How to install actions in PSE 9

Hi! I have just downloaded some free PS actions in the *.apn format. Does anybody know how to install them in PSE 9? There is no option "operations" in the window tab, so I cannot mark the actions menu to be visible. Where is it? How to use (=> get access to) them later, once they're installed? Thanks a lot! Anna

What actions are you looking to install. There are two types.
(1) Actions which work from the effects panel. You need an ATN file and a PNG thumbnail and they get installed here:
Windows Start Button >Computer >OS (C:) >Program Data >Adobe >Photoshop Elements >9.0 >Photo Creations >Photo Effects
(2) Actions which use the actions player. You install the ATN file in the actions folder inside Workflow Panels following the instructions from whichever site you got the download. Click image to enlarge for file path (substitute PSE9 for 10 in the file path).
N.B. Program Data is different to Program Files.
If you can’t see Program Data, you will need to change the system settings before you start. Go to Start >Control Panel >Classic View >Folder Options
Then select Show Hidden Files & Folders.

  • Installing Actions in PSE 9.0

    This is probably something simple... but how do you install actions in PSE 9.0?  I have Windows 7.0 Enterprise, 64 bit.  Particularly, I am trying to Install Pioneer Woman's Actions.  Thanks for your help.

    The directions on the following page should help.
    Just substitute pse9 where it says pse8.

  • Installing Actions in PSE 9 Downloaded from App Store

    Hi everyone,
    I'm seeing quite a few folks who downloaded PSE 9 from Mac's app store that can't install actions into PSE.  I've connected to their computers, unhid hidden folders, and looked for the navigation path I would have expected.  That doesn't work.  I ran searches for the native Elements actions like Blizzard and couldn't find them.
    Nothing works.  Any ideas?
    At first I thought this was a Lion issue, but it appears that the App Store is the common theme.  I know the App Store version doesn't have the Organizer, but I was under the impressions that it was the same other than that.
    Thanks!

    Hey guys, thanks so much for your time!
    I've seen it on Lion - a brand new install on a brand new computer and I've seen it on 10.6.7, which is not, I think, Lion.
    Mtstuner, I tried all but one of the suggestions on those links you sent.  Even revealling the hidden files in the Library didn't do it.  But I'll try the last suggestion regardless.  If I could just find where Blizzard and the other native ATNs are stored, I'd be good.
    I even tried that scary typing in the Mac terminal thing.  Never have done that before.  It did reveal hidden files, but not the ones I'm looking for.
    I think it has something to do with the App version.  Without the Organizer, I would expect the file structure to be different.  However, I wouldn't expect it to be so different that I can't find the files anywhere.  I've been able to find them on a million (or so) different computers/versions of PSE/operating systems.  But this is the first time I've ever tried on an App.
    I'm going to reconnect with one of these folks who is having issues tomorrow to see if there is anything else I can try.  I'll report back if I get any more helpful info.  I'm leaving on a vacation tonight, but this has really picqued my curiosity!
    Thanks again for the help!

  • Installing Actions in PSE 9/ folders under Locale do not exist ???

    I am trying to intall some actions under C>Programs x86>Adobe>PSE9>Locale>en_US>WorkFlow Panels>Actions but Workflow Panels and Actions do not show when I navigate through C: drive--
    I have created new folders and named them accordingly and placed the Actions I want to install in the new Actions folder to no avail.
    I went to Folder Options and checked the Show Hidden Files /folders in the hope that the system would reveal the missing folders but to no avail.
    I am running Win 7 64-bit.
    Any ideas as to how to install the actions will be appreciated!  Many thanks.

    Remove those folders you created, since you're in the wrong place. Actions go in C:\ProgramData\Adobe, etc. Try that (with hidden file viewing enabled) and you should see the whole path.

  • Can't install actions in PSE 9

    I've been using PSE9 for three years with no issues but recently, I found I could not load any more actions. I follow the instructions to install them (which I've done many times over the past three years) and while the actions show up in the appropriate folders, when I actually open PSE9, they aren't there. According to other advice I read, I completely uninstalled PSE9 from my system and then reinstalled but I'm having the same issue. I contacted Adobe Care via Twitter and they have yet to figure it out but told me to post the issue here so that's what I'm doing.

