How to increase Serial ATA

Hi.
I'm wondering the best way to upgrade the capacity of my Serial ATA. I currently have the standard Hitachi HTS723232L9SA62 with 320.07 GB capacity. I have used all of this capacity and not sure how to increase the capacity. I continuously get messages telling me that my start up disk is full. I have deleted as much information as i can so i think memory upgrade is the best solution (already have an external time capsule). I don't really know a lot about computers so an easy memory installation is preferable. Im looking to increase my memory to about 600GB to 1TB worth of capacity. What is the best Serial ATA that will do what I want it to do? (prefer to buy from the Apple store but either way is ok)
Thanks for all your help.

Hi smonty, not sure which part of Australia you are in, but our nearest equivalent to "MacSales" (as recommended by Kappy and many others for US purchases) for on line purchase is probably "MacFixit". They stock much the same sort of range. see http://www.macfixit.com.au/shop/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=115 for some of their hard drives.
Another good source is "Palaeographics" whose "on line" store goes by the name of "buymac" - see http://www.buymac.com.au/store/computer-addons/hard-drives-and-storage/internal- hard-drives/25-sata-hard-drives for appropriate drives, though I'd personally be wary of the Samsung models mentioned there.
To transfer your files to the new drive you are really going to need to buy an external enclosure as well to put the old drive in after installing the new one.
Cheers

  • Increase Serial ATA

The serial ATA on my Pro 2009 is 3 Gigabit.
How can I increase it to 6 Gigabit?

If you put the SSD in the optical bay; if you are satisfied, if your SSD is 3G model... and forget any PCIe 6G card that isn't at least 4x unless you are only going to put one SSD on it, or 500MB/sec.

  • How fast is Serial ATA?

How fast is the Serial ATA interface? Also how fast is the old IDE interface?
    --Cheers

You can run three SATA drives off an SATA 2 (300MB or 3Gbps) interface, much as running multiple SCSI drives on one channel, if you have a Port Multiplier capable controller, letting you easily build 4 x 3 drives on a 4-channel card.
WD Raptor 10K 150GB - look up reviews and specs, but writes are ~90MB/sec "real world" and excellent for scratch, boot drive, for those systems that it can be used in (PCIe Dual Core or controller).

    hi, i have the
Msi K8N Neo Platinum and i despertly tried to boot from the Serial ATA drive.
i have 2 hd in the IDE primary channels

the Serial ATA is connected to 3 port due to overclocking and msi detecting bug.
the Serial ATA is NTFS and so the Primary Master.
i want to install WINXP on the Serial ATA and so it will boot from it.
i am using the reguler Primary Master for the boot now,, but i really want to boot from the Serial ATA,,
and plz explain me what the hell are those Raid SATA, and all the other types
    PATA and stuff.
and do i need to use the driver RAID/SATA diskett from msi?

Does the same hold true with Windows 2000?  No need to F6 and add drivers for a single SATA (WD Raptor 36GB) drive?
I am having a devil of a time getting my K8N Neo Plat seeing this single drive, and shall try the tricks in the FAQ thread: Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
I cannot even format the SATA drive in the MSI - the system locks up, aborts, or I see ASCII characters in the screen after "format terminated" messages.  Drive formats fine in my Asus P4P800-E Deluxe.

  • How to install a Serial ATA Drive?

Hello, I just purchased a Barracuda Serial ATA drive and I just found out that these aren't installed as P ATA drives.
I've tried several combinations on my award BIOS and still I have absolutlly no sign of the SATA drive's presence.
This was the  Beginning of the discussion.
I have no ideia what to do. I've heard of the F6 tecnique but I don't no have a disk drive nor am I installing windows XP. I believe that my controler is called ICH5 or 82801EB since these where the types of refence I've heard before and I checked my devices on Device Manager.
    P.S I'm using windows XP

You don't need to install drivers.
In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
If this doesn't let you boot, change to
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
After making/saving these changes you should go back into the bios on the first reboot and make sure the right boot drive is selected.

