How to improve TREX Search experience?

Most of our users are not happy with the search results. Since the default TREX search is based on relevance, it shows all the documents matching the keywords so it's difficult to find the particular document they are looking for.
I have put few points together to see it would help to improve the search experience. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions and feedback.
1) The default TREX search performs a full-text search in the title, the description, and the content. Add additional metadata information of the document, and customize the search interface so that the end user can search documents by topic, keywords, region, author, etc.
2) Assign comma separated keywords in the document description while uploading. TREX finds it.
3) Create custom properties with pre-assigned keywords. You can pick the keywords for the documents using pick lists from the custom properties or use it in the advanced search.
4) For HTML files in the CM repository, develop a custom extractor for the META tags such as title, keywords, description, author, etc.,
5) For MS office documents, configure the TREX python extension to extract the Dublin Core metadata. So, in the advanced search, people can search using document title, description, subject, keywords, and so on.
6) Tweak the search interface to make it more presentable to the end user by setting tags for certain indexes such as KM, People Search, Invoice, Collaboration Rooms, and etc., So that the user can navigate between the tabs in search results.
Thanks.

TREX search can also search based on the date, author, modified date, modified by etc....
You need to add the sort priority in your search option set. You can customize the search functionality based on your need by modifying the search option set and search component set.

• How to improve the performance of DS search ?

Hi,all
I have done a test in my DS 5.2 patch 6 as follows:
1. 1 Use the cn=directory manager to search a user entry (uid=99999, and the entry belongs to about 150 groups):
[23/Mar/2009:16:54:26 +0800] conn=3645300 op=7 msgId=8 - SRCH base="o=xxx.edu" scope=2 filter="(uid=99999)" attrs=ALL
[23/Mar/2009:16:54:26 +0800] conn=3645300 op=7 msgId=8 - RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=1 etime=0
1.2 Use the cn=directory manager to search a user entry (uid=06258, and the entry belongs to about 15 groups):
[23/Mar/2009:17:02:09 +0800] conn=3645371 op=7 msgId=8 - SRCH base="o=xxx.edu" scope=2 filter="(uid=06258)" attrs=ALL
[23/Mar/2009:17:02:09 +0800] conn=3645371 op=7 msgId=8 - RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=1 etime=0
So, the two results are similar, there is a perfect performance.
2.1 Use the "uid=vcampusconn,ou=people,o=xxx.edu" to search a user entry (uid=99999, and the entry belongs to about 150 groups):
[23/Mar/2009:17:05:51 +0800] conn=3646027 op=4 msgId=5 - SRCH base="o=xxx.edu" scope=2 filter="(uid=99999)" attrs=ALL
[23/Mar/2009:17:06:02 +0800] conn=3646027 op=4 msgId=5 - RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=1 etime=11
2.2 Use the "uid=vcampusconn,ou=people,o=xxx.edu" to search a user entry (uid=06258, and the entry belongs to about 15 groups):
[23/Mar/2009:17:08:49 +0800] conn=3646036 op=5 msgId=6 - SRCH base="o=xxx.edu" scope=2 filter="(uid=06258)" attrs=ALL
[23/Mar/2009:17:08:50 +0800] conn=3646036 op=5 msgId=6 - RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=1 etime=1
So, the tow results are very different. And the 2.1's performance is unsatisfactory.
In a word, How Can I Improve the Search Performance When I use "uid=vcampusconn,ou=people,o=xxx.edu" to search a user entry which belongs to many groups?
Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Shen

Whether or not the entry belongs to many groups should not affect your search since you are not searching for group memberships.
The "cn=Directory Manager" is not subject to ACI's. Do you have a lot of ACI's defined in your directory? It's possible the ACI evaluation for the vcampusconn user is taking a long time....

• Ajax framework : how to remove the Trex search field ?

Hi community,
I am trying to remove the TRex search field in an ajax framework. As for the "normal" framework I make not visible the tool page, even in the headerless framework, but it is still displaying...
Has someone ever face this problem ?
Thanks a lot.

Hi Fabien
I am not sure if i got your question currectly
In general on the Ajax Framework page there is the masthead iview
On the masthead iview there is a property "Enable Search" that allows you to enable and disable the search box in the page.
Please try to use it
There is now search box of the framewrok in headerless window
the search box is probably part of the application.

• How to improve spreadsheet speed when single-threaded VBA is the bottleneck.

My brother works with massive Excel spreadsheets and needs to speed them up. Gigabytes in size and often with a million rows and many sheets within the workbook. He's already refined the sheets to take advantage of Excel's multi-thread recalculation and
seen significant improvements, but he's hit a stumbling block. He uses extensive VBA code to aid clarity, but the VB engine is single-threaded, and these relatively simple functions can be called millions of times. Some functions are trivial (e.g. conversion
functions) and just for clarity and easily unwound (at the expense of clarity), some could be unwound but that would make the spreadsheets much more complex, and others could not be unwound.
He's aware of http://www.analystcave.com/excel-vba-multithreading-tool/ and similar tools but they don't help as the granularity is insufficiently fine.
So what can he do? A search shows requests for multi-threaded VBA going back over a decade.
qts

Hi,
>> The VB engine is single-threaded, and these relatively simple functions can be called millions of times.
The Office Object Model is
Single-Threaded Apartments, if the performance bottleneck is the Excel Object Model operation, the multiple-thread will not improve the performance significantly.
>> How to improve spreadsheet speed when single-threaded VBA is the bottleneck.
The performance optimization should be based on the business. Since I’m not familiar with your business, so I can only give you some general suggestions from the technical perspective. According to your description, the size of the spreadsheet had reached
Gigabytes and data volume is about 1 million rows. If so, I will suggest you storing the data to SQL Server and then use the analysis tools (e.g. Power Pivot).
Create a memory-efficient Data Model using Excel 2013
and the Power Pivot add-in
As
ryguy72 suggested, you can also leverage some other third party data processing tool
according to your business requirement.

Jeffrey

• TREX/ search in ABAP

Dear sirs, I need your expertize.
I was asked to provide a solution where I need to work with the TREX search from ABAP.
I would like to know if anybody here has any experience with this and can guide me to some documentation sources or can give any direct advise how to start with the topic.
For example: there are demo/testing programs for all various modules/ technologies etc. in the ERP, does anybody know if there is something like that for the TREX? Like for ALV, WD, Adobe forms... something where I can see some basics about how this works.
Thank you for your time and effort,
have a nice day, everybody,
regards Otto

the direct TREX APIs are not released for project development. The JAVA API is, of course, technically accessible, but SAP does not support project developments against it. It is an API for internal use (e.g. KM <-> TREX) only.
As the direct TREX APIs are not planned to be release and will remain reserved for SAP solution <-> TREX communication only (e.g. KM to TREX, BI to TREX, etc.), it does not matter how much delta there is. Sorry...

• Performance blocker on cFP-2020: file-I/O! How to improve?

Hi all,
after resolving my serial-communication problems I still have a performance problem. The code is way too slow which causes e.g. the ftp-server on the fieldpoint to not respond anymore to requests from my PC. I always get timeouts. I also frequently get loop-finished-late events within my two state-machines. I have now used the timing and performance monitor to sse which vi is taking so much time. The result: A file-I/O vi that writes data and log-entries into three different log-files. With a former verion I simply used one vi that appends a string to an existing file. However, since this function disappeared with LV8.2 I had to rewrite the code to use the following sequence of LV-functions:
- file open
- set pointer to the end
- write string
- file close
My vi shich calls this sequence is horribly slow - execution time per run is about 200ms and the top of the list in the performance monitor. Are there any suggestions on how to improve this code? I simply want to add a string to the end of the log-file......
The vi is attached. There are two features in the code which are not self-explanatory: The first sub-vi generates a new file if is used for longer than a preset time (15 minutes in my case). So the create-time of the file is stored in the filename and whenever the current time exceeds create-time plus 15 min. A new file name is created. For simplicity, the name is stored only for the first of the three log-files. The other two are created by string operations from the first filename. Second, whenever a file is "created", that means is does not exist yet, a data-header is written to the file, before data is appended.
Can you see simple improvements here that will accelerate this code? Maybe open the file only once and then append data subsequently and only close it when a new file is created? But I do not need all three files all the times, there may be situations where only one file is needed, and the others need not be created at all.
Thanks,
Olaf

I think moving the open file, move to end of file, and close file out of the loop would certainly help. These functions could be associated with or built into your "determine new file" VI. Since the file paths get passed into the loops, you could pass them through with shift registers so that you can close them after the loops end.
One other thing to look at is your initialize array and insert into array functions. I believe insert into array is one of the costlier functions. Build array would be better. And initializing a much larger array and using replace array subset is better yet. But if you wind up with more elements than you had originally initialized for, you will have to use build array to enlarge it. I would recommend searching the Labview forum for insert into array, build array, and replace array subset for threads that do a better job explaining the differences and advantages of each.
Thanks, that improved the performance of this vi by about two orders of magnitude. The application is now much more stable.
However, I cannot connect to the cFP-2020 anymore by ftp. I even swithed the fieldpoint to boot without vi.
To be specific, I can access the cFP and cd into all directories except for the directory with the data. I assume that there is a large
amount of files in it now, but used to work before even with lots of files. The only thing that might be not so nice is that there is a space
in the folder name, but that has been like that for years now and used to work.
Is there any reason (corrupted file or something like that) that can cause the ftp to fail on this specific directory?
Thanks,
Olaf
...at least I am very close now to a satisfying and running system.... :-)

Hi
You check in SM50 by executing the programing, You will come to know which select is taking more time and accordingly you modify that select.
You can do SQL trace and Run time analysis and analyse and see.
check this and use
1) Dont use nested select statements
2) If possible use for all entries in addition
3) In the where addition make sure you give all the primary key
4) Use Index for the selection criteria.
5) You can also use inner joins
6) You can try to put the data from the first select statement into an Itab and then in order to select the data from the second table use for all entries in.
7) Use the runtime analysis SE30 and SQL Trace (ST05) to identify the performance and also to identify where the load is heavy, so that you can change the code accordingly

ABAP performance depends upon various factors and in devicded in three parts:
1. Database
2. ABAP
3. System
Run Any program using SE30 (performance analys) to improve performance refer to tips and trics section of SE30, Always remember that ABAP perfirmance is improved when there is least load on Database.
u can get an interactive grap in SE30 regarding this with a file.
also if u find runtime of parts of codes then use :
Switch on RTA Dynamically within ABAP Code
*To turn runtim analysis on within ABAP code insert the following code
SET RUN TIME ANALYZER ON.
*To turn runtim analysis off within ABAP code insert the following code
SET RUN TIME ANALYZER OFF.
Always check the driver internal tables is not empty, while using FOR ALL ENTRIES

Try to avoid joins and use FOR ALL ENTRIES.
Try to restrict the joins to 1 level only ie only for tables
Avoid using Select *.
Avoid having multiple Selects from the same table in the same object.
Try to minimize the number of variables to save memory.
The sequence of fields in 'where clause' must be as per primary/secondary index ( if any)
Avoid creation of index as far as possible
Avoid operators like <>, > , < & like % in where clause conditions
Avoid select/select single statements in loops.
Try to use 'binary search' in READ internal table. Ensure table is sorted before using BINARY SEARCH.
Avoid using aggregate functions (SUM, MAX etc) in selects ( GROUP BY , HAVING,)
Avoid using ORDER BY in selects

• How to improve speed of data acquisition? Help needed urgently.

I want to convert analog signals to digital signals and simultaneously perform some search on the data acquired and this whole process has to be done continuously for few hours.
So I tried writing two programs in Matlab, one acquires the analog data and converts it to digital and saves the data in small chunks on hard disk (like file1, file2, file3,...) continuously. The other program performs the search operation in those chunks of data continuously. I run both the programs at a time by opening two mat lab windows.
But the problem Iam facing is that the data acquisition is slow. As a result I get an error message in the second program saying that
"??? Error using ==> load
Unable to read file file4.mat: No such file or directory."
Iam unable to synchronize the two programs. I cannot use timers in search program because I cannot add any delays.
Iam using a NI PCI-6036E ,16 Bit Resolution ,200 KS/s Sampling Rate A/D board.
Should I switch to some other series such as M series having sampling rate of the order MS/s?
Can anyone please tell me how to improve the speed of data acquisition?
Thanks.

• How to use TREX in Netweaver Portals

Hi,
I am new to TREX and i installed TREX 7.0 with Netweaver 2004's java edition and performed Post Configuration for Java client HTTP settings.
Now i am unable how to use TREX in Portals for searching the documents in KM.
Can any one help me how to use the TREX for searching the documents in Km if possible plz attach the screen shots.
ADV Thanks
Regds
Phani

Hi Phani,
You can test your TREX server by executing the following step:
Log on to your TREX server and open up the TREX console which you can find in the TREX program folder. Normally you are now inside the python_support folder.
Execute the following script by typing: "python runInstallationText.py" and hit Enter.
The script carries out the following tests:
● Deleting any test indexes that were generated for a previous script run
● Creating a test index
● Indexing documents
● Testing search functions
● Exact, error-tolerant (fuzzy), and linguistic searches
● Search using Boolean operators such as AND and OR
The results are displayed at the end of the script run. You see the tested calls and their statuses (OK or Failed).
When you run the script for the first time, the call “Delete Index” has the status Failed. This is because there was no existing text index to be deleted. If this is the only cell with the status Failed, the test was successful.
Below you will see the final output generated by the test script. As stated near the bottom of this screenshot our TREX is running very well or not if there is a problem.
Best regards,
Tom.

• File name to be considered while Trex Search in CV04N,

Dear Sap Gurus,
I know TREX can search and list the documents using any Word or Characters inside the original file, but i have a requirement to search the document by there File Names,i tried giving File names in CV04N Trex search window, but it is not giving any results for me,
how can i make the trex search consider the file names also while searching in CV04N,
In SAP DMS is there a standard search functionality to search the documents by there File name?
Awaiting response
Thanks and regards
Kumar

Thanks for your response,
i know we can search the documents through Classification or description details using CV04N, but
while searching any document the user wishes to fill up the details only at one field ie... the Trex search window in the CV04N screen, and he will not be interested in filling the values at the classification TAB and the description Tabs,
we need a single point of search through Trex search Window in CV04N, ie... when this Trex search field is filled appropriately,( like the classification value, Long text value,)
this values should search the documents with this Classification or Long text values in DIR and display the results,
i could not succeed in getting the trex search working with this values, is there any thing missing from DMS config????
FYI,
we have Portal Document search through DMS through DMS Connector, and in this Trex Search we could find the DMS documents using the file Names as well, but strangely the same thing is not possible through CV04N trex Search,
Thanks and regards

• Tutorial: How To Improve YouTube Playback on iBook G3 (Dual USB)

Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. Apple encourages you to first seek a solution at Apple Support. The following links are provided as is, with no guarantee of the effectiveness or reliability of the information. This is a brief tutorial on how to improve YouTube video playback on an Apple iBook G3. As of now, I have only tested this method on my own iBook. iBook's with lower specs than the 900 MHz model may not receive the same performance upgrade from this brief tutorial. With that said, here is what you can do to attempt to make YouTube more functional on your iBook G3.
1) If the iBook is running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), disable Dashboard and Spotlight:
While widgets are fun and Spotlight is a useful quick search tool, they are known resource consumers that make video playback problematic for older Mac laptops, such as the iBook G3. To accomplish this, you will have to use the Terminal. Once the Terminal is open, enter the following command
{color:purple}defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES{color}
After entering this command, you will then need to restart the Dock (Dashboard is owned by the Dock). To do so, again, using the Terminal, you will enter the following command.
{color:purple}killall Dock{color}
You may still see the Dashboard icon in the Dock, but clicking on it should do nothing.
For the next part, you will use the Terminal to disable Spotlight. Open the Terminal and enter the following command.
{color:purple}sudo nano /etc/hostconfig{color}
This will bring up a configuration listing. Use the arrow keys to scroll down and change the value, SPOTLIGHT=-YES-, to SPOTLIGHT=-NO-.
From here, you should press Ctrl+X to exit, upon which it will ask if you want to save. Follow the on screen prompts to save, and exit out of the Terminal. Spotlight will still appear in the corner of your screen, but it won't search for anything. Now on to the next step.
2) For any video URL on YouTube, add &fmt=5 to the end of the URL, and this will force videos to run in quarter VGA mode (320x240). The video quality will be degraded, but you should maintain a stable frame rate that is uninterrupted and capable of streaming without the need to pause and wait for the entire video to load.
This method has worked for me for old and new videos alike. Unfortunately, I have not found a way to make iTunes/Quicktime force videos into a low resolution mode, so this fix will only resolve video playback involving YouTube.
*To restore functionality to Dashboard and Spotlight:*
1) How to Restore the Dashboard
Open the terminal and input the following command
{color:purple}defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO {color}
After entering this command, you will have to restart the Dock. To do so, enter the following command into the terminal
{color:purple}killall Dock{color}
Now, can drag the Dashboard icon back to the Dock, or if you did not remove it to begin with, it should function once again.
2) How to restore Spotlight
Open the terminal and enter the following command
{color:purple}sudo nano /etc/hostconfig{color}
This will open up a config file. Scroll down (using the arrow keys) to the portion that says SPOTLIGHT=-NO- and change the value so that it says SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
Exit the config file by pressing Ctrl+X. Follow the onscreen prompts to save the config file, and you are allset.
Best of luck to you all. I hope that this tutorial has been helpful.

Others have suggested that you may want to tell users how to revert to the original settings.
I'm working on getting this posted as a User Tip. Would you like to add instructions on how to regain Dashboard and Spotlight functionality?
