How to instal SATA2 WD Scorpio HDD on T61p?

I got a new WD scorpiio blue 500GB HDD (SATAII).
Does anyone know how to instal it on T61p?
I mirrored everything with Acronis and but the computer does not boot from it when old drive is replaced.
Is it a SATA2/SATA1 issue? How can I switch the HDD to work at SATA1? There does not seem to be a jumper switch (as in some Seagate drives). Is tehre any other way?
Any help will be appreciated

Hi aabbar123,
I don't think it's a SATA1/2 issue. More likely it's a cloning issue. When cloning your old hard drive to your new one, install the new one in your ThinkPad and put the old one on the SATA-> USB adapter (or whatever you're using to connect). Make sure to tell True Image to include the MBR/Track 0, and to install to active, primary partition on your new drive.
What version of True Image are you using?

  • Qosmio G20 - How to install with one single HDD and without RAID?

I want to set up Qosimo G20 new with Windows XP 32.
I bought a new harddisk and put it into slot 1. I would like to run it without any RAID (so slot 2 is empty)
XP installation CD did not discover the HD
I entered BIOS to see if the HD was there - The HD is recognized normal
then I thought I have to change RAID to JBOD (page 3 BIOS) but this did not work
I confirmed it with the 1234 key - but nothing hapened.
In another task they said to install RAID-drivers (pressing F6... while starting XP installation)
I put the drivers on a USB-stick - but the system will not discover it (and there is no floppy drive)
I have no idea how to install XP on this Laptop.
    Any hints?
    Chris

    >I put the drivers on a USB-stick - but the system will not discover it (and there is no floppy drive)
Win XP does not recognize USB flash memory while setup. This is possible since Vista OS so either you will need a USB floppy drive or you will built a new Win XP CD and will add the RAID driver using the nLite software.
Here is a nice FAQ how to add the RAID (or SATA driver) to using nLite.
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB85017Z0000R01.htm
Note: this describes how to add the SATA drivers you have to add the RAID drivers so dont use SATA driver but RAID driver
    Good luck

  • How to install OS X  after HDD was replaced with new one?

    Hi folks,
I got new 500G HDD in my mac. After i have started it with C pressed selected <Use English as the main language> Then <Welcome to Mac Installer> Then <Software License Agreement> Then<Select a Destination> but there is nothing to select, there is no destination volume at all.
Could some one tell me what i need to do to install OS X.
    Thanks

Hi mosaicto, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Most drives come MS-Dos, we need HFS+ to install AND GUID Partitioning if an IntelMac.
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Erase Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • Os x in ssd and how to install win8 in previous hdd by bootcamp

I want to remove my optical drive on my macbook pro(101) and replace it with a ssd (80G).
If i move my os x to ssd .Can i install win8  by bootcamp in my previous hdd disk.

From everything I've read, it might be possible, but you will have to do some serious hoop jumping to make it work.  To use Boot Camp, you must install on the primary drive in the portable computer, and you must install from the internal optical drive if the system shipped with one.  That would mean that you would not be able to have the SSD in the optical bay when you install Windows 8, but it does not mean that you can't install Windows before you put the SSD in the optical bay.
As a side note, depending upon which MacBook Pro model you have, putting an SSD in the optical bay is not a wise choice.  Some models have issues with the SATA link negotiation process, and in some models, the drive is "logically disconnected" at random times, which would not be good if you are using the drive as your boot drive.

    Hi
At the bottom of the unit you can find two HDD bays. Right?
But one of the bays does not contain any connectors? Right?
At the first look this might be a little bit strange but fact is that different Satellite P200/P200D models were available on the market with different motherboards.
Some would support a 2nd HDD but some units dont. But all models supports the same bottom covers and some people think that an 2nd HDD would be possible which is wrong.

