How to install a new 360 GB hard drive to replace my 60 GB using Time Machine?

How do I install a new 320 GB hard drive on my MacBook using Time Machine? I have purchased the hard drive and know how to take out the old drive and put in the new drive.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html

    Yes.
And will it restore if the hd isn't even there? Like what if it got stolen or destroyed.
    Also yes.
Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • New hard drive on iMac but can't use time machine backup

I just installed a new hard drive on my 2007 iMac but it will not let me back up to a time machine backup.  I can see the files i want but has the red circle with this message  :The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  help!

You haven't gone about this the right way. After installing OS X, when you booted from the new drive, you were prompted to transfer data from a Time Machine backup, among other options. That's what you should have done. The simplest, but not the fastest, way to recover is to start over by erasing the startup volume and installing again.

A waste of CD-ROM...........,in china, many people install linux  just  by iso, don't burn the iso,
could you give me the two files (the "vmlinz "and the "initrd.img") in  archlinux2008.03.iso, those  can't  find  in  archlinux2008.06.iso

Do you have a USB stick you could copy the image to? Where I live, a CD costs $0.50 at most. To put that into perspective. A coffee costs a $1.00. Either a CD costs a lot more than a coffee where you live or are you telling me you'd rather get a lot of grey hair than buy half a coffee?
Sorry I can't be of much help. I don't know how to do this method of installation. If you're desperate, you could try making an extra partition, and trying something with that. Take a look at these:

  • How big a hard drive do I need for iMac and Time Machine?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere already. I am going to buy an iMac, probably the new 24" with a 320G internal HDD. I already have one Lacie external 320G HDD so I was wondering whether I can use this for Time Machine backups, or do I need to buy a bigger one? If so, how big? Is there a rule of thumb for working out how much hard drive space you need to have for Time Machine, for instance if I were to buy the 500G iMac what would I need?
    thanks.

I agree with the "double the size" rule of thumb. You should also consider how much of the 320GB you are actually using and are likely to use in the next year or two. After all, it's the amount of storage you use that matters, not the size of the disk. Disks will very likely be cheaper soon. You should also keep in mind that TM deletes old archive data when it runs out of disk space. So as long as you have more disk space than you have data to back up, TM will work, though you will lose older versions of your data.
So if your 320GB drive only has 100GB used and you're not the kind of person who eats up disk like there's no tomorrow, the 320GB drive should be fine for now. If you expect that 320GB disk to be full soon then a 750GB TM disk is more like what you need.
The same logic applies to a 500GB iMac. If you only expect to use 250GB in the next year or two then a 500GB TM disk should be OK. A 1TB drive will be a lot cheaper next year or the year after.

  • Does an external hard drive have to stay plugged in with Time Machine?

I have an external hard drive but I do not always leave it plugged in.  I usually back up my computer every week or so and am just now getting around to using Time Machine. If i plug in my external hard drive and press "Back up now" will Time machine back up my entire computer again or just what has been updated? Do I have to leave the slider for Time Machine in the On position or should I turn it off until the next time I plug it in?
    Thanks

Only if you want it to continue backing up the computer. If you eject it Time Machine will suspend backups. Time Machine will reinitiate backups when the drive is reconnected.
If nothing has changed, the selecting Back up Now will not create a completely new backup.

  • My backup hard drive does not have enough space for time machine to perform a back up even after erasing entire contents of bu hard drive

My backup hard drive does not have enough space for time machine to perform a back up even after erasing entire contents of bu hard drive.  The hard drive has been in service for almost two years performing this function with no sign of failure.  How do I adjust time machine perameters?

The only way to limit the size of the backup is to exclude data from the backup, which you can do in Time Machine preferences.
If you use multiple browsers, have you tried clearing your browser caches? However, that's just a stop gap if it works. You either need to limit what you backup or get another drive.

  • If you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also remove it from time machine on external hard drive

if you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also delete it from time machine on the external hard drive ?

As the others say, no, the backup copy won't be deleted immediately, but it will eventually.
If you want to delete all backups of a selected item, such as for space or security reasons, see #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

  • Installing a new Solid State Hard Drive

I recently purchased a Lenovo B575. I'm totally satisfied with the system, however, I would like to swap out the original hard drive for a smaller, faster, 32 GB SSD.
My plan is to host the OS and frequently used software on the SSD, and everything else (seldom used software, documents, media, etc.) on an external HD.
As far as I can tell, there is no real simple way to do this...which is why I'm posting here.
I've considered using a HD backup utility to copy (sector for sector) the data from the existing drive to the new drive, but due to the presence of a hidden partition, the size bloats to over the 32 BG capacity of the SSD drive I have.
I considered installing the new hard drive, and trying to restore my system using restore DVDs created by the OneKey software provided with the system, but it appears that the hidden partition on the original drive plays a role in the restoration of the machine.
I have also considered using a retail WIndow 7 Premium disc to do a fresh Windows install, but I can think of a couple of key problems that may arise...
    1. An OEM product key may not be valid for a retail version of Windows
    2. I may have problems reinstalling all the necessary drivers for the B575's hardware
What is the easiest way to install a OEM factory clean and original copy of Windows 7 Premium onto a new 32 GB hard drive? In other words...I'd like for windows on my NEW drive to boot up as it did the first time I booted up my computer.
    Brief System Specs:
    Lenovo B575
    250GB HD
8 GB RAM (Came with 4 GB, upgraded to 8 GB)
    AMD E-350 Processor 1.6 GHz
    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit
Thanks in advance for any help.

i put a microcenter sandforce in mine.
here how i install win 7.
i get a 4gb usb key NO OTHERSIZE!
i download the windows 7 usb tool that will convert the disk into a iso and make the keybootable.
read the directions i normally just drag and drop now but i been doing the ms beta for years so do it the said way.
windows installs from a usb key to a ssd in 15 mins.
press the F12 button to select the key and boot from it.
the B575 has two disk options.
one is the standard 2.5 notebook drive.
there also a msata port open next to the tiny wireless card.
intel/ocz a few others make a 32 gb model that used in the rapid boot.
there running cheap too sata 2 speed not as fast as full size drives but close.
stay away from sandforce controllers-they power hungry there for a desktop.
a M4 is a great ssd as for the new samsung 830 it super light power wise HOWEVER i cant get mine to go over 255 read speed.
it comes with norton and ssd software that really good.
buy the desktop model it will install fine.
so if you want to clone or copy then the samsung 830 64gb model is a great buy at $140.this is a great notebook ssd but cpu is a little high on some disk tests but is one of the best drives made all samsung parts.
i felt the sandforce adata clone was a bit twitchy and battery life was not good even with brazos tweeker undervolting it.
the samsung also dose all the tweeks as well as very advanced ones.go the msata route and you get to keep the platter drive.and do the rapid boot but who needs a platter drive in a notebook with usb drive kits for 10 bucks and esata ports.
    plus a rom drive.

I have only used DVDs that are not supposed to be copied.  Now I have a video course that recommends installing the DVD to the hard drive, and suggests launching the program from the hard drive will be better.

Insert the DVD, double-click it to show the folder, and drag that to the desktop, then it will copy.

  • How to install Snow Leopard onto external hard drive.

I'm currently running on 10.5.8, and I just bought the Snow Leopard installation disc to update to 10.6.3.
My mac has been running on an external hard drive for about a year. The internal just stopped working.
I want to  install Snow Leopard onto my external hard drive, but all of my files are on there, and I read that if I do the install, all of the data will be erased.
If I used time machine to back up the files before I do the install, are they at risk of being erased, since they will be back-uped on the external?
This is probably super obvious, but I want to be very careful with this.
Any help is very much appreciated!
    ^__^

    1. The data won't be erased unless a problem occurs.
    2. The Time Machine backup should be on a different drive, as drives can fail.