    I suppose it's possible the particular actions set you have doesn't provide all the files necessary for Elements to add an icon to the Effects panel...
    There need to be 3 related files per action:  An .atn, .metadata.xml, and .png file.
    The .metadata.xml file doesn't have to be particularly complex, but it has to be accurate.  One of mine looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <PSEContent xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/PSEContent/2.0/">
      <subscription value="$19.95" />
      <name value="$$$/content/filters/BWtoHaFalseColorBlackSpace=BW to Ha False Color Black Space" />
      <type value="filter" />
      <category value="$$$/content/category/type/AstronomyToolsv1_6=Astronomy Tools 1.6" />
    </PSEContent>
    If it's commercial software that you don't own the copyright for, you shouldn't feel comfortable with posting such content publicly.  But you could compare to what I'm showing above.

  • HELP!!!  I am trying to install actions into pse 13, which I have done several times before and I can't find my media database.db3 file to delete to get them to load.  I have totally uninstalled pse13 and reinstalled and still having the same problem.  I

    Anyone?

    Are you aware that you can just load them into the actions panel by going to window>actions, then clicking the four lined square on the panel and choosing Load Actions from the menu? You don't have to put them into the effects panel anymore and there's no deleting mediaDatabase.db3 that way.
    If you really need them in the effects panel for some reason (like for add-on tools) you are probably not finding the right  library. The library at the top level of your hard drive isn't exactly hidden in recent versions of OS X, but it's very hard to get to it. The easiest way is to go to the finder preferences>sidebar and turn on Show Hard Disks. Then when you open a new finder window your hard drive will be in the list on the left side of the window. Click it and the library you want will be at the top level of results on the right side. But the actions panel is much easier.

  • Help with installing actions PSE9 on Mac

    Hi everyone! Thank goodness for support forums! I've been searching all over this afternoon to see if I could just install some simple presets in PSE9--I just got it and installed it on OSX 10.6.
    I just can't figure out how to install actions. I've tried a number of things and it seems pretty simple but for some reason nothing is working (and yes, I've restarted PSE, multiple times in fact).
    At first I was told to go to Library > Application Support > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. The only file in there is "Presets" which I opened and there was a list of different files for different stuff (such as patterns and gradients). I thought it looked relatively easy because there's an empty folder in there called "Actions" into which I dragged my actions files. That didn't work, so I tried including the 64 x 64 png image with it, still no luck. Another place said that you should go to Applications > Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 > Locales > en_US and there would be a file called Mediadatabase.db3 that I'd have to edit the file name--I don't have that file in there and it's nowhere to be found on my computer.
    So long story short, whichever method I try, actions still won't work/show up! I'd really appreciate any help on this. Thanks in advance!

    For the first file path, it sounds like you are in the wrong library. You have three library files:
    Your username>library
    System>library
    and the one at the top level of your hardrive. You want the last one.
    Mediadatabase.db3 is in there too.

  • How to add actions to Elements 10

    How does one add actions to elements 10? I have access to some PS action files but the help file does not explain how to add them to Elements. Helps says to Click Add on the Actions panel, but there is no where "add" option.

  • Actions for PSE 10 for Mac?

    Help for installing actions for PSE 10 on Mac?

    The path says finder, library, application support, adobe, PSE 10, Photo creations but this is where my mac differs.  My only option after PSE 10 is presets.  Under presets I tried pasting the actions in the actions folder and then opening my PSE 10 but this didn't work.  Any ideas?

  • PSE 6 for Mac, how to install the new layer mask tool

    I just bought the new PSE 6 for Mac, whew what a change in the color of workspace.
    My classmates and I are wondering how to install the free layer mask tool that Sue Chastain has on her About site.
    Or perhaps first, has anyone used it and do you like it?
    Do you put it here?

    Havent been to this great forum for a while, been busy, I miss you all, and shall try to visit more often.
    I remember when I was a beginner at this, I learned so much here and you all were amazing help!
    Thanks,
    Jane

    Hi Barbara,
    Its this one,
    http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pselements/p/layermasks.htm
    So I assumed afterwards that it wasn't for Mac. So I went ahead and installed the older action for my PSE 4.
    I was hoping it was platform agnostic, but when I looked at this, the difference between the 2 versions,
    http://www.jcarter.net/mac-stuff/previewfolder-missing.jpg
    Not knowing where the Previews folder was, threw me overboard.
    And I didn't read all the way down Sue's page, as my old brain got ahead of my eyes.
    So I really dont know what to do next with this, some of my classmates are wondering the same thing.
    Thank you,
    Jane

  • Installing Third Party Actions in PSE 7

    I have figured out a way to add third party actions to PSE 7.<br /><br />It is similar to PSE 6, byt now all the files are in one directory, and they have changed the format of the XML files.<br /><br />Any suggestions or comments on how to improve the process would be greatly appreciated!<br /><br />To add third party Actions to Adobe's Photoshop Elements 7, you need four files:<br />    The Action file, which ends with a .atn<br />    A PNG icon for the action<br />    A JPG icon for the action<br />    A xml file for the action<br />    <br />Assuming your action name is "Sample Action.atn", you will need:<br />    Sample Action.atn<br />    Sample Action.png<br />    Sample Action.jpg<br />    Sample Action.metadata.xml<br />    <br />The xml file has the following format:<br /><br />    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><br />    <PSEContent xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/PSEContent/2.0/"><br />        <subscription value="free" /><br />        <name value="$$$/content/photoeffects/NAME-NO-SPACE=NAME" /><br />        <type value="effect" /><br />        <category value="$$$/content/category/type/CATEGORY-NO-SPACE=CATEGORY" /><br />    </PSEContent><br />   <br />So, if we wanted our sample action to be in a category called "3rd Party Actions", we <br />would have a xml files that looks like the following:<br /><br />    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><br />    <PSEContent xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/PSEContent/2.0/"><br />        <subscription value="free" /><br />        <name value="$$$/content/photoeffects/SampleAction=Sample Action" /><br />        <type value="effect" /><br />        <category value="$$$/content/category/type/3rdPartyActions=3rd Party Actions" /><br />    </PSEContent><br /><br />Copy all four files to the following directory<br /><br />XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Photo Creations\photo effects<br />Vista: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Photo Creations\photo effects<br />MAC: [system drive]:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Photoshop Elements:7.0:Photo Creations:photo effects<br /><br />NOTE: I have not tested the Vista and MAC systems, so the directories MAY be different there<br /><br />You now need to force PSE to rebuild it's database of effects. You do this by deleting<br />or renaming the following files:<br /><br />XP:<br />C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\ThumbDatabase.db3<br />C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Locale\en_US\MediaDatabase.db3<br /><br />Vista:<br />C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\ThumbDatabase.db3<br />C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Locale\en_US\MediaDatabase.db3<br /><br />MAC:<br />[system drive]:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Photoshop Elements:7.0:ThumbDatabase.db3<br />[system drive]:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Photoshop Elements:7.0:Locale:en_US:MediaDatabase.db3<br /><br />NOTE: I have not tested the Vista and MAC systems, so the directories MAY be different there<br /><br />Start up the PSE 7 Editor. You sill see a progress bar as the effects databases are rebuilt.<br /><br />Once the databases have been rebuilt, you will find your new category in the Effects pallette under Photo Effects, or under <br />the "All" section.

    A minor update to the discussion. After more experimenting, I have changed the XML description.<br /><br />Assume we have the following files:<br />sampleaction.atn<br />sampleaction.png<br />sampleaction.jpg<br />sampleaction.metadata.xml<br /><br />The xml file has the following format:<br /><br /><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><br /><PSEContent xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/PSEContent/2.0/"><br /><subscription value="free" /><br /><name value="$$$/content/photoeffects/FILE-NAME=DISPLAY-NAME" /><br /><type value="effect" /><br /><category value="$$$/content/category/type/CATEGORY-NO-SPACE=CATEGORY" /><br /></PSEContent><br /><br />Where:<br />FILE-NAME is the name of the .atn file, without the .atn<br />DISPLAY-NAME is the name you want displayed in the PSE 7 Effects Palette<br />CATEGORY-NO-SPACE is the category name for the effect without spaces<br />CATEGORY is the Category name you want the effect listed under<br /><br />So, if we wanted our sample action to be in a category called "3rd Party Actions", we<br />would have a xml files that looks like the following:<br /><br /><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><br /><PSEContent xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/PSEContent/2.0/"><br /><subscription value="free" /><br /><name value="$$$/content/photoeffects/sampleaction=Sample Action" /><br /><type value="effect" /><br /><category value="$$$/content/category/type/3rdPartyActions=3rd Party Actions" /><br /></PSEContent>
