How to "In Effect" Turn Off Time Zone on iCal AND main computer

I am hopeful that this will help those of us who don't want to have any form of Time Zone on our computers or iCal. I read some of the other posts and see that it does not appear an option to completely turn off all Time Zones on the computer and iCal.
What I am thinking about doing, is trying to "Trick" my computer & ical into thinking it doesn't ever go anywhere and thus leaves all of my appointments where they are - no matter what time zone I am actually in.
I hope those of you more knowledgable can please help me see if this will work, or not?
I am hoping that by leaving Time Zone Support turned "Off" in iCal and leaving my computer at a 'manual' Mountain Time Zone (meaning I don't have it set to have it automatically set to the right time - I will set it manually), my appointments will stay put (not move around 8 hours when I go to Italy &/or back to the US)?
I can set the time "manually" to the correct time when I am in either US or Italy so my computer will reflect the current time, but still be set in Mountain Time Zone? Will the alarms still work on calendar events?
The only drawback I can see so far, is that all of the times on emails are messed up (i.e., off by 8 hours) when I am actually in Italy because I still do have the main computer time zone set as Mountain Time - US.
I am willing to live with this (I think?) if it leaves my appointment times alone.
Someone on a similar thread had wanted iCal to function like a paper planner - that is exactly what I am looking for as well! (it looked like that thread was a bit older, so that's why I posted this new question. It is my first on this type of forum, so forgive me if I am doing something wrong - and please advise! :~)
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I am being driven crazy by, what I suppose to be, the same issue. I have used the Time Zone Support feature to somewhat limited success.
I frequently travel between different time zones am confused on how to set up iCal to show the times of my events *in the place where they occur*. When I am in LA and I have a concert in Chicago later in the week, I don't need to know what time the Chicago concert is in LA.
Syncing my Treo 650 adds another problem. Publishing the calendars adds another as the published times are not listed in the time zone where the events occur but rather what time zone my laptop is in.
This seems simple to me, but I may be missing something. Here are my wishes:
1. As I travel with my MacBook Pro that I can change my Date and Time preference to actually list the time zone where I am. Easily done...but...
2. That the event times in iCal are unaffected by the changing of the Date and Time preference adjustment...(after all the concert in Chicago is still at 3pm on Friday, even if I am in Tokyo on Monday. I need to know the time of the Chicago concert in Chicago time, not Tokyo.)
3. That calendars that I publish list the time in the place where the event occurs. I have students that need to know their lesson times but are consantly confused because the published times reflect whatever time zone I happen to be in...not where the lessons take place.
4. That when I sync my Treo the event times automatically adjust to whichever time zome the treo picks up off the network time server. When I land in a new time zone, I need to know the the rehearsal starts at 10, in the city where I have just arrived.
I have recently switched to the Apple PIM apps from Entourage...where, if I never changed the time zone, everything was fine.
Sorry for the longish cry for help.
Thanks

  • Cannot completely turn off time zone support in the iPhone calendar

In iOS7 it was possible in settings to turn off time zone support in the calendar. (This is not the same as having the date and time of the phone automatically change to current time zone which is generally what one wants and is not affected by calendar time zone support.) The problem in iOS8 is that Time Zone Override is not the same as Time Zone on/off. Here is an an example.
    1) you live in Chicago and central time is your "home" time zone.
    2) you find out about a meeting in New York at 1:00pm next week. You want to add the meeting to your calendar. If you add it at 1:00pm, when you arrive in New York (and change time zones), it will change the meeting time to 2:00pm.
Time Zone Override does not turn off the time zone calendar support. It provides two different views (time in current time zone and time in home tine zone). But time zones are irrelevant when I am scheduling an event at a known time. (Time Zone Override ON seems to work only if you are out of your home time zone and schedule something in your home time zone. But this is almost never what I encounter since I am usually at home, and need to schedule an event outside my home time zone.)

It would seem that way. But with "time zone support" on, you'll simply view your events "as if" you were in a certain time zone.
Example: I create an event in California for 6pm. ( A "California event") If I turn "time zone support" on, and select my time zone as Los Angeles, nothing changes. But if I select Oklahoma city, the time WILL change to 8pm, because it assumes I need to view a "California event" in Central Time.
"Time Zone Support" was created for people that have phone conferences in different time zones. The feature allows one standard time to be used in the calendar, and anyone outside the time zone can use "time zone support" to read it in thier respective time zone.
I'm saying this feature is trying to complicatedly simplify the calendar. I can use the organ between my ears to assume the correct time zone. And having to dig into my preferences in order to view my events correctly is completely insane.
All I want is to create an event, set an alarm, and not have to EVER worry about it changing.
I assumed that turning "time zone support" off would accomplish this as it did in the past. But the calendar STILL REMEMBERS WHERE AN EVENT WAS CREATED. So if the time zone ever changes, it will try to view the event according to the time zone you are currently in.
iCloud does the same thing. When you set your time zone on iCloud, it will view an event according to THAT time zone. If you are in Central time and create an event, your iCloud calendar better be set to Central time or else there will be a descrepancy between your phone calendar and your iCloud calendar.
I just want to turn off "time zone support" COMPLETELY.

