receive the same performance upgrade from this brief tutorial. With that said, here is what you can do to attempt to make YouTube more functional on your iBook G3.
    1) If the iBook is running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), disable Dashboard and Spotlight:
While widgets are fun and Spotlight is a useful quick search tool, they are known resource consumers that make video playback problematic for older Mac laptops, such as the iBook G3. To accomplish this, you will have to use the Terminal. Once the Terminal is open, enter the following command
    {color:purple}defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES{color}
After entering this command, you will then need to restart the Dock (Dashboard is owned by the Dock). To do so, again, using the Terminal, you will enter the following command.
    {color:purple}killall Dock{color}
You may still see the Dashboard icon in the Dock, but clicking on it should do nothing.
For the next part, you will use the Terminal to disable Spotlight. Open the Terminal and enter the following command.
    {color:purple}sudo nano /etc/hostconfig{color}
This will bring up a configuration listing. Use the arrow keys to scroll down and change the value, SPOTLIGHT=-YES-, to SPOTLIGHT=-NO-.
From here, you should press Ctrl+X to exit, upon which it will ask if you want to save. Follow the on screen prompts to save, and exit out of the Terminal. Spotlight will still appear in the corner of your screen, but it won't search for anything. Now on to the next step.
    2) For any video URL on YouTube, add &fmt=5 to the end of the URL, and this will force videos to run in quarter VGA mode (320x240). The video quality will be degraded, but you should maintain a stable frame rate that is uninterrupted and capable of streaming without the need to pause and wait for the entire video to load.
This method has worked for me for old and new videos alike. Unfortunately, I have not found a way to make iTunes/Quicktime force videos into a low resolution mode, so this fix will only resolve video playback involving YouTube.
*To restore functionality to Dashboard and Spotlight:*
    1) How to Restore the Dashboard
Open the terminal and input the following command
    {color:purple}defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO {color}
After entering this command, you will have to restart the Dock. To do so, enter the following command into the terminal
    {color:purple}killall Dock{color}
Now, can drag the Dashboard icon back to the Dock, or if you did not remove it to begin with, it should function once again.
    2) How to restore Spotlight
Open the terminal and enter the following command
    {color:purple}sudo nano /etc/hostconfig{color}
This will open up a config file. Scroll down (using the arrow keys) to the portion that says SPOTLIGHT=-NO- and change the value so that it says SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
Exit the config file by pressing Ctrl+X. Follow the onscreen prompts to save the config file, and you are allset.
Best of luck to you all. I hope that this tutorial has been helpful.

My videos from my iphone are horrible when I transfer them to my PC. How can I improve the video on my PC? Can I just convert the files to WMV? When the video plays the speed is off, it's half slow-motion and staggers into normal play. The clips are slightly cut as well, the clips do not roll continuously.  I'm taling about videos that are no more than 2 minutes long.  I'm frustrated and I could really use some advice-my kids basketball games is what I'm recording and I'm trying to send them to my family (they are not very tech savvy). Thanks

Not it's only function but one for which it was most admirably suited, which is why I really hope someone can find a work around. I am hoping my post to the Apple feedback may prompt a useful response from Apple and I live in hope that my post here will elicit a useful response from another user. I did not miss the the text at the top of the feedback form but you presumably missed my initial text, 'someone here can explain' or my subsequent 'work around from another user'
Just in case anyone reading this has a large collection of music videos, video podcasts or iTunes U then DO NOT upgrade your iPad to iOS 5. If you are considering purchasing the iPad as a useful mobile device to experience these media organised in your iTunes please don't as you will be wasting your money. (unless someone on this forum knows of a way to undo the mess created by those infallible folks at Apple)
Yes I know it does other things but the purpose I bought it for doesn't work anymore

  • Imovie to Quicktime to FLV = poor quality video...how to improve

I finally have a system down for getting video footage from Imovie onto my site:
1.From Imovie Export using Quick time.
2.W/ FLV crunch converter software Convert file into FLV.
3.Insert FLV onto page and upload.
The good news is this works, the bad news is the quality of  video is very poor. Any ideas on how I could improve the video quality?

