That determines whether dedicated or shared server sessions on the Oracle server can be used. Shared server scales a lot better than dedicated servers, but requires specific factors to be taken into consideration (e.g. the move of session UGA from the PGA to the SGA, dispatchers required, etc).
For what server o/s? Windows deal differently with dedicated and shared servers (threads) as Unix/Linux (processes) do.
And why the increase in connections required by your team? Are they using the Oracle server architecture correctly from the client side?
Most 64bit Oracle severs can easily support 1000's of connections (shared server) - but the number of connections are secondary to how the clients are using their Oracle sessions.

• How to increase Memory and Java Heap Size for Content Server

Hi,
My content server is processing requests very slowly. Over performance is not good. I have 2 GB of RAM any idea what files I can modify to increase the Java Heap Size for the Content Server. If I increase the RAM to 4 or 6 GB where do I need to make changes for the Java Heap Size and what are the recommended values. I just have Content Server Running on the linux box. Or how do I assign more memory to the user that owns the content server install.
Thanks

• How can I capture and re-present Oracle contraint/check/DML errors?

Hi,
New to APEX, I have a Designer/Web-PLSQL background.
In Designer I can define the messages that I want the user to see when check, constraint, etc. errors are generated by the application interaction with the database server (done through table API and the integration of the Designer generated screens).
In APEX, these types of errors all seem to show the default 'ORA' style message on an error page. How can I change these to 'human-readable' messages?
I'm obviously missing the trick that changes an ORA-0001 message referring to CUST_CODE_UK to something like 'This Code has already been assigned to another customer'? I want to use standard functionality, not really keen on creating my own DML packages for every table that needs to be accessed through a screen.

I have installed Oracle Linux Release 4 Update 8 for x86 (32 Bit) - DVD V16749-01 on vmaware for running oracle database 10g xe on my laptop. But its screen resolution is not greater than 800x600, (800x600 very small for my laptop which have 1366x768 screen resolution). Please provide any plugin or software that can increase the resolution of oracle linux 4 in vmare.

• How to find version and arch of Oracle client installed

Hi all
I have sles 10 sp2 x86_64 on which oracle client 10.2 is installed. this installation was not done by me!
so i dont know what version/architecture (32/64 bit) mode of the oracle client is installed on the client.
from sqlplus -V i get only the version which is installed and not whether it is 32 or 64 bit. how can i find that out.
sqlplus -V
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
with a bit of googling i found only the below link which says 10g client 32-bit cannot be installed on a 64 bit system.
i read this Installing 32-bit RDBMS Client software on x86_64 Linux. [ID 1075717.1]
Installing 32-bit RDBMS Client software on x86_64 Linux.
The only release of 32-bit RDBMS Client software that will properly install on an x86_64 Linux OS system is 11gR2 (aka 11.2.0.x)
* 9iR2 (aka 9.2.0.x) 32-bit RDBMS Client software will NOT install on any x86_64 Linux OS system.
* 10gR1 (aka 10.1.0.x) 32-bit RDBMS Client software will NOT install on any x86_64 Linux OS system.
* 10gR2 (aka 10.2.0.x) 32-bit RDBMS Client software will NOT install on any x86_64 Linux OS system.
* 11gR1 (aka 11.1.0.x) 32-bit RDBMS Client software will NOT install on any x86_64 Linux OS system.
The answer to "why", is that the 11gR2 Client software is the first version that includes syntax so that a 32-bit object is linked.can someone please throw more light on this?

If you have "64bit" string in V$VERSION it means Oracle 64bit is running.
SQL> select * from v$version;
BANNER

PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production

TNS for Linux: Version 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.4.0 - ProductionIf you have no "64bit" string in V$VERSION it means Oracle 32bit is running.

Hi,
You can find many articles on oracle site for this subject.
However in brief following are the steps
1) Create a directory source,executables,images,reports and logfiles.
2) Copy all your forms, menus and pll's in source directory
3) All your images in your image directory
4) All your reports in reports directory
5) All yuor fmx,mmx and plx in executables directory
6) Any log files in logfiles directory
7) Add path of images and executables directory in FORMS_PATH in default.env
8) Configure your formsweb.cfg as your need.
9) Configure report.conf and rwservlet.properties according to your applications.
10) Make jar of icons say myicons.jar.
11) copy myicons.jar in forms/java directory
12) Check yuor form services if they are running or not.
13) Invoke the URL in internet explorer
http://<ip_address>:<port_no>/forms/frmservlet?form=testform.fmx
I think that's enough from my side.. For more info you can go through the documentation.

• How to increase the buffer size for Oracle?

After I installed the patch 9.2.0.4, I kept getting 'ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel' error. According to the metalink, increasing the buffer size may solve this problem. I found when I set the trace on, this problem was gone, and after I set the trace off, it came back again. I am not sure if setting the trace on increases buffer size automatically or not, but I want to start from here.
No matter how easy it is, I really didn't change buffer size before, can anyone show me how to do that?
Thanks a lot.

Hi,
I think they asked to increase the db buffer cache size. You may try this
alter system set db_cache_size=<new size in bytes> scope=both;
Cheers

• How to increase Keepalive and TcpMaxDataRetransmissions to solve intermitte

Hi experts,
I encountered an intermittent link down issue on our production system for a long time. I escalated to Cisco TAC but the problem is too difficult to resolve(no errors in Cisco Nexus 5010). We built a very solid HA in network(4 * 10GBE teaming), 2 Cisco Nexus 5010 for HA. However, intermittent link down occurred from time to time. By the way, chimney offload is disabled recently but the problem persists. We run SQL server 2008 R2 CU7 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. The NICs are HP/Emulex NC550SFP 10GBE.
I think this problem can't be solved by Cisco so I want to increase Keepalive from 30,000 to 300,000 on DB server and TcpMaxDataRetransmissions from 5 to 120 on DB/APP servers.(according to this link: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dataaccesstechnologies/archive/2010/06/18/using-network-trace-to-troubleshoot-intermittent-connectivity-issues.aspx ) However, I test these settings in testing environment and run a query in query analyzer and I found it does not work. Query analyzer terminated a query within 5 seconds if I unplug the cable. What's wrong with that?

Hi Dennis,
Keepalive property is a new stuff set on SQL server configuration manager from SQL 2005.
This parameter controls how often TCP attempts to verify that an idle connection is still intact by sending a keep alive packet to its peer. If the remote system is still reachable and functioning, a acknowledge packet is sent back. Otherwise, the local TCP will keep sending u201CKeep Aliveu201D packet in an interval of KeepAliveInterval for TcpMaxDataRetransmissions times. If no acknowledge packet is received during this period, the local TCP will reset the connection. For every SQL Server TCP connections.
To cut it short , for an idle connection once in every 30000 milli sec a check is sent to the client and check whether the client is available . If yes , the connection is maintained else the conenction is killed / reset.
Based on this you and your manager can decide whether or not this property is to be set on .
To play around with this property you can do it from here
SQL Server Configuration Manager -> SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration ->Protocols -> TCP/IP, you will notice the newly added property u201CKeep Aliveu201D.
if you have SQL server 2008, it is under SQL Native Client > Client Protocols > TCP/IP
Additionally you can have a look into a older blog
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2006/03/09/546852.aspx
Hope this helps.

• How to increase min and max range of resulting XML report output?

Hi,
I'm trying to massage search results into a digestible format using XSLT. Its relatively straigh-forward. But what I'd like is to be able to increase the character result range to capture hopefully more parts to a URL - if that's our current search result.
Here's an existing report XML node containing the min/max attributes I'm trying to adjust:
<mm_reportitem>
<mm_file>link_report_210611\poc_home_2011\home_200.html</mm_file>
<mm_displaystr>...template 'tracking' tools are located in the {a href="http://subdomainname.domainname.net.nz/files/index....</mm_displaystr>
<mm_data mm_rangemin="3197" mm_rangemax="3210" mm_filename="Z:\projects\clinetname\link_report_210611\poc_home_2011\home_200.html" mm_replaced="false" mm_matchedtextdirty="false" />
</mm_reportitem>
I basically want to try and capture reasonably long URL strings (in green) by, hopefully, adjusting the ranges (in red).
Any ideas?
EDIT: Ok, the colours were stripped out when I posted, so basically I want the CDATA node text in "mm_display_str" to be longer to capture an entire, possibly lengthy URL.
EDIT: Best file I can find so far is: C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS5\en_US\Configuration\Menus\Cache\Menus\DWSiteReportsTab.xml -- but it doesn't look like it contains anything like range values, or in fact any numeric values to adjust.

Hi Don,
Are you trying to mean, I need to apply this logic to get min(result_no):
Ex :
min(cast(order_date as date) by patient_id) = order_date then result_no.
Thanks,
Karthikeyan V

• How to install GCC and DKMS on Oracle Linux?

Hello,
I am a newbie to Oracle Linux. I installed Oracle Linux on a virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox. Now I need to install the packages DKMS and GCC in order to share drives between the host and the ghost.
Here is what is happening:
# yum install dkms
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
No Repositories Available to Set Up
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing paskage install arguments
No Match for afgument: dkms
Nothing to do
Please, advice what to do.
Thanks in advance.

Here is what you need to install under Oracle Linux or Red Hat Enterprise Linux to install the VirtualBox Guest Additions:

yum -y install gcc kernel-uek-devel-$(uname -r)

The packages are available from the Oracle public yum repository as already mentioned, or on the installation DVD in the server directory.

• How to connect table and access or oracle table?

so many question at a time . yes but pls hlp me to learn how to create a table that 'll connect to some database.

You need to use JDBC to access the database, a TableModel to contain the memory image of the data and a JTable to display it. You can derive your TableModel from the DefaultTableModel class. There is a tutorial on JTable use that builds a Stock Quote table that fetches its data from a database in
