How to increase current available to a USB port?

My internal optical drive is not working correctly.  I am trying to install a MavBook Air SuperDrive, and there is not enough current avalable.
How do increase the current or do I find another Drive.

You can't. It's regulated internally by the chips that provide the USB ports. Put an external power brick on the drive or try a different product that supports use of bus power. You can purchase a bare hard drive and a separate enclosure at OWC

  • How "windows-ish" is an iMac's USB port?

    Hi there, Mac-cognoscenti --
I'm interested in getting a GPS. My son-in-law showed me a pretty powerful-appearing one by Garmin. But when I asked him how you go about updating its sw or map info, he said they only support PCs (yeccch) as the platform from which you can do this. Naturally I am hoping that they start supporting Mac access as well, and you can be sure that I'll add my voice to that request as soon as I get one.
I believe that it now uses a USB connection between PC (yecccccccchhhh!) and GPS.
I'm planning on getting an iMac soon, and I understand that it can boot into Windows (yecccchhhhhhhhhh!) as well as MacOSX, and that using Parallels I can even run that other OS (q.v.) inside a Mac window.
I'm not looking fwd to this possibility because that will tempt others in my family to stray back into the Bad Old Ways rather than staying on the good side of He Who Provides lifetime tech support for our home LAN (c'est moi). +(Before the advent of Windoze-compatible Macs, I threw out all our Windoze machines and substituted Macs for them... now life is good for me, the tech support service...)+
Question: If I boot the iMac into Windows and run some sort of browser or FTP SW to glom the GPS updates into its filesystem, can anyone predict whether that OS can address the iMac's USB port(s) such that I can successfully D/L those updates into the GPS?

Hi Dan Kalikow: I have a Garmin C330 GPS, not a top of the line unit, but still a Garmin, so the situation is similar. I have Garmin software installed on my Mac, not windoze software, Mac software, and it works fine. I haven't done any map updates, but have done a Garmin software update. It worked flawlessly, as all of the other Mac related software I have used. Check out the Garmin site for more info: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3499 I hope this helps to keep the family from straying back to the "other side"

  • How much power is required from a USB port?

The 3rd gen Nano manual says that a "high-power USB port" is required (e.g., a un-powered USB hub won't work). If I buy a USB2 cardbus adapter (because my old laptop only has a USB 1 or 1.1 port), how much power is "high-power"?
D-Link sells such an adapter (DUB-C2) that says it has 500 ma per port. Is that enough power to charge Nano?

    100mAmps is low power.
    500mAmps is high power.

  • How Do I know What Type of USB Port I Have?

How can I tell if the USB port on my computer is a USB 2.0 or a USB 1.1?

desktop > right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager
Scroll down to the bottom of the list for USB, it is alphabetical.
Click on the + sign, it will expand the list. My PC has 14.
Click on the first one, it should say Intel something.
    Right-click > Properties > Driver tab
should be version 6 or greater, such as 6.0.0.1011
Click on the last one, it should say USB Root hub
    Right-click > Properties > Driver tab
should be version 5 or greater, such as 5.1.2600.2180
    Post back with any questions.

How do you reset the firewire and USB ports? My ports are intermittent. I suppose it could be a hardware isssue, but still wonder if I can reinstall/reset the software without reformatting my drive.

Hello! Resetting the ports is done by resetting the pmu. press the button once with all external cables unhooked. Below is a pict of an example of the pmu location. Also an intermittent problem is often a bad cable. Tom

  • Is it possible for an external device to burn out the USB port?

I think the available current of the USB port is 500 mA. If a USB device can work with a current of 500mA ~ 600mA, is it possible for it to burn out the USB port with 600mA current (larger than the safe 500mA) when connected? Or the port can never provide a current larger than 500mA?
    Thank you.
P.S. The USB device I worry about is a pair of USB warm slipper (to be worn on feet in cold winter). Its label reads "5V / 2.5W", which should be safe. But I once connected it and a mouse to a USB hub, then to a single MBP USB port, and the mouse stopped working in a few seconds, and came back normal only after I switched it to another port. Now the slipper is connected to a port by itself, but I am just afraid that the USB slipper can go malfunctioning all of a sudden and drain a lot of current to burn the USB port.