  • Serial ata sata hard drive

    Hi members
I have a msi k8mm3 motherboard and want to connect a serial sata raid hd. but when i press tab to go into sata bios a get error message saying you need 2 hd to setup can some one tell me how to set up a diamond max 7L300RO serial ata sata raid and what the error meam.robin

You need the same size and preferably brand/model to make a RAID 0 or 1
With raid-0 you can, in theory, increase read/write performance. If one drive goes bad, you lose all data on both disks (half of the data is written to one disk, half to the other at the same time, that's why the performance comes from). In daily life, you won't notice that much of an increase, unless you work with many large files (video editing).
With Raid-1, you continuously make a copy of the disk you work from. In Windows you will only "see" one of both disks. The RAID controller sees to it that the data you write, is written to both disks, so if one goes bad, you can continue working from the other.
If you want to use only one SATA disk, you can. Set it to IDE in your bios or disable SATA RAID.
You can find the how-to in your board's manual.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Serial ATA Drive

I've got a very strange problem....
Yesterday i have installed my new motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR) but i have a problem with the SATA feature.
I've got two drives : one 40GB ATA (Western Digital) and one 160GB SATA also from Western Digital.
My SATA drive is recognized by the FastTrak BIOS (v2) but i'm unable to reinstall Windows XP Professional (with SP2 Slipstreamed) because Windows Setup didn't recognize the SATA disk. I have loaded the Promise Serial ATA Drivers at the begin of the installation (F6)...
I have also tried 2 different versions of the Promise SATA Drivers; the one that cames with my motherboard CD, and the most recent from the MSI website. But with both drivers the same result. How can i get my Serial ATA Harddisk get work with this motherboard?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Computerfreakje.
PS : My specifications are the following:
MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR (Rev. 7.4)
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
    2x 256MB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb (R360)
    Western Digital 40GB ATA
    Western Digital 160GB SATA

    Thanks for your reply Richard,
My motherboard didn't came with a floppy (I have bought an bulk version..) I have created a SATA floppy by myself. (I have got the drivers from the motherboard cd..) These drivers are also good, right?
Which type of RAID Array should i create? Because i have only one SATA drive.....
I think the "auto" feature is the easiest way?
    Thanks.
    Computerfreakje.

  • Error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices.

There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices. I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this. I believe a secondary drive in bay 2 died.

I also have just began to hit this issue.
I have 4 2T enterprise class WD drives in a raid 1+0 (or was it 0+1) config.
    Device Model: WDC WD2002FYPS-01U1B1
One disk (disk0 in bay 2) keeps disappearing. Completely. /dev/disk0 and /dev/rdisk0 vanish.
If I look at "about this mac" / "More Info" / "Serial-ATA" I get the "error while scanning ...".
If I reboot, the offending disc comes back and the raid volumes start rebuilding.
The SMART status is (reported to be) fine.
I use the 'smartmon' tools and look at the extended SMART status and the values of the counters all looks the same as the other drives. I can run an extended offline test, which takes forever to execute. disk 1 and 3 eventually finish with success (it writes this status into a SMART log area on the disc).
Disk 2 and 0 take longer. I image this is because 2 is being read to resilver 0. Currently, I am running with disk0 absent again, and disk 2s test did not complete. It claims it was aborted by the host, so I imagine the one on disk0 will claim the same after I reboot.
My system is under extended AppleCare until 16 Jan 2011, so if I can determine that this is a disc controller error, I can get it fixed. The drives have a 5 year warrantee, and are less than 1yr old, so they are covered. I just need to figure out what the issue is.
I will now reboot and recover disk0 and see if perhaps there is anything recorded in the SMART log.
There is nothing in kernel.log specific to disk0. I include the log extract here for posterity. The "speed" volume is not raid 0+1, just striped, which is why it gets aborted.

Oracle does not recommend using the SORT_AREA_SIZE parameter unless the instance is configured with the shared server option. Oracle recommends that you enable automatic sizing of SQL working areas by setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET instead. SORT_AREA_SIZE is retained for backward compatibility."
--How can i know the instance is configured with the shared server option or not? This might be a tough question to answer. A shared server configuration may be enabled, but the clients may still connect using dedicated sessions, in which case PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET would still apply.
    From
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/dynviews_2088.htm
V$SESSION includes a column named SERVER which will contain one of the following for each of the sessions: DEDICATED, SHARED, PSEUDO, or NONE. As a quick check, you could query V$SESSION to see if any sessions are connected using a shared server connection.
    From:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/manproc.htm
There are several parameters which are used to configure shared server support, as well as several views to monitor shared server.
As Robert mentioned, when the WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY is set to AUTO, the SORT_AREA_SIZE setting is not used, unless a shared server configuration is in use.

