How to install a new hard drive without bootable disc/usb

Hi- my hard drive has totally failed and although I can get into disk utility it won't let me create images and keeps coming up with input/output errors when I try.
I don't have another mac to work from and have no discs whatsoever even for older OS versions
I've ordered a new hard drive(a seagate 750GB 7400rpm one) but how do I get mountain lion on the new hard drive without any discs? If I just put in my new hard drive will it come up with an option? I have a mid 2009 MBP if that helps

Here is how it helps:
You need the Utilities from Recovery_HD. Your broken Mac can boot from a Thumb drive.
Use this article to download this Utility to copy the Recovery_HD from your older, working Mac to a minimum 1GB USB thumb drive:
OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant
Then boot the new mac with the thumb drive by holding down Alt/Option, wait wait wait while it draws an Icon for each bootable Volume, choose the Recovery_HD, choose proceed arrow, and use Disk Utility to erase the drive and create GUID partition Map, 1 partition, Mac OS X Extended (journaled). Then install Mac OS X by download.

My macbook pro 2011 does not come with a recovery disc or any disc at all, my hard drive recently failed and i have no backup. i have replaced the hard drive but don't know how to install the operating system on the new hard drive.

If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer, connect the computer to the Internet and start it up with the Option, Command, and R keys held down. You'll be able to install an OS.
If it shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier and wasn't upgraded to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, phone AppleCare and order the disks.

My hard drive crashed and I need to install the OS in the new hard drive. The laptop came with windows 8 already installed. I can't recover anything from the old hard drive. There were no windows 8 back up disc or boot up disc with laptop. I purchased it new about 1.5 years.

You will need full Model number and Serial number to order Recovery Media. Both usually on a label under the battery.

How to install on new hard drive

I have a macbook pro 13' mid 2012. I just replacedthe internal hard drive and don't know how to install the osx. I tried partitioning the hard drive to have a GUID map scheme but it got stuck on the connecting with disk step (dont remember what its called), about 50% in. I exited disk utility and then repeated this again but this time it got stuck on preparing to partition. I tried to remove the partitions and now its stuck on preparing to remove partition. What do I do? I cant install without formatting first.

Where did you get that disk drive?
It certainly doesn't sound like it is very good.
I would be checking to find out if you can exchange it for a replacement.

How to install a new hard drive

I can't find any instructions in my manual or by searching the forums. Is it easy enough to swap out a dead HD with a new one or do I need to leave this to the pros? It's certainly easy enough on my G4 tower but I know the iBook will be different.

The iBook is the most difficult Apple laptop in which to swap out a drive, but it can be done with a great deal of care, patience, concentration persistence and skill with simple tools. It will take 30 minutes to an hour to open and about the same to close. Unfortunately you do not tell us which iBook G4 you have. Go to iFixit Guides, locate your computer and click on it, select replace HDD in the sidebar for step by step directions. I will post some additional tips below.
Your computer will support a 2.5" ATA/IDE HDD up to 250 GB. For a list of available HDDs for your computer, please post back and ask.
Here are few tips you may find helpful:
• Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
• Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 8 screw driver is critical.
• Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I printed out the pages of each step in which screws were removed. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
• Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
• Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
• Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board, disable your optical HDD or worse.

You can download Carbon Copy Cloner - install your new hard drive in a external usb enclosure (around $10) and clone fromt here then test it before you install it in your Macbook.
Once you've done the swap, you can install your old hard drive in the USB enclosure and use it as a backup drive.

I'm trying to install a new hard drive on my Touchsmart but the recovery disks won't boot.

The Touchsmart 300-1120 is only 1.5 years old and it's hard drive is already fried. I bought a new hard drive, ordered the recovery disks, and it still won't boot. I've changed the boot order to go from the CD drive first, but all it does is click and then give the same error message it gave when the fired hard drive was in. I checked the diagnostic, and it can see the new hard drive...it just won't boot.

Are you able to beg or borrow access to another Mac that has access to the internet & is new enough to use the App store?
You can sign in to your App store account & download the appropriate installer (Mavericks or whatever you have in your account). Then you can make a USB bootable copy of the installer (there are many other guides around)…

If you can access a Mac but don't want to do the huge download you can use the recovery assistant to create a bootable recovery partition on a USB stick.

When you boot your Mac it will download the OS for installation.
Does the original HD still work? It may be quicker to get a cheap 2.5inch case & boot from that just to get an OS downloaded & installed. It will mean you are not wasting cash & time on 10.6 that is only needed for one App store download.
I'd consider a trip to an Apple store if you have one local, they may drop an installer or recovery partition onto a memory stick for you.

I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
It was Ram for me..

You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance
