It's really too general a question. There are literally dozens of things you should be aware of but since we don't know what you already know we need a more specific question. Please give us more info on your equipment than the motherboard type so you'll get more informed responses. Thanks

  • How to install S-ATA RAID ?

So i use two ordinary ATA drives,
machines boots 'n all; no problems there.
Now i want to add two S-ATA drivers (raid-0) in my msi 875.
I put the drives in SER3 and Ser4 on the MB (manual p 2-19 shows which these are).
    The software installs.
^F allows me to define te two drives as RAID,
The device manager shows under SCSI and RAID controllers:
    WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller,
    along with an exclamation mark:
This device cannot start (Code 10)
I have also tried de-installing the drivers, and other SATA drivers on the CD. Same result.
Who knows what to do ?
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    From Holland... Ad Weterings

I am using sata 3 and 4 on the MB
I set Bios to Sata raid
Hit control 'f' set up a striped array 2 drives 160 each total is 320 gig
    loading XP Pro
    Hit f6
    later hit 's'
    selected XP sata raid
then when it should format the disks it says no hdd (darn it!!!!!)
Well I think I have something that works now but what performance hit will I take After 'S' I choose the XP fastreack driver not the SATA raid.  It is formating now.
    Will this underperform?
If not I hope this info helps others

  • MSI Neo2-FIR P35 failed...How do I retain my RAID 0 setup?

    Hello everyone!
Just a few days ago I turned my PC on, left the room, came back, and found my 'MSI Neo2-FIR P35' dead
Back in 2008, I thought it would be cool to setup my two Samsung 320GB Spinpoint HDs as a RAID 0. I remember when I was piloting my RAID, all data was wiped after I attached it to a different motherboard.
I read that the RAID can be retained if you use a motherboard with the identical 'RAID controllers'. But honestly, I haven't seen any details about the controllers to compare motherboards.
I want to save the data I currently have!
    1) Will the RAID, and thus the data, be recognized if I use another MSI Neo2-P35 motherboard? If so, will the OS boot as if nothing ever happened?
    2) Is it possible to attach the RAID to any newer MSI motherboards?
    3) Does someone have any other advice on how to save my HDs?
    Hope someone can help!

    Hi Svet,
    Thank you for your reply!

place them in another board who use the same raid controller
So, in case I can't find another MSI neo2-FR/FIR P35...How do I know which RAID controller a motherboard has?
What will I be looking for?
"4 SATAII with 2 eSATA ports with transfer rate up to 3Gb/s"? OR "Serial ATA RAID 0/1/5/10"? The latter seems very generic...
    Quote
is it confirmed that the board and not something else
Well To be very honest, I haven't placed my CPU in another PC because I don't know anyone with a 775 socket. So it hasn't been confirmed yet.
But, when i first built my PC I had some DOA parts. This MSI mobo has a smart way of showing what the problem is in case it can't boot through LED-light combinations, but none of these lights are shown... When I connect the power-supply, I do see a RED standby light, even though I think it used to be GREEN . And when I press the power-button nothing happens... occasionally I see the blue LED light of my GPU blink.. but nothing else happens.
    My mobo specs:
    • Intel® ICH9R Chipset
    - Hi-Speed USB (USB2.0) controller, 480Mb/sec, up to 12 ports.
    - 4 SATAII with 2 eSATA ports with transfer rate up to 3Gb/s.
    - PCI Master v2.3, I/O APIC.
    - ACPI 2.0 compliant.
    - Serial ATA RAID 0/1/5/10.
    - Integrated AHCI controller.

  • How to connect multiple Xserve Raid for Best Performance

I like to get an idea how to connect multiple Xserve Raid to get the best performance for FCP to do multiple stream HD.

Again, for storage (and retrieval), FireWire 400 should be fast enough. If you are encoding video directly to the external drive, then FireWire 800 would probably be beneficial. But as long as the processing of the video is taking place on the fast internal SATA drive, and then you are storing files on the external drive, FireWire 400 should be fine.
Instead of speculating about whether it will work well or not, you need to set it up and try your typical work flow. That is the only way you will know for sure if performance is acceptable or not.
For Time Machine, you should use a single 1.5TB drive. It is likely that by the time your backup needs comes close to exceeding that space, you will be able to buy a 3TB (or larger) single drive for the same cost. Also, I would not trust a RAID where the interaction between the two drives is through two USB cables and a hub. If your primary storage drive fails, you need your backup to be something that is simple and reliable.
Oh, and there should be no problem with the adapter, if you already have it and it works.
Edit: If those two external drives came formatted for Windows, make sure you have use Disk Utility Partition tab to repartition and reformat the drive. When you select the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar, at the bottom of the screen +Partition Map Scheme+ should say *GUID Partition Table*. When you select the volume under the drive in the sidebar, Format should say *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*.

Do you have extra hdd? If ye,s you can install a WinXP on this extra OS, and install the Promise driver. After that you should be able to see your RAID drive. Befor ethat, besure you go to BIOS and RAID BOS to check out you have everything set correctly.

You will have to clean the HDD.
You can use diskpart to delete all existing partitions and partition table,  See info @

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766465(v=WS.10).aspx
Or you can use a 3rd party utility downloaded from the internet or the HDD manufacturer to clean the HDD.

  • How so I break a raid mirror yet retain data?

I have 2 500g SATA drives on my Mac Pro3.1. They were set up by a friend as a raid mirror using the disc utility software. My question how can I break the raid "mirror" and use these harddrives as individual harddrives???
    Thanks
    Rich

    From DU's Help:
    *To delete a RAID set*:
    Back up any important files.
In Disk Utility, select a disk in the set that you want to delete, and click RAID.
    Select the RAID set.
If you’re deleting a mirrored RAID set and you see a Convert button, click it to convert the RAID set from version 1.0 to version 2.0.
Deleting a version 2.0 mirrored RAID set leaves a usable copy of the set’s files on each disk. Deleting a version 1.0 set leaves the disks unreadable.
    Click Delete.

  • Silicon S-ATA raid message on boot?

The Silicon S-ATA raid message on boot stays there for (what seems like) an enternity. Can I shorten the time the message is displayed (or go somewhere and disable it?). Thanks! [stats are in sig]

Hi, Yes you can disable it in the bios.  Not sure what bois you are running but it is in there.
Try entering cmos. 4th line down on the left.(advance chipset features)
then the 3rd optioin. (Onboard device)
At the botton of the list you will see onboard sil3132 raid disable enable.  Disable it. save and exit.
Sorry for the line refference but I cannot remember what the line titles are called. (guessed at titles)
    Hope you find it ok.

  • How do I create a RAID array

I want to RAID the two drives in my G4. The upper (boot disc) is 80GB and the lower is 30GB.
How do I set up the RAID (striped) to use both discs?

To set up my RAID I had 3 hard drives, one ATA and 2 SCSI. With the startup system on the ATA drive I used Disk Utility to set the two SCSI drives as a RAID 0 array. Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the system to the RAID array. I now boot from the RAID and use the ATA drive to back up the system. Without the 3rd drive you would need to boot from the installation DVD and use Disk Utility to set up the RAID array, which will erase all data on your drives. To be honest I'm not seeing a huge speed increase with the RAID array; you might be better off using one drive as a system disk and the second to store data, music, video, etc.

  • How do I create a RAID 0 on a P43-C51 mainboard and Windows 7

I just upgraded my computer with a new MSI P43-C51 mainboard, Intel E8400 Dual Core and Windows 7.  I have two identical Western Digital 250GB SATA drives.  In my previous system, using Windows XP, I had the two drives configured in RAID 0.  I was unable to find the RAID drivers (and still haven't found them) for the RAID configuration so I erased the hard drives and started over new.  I have the system up and running and want to re-install Windows 7 but in RAID 0 format.  How do I do this?
I have downloaded the RAID drivers: Intel_HECI_MB.zip from the MSI download site but I haven't been able to use the software to create a RAID 0 configuration.
With my last board and XP, it was straight forward.  The old BIOS itself allowed the creation of a RAID 0 configuration and the board CD included the drivers for XP.  I am wondering if I overlooked something basic and my new board just doesn't support RAID.
Any advice or help would be appreciated and thank you in advance!

Thanks, that is what I suspected.  Now I have a good excuse to upgrade the hard drives to SATA II  !

  • [RAID 0 issue] - K7N2 Delta ILSR:how can i save my RAID-0 SATA DISK datas

Hi all, as a new member, i have to underlign the fact that this forums' members are very active and helpful ( personally, i thank the front usb issue post author    ).
I've an XP on a single SATA RAID-0 disk ( Promise Fasttrak 3xx duno ), since a few days, i think that the DRAM controller is KO because the mobo doesn't accept DDRAM anymore ( DDRAM is OK on other PC ). The Mboard makes long & regular beeps and i have no Video ( no BIOS & no POST ), the D-bracket indicates  no memory module or memory damaged ( case 4, led 4 is the only green ).
If u have an idea to help me..
If there's nothing more to do, how can i recover the HDD's datas ? They are very important..i've heard that the disk should be plugged on the same raid chipset ( the better is the same Mboard )
Please can you help, and sorry for my French-english
EDIT: I'll fulfill w/ more specs this WE.

Just plugging/unplugging the memory somethime solves the problem. You could have had a bad insertion or just dust in the slot. Good luck with your working computer
I already answered your RAID concerns. RAID0 with only 1 HDD is no RAID at all, just a software trick to force the controler to use the drive.
    Quote from: frenchy2k1 on 02-April-05, 04:15:32
If your drive is raid0, but only 1 drive, it is no RAID at all, so it should work like any disk on any computer and be recognized normally.

  • Real HW S-ATA Raid card support in Solaris 10 x86?