    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams157.htm
"Setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET to a nonzero value has the effect of automatically setting the WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY parameter to AUTO. This means that SQL working areas used by memory-intensive SQL operators (such as sort, group-by, hash-join, bitmap merge, and bitmap create) will be automatically sized. A nonzero value for this parameter is the default since, unless you specify otherwise, Oracle sets it to 20% of the SGA or 10 MB, whichever is greater."
Actually I am facing performence issue since long time till now i did not get the solution even i have raised SRs but i could not. When the issue occur system seems hang.what i monitored whenever hdisk0 and hdisk1 use 100% the issue occur.
    Regards,
SajidWhen you say that you have had a performance issue for a long time, is it a performance problem faced by a single SQL statement, a single user, a single application, or everything on the server? If you are able to identify a single user, or SQL statement that is experiencing poor performance, I suggest starting with a 10046 trace at level 8 (wait events) or level 12 (wait events and bind variables) to determine why the execution appears to be slow. If you have not yet determined a specific user or SQL statement that is experiencing performance problems, you might start with either a Statspack Report or an AWR Report (AWR requires a separate license).
If you believe that temp tablespace usage may be a contributing factor to the performance problem, you may want to periodically run this query, which will indicate currently in use temp tablespace usage:
    {code}
    SELECT /*+ ORDERED */
    TU.USERNAME,
    S.SID,
    S.SERIAL#,
    S.SQL_ID,
    S.SQL_ADDRESS,
    TU.SEGTYPE,
    TU.EXTENTS,
    TU.BLOCKS,
    SQL.SQL_TEXT
    FROM
    V$TEMPSEG_USAGE TU,
    V$SESSION S,
    V$SQL SQL
    WHERE
    TU.SESSION_ADDR=S.SADDR
    AND TU.SESSION_NUM=S.SERIAL#
    AND S.SQL_ID=SQL.SQL_ID
    AND S.SQL_ADDRESS=SQL.ADDRESS;
    {code}
The SID and SERIAL# returned by the above could then be used to enable a 10046 trace for a session. The SQL_ID (and CHILD_NUMBER from V$SESSION in recent releases) could be used with DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR to return the execution plan for the SQL statement.
You could also take a look in V$SQL_WORKAREA_ACTIVE to determine which, if any, SQL statement are resulting in single-pass, or multi-pass executions, which both access the temp tablespace.

    Kasi Chukka

    Hi Kasi,
Your question is not very clear, from the looks of it, the load on your client's system will be doubling soon.
You need to look at the system stats on how the system is handling the current load, use transactions ST06, ST04 and ST02 to check if the DB hit ratios are as expected, the cpu idle time, the busy periods. Identify if there is large amounts of paging on the server(candidate for increase in real memory).
On AIX level, you will need to look at CPU / Memory usage.
On SAP Application server, you need to look at SAP Buffers.
On Oracle end, look at SGA stats, if it need to increase, the data growth that is current and estimated growth (DB02).
You will not get an exact answer to it, you will need to analyze the existing load and then estimate (guess). The hardware upgrade will also depend on what the client is willing to spend, its always a good practise to add 20% to what you have estimated as these figures are never accurate.
    All the best.
    Cheers,
    Nisch

  • Macbook pro having serial-ATA issues

I was working on a project in xcode that an error poped saying it can't save the file, after that mac os just hanged, so I restarted it, but it couldn't get pass the apple logo, so I booted the recovery partition and tried the disk utility and it said there was a problem with the startup partition, so I tried the repair volume, but it didn't work, saying there was a write problem, so I tried to reformat it and then restore it to time machine backup, but it didn't work, so I removed the hard from my laptop and used a sata to usb enclosure and insert it to another mac and I formated the hard and reinstalled mac on it. when the hard is connected to usb I can boot from it and use it, but when I put it in the macbook it just can't boot from it. I figure there's a write problem with the serial-ATA. I live in a country, that doesn't have an apple store, so I want to fix this myself if I can, so please if anybody knows how to fix this please help.

Ok, I will try it tomorrow and see if it will fix it.
    thanks for the tip.

  • My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

  • Speed of SSD vs 5400 rpm Serial ATA

On the online Apple store the difference between SSD hard drives and the 5400 rpm Serial ATA drive is said to be in durability. How does the speed of the two kinds of drives compare? I know that 7200 rpm is preferred for video editing because the drive can be read faster. Is there any difference in how fast a 5400 rpm drive and an SSD drive can be read? Apple does not mention this on their website, which I think they would do if the SSD drive was faster (which is why I ask).

    That's actually barefeats.com.
SSDs are in their infancy, and there's a huge range of speeds among the many currently available models. All of them will probably be faster for all purposes than a 5400RPM hard drive, but some are slower in some uses than a 7200RPM hard drive. The fastest and most expensive ones are several times faster than any hard drive in most operations, and somewhat faster than hard drives even in the operations that SSDs perform most slowly. If you are thinking of buying a SSD, I recommend waiting a year: prices then will be half what they are now, and speeds will be uniformly higher, expecially among lower-priced SSDs.
