How to Install DBD::mysql on Mac OSX 10.4.7 SERVER Universal

I spent 3 days trying to figure out how to install DBD::mysql on OSX 10.4.7 Server Universal on my Mac Pro.
I didn't think it would be so hard just to get it installed so I could use Movable Type. Yikes!
Anyway, I wrote up a tutorial on what I did to get it installed. Hopefully it will help you out if you are having problems installing DBD::mysql on Server 10.4.7 Universal with a Mac Pro.
DISCLAIMER: I cannot say whether or not this will work with any other version of Server or Macintosh. Inside the article below is a link to how to install DBD::mysql on other versions of OSX that may or may not work for you.

Searching the Mac for 'mysql.pm' anywhere came up empty, so I assumed that Lion had wiped out my DBD::mysql installation. So I tried to re-install it using CPAN. After finding the necessary files, it ended badly:

The first problem seems to be "Can't exec 'make'", and when I enter "which make", I get nothing. Wasn't 'make' included with the previous version of OS X? I don't recall installing it myself, and I'm not sure where to begin here.

Update: I located 'make' in Developer/usr/bin and added that to my path. Now the attempt to install DBD::mysql ends slightly differently:

According to Mactracker, given the size of the screen and the CPU speed your MBP could be one of these models:
- MacBookPro5,1, which originally shipped with OS X 10.5.5
- MacBookPro5,3, which originally shipped with OS X 10.5.7
Since they originally shipped with OS X 10.5, the system disc that came with your MBP may have 10.5 on it. If so, you should be able to do a reinstall from the original disc. If you do a full backup to another volume before you do that, you can recover your data from the backup to your MBP. However, some migrating some of the data (such as Mail messages) may be tricky due to format changes.

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.

Installing DBD::mysql on a 10.3.9 server

Finally got it to work, though it might be an overkill. Had to go about it, the long way
1) First installed the new perl (5.8.7, eat your heart out tiger), using the perl distribution was a breeze. Then reinstalled all the modules that were previously installed. (Don't forget to install xcode first, I had a broken installation and gave some trouble).

The nice part is that 5.8.7 took over the old version without much ado.
2) Installed the new PHP (the distribution by entropy, great job on behave of the mac community by Marc Liyanage. http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/)
Had to do a couple of changes as described by Marc, but not a major problem.
3) Install DBI
4) Couldn't get beyond the errors when installing DBD::mysql (strange that being an apple distribution it had trouble with directories and 386!), so I had to install the new MySQL (from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/). This was a bit trickier, since it still the old files take precedence. Use this command:
perl Makefile.PL --libs="`/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config --libs`" --cflags="`/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config --cflags`" --testuser=root --testpassword=**** or what ever path you have. Don't forget to d/l the cool admin tool as well.
Guess just have to upgrade apache and would be a totally updated server (at least on the web part).

The makefiles don't always put things in the exact same place that Apple does. I'm afraid I don't have anything that old to test on or give you any more specific advice, but you should generally make sure you're duplicating the stock installation as closely as possible if you want things to work the way they used to.

That is correct Das_Sad. CS2 will not run on Intel based processors under Mac OS. You will need to find a Mac computer with a PowerPC processor if you wish to run Creative Suite 2.

An external drive is not necessary. There are several options.
One is Parallels
Second is VMware
Third. Partition the hard drive using Boot Camp
Boot Camp Assistant is pre installed on your Mac in your Applications > Utilities folder.
If you use Boot Camp, you will need to purchase a Windows install disc.

Why mess with this? Well, I got the HDDs and the enclosure from my previous PPC, so I'd like to make use of it all without $pending again.
I don't see any problems with using the card and drives on your new Mac. Hardware is too pricey to just leave behind if you can't help it. With the new drivers I suspect you'll be able to use your drives, I just don't think you'll be able to boot from them if the interface card requires drivers. They should still be very fast storage devices, and probably reliable due to the ongoing support the vendor has provided.
I went through the same type of issue when I bought my Dual G4 1.42 Tower (upgraded from a Quadra 840AV ). Several of my devices were SCSI (I was into SCSI Wide/Fast drive arrays at the time for video capture), and I was able to use an Adaptec card for scanning for several years with Jaguar and Panther. I'd spent quite a bit of cash to ensure high quality and performance and didn't want to loose all of the investment. Eventually the SATA hard drives and other USB and Firewire replacements became so cheap and performance improved enough that loosing SCSI with Tiger was not a big deal. I do think I should get about 5 years of hardware compatibility with most products and I keep older Mac's around for dedicated services as long as they aren't a costly maintenance issue.