I am trying to find an SATA RAID controller (real HW raid, not the
pseudo raid that comes on many mb) that works with Solaris 10 on x86.
I thought maybe the LSI MegaRAID SATA 150-4 might. Solaris has an amr
driver ported from FreeBSD according to the Solaris amr man page as
well as some webpage at Sun. This card is supported with the amr
driver on FreeBSD. However, the card is not correctly identified by
Solaris 10 at install time. There is also an LSI driver for download
for the MPT Fusion stuff and this card supposedly adheres to that
architecture family but it also does not work (I did it as an ITU
    install addition).
I am also wondering about the LSI MegaRAID SATA 300x-8 card. There is
something in the LSI supplied itmpt driver that shows an 8-port
SAS/SATA controller support but I am not sure if this one is it as I do
    not have the card.
I am also wondering about the Adaptec 2410SA or 2810SA cards. On
FreeBSD they are supported by the aac driver and Solaris has an aac
driver that is ported from FreeBSD. Anyone have any experiences with
    these?
The Areca 11x0 series has a Solaris (not yet bootable) driver from the
factory (they emailed me a copy). I would prefer a bootable driver
since my server only has the disks for the RAID (mirror plus hot swap).
Any others that I need to look at ?
Alternatively, how to coerce the system (by changing stuff :-) to recognize under the existing mpt / amr the LSI MegaRAID SATA 150-4 at boot time from CD during an install. It shares the PCI id of 1000 (PCI1000) but the subid (after PCI1000,) is different than the SCSI brethren that are supported
    Thanks
    Chad

I'm trying to find a RAID SATA controller to use with Solaris 10 too....did you have any luck?

  • How to GET RID of RAID and get back to IDE??

    Hi,
I have a great Z800 Workstation with a 1.5TB HDD running Win7Pro-64. I've been using an 128GB SSD cache (Synapse/Dataplex) for about a year with no trouble, but stupidly thought that Intel's RST (Rapid Storage Technology) would do a better job, for writing in particular. So I installed RST... and run into touble.
RST put the two disks into a RAID... but since the disks are not the same geometry, and I appear to have an old chipset, it never actually worked: RST was unable to create a cache (i.e. to accelerate the HDD with the SSD) and the SSD became useless, as its Dataplex conroller clashed with the RAID.
In short, I would like to GET RID of the RAID (in view to replace the HDD by an SSD altogether)... but that appears to be impossible: I uninstalled RST and followed the "removdrv.txt" advice to switch (back) from RAID to IDE in the machine Setup... but Windows BSODs unless I keep RAID. Yes, I tried any and every "Repair" options Win7 could offer.
So my question is: how can I get rid of the (fake/useless) RAID and get back to IDE?
    Many thanks for your advice!

I have some bad news for you.
If there is an actual RAID configuration present, then there is no turning back.
Breaking a RAID set destroys data on the set and makes it unbootable. That is why you are seeing the BSOD. If you kep playing with it, eventually it won't even boot up in RAID.
That means starting again from scratch with a new OS install.

  • Got new miniMac servers with 2x750GB drives. How to setup and confirm RAID mirror?

Literally just got shiny new miniMac Server with the dual 70GB internakky hard drives/disks with
OS X 10.7.$ LION pre-installed. What a nice machine in a super cool box!
Seemed to bootup and run fine!
Now my issue (there will be more for this MAC newbie):
    A. How to setup AND more importantly (item B below) CONFIRM that a RAID MIRROR is working?
Want nothing fancier than 2-nd drive is exact duplicate of 1-st drive at all times.
That is, an 'active and full up-to -the second" backup of the main 1-st drive.
I have done nothing to 1-st drive as it came from APPLE.
When I try to setup RAID set using DISK Utility, I get message about system(1-st drive) can't be used in a RAID or such.
yet I can add 2-nd drive to what I tink is a RAID set and then 'Enable' it.
It seems to add another entry to thr left-side of drves list panel but not sure that 1-st and 2-nd drives are BOTH in the new
"RAID SET' or that the set just consists of the "single" 2-nd disk?
    B. I don't think that 1-st drive data is actually being duplicated to 2-nd drive.
For instance, how do I know that it was 'caught up' to match 1-st drive AND then is
    staying caught up?
    C. A 'RAID UTILITY' Icon brings up a not-available message, but I think that is because I don't
have HARDWARE RAID controller, just software RAID, correct?
    D. What is 'Time Machine' and how does it play into this? I do assume that somehow/someway I need to
have off-machine backups also to be truly protected? How would a 2-nd identical miniMAC server be best
deployed to back each other up, in addition to their own internal RAID-ed disks that items above address?
My whole point of buying 2x750GB disks was to have mirror RAID set and
(foolishly) assumed that factory would set it up that way.
Please help me get setup right so when the inevitable crash happens,
I have some chance of recovering from it.

    A. What are you adding to the RAID: a partition or a hard drive? You can only add hard drives to a RAID. RAID Utility should confirm that your RAID is working
    B. No, I don't think so
    C. It's because you haven't got RAID hardware.
    D. Time Machine is a backup system in external drives. If you want, you can do backups in a external hard drive.