  • How to install Seagate 160g SATA2 7200.9rpm on an MSI 945GM2

i just got a seagate 160g SATA2 7200.9 hdd. i have been trying to install it on an MSI 945GM2 mobo.
the bios recognizes the hdd, and so does Win XP sp2 but everytime i click on the drive windows tells me that the drive is not formatted.
i can install the HDD as a 137g size but i would rather not partition it and have the whole 160g without any partition.
Seagate said to install the drivers during installation (pressing F6 during a clean install) but it still doesnt work.
SeaTools indicates that there is nothing wrong with the HDD.
so i guess there is something wrong with the mobo. or the driversof the mobo that i have installed from the MSI site.
any help on this will be apreciated. thanks in advance.

    1. i did the disk management format but its still the same, in fact, disk management has a message saying that the formatting was not completed, and exits. what happenes next is that the drive is no longer in the list of available drives.
    2.  will try the bios config as suggested because right now bios is set up to "auto" detect.
    3.  by the way, the board has no trouble recognizing and installing another SATA1 drive Seagate 80g wich i use s the boot drive.

  • [s205] How to install Win7 x64 from scratch on a new hdd?

    Hello,
I have a little problem to solve...
I own a s205. My hard drive died. I replaced it with a new one. After that I tried to install Win7 x64. During the install it created 2 small partitions. It was strange to me, I saw it for the first time. Later I read that this is because of UEFI.
Anyway, everything installed good, but after installing drivers I encountered few problems. Neither of net card were working. I started to look for some informations and I know that the problem is UEFI.
My question - can anyone write a guide how to install Win7 x64 on s205 in Legacy mode, so everything would work like before? Unfortunately I don't have any rescue dvds or any other source of Lenovos images.
    Regards,
    Daniel

  • How to install Windows on a SATA boot drive

Here is how to install Windows XP on a SATA boot drive.  This procedure was first developed by syar2003 and has been used by many iusers ncluding myself.   Although it was originally developed for Neo2 mb's and Windows XP Pro, it has general applicability to systems as well.
    1.  Have only the SATA drive you want to be the boot drive active in your system.  Disconnect the power to all other HDD's if any.
    2.  Have only one optical drive active. Disconnect the power to the other opticals if any. (Best to have a burner optical as master on IDE1.)
    3.  Plug SATA drive into SATA 1 on the mb.  (it may show us as an IDE drive somewhere down the list in BIOS.  That's okl)
    4.  Enable appropriate SATA options in BIOS.  Set boot order to floppy, cd, SATA drive.  Set boot priority to SATA drive.
    5.  Partition and format the SATA HDD using the utilites CD that came with the SATA drive.  (If you don't have an HDD utilities disk, download one from the website of your HDD manufacturer.)
    6.  Run Windows  setup.  No need to load drivers at the F6 promt unless you are planning to do a RAID configuration.
    7.  Windows XP should install without incident.
    8.  After you are up and running, plug the power back into your other HDD and optical drives if any.
If you have a board older than the K8 series, it may be necessary to load the SATA drivers at the F6 prompt.  If the above procedure does not work, than try it again loading the SATA drivers.
If this procedure does not work for you, it is likely that your particular SATA HDD has some compatablity problem with Windows setup and/or your motherboard.  The solution to this is to try another SATA drive.  In general, most failures using this procedure have been traced to certain WD, Seagate and Hitachi SATA drivers of smaller capacities.  Fewer problems seem to have occured with Maxtor HDD's.

