How to initialize the new internal hard disk in LapTop ?

Folks,
Hello.
My LapTop model is HP Pavilion dv4-2045dx entertainment notebook whose host operating system is Windows 7.
Because the current hard disk capacity is not enough, I need to replace it with a new hard disk with bigger capacity.
After take out the old hard disk and install "750 GB 7200 rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black 9 mm internal hard drive" into my LapTop, how to initialize the new hard disk ? What is the host Operating System for the new hard disk ?

Please see the answer in your other thread.
Which external hard drive supports Oracle Linux 5 on top of VMPlayer ?

Hi, I just put a new internal hard disk to my MacBook after formattimg it and I don't know how to install the OS X? Any help please

Be sure you have prepared the new drive correctly:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?

How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?
The music I want to move was in iTunes but is now just files. I had to reinstall a new iTunes and lost all my old music.
    Thank you!

That article is about using your iPod as an external hard drive, to move files from one computer to another computer.  It is not related to your question.
You can't use iTunes to move song files from iPod to computer, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can move song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your current computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library by dragging the files (or folder containing the files) to the iTunes window.  After confirming everything is there (and fixing the data issue you mentioned) you can sync the iPod.  You may want to do a Restore on the iPod, if it might have a data corruption issue, which will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install the latest software, and set it to defautl settings.

  • The new LaCie Hard Disk,by Neil Poulton Fried my firewire on macbook

Does anyone has any suggestion for more reputable brand name fire wire external drives?
The new LaCie Hard Disk,by Neil Poulton Fried the fire wire port on the Logic Board on My Macbook the other day.
Just so you know I received the drive brand new. I already had an older Lacie external hard drive mounted on the Macbook, when I attached the ne *Lacie Hard Disk,by Neil Poulton*; It mounted for a brief second and caused the old Lacie external hard drive to unmount from the system. The *Lacie Hard Disk,by Neil Poulton* damaged my old Lacie drive too In the process.
It did not take long before the new drive got unmounted too. No matter what I do I could not get any of the external drive to work on the Macbook.
I called Lacie support. They claimed It was not anything major just zapp the ram, repair permission, and turn off computer unplug the power take out the battery start the computer over.
I had already done of that with no success. Lacies support still insist It was not their drive rather than the system.
My mac Is 1 1/2 year old. I don' t have the Applecare coverage. I took the Macbook to the store. They tested and they decided that the firewire was fried on the Logic Board and had to be replaced for $350 and normally should have charged me $800 for a Logic Board replacement.
Now I have to spend $350 extra for repair after buying a $150 dollar *Hard Disk,by Neil Poulton*.
Lacie told me that even after my ordeal they were not liable for any damages.
My loyalty to Lacie Is shattered. I lost confidence In Lacie and would never buy another Lacie external drive again.
From now on I will only buy from Western Digital, Seagate, and G-tecnology, Inc.
By being prudent It caused me more damage by buying another backup drive.
I believe that Lacie released this try without enough testing In the lab and used me as their guinea pig to test their product. As a paying customer It Is unfair for Lacie to use such practice.

This thread is not being very fair.
I just bought a 1TB LaCie drive for my MacBook, and it works great. They are a reputable and experienced vendor overall. I am sorry if your Mac got damaged, but posting such major allegations against LaCie when you don't really have any proof it is their fault could potentially have some consequences for you. Frying a Firewire port just by plugging in a compatible peripheral is almost unheard of.

  • I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. How do I do a backup on the new internal hard drive using my existing LaCie external drive without re backing up the entire internal drive. Just want to backup most recent changes

I have a mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro. The existing internal drive was about to fail so I had it replaced with a 500GB western digital drive. I have been backing up my system with a LaCie 500GB external drive. I want to perform a new backup using Time Machine but I only want to backup any changes from the last 30 days or so. I want to avoid doing a total system backup thus duplicating most of the data on my external drive and pretty much filling it up. Any suggestions appreciated

Look at this web site devoted to Time Machine:

I tried the test hard hisk but its say Boot device not found or hard disk not exsit. how much is this hard disk cost?
    Thanks

Yes, at least for your laptop and most others, they are industry standard hard drives. You do not need an "HP" hard drive and, in fact, HP does not make hard drives. You can use any drive at all that is 2.5 inches wide, 9.5 mm thick and is a SATA hard drive. This one would work fine:

  • How to find the no. of hard-disk present in the computer by simple java prg

    Hi All !!!
I want to find no. of hard-disk present in my computer by JAVA program.so if someone has already done this, plz tell me the Class and method by which i could do this.
    Thanks and Regards
    Allwyn

I don't think it's possible using the standard java API - ie you will need
    some native code to help.
But File does offer listRoots(). On a Windows machine this will (often)
return "drives" (letters associated with local disk partitions, or mapped
to network resources). This may be enough for what you want.
    File is here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/io/File.html

  • Portege R600-101 - New internal Hard disk

Hello, is there a way to change the internal hard drive of the R600 (to a 500GB or a bigger one)?
    Andreas

    Hi ankoe,
Generally speaking a HDD upgrade to higher capacity on SATA interface is no problem since there is no capacity limit anymore. That means you could buy every HDD but of course, depending on the HDD size (2.5 or 1.8).
    Which drive is currently installed?
If you look for a HDD (not SSD), I can recommend Western Digital. They make good HDDs, Im satisfied. :)

  • How does one SUCCESSFULLY transfer Time-Machine backup to a new (larger) hard disk drive using OSX 10.5.8

I have read a number of articles about how to transfer a complete Time-Machine backup to a new (larger) hard disk-drive.  Some of these articles are specifically for OSX10.6 users, which are not applicable to me since I am operating with OSX 10.5.8.
However, I have tried several times to use the Disk Utility 'Restore' function, dragging my old time-machine volume into the 'Source:' box and my new volume into the 'Destination:' box.  This works, of sorts, BUT the newly created volume on the new larger hard disk-drive remains the same size as the original volume on the old Time-Machine HDD, with no apparent way of increasing the new volume's size.  So I am not really any better off:
E.g. the total capacity of my new HDD is stated by 'Disk Utility' to be 465.8 GB, of which I'm told 228.2 GB is used for the Backups.backdb folder, but only 4.6 GB of free space is actually available.  Yet under the 'Partition' tab of 'Disk Utility' it tells me that there is still 236.4 GB of available space.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue without upgrading to OSX 10.6?

First, how did you prepare your new drive?  See:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.  If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc.
If you plan to partition this new drive then be sure you create a larger partition for TM than your old volume.
Next, clone your old TM volume:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • How do I backup to time machine with a new internal hard drive?

My Macbook Pro's hard drive got corrupted about a year ago so I had to get the hard drive completely replaced. However, I wanted to start backing up my data to time machine so if the same situation were to reoccur, I would be better prepared. For some reason Time Machine does not recognize the new internal hard drive of the computer as it is supposed to. Could someone please help? thank you in advanced
    Current OS: OS X 10.8.4

That error message is saying that it is attempting to setup a Time Capsule for Time Machine to backup your data on.
Do you have a Time Capsule?
Do you have an external Disk Drive?
You can do a backup to the internal disk drive. It is worthless to do that.

  • Unable to erase internal hard disk

    Dear Mac Book Users
To begin with I got a problem of spinning wheel and grey screen, upon extensive research online i could,nt find any solution and everytime i tried to repair it with disk utility's first aid otion i got the following error:
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
There were a lot of errors wth permissions (upon clicking verify permissions) but the repair permissions button was greyed out.
Now all that is history and finally the only solution to get rid of the above problem was to back up my data to an external hd (WD-My passport) using the Restore option in disk utility. That worked well and all my data, the whole volume named MACINTOSH HD was copied to external hd and alsi now I am able to boot with this external hd.
Now the problem is that when i go to disk utility and try to erase the original internal hard disk details of which are as follows:
    Disk Description :
    ST9160314ASG Media
    Total Capacity :
    160.04 GB (1,60,04,18,85,696 Bytes)
    Connection Bus :
    SATA
    Write Status :
    Read/Write
    Connection Type :
    Internal
    S.M.A.R.T. Status :
    Not Supported
    Partition Map Scheme :
    GUID Partition Table
    I get the error:
Volume Erase failed with the error:
    File system formatter failed.
I want to know that has my hard disk crashed and if yes how to confirm it?
Also if it has crashed, now can i get a new hard disk with a greater capacity (let me know the maximum capacity) than my original 160gb. Are there any things i should keep in mind while buying a new one?

    Please check the results:

  • Installing Leopard and new internal hard drive at same time, best plan?

Ok so basically the title explains what I need to do. I am currently travelling in Europe, and returning home to New York on Tuesday night. I have a new hitachi 250gb HD and will have Leopard waiting for me at home when I arrive, and will get right to doing this installation. I am writing on the discussion boards here because I am hoping the users here can give me their opinions on what is the best plan of action to do this whole install?
So what I was thinking was, I should remove the hard drive that's already inside, put it into an external enclosure. Then, put my new blank 250gb hard drive into the macbook pro, close up the computer, then put the Leopard OSX install disk, and do a completely fresh install of Leopard. Then, after installing (or during installing?) I should run the migration assistant program to get all my files and settings etc. transferred over to the new internal hard drive with Leopard on it, from the old hard drive that will be plugged in from an enclosure as an external drive.
Will this plan have any problems that I am not aware of? Is there a better process for doing this task? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I am anxious to get my new hard drive into the computer because my 160gb is filling up, and dying so badly to use the new Leopard!!

You could also put the new disk in the external enclosure, partition it using disk utility. Then make a clone of your current hard disk to the new external one using the restore feature in disk utility. Boot from the external disk and Install Leopard as an upgrade keeping all your files and setting. check everything is all running how I should and swap drives over. That's another option for you.

  • Dual G5 hangs while booting from internal hard-disk

    Hi,
When I switched my Dual G5 (2x2.5GHz around 15 months old, 1.5GB ram, 160GB hard disk, OS 10.4.6) on yesterday, it wouldn't boot from the internal hard disk. The spinning "wheel" (under the Apple logo) didn't show up and after a couple (5? 10?) of minutes the fans started making more noise than they ever did. I tried again with the same result.
It did boot from CD though and the disk was accessible. Disk Utility didn't report a problem and the hardware test neither. Subsequent rebooting from the internal hard disk failed again.
Then I reinstalled 10.4 (with archive & install), but with the same result. Then I got a Firewire drive from the computer support department, formatted it, installed 10.4 and copied (nearly) the entire internal hard disk's content to it. I was able to work normally from that disk.
Then I booted again from the 10.4 installation disk, formatted the internal drive, reinstalled 10.4 and then it did boot from the internal drive. I migrated all my files and now everything is working again (although a few things might have gone missing). And I lost nearly a day of work.
I conclude from this that it wasn't the disk, but that somehow an essential part of the boot software got damaged.
My question: how did this happen? What could have caused it? Is there someone with a similar experience (i.e., failure to boot from disk while the disk is still ok)? Is there any way to prevent it from happening again?

we have g5s the same as you. the few times we've ever had an issue with them refusing to boot up have been solved by running diskwarrior. it's an utter 'must have'.
it's a harsh fact that drives (and the operating system that sits on them) do fail from time to time. careful housekeeping (repairing permissions regularly, running disk utility repair and/or diskwarrior) will help to prevent any major problems.
if you have an issue that can't be fixed by doing these things (and we just had one with a file sharing problem) the best course of action is a full reinstall.
we keep a fw800 drive with the latest installers of every application we use handy in each room for this purpose. it's time consuming to stay on top of but worth it when it all goes pear-shaped.

  • Upgrade internal hard disk on ibook G4

    Hello,
I am interested in upgrading the internal hard disk of my ibook G4 from 40GB to something better. Is there an Apple service centre in bangalore, India which will do the upgrade? what manufacturer/model# of HDD will be suitable for my 2005 ibook G4?
Can I run Aperture/Adobe photoshop on the same as in will the system be suitable for that application? I have 1.5 GB ram and an external display attached to the laptop.
    thanks

The words you quoted are supposed to usually mean they
have "service" or access to someone who would be able
to repair or upgrade a computer within Apple specs; those
are usually authorized to do the work, but not Apple.
Some companies doing that kind of work, who don't have
a staff repair service, may collect those for repair and an
other company may pick them up for off-site service.
In some areas, with more than one company listed in the
page resource I cited, some of them are product specialists
and know the line of portable computer very well, so they
would be able to do most things and check it thoroughly.
But those who do not really work on the computer in their
store or attached service (having none) should be checked
into more carefully to discover what they do/where it's done.
The post linked to in your earlier inquiry, where someone
replied to you there with three links to web pages of info,
is worth considering; in that these kinds of jobs can be
tedious and take a great attention to detail with care to not
damage the fine wires and parts inside these portables.
And a skilled tech, with that kind of information, may be
able to replace an iBook's hard disk drive; but some who
only work on Windows OS & PC hardware may be lacking.
Especially when it comes to moving the contents of the
existing drive (or just migrating existing user accounts, etc)
from the old hard drive into a new system installed on the
    new replacement hard disk drive.
Some areas of the world are harder to find the resource to
get a job done correctly; when an old iBook portable I had
for a time needed a reed-switch and cable replaced to fix
a display defect when the lid was opened/closed, I ended
up sending the iBook from AK to SC. (Across the continent.)
No body did the work in my area, or if they really did, charged
more than twice what I paid including shipping it both ways.
More than 5,000 miles. Since then, sold, the iBook still works.
Unfortunately sometimes good qualified service is where
you find it after some effort of looking; where I live by some
comparison, has almost no people; just great natural beauty.
Hopefully someone or another you contact can refer you to
a reasonably fine shop of careful people who are qualified.
You may have to ask around, and perhaps expect the iBook
to be transported miles to some other facility for that job.
PS: are there any indications of an "apple user group" of
interested owners who have, use and meet to discuss their
shared community of those interests, in your area? If so,
sometimes people who get together like that know more.
    Good luck & happy computing!
