HOW to install fonts from rpm/tar.gz (ec-fonts-mftraced)

Hey all.
I'm trying to install a music program called Lilypond, for my girlfriend, as an example of how easy (heh) linux is to use.
Now, to use this particular version, I need to install some fonts. ec-fonts-mftraced, to be exact.
The Lilypond site provides downloads for the fonts here
There is an rpm, deb, and tar.gz version, none of which I've managed to install from. I've tried using
rpmunpack | gzip -d | cpio -uid
as (kind of) per the instructions:
EC-FONTS-MFTRACED
GNU LilyPond 2.3.x needs TeX (if you are using the TeX backend) and
PostScript Type1 PFA/PFB fonts with full internationalisation support.
By default, LilyPond uses the ec* family.
INSTALLING EC FONTS
The binany RPM and DEB packages should be installable on any RPM or
DEB based system.
If you do not have such a system, install either
* the RPM, like so
rpm2cpio ec-fonts-mftraced-1.0.2-1.noarch.rpm | cpio -uid
mktexlsr
* or the DEB,
ar p ec-fonts-mftraced_1.0.2-1_all.deb data.tar.gz | tar zxf -
mktexlsr
BUILDING FROM SOURCE
cvs -d :ext:[email protected]:/cvsroot/lilypond co sauter-fonts-mtraced
cd sauter-fonts-mtraced
make all install
mktexlsr
I can't get anything to work though, nor can I install the fonts thru KDE control centre.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
Much appreciated,
Thom.

You need t1utils (an easy compile), potrace (or autotrace), tetex, and python so you can compile mftrace.
mftrace PKGBUILD is at the bottom of http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=6450
Then you need to:
cd /usr/share/mftrace/
import filelib
Here's the PKGBUILD for ec-fonts-mftraced:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=6451
Fontforge I think helps it compile faster (??)
All of the above-mentioned packages that aren't available via pacman have been uploaded to ftp.archlinux.org/incoming

    Hola a todos:

PD. Como instalo fuentes (fuentes presentes en la verrsión anterior) para la nueva versión?

Yes Pages 5 is very different and has many features and templates missing.
You do not install fonts in Pages, you install them in the System. Purchase/Download them and double click on them to install.
The manual for Pages 5 is online. Click on the link under the Help menu.

  • Help! forgot how to install fonts

I forgot how to install fonts in 10.3.9. Using Fontbook 1.0.2. The Help files tell me to open Fontbook>File>install. My Version shows File>add fonts. Doesn't do it. Can I still drag fonts to closed fonts folder?
Since the fonts were sent e-mail by a client to use on the job, unzipping gave me little black screen icons (look like little, tiny gray screens with OSX in the corner). Is this why they won't work? Did zipping them corrupt them?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    astromonkey

    hi,
i had this same scenario before.
unzipping gave you little black screen icons? you can try adding extensions to their file names like the usual fonts.
or do they have 0kb size? if then, something went wrong in the zipping process.
    hope this helps

how to install software from imac to macbook pro

Are you using one of the newer iMac's with no DVD drive? If so, you can either get an external CD/DVD drive (any make - doesn't have to be Apple) or, if you have another Mac on the same network that has a CD/DVD drive you may be able to do it by turning on 'DVD or CD Sharing' on that Mac (System Preferences>Sharing). Hopefully you'll see the disk on the Mac without the DVD drive and be able to install from there.

  • How do install Leopard from intel to ppc by Firewire?

Can anyone tell me how to install Leopard from my intel macbook to my older ppc? When I try to install from firewire it says that the drive is going to GUID and non-bootable. My DVD drive on the PPC isn't good enough for the Leopard DVD. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm not commenting on whether the type of Mac is compatible with the Leopard install.
I'll offer suggestion for the firewire install. The objective is to take the Leopard DVD and transfer in some way to a firewire drive to be able to boot a PPC Mac and complete a Leopard install to the PPC Mac.
How? Take a firewire external drive and partition it in two. One for your data and the other (7.2 gigs) max, for the ability to restore the Leopard DVD to that smaller partition. Once restored you'll be able to boot(using system startup control panel) and install Leopard to a PPC Mac.
The rule to follow is to use APM ie Apple Partition Map to boot PPC Macs. GUID mapping is for intel Macs. You use options within Disk Utility ti select which way to go. You cannot have both on one firewire hard drive. I use two firewire hard drives: one APM and the other GUID.
How to setup the small partition? Connect firewire drive to your PPC Mac. Open disk utility. Create your two partitions(remember when you do this the drive is formatted and all data is gone, so backup first). Remember to use option and select APM, although on a PPC Mac it should be by default and ditto if on an intel Mac for GUID. Once the partitioning is complete, select Restore and while using the left hand column(just read the instruction in the disk utility window) and assuming you now have the Leopard DVD on the desktop , drag the install OSX section from the left hand column to "source" and then drag the Leopard small partition from the left hand column to "destination." Wait 20 minutes and you are completed. Now you can boot from the firewire drive and install Leopard to a PPC Mac.

  • How to install fonts from CS3 into CS5?

At work I often need the font DIN which was installed with our version CS3. At home I have CS5 and I do not know how to install the needed fonts. I packed the relevant file with the fonts and other links into a directory but how can I install the fonts at my personal computer using Windows. When using a Mac it was quite easy to install the font, I just click at the font within the directory "fonts" and with another click on "install" I got the font. My PC however asks me which programme I want the file to open with - but which one should it be? It can't be Word, Photoshop, IrfanView or whatever. So what do I do? Can anybody please help me?

Well.. there are many different kinds of font files out there. Some of them advertise the type of font in the filename, e.g.
    DINBold.otf
    DINBold.ttf
    DINBold.pfm
    DIN.dfont
    DIN.ttc
    and so on.
Others, typically Mac fonts, don't have a file extension that tells us what kind of file it is. Of those Mac fonts, there's one kind that you can't use on Windows at all, because when you look at it in Windows the size is zero kilobytes. The fact that, at some point in the past, you moved a file from Mac to Windows without font problems does not make a platform-compatibility problem any more or less likely - perhaps it was all set in fonts you already had installed at home. The fact that right now it doesn't work in the Document Fonts folder makes me believe that you may have a Mac font resource fork problem - that's what would make the filesize 0k. If your fonts don't have file extensions (or if you have file extensions hidden by Windows, which is the way Win7 works by default) then you can't really know what kind of font file it is. Looking at the Properties of the font file will tell you, though.
Lastly: since you don't own an (extra) license for the font, you'd be ripping off the font developers by installing it on your home computer, although obviously not intentionally.

1-Windows puts fonts in a common fonts folder... which makes the fonts available to ALL software... at least if they are "correct" fonts (such as TrueType)

  • How to install fonts in indesign cs5 mac

My designer sent me some fonts for a document they created for me, but I have been unable to figure out how to install the fonts. Google search and adobe search and still I am not able to figure this out. I am using macintosh os 10.64.
    Can someone provide any guidance?

If you've already searched Google for something like "install fonts on mac 10.6" and have followed the instructions on the first link (under "Locations where fonts can be stored") then you'll have to post more details for us to help you. For example:
Which fonts are they? (Not all fonts can be used by a Mac, like Type 1 fonts for Windows. Give us the complete name of the font, hopefully with a file extension.)
How do you know they are missing? (Sure, when you open up the document it gives you a missing font warning, but it might just be a font naming problem, like InDesign is looking for "Helvetica Neue LE Regular" and your font is called "Helvetica Neue Regular." You can use Find Font under the Type menu to find & replace if necessary. If you don't see the missing font warning when you open the file, how do you know the fonts are missing?)
Where have you tried to install them? (There's quite a few places to install a font on a Mac; have you tried any of them? It's worth pointing out that installing multiple copies of fonts in multiple locations can cause fonts to not be read in some circumstances.)
What version of InDesign are you using? (If it's CS5 and there's a "Document Fonts" folder in the same folder as the InDesign document you're trying to open, then InDesign is supposed to be able to read them, but sometimes it borks up and you have to move or delete the Document Fonts folder in order to get it to work.)
and there are other minor possibilities like
What languages are the fonts supposed to support? (InDesign puts its Chinese, Arabic etc. fonts all the way at the bottom of its window)
    and
Are you sure that the fonts aren't damaged? (What size are the files? Are they still in a zipped folder? Maybe they were broken when you downloaded them from your email.)
    et cetera