  • How do I temporarily turn off my Mac's firewall and/or virus protection so Carbonite can upload my data?

I downloaded Carbonite software to periodically back-up my data.  But my Mac cannot contact the Carbonite server.  I think this is because of my firewall or virus protection.  How can I temporarily turn off my firewall and/or virus protection so Carbonite can upload all the data on my Mac?  How will Carbonite be able to periodically upload my data when my firewall and virus protection are back on?

    Watch out with Carbonite!
I found that it is not able to return many of the database for Apple products are not returned in a usable format.
I highly recommend that if you are going to use Carbonite that you test everything before commiting to it as your backup solution.

  • Turning off Time Zone Support

    Hi,
I have recently moved countries which are 8 hours apart.
I have had Time Zone Support turned on in iCal and my iOS devices. I also use Google Calendars.
If I try to switch time zones, all my appointments move by 8 hours. I don't need to know what the time is in other zones, I suppose what I want is the "floating" time zone.
I have tried to export and reimport my calendars but the time does not change correctly. Do I need to edit the .ics file in some way?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
If you need it I have a script to move all events in a calendar by a number of hours. See the script Offset iCal Events here.
    Best wishes

  • Time Zone Management iCal and iPhone

I have a vacation coming up from California, to paris, to london, to Ireland, to Chicago,to Detroit and finally California. I think that's 5 time zones. I have all of the events schedule in times that would reflect the time zone that I will be in. But there are lots of settings in ical and the iphone (no/yes time zone support, floating time or time zone of the event.
How do you travelers set this stuff up and use it effectively?

A restore of my iphone solved my problem.

  • Is there a way to turn off calendar notifications for ical and outlook when the program is not active?

Hi - i'm finding these to be a little bit annoying, anyone know how to do this?  The Outlook ones bug me more than the iCal ones.  Also, i'm wondering if that is hurting battery life to have that running the background.

I'd install Better Touch Tool (free). Add two gestures for Finder ONLY that have "No action" associated with them. This disbales pinch/zoom on the desktop AND in any Finder window, but not in any other application.
If you'd like to occasionally use pinch to zoom in the Finder (to zoom into a photo thumbnail for example), then add two more gestures, again for Finder ONLY - but this time also selecting one of the modifier keys (e.g. "Option" key). For these gestures set as "Use Apple Default or do nothing".
Together, this enables disabling of the zoom feature (to prevent accidental zooming of the desktop icons for example). But whenever you'd like to zoom into a document or photo etc in a Finder Window (which are also now disabled), you can now simply hold down "Option" key and the Pinch functions work again.
This solution works for me on 10.6.8

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • How change 'home' time-zone in ical?

    Hi
Question ... how to change 'home' time-zone in ical?
I have just relocated countries ... to a different time zone.
I use time-zone support in iCal and add time-zone to various tasks.
But when i add a task and note it as my now current time-zone then ical immediately alters the diary placement to assume that i am in my old country/time-zone.
I have altered the region in Preferences/International but this seems to have no effect, in ical at least.
    guidance welcomed
    ross

In the very upper, right-hand corner of the iCal window is a time zone display, here you can choose to change your iCal time zone.
If you choose "other" from the time zone display's pop-up menu, you get a dialog just like the Date and Time System Preferences.
Why this option is not in the iCal preferences, I have no idea. To me, that would make a lot more sense!

  • How do I permanently turn off fullscreen view in safari?

How do I permanently turn off fullscreen view in Safari?  I never want my menubar to autohide and it has been doing so since the last update.  Once I click on the little blue arrows at the top right of the screen, it is temporarily fixed but then resets to fullscreen when I re-open Safari.

Thaty is quite odd behavior as I have never seen that happen
in any Safari version since full screen was added to OSX.
It almost sounds as if the preference file for Safari may be
corrupted or some other setting file.  However, before messing
with that, export your bookmarks (File->Export Bookmarks...)
so you can retrieve them and under the Safari menu, select reset
Safari.  If this doesn't resolve things, and since you saved your
bookmarks, in Finder hold down Option key and on the Go menu
select library.  In the Preferences folder, find:
    com.apple.Safari.plist
and move it to Desktop or trash it.  Next time Safari opens it
will recreate the file and see if this fixes the issue.

  • Iphone 3gs freezing/screen flashing between password screen and turning off timer. Any ideas what to do please?

can you help please? Phone having funny fit, screen flashing between password screen and turning off timer. Then screens merging.. Yuk!

    Hey kathlovesparis,
First, I would reset the device:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
via: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
And if that doesn't resolve the issue then I would backup the device to iTunes and restore it. Just be cautious and back up first, since restoring deletes all content and settings:

How can I play songs from an album in order on my iphone 4?  The shyuffle is turned off both on the phone and on the device when I sync the phone with my iMac but it continues to shuffle.  All the songs in the album have been checked in iTunes.

Bill, you ignorant moron.  Turn off the ultra secret hidden shuffle diabolically placed behind the album cover.  Just tap the album cover to expose the sinister little shuffle icon on the right.  Is it blue?  Well, tap it until it is no longer blue! Also, make sure you are in your playlist and not the genius playlist.
