How to insert a Gap clip (empty clip)

I was having trouble inserting an empty clip in the main timeline to be able to add more footage after the b-roll footage ended.

To insert a gap clip: Choose Edit > Insert Gap (or press Option-W).
To insert a placeholder clip: Choose Edit > Insert Placeholder (or press Command-Option-W).

In FCPX I would like to add a "gap" clip above my main timeline edit so I can add markers - see http://fcpx.tv/Pages/tips6.html for the idea.
This will then be the length of my edit.
Unfortunately I have not found a way to drag a gap clip or insert a gap clip other than add a small clip at the beginning and end and ad on in the middle (which I don't really want to do. Any ideas?

why not applying the markers there?
the storyline defines the timing, the content, the pace, the … story. If you change any position there, your 'marker track' is completely useless/out of synch!
(sorry for being stubborn, but I really don't understand why TWO, independent ( ! ) timelines are needed for one project )

In iMovie 08 I could insert photos over clips.
I can´t see how to do this in iMovie 09.
If it is possible, could someone please tell me how to do it?
In mid-stream of an edit and would be very much assisted if I could be advised asap.

Hi -
In Preferences, select Show Advanced Tools.
Close Preferences
Drag the photo you want to the place you want it to inserted, and drop
A menu will open that will allow you the choice of inserting or using the photo as a cutaway (among other things).

Please import the clip in the project panel, right click on the clip and select new sequence from clip option, you can also drag the clip to new item icon at the bottom of the project panel to create a sequence.

Do you happen to know how I could insert a video clip into the middle of a movie like you do in FCP? Can you add tracks and insert the clip above the spot i need to change for each movie.
I don't want to render the whole movie (convert it into a MPeg2) each time.

No - DVD timelines are a little different to FCP. If you need to add a clip to the stream, you need to split the exisitng clip (you could trim it back to where you want to insert the new piece) and drag the new piece onto the same timeline. If you trimmed the existing piece then add another instance of it to the timeline and trim the new part from the left until you get to what you want as the out point.
If you have a collection of video clips on your DVDSP timeline, simply dragging a new one on will shuffle the others along appropriately. However, the audio will not shuffle with them, and you'll end up moving it all manually.
The very best thing is to create the timeline precisely as you want it in FCP and encode it to MPEG2 before bringing it in to DVDSP. Remember that DVDSP is not an editor, it is a place to assemble your work - it won't do anything remotely like FCP in that respect.

1) Move a clip (or any portion thereof) from your Event clip to your project and place it where you need it.
2) With the newly added clip still selected in your project, grasp and move the right and left handles to set the exact frames you wish to use as your "in" and "out" points.
3) Select the "Spit" option to segment the selected area into what you want to keep and what you don't need.
4) Select the segment(s) you don't want and press the "Delete" key to remove it/them from the project window.
5) Repeat as needed to create your sequence of segments and then add titles and transitions as needed.
Note: Since your editing in iMovie '08 is non-linear, non-destructive, and "by-reference," you can source the same content multiple times to a single project or even to multiple projects and overlap your "splits" since they are "logical" rather than physical.

How do I eliminate gaps betwen uploaded clips? When I transfer my video from the camera to the PC, it gets divided into clips, sometimes right in the middle of a word. When I load these clips into Elements 11 there are gaps between the clips. How do I close up those gaps and get my words put back together?

Are you using Window 7 or 8 64 bit for your Premiere Elements 11?
Are you in anyway dealing with GoPro camera and or Cineform.avi source media?
What is the camera from which your source media are coming? What is the camera recording set at? How are you tranferring your source media into Premiere Elements 11, Add Media/??? What is being set as the project preset by you or the project?
The generalization is to right click the gap and click on the pop up "Delete and Close Gap". But, without further details on your specific situation, that is just a generalization.
Another possibility...are you saying that your camera is producing video with complete scenes, but, once the "intact" video hits the Premiere Elements Timeline or Project Assets, you find your "intact" video split into clips? If so, that could be the doings of the AutoAnalzyer whose options are in the Elements Organizer 11 and need to be turned off there under Edit Menu/Preferences/MediaAnalysis.
Lots ot consider and review. But, more details, please so we can put this altogether and sort out the details.

You can drag and drop a photo at any point (at any frame... 30 frames per second.) Make sure you go to iMovie Preferences and enable Advanced Tools. You can drop a photo, and a pop up menu will come up. Choose Cutaway from the menu.
Further you can use drag and drop to select a range of frames, and then split the clip.
For example, lets say I have a clip of 60 frames (or 2 seconds).
I can drag so that the yellow border covers the first 30 frames. Then right-click/Split Clip. (Or EDIT/Split Clip.
I then have two virtual clips in the project. (Note: the underlying clip in the Event has not changed).

How do I delete a clip without every other clip in my timeline moving over?

So i've been editing for hours, and somehow, the first 30 seconds of my movie were screwed up. So now i'm trying to re-edit the first 30 seconds. When i try to delete a clip, the rest of the clips following the deleted one, move over to this empty space. I do not want this to happen!!!!! I want the other clips to stay in the same place!!!! How do I delete a clip without having all the clips after it move over to the deleted space????

Welcome to the discussions.
In answer to your question, the clips behind the one you delete must move over to close the gap between the clips, an empty space left by the clip that you deleted. Otherwise, you would have a black/blank part in your movie.
You CAN purposely create a black clip if you wish, but probably you just want the movie to continue as you have created it, leaving out the deleted clip. If your movie is just video, it should work out to be the same once the deleted clip is gone.
However, if you have added some other audio, and not locked it to its corresponding video clip, the timing of the audio to the video will be off. Use the "Advanced" tool to select 'Lock audio clip at playhead' to avoid this. Once the audio is locked to a specific video clip, edits to other clips can be done without separating the audio and video. Occasionally, they still do get misaligned, so you do have to keep checking.
If you really want to keep all the other clips the same without doing anything else, switch to Timeline view, and move the trailing movie over from the clip you want to delete, making sure that the length you move is the same as the clip to be deleted. Then, delete the clip. iMovie will create a black clip in that space and the rest of your clips will remain untouched. However, as I said, the movie will be interupted by this black clip.

c. You are doing a Picture in Picture (PiP) and want the picture (or video insert) to move to different locations within the frames over the course of
time.

GB arbitrarily inserting incorrect audio clip

was editing a podcast and inserted some audio clips...later, while checking the mixdown, i noticed that the wrong clips had been inserted...seemed GB arbitrarily selected another audio clip from another part of the podcast...very strange...
i was able to recover the correct clip from a previously saved copy...
any idea how this happened?
i also noticed that, while shortening one clip, i sometimes inadvertantly shorten EVERY clip in the session, screwing up ALL the editing i'd done...(this has happened TWICE to me afte a couple hours' work, just when i think i'm finished, and i wind up having the scrap the whole project and start over because all the editing has been screwed up....SAVE VERSIONS FREQUENTLY!!!)

I've only seen the 'Wrong Clip" problem once. I spet three days trying to figure it out (so it would never happen again), I never did. No matter what I did (and I did a lot) I could not rid the file of these errors.
For the shortening problem, you accidently had more than one clip selected, it's easy to do.

You drag the clip from the browser to the clip on the timeline. Wait till the timeline clip goes white. Drop it and pick from the menu that appears the replace option you want.