Kaplan, from an earlier post of mine regarding sata2 hdds - I have them plugged into the sata1&2 ports, installed the nvidia raid first and then installed winxp (in both raid 0 and raid 1).  My bios is 3.1 and its a known problem that bios 3.3 & 3.4 have nvidia raid problems but seems to be fixed in the beta bios 3.53:
I just purchased 2 hitachi deskstar sata2 80gb hdds ($60 each at zzf) and the interesting thing about them is that you have to "enable" sata2.  I have been testing the performance of sata1, sata2, raid1 and raid0 and the results are below.
The drives themselves are factory default set at sata1. Since I purchased OEM, no software or instructions were included.  I had to go to the hitachi website download section to download a dos based program (the features program) to enable sata2.  After enabling the hdds to sata2, they were recognized in winxp in the nforce ADMA controller device driver and the screen reads with the primary channel as Serial ATA Generation 2 - 3G...and all 4 boxes below it are checked (the boxes enable bios select xfer mode, enable read caching, enable write caching and enable command queuing are checked).  An interesting thing about the sata2 spec is that all sata2 hdds must come standard with NCQ...its not advertised on these 80 gb hdds on the hitachi website (unlike the larger hitachi sata2 hdds) but its a standard sata2 spec and these 80gb hitachi hdds are recoginized in winxp as sata2.
The other interesting feature about the hitachi sata2 hdds is setting them up to operate in an adjustable "performance" to "silence" mode.  The hdds are default set at high perfromance but you can manually lower the performance to increase the silence of the hdds which is fully adjustable to your liking.  I tested the highest silence/lowest performance setting and you cannot hear the hard drive at all.
Testing - I tested the 2 hitachi sata2 deskstars with the first result in sata1 mode, the second in sata2 mode, the third in raid1 mode and the fourth in raid0 mode.
First, a significant increase in raid0 over sata1, sata2 and raid1 with sequential reads and writes (PC Wizard).
    Write: 28mb/s vs 29mb/s vs 27mb/s vs 53mb/s
    Read: 45mb/s vs 46mb/s vs 43mb/s vs 83mb/s
Second, significant increase in sata 2, raid 1 & raid 0 over sata1 with buffered reads and writes (PC Wizard).
    Write: 104mb/s vs 176mb/s vs 165mb/s vs 266mb/s
    Read: 123mb/s vs 200mb/s vs 200mb/s vs 293mb/s
Third, significant increase in sata 2, raid 1 & raid 0 over sata1 with burst reads (HD Tach).
    Burst Read: 133mb/s vs 225mb/s vs 219mb/s vs 334 mb/s
It is interesting to note that raid1 is better than sata1 but marginally slower in all tests over sata2.  Raid0 is significantly faster on all tests.

  • How should I setup a SATA HDD on K8N Neo2 Platinum?

I bought a 200Gb SATA hard disk (Maxtor 6V200E0). This is the first time I work with SATA HDDs.
I plugged the HDD as I always did with an IDE HDD, and installed Windows XP -I have configured nothing-. The problem I'm experiencing is that sometimes Windows XP boots fine, and sometimes it doesn't. After the POST, the Windows Logo does never appear. I do not see anything.
Reading the Manual, I believe to understand that no matter if you only have one SATA HDD, I should setup nVRAID in the BIOS. Is that correct?. If I configure the nVRAID in the BIOS and setup RAID 0, should this problem disappear?. How should I setup my SATA HDD?. Is it the same to connect it to SATA1/SATA2/SATA3/SATA4 controller?. Or should it be connected into SATA1 -just because there's only 1 HDD in the system-?.
    Thanks a lot!