...But I once connected it and a mouse to a USB hub, then to a single MBP USB port, and the mouse stopped working in a few seconds, and came back normal only after I switched it to another port....
Likely the hub is only barely able to handle the 500mA requirement.  Many powered USB hubs have "cheap" power adapters and can't handle any high surge situations.  Many devices like heating elements and motors have "surge currents" where the initial powering on of the device has a much larger current flow than during normal usage.  Think of it like riding a bicycle.  You have to push hard on the pedals to start off, but it's easier to pedal after the bike is moving.
...Now the slipper is connected to a port by itself...
If you mean the device is plugged into the Mac's USB port, then you should know that all Macs for the past few years provide more than the 500mA minimum for USB.  Some other computers also provide higher power.  But most USB hubs I've seen were limited to 500mA.
If you are plugged into the hub, not the Mac, then the power adapter for your hub may be barely adequate or possibly even defective.
...but I am just afraid that the USB slipper can go malfunctioning all of a sudden and drain a lot of current to burn the USB port.
IMHO, I would stop using the heater with any computer USB port.  There is always the possibility that eventually something could short out in the heating element and cause a catestrophic surge through the USB port.  The electronics in computers are quite delicate and I'd be paranoid about the device damaging my computer.  (BTW, I have an electrical engineering background so I'm paranoid about power issues all the time anyway. )  Even if the heater is plugged into a hub, the surge current could damage the other devices plugged into the hub.  While not as catastrophic as a dead computer, I'd still be irked to have to replace my mouse, digital camera, printer, webcam, etc.
Instead, I recommend plugging the heater into it's own "power adapter."  One of those that give a USB port to charge a cellphone or whatever.  Plug the power adapter into a power strip.  Place the power strip in the floor next to the slippers.  That way you can conviniently turn the strip on and off with your toes as you're putting on your slippers.

  • Pick Data From Serial/USB ports

How can I pick Data from Serial/USB ports Machines
I want to put Results into Database from Haematology Machine

You will have to write a Java program to do this and then use a Java Pluggin Commponent (JPC) to read the data into Forms.
Look on the Internet for code showing how to work with USB ports, and see Francois web site about PJCs.

  • In Phone USB Port Drivers

Does anyone know how to reapir or re-install the USB port driver on the device itself? I was talking with a friend and based on the info and problem I have been having with my device (windows detects and shows the device as malfunctioning), it appears that these drivers are either possibly corrupt or have been lost. Either through a virus or bad software that doesn't work with the phone. It would mean the world if I could get a link to download these and try it. The bluetooth works fine. But I cannot update to firmware 3 until the USB is working.

One thing you can try is to delete the USB devices on your PC.
Depending on which version of windows you are running this would be done differently.
In XP you go to Control Panel->System->Hardware then Device Manager. Under "Universal Serial Bus" or other sub categories you may see a yellow question mark or a red exclamation mark next to a USB device, select it and hit Remove (Delete) select YES to remove the device. Now try to connect again the phone to see if it's recognized.
I had a few instances where once the computer creates a corrupted device it won't try to re-install the device but it recognizes the device as being the same and just sits there.
Be warned that I'm not liable if you delete something else or you damage your PC. Follow these instructions only if you know how to do these system settings in your PC.
    You have been warned!

If you are having problems with USB ports, read this topic.
That gives you a good idea of whaty not to hook up. Otherwise the rest of the pinout should be in your manual.

  • Which USB port is my device plugged into?

My application program needs to read a USB joystick on a Solaris 8 system.
How can my program find out which usb port it is using other than:
       system("ls -l /dev/usb | awk '$0~""input""{print$9}' > file")and then reading that file? Thank you.

    Hello.
If the "system" variant provides the information you need I would use the "readdir" functions (opendir, readdir, closedir; see manpages) to read out the directory contents of /dev/usb. This is way more efficient than starting multiple processes (ls and awk).
To get extended information (information you get by the "-l" argument of "ls" ) call stat() for each file.

  • HT1151 replace broken usb port

My USB port broke when i put in a new PNY 8 GB drive into the Macbook Air's right USB drive. I looked and saw a broken connector inside (1 of 4). How can I purchased and replace this USB port. Maybe a 3.0 USB?

"If I am correct, the port is an integral part of the logic board."
Maybe not.  Check http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Air.  The OP should select his/her MBA model and look for the Port Hatch Assembly or I/O Board.