When you are talking "Quality" you are basically talking about the amount of incoming data required for one set display size... that's the video bitrate (the minimum amount of data flowing into the video player to continue the display uninterupted).
If you are using the same bitrate as shown in your first image, "256kbps" and a display of "352 x 288 px", you are on the very low end of producing high quality... that bitrate at that size is more like medium quality. And then if the actual display size is increased on the web page at all, the quality will only degrade further. and you will never improve the quality with successive "converting" you'll only degrade it.
If you do have to "convert" to a different file format, be sure to render the starting file at no less than double the bitrate that you want to finish with. So for example, if you must "convert" a file and you plan to use a 750kbps final video bitrate, you must start with at least a 1500kbps video, (even 5 or 6 times that is better) so that you have a plenty of extra data, which will get destroyed during the "convertion" process.
Here is a little background info on bitrate as it relates to display size:
    Video bit rate
One of the principle of goal setting is to "Begin with the end in mind". In this case it'll be very hard to give good recommendations because the end is not defined. So I'll just make a few assumptions and you can correct me as needed.
First, I'll assume that since you are converting to Flash, you want to deliver this video over the Internet. If that's true, then we'll have to make some assumptions on the Internet connection download speeds of your potential viewers. Let's just say that most have at least a 1.5Mb connection or faster.
OK, that would mean that a video bitrate of half that should usually provide a video download that is not interupped by buffering (most of the time anyway). So assuming a video bitrate of 750kbps, what would the optimum display dimensions be?
Before we decide, here's a little info about bitrate. For highest quality playback, the video bitrate is tied directly to the display dimensions. That is, the larger the display, the more incoming data is required to properly display the video. Think of bitrate in terms of a can of paint. If you have 1 quart of paint, you might be able to do a very nice job on a 32 X 24 foot area. But if you try to stretch that same amount of paint out over a 64 X 48 foot area, the coverage will not be nearly as good and you get poor results.
In the same way, a video displayed at 640 X 480 pixels will require 4 times the bitrate as a video displayed at 320 X 240 pixels to produce the same quality. So for example a video with a bitrate of 100kbps, displayed at 160 X 120 will produce the same quality results as a video with a bitrate of 1600kbps if displayed at 640 X 480.
So to boil it all down, video bitrates of 750kbps, even up to 1000kbps can usually get delivered of the Internet on most high speed connections. Higher bit rates may work for really fast connections but will cause problems for viewers with slower connections. Video display size has a direct bearing on the final quality. In the 750 to 1000kbps range, display size should be kept around 450 or 500 width max (and whatever height the aspect ratio calls for). Yes it can be displayed larger, but the quality will suffer.
Sound like your audio settings are fine, especially for Internet delivery.
As for framerate, maintain the original raw video framerate for best results. So if the video was shot at 24fps, leave it.
As for video converters, do you have the Flash 8 Video Converter? It works just fine for video to be delivered over the Internet. Remember, you are taking a Cadillac version of video (h.264 HD) and stuffing it into a Chevy body to get it to work over the Internet.
    Best wishes,
    Adninjastrator

  • How do I include a website footage on a video production in Premiere CS5?

    Hi All,
I have seen various websites shown on TV and wondered how they did it. Kindly advice me on how to feature a website on a video production using Premiere cs5? Do I need to take a video shot of the website first (panning and tilting) before it is captured and moved to the timeline, or is there a software that I could use for capturing the website before editing it in Premiere?
    Thanks

I use Camtasia Studio to record computer screen captures.  I created a tutorial for editing Camtasia Studio footage in Premiere Pro:

When I use AirPlay to mirror a video through my iPad there is a lag at times. Does anyone know how to improve this?

Since I updated my apple TV firmware the other day to 4.4.2 (3160) My video streamed from my iphone 4s loads inconsistently, and more troubling, much more slowly that with the previous version of the software.
Since I'm not technically, 'mirroring' as you are, on it's face, doesn't seem related. I'm just throwing this out since after looking for comments about radical changes in airplay after this update, I couldn't find much on this.
Did you install  this latest Apple TV update?  For me it's an  obvious difference. Previously I could start the airplay from my phone and not really have delays for loadiing or buffering. I don't have any other  'load' on my wifi or anything new that could be delaying the link from phone to airpay.
    Anyone?.....

Would not like that to happen whilst on an assignment 'on the road' !!!
    Plaese advise !!! Thanks

I am told MacKeeper causes problems. Hopefully you did not install that.
The only idea remaining is to uninstall/clean/reinstall.
    Let's go over that:
No need to deactivate, so skip that.
In your CS6 folder is a shortcut to the uninstaller. I would like you to check "Remove Preferences" when you run the uninstaller.
When that's done, download the CS-CC Cleaner for the Mac.  Run that.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
As far as your Mac goes, Run Disk Utility on your volume.
    Verify Disk
    Repair Permissions.
    Then reinstall CS6 and updates.
It's is a "nuke and pave" approach, but if you do not want to be messing with internals you do not understand, it's the best way to go.