Yes, unfortunatelly there's a major issue with this kind of HDDs and nForce3&4 chipset based mainboards. I found the following article at the Maxtor web-site -I asked them to send me the firmware upgrade; standing by-:
    Question
I have heard or read that Maxtor drives are incompatible with nForce3 or nForce4 chipsets, or that I need a firmware update to make a Maxtor drive compatible with the nForce chipset. Is this true?
         Answer
Note: This solution is only to be applied to the listed products and only when used with the nVidia© nForce3© or nForce4© chipsets. If you are unsure as to which chipset you have, please contact your motherboard manufacturer or visit your motherboard manufacturer's website for clarification.
Firmware updates are not upgrades. They offer no performance enhancements and exist only to provide specific compatibility resolutions. If you have a drive that is working properly in a computer, you do not need a firmware update.
Do not use a firmware update that is not authorized directly by Maxtor as there are variations of firmware for different revisions of drives that can render drives inoperable if applied to the wrong drive.
Applying firmware to a drive that is not authorized by Maxtor will void the warranty on the drive as this would be considered an unauthorized modification. Please see Maxtor's Limited Warranty Statement for more information.
If your drive came inside an OEM machine such as a Dell, Apple, Gateway etc., do not apply a firmware update at all as this will void the warranty which is held by that manufacturer. Please contact your OEM vendor directly.
The following issues have been identified with Maxtor SATA II drives and the nVidia nForce4 controller:
Data Corruption: If you are experiencing data corruption issues, the problem is not with the hard drive firmware. Please visit nVidia's website to update to the latest nVidia chipset drivers to resolve this issue. Make sure to be familiar with your motherboard specifications as there are several variations.
NCQ: If you are experiencing problems with NCQ (Native Command Queueing) please see nVidia's Knowledgebase ID 768 for more information with an issue nVidia is having with NCQ and the nForce4 chipset, and a forthcoming resolution. They also offer a solution to temporarily disable NCQ.
No Detection: If you are experiencing a problem with your Maxtor SATA-II drive not being detected by your nForce3 or nForce4 host controllers at bootup:
Note: This does not apply if your drive is connected to a non-nForce3 or nForce4 controller such as SIIG (Silicon Image), HighPoint, Promise etc. Many motherboards have multiple host controllers onboard so make sure you are familiar with your motherboard specifications and schematics.
The drives affected are those listed in the following table:
    Model begins with:
    Code (Firmware revision)
    6B- or 7B-
    BANC1980
    BANC1B70
    BANC1BM0
    BANC1BY0
    BANC1E00
    6L- or 7L-
    BANC1G00
    BANC1G10
    BANC1G20
    6H- or 7H-
    HA431BW0
    6V- or 7V-
    VA111610
    VA101610
    VA131610
    VA141610
    Example of a drive label:
    Image
To check your current firmware revision on the drive without removing it from the system, use the Powermax diagnostic CD. Drive model, Serial and firmware Revision is displayed in the upper right hand corner after selecting the drive to test.
A firmware update to resolve this issue for Maxtor SATA II drives is available by contacting Maxtor Support. Please have the drive serial number and the Code number available, which will be listed on the top label of the drive itself.
Firmware updates will be issued for those drives experiencing this problem only, not for experimental troubleshooting. Due to the nature of a firmware code update, a drive can be potentially rendered inoperable so it is critical that data is backed up first.

  • I need to install a new hard disk - not sure how to install

    Hello;
I travelled for a month, and didn't turn off my imac, which I thought I did. My country is hot at this time of the year.
When I got back home, I found that the desktop was crashed, so I did a restart and the computer never booted. I tried again and again.
I performed qa recovery boot, and using the utility I tried to do a disk repair. It initially found problems and started working on them. However, it always crashed in the process after many hours. After several repititions and a lot of research, I booted my iMac with a ubuntu live CD and the diagnoses it performed told me that:-
1- The hard disk will fail, and this is inevitable, something about S.M.A.R.T. (?).
2- There were HDD fan cooling thermal problem, and some read/write problems, and something third.
At this point, I recovered the 'User' folder that includes  the desktop, my documents, pictures, etc, and seems ok to run on other O/s's.
I am willing to also retrieve the applications folder if possible, with all the programs.
I feel I need to replace my 1 TB hdd with a new one, but if I did, I have no clue how to install it. I do not have the installation CD's. I bought it installed, and then upgraded to snow leapord using iTunes.
If I found a shop to do the replacement of the HDD' how would I install Snow Leapord again? Is there any other advise?

5 hours to do 6 GB of transfer is NOT normal, even for USB 2.0 so there's something wrong here. I'd say cancel it, wipe the drive and then test the integrity of the drive. Do some file transfers over to and see if it's behaving normally. It could be a bad USB cable, it could be a bad drive or bad enclosure. As it's new, I suspect you haven't really put it through its paces yet and it's important to do that first before commissioning it to serve as your "reliable backup."
