How to install from Tiger DVD on Lombard with CD drive

I've installed Jaguar on a G3 Powerbook Lombard, and downloaded XPostFacto 4. I want to install Tiger, but I only have the DVD version, and there is only a CD drive in the computer. Can I install Tiger from a networked DVD drive, or is there another option?
tim

There has been at least one report of success using an external USB 1.1 DVD drive to start up the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD on a clamshell iBook
Okay, it seems that the DVD will boot from a USB DVD drive after setting the Boot Disk to the USB drive.
However, running XPostFacto returns a "XPostFacto does not work with this model: Powerbook 1,1" (1,1 referring to Lombard). I've also searched around the XPF forums with little luck. Tiger will also not natively install on a Lombard, but I found this article that details a OSInstall.dist code change to allow Tiger to install.

I may try this later, and post back with results. For now, I'll be running 10.2.

  • Trying a G4 Install from Tiger DVD...oops...no DVD drive!!

I bought a cheap used g4 single processor (1.33) to use only for the NAT/VPN/DHCP/DNS/Firewall (all the Gateway stuff). I have a dual 2.3 G5 for the APF, OD and other big stuff. G4 came with Jag. I bought a copy of Tiger 10 user on ebay. Came. Looks good.
Well I didn't notice that the G4 only has the CD drive and of course Tiger comes on a DVD so that install went real good. What are my options here? Install a DVD drive? (Recommend a supplier please). Will Apple get me a CD version on the same SN somehow? Burn several CD's in some fashion from the DVD that can then feed the G4? (Care to tell me how to do that?) Plug in a firewire DVD drive? (will it boot from there?). I hadn't expected this problem and I don't see anything posted on how to fix it. Many thanks in advance....

    Wes-
I think you have a couple of options.
First is to install an internal DVD drive in place of the CD drive. That is a fairly simple procedure for a guy like yourself. I do not know exactly which model is compatible, but a place like OWC or other reseller will have what you need. I have succesfully done this myself.
Second is to use an extenal FW drive. The model really shouldn't matter, but maybe you could find out more in the G4 forums. I am pretty sure that even if it won't boot from the external drive initially, you can boot up the G4 and select that drive as the boot drive and then restart. I am a little shakey on that one though.
Third is to use the server (almost forgot about that thing) to install the software over the network onto the G4. I know, another thing to figure out, but my guess is that it will be a fairly simple thing to do. You could just set up a mini-network and do it that way.
    Luck-

  • Re-installing from tiger DVD onto leopard?

    hello,
garageband came pre-installed on my macbook with tiger. i've since upgraded to leopard. now i want to do a clean (re-)install of leopard.
after re-installing leopard, can i insert the "additional software" DVD that came with tiger, to re-install garageband? would there be any compatibility issue?
    thanks.

    No, that should be fine.
However, a Leopard installation should leave GB unchanged, so if you don't have a specific reason to re-install GB, why would you do it?

  • Comic Life, OmniOutliner, FreeVerse Games - how to install from Tiger?

These applications (along with some trials I do not need) were bundled with Tiger that came loaded on my laptop. I actually liked and used these applications.
The bundled applications loader does not mention these (only iLife and the Trials). How to I install these application on my fresh install of Leopard?
    Thanks.

The applications (mentioned above) that came loaded on my MBP (Tiger) are not on the Tiger installation disks? They are now lost forever as my Leopard needed upgrade did not work well and Apple support asked me to do fresh install?
They do NOT come preloaded on any MacBook Pro, except possibly a used or refurbished one where someone loaded them as a "favor". If you got them on a MacBook Pro that was new, it was purely by mistake, as the specs never show the MacBook Pro as ever coming with those applications. Only the iMac did.
They never came with Tiger nor with Leopard retail.
The MacBook Pro installation discs only include iLife in addition to what was found in Mac OS X retail and several 30 day demo applications.
Fresh install is not a Mac OS X installation option:

An erase and install means you can only restore iLife from the original installation disks, or iLife retail if you need to install Leopard. iTunes comes with Leopard retail as well. For different portions of iLife which came with various versions of Mac OS X retail:

  • PowerBook 17 crashes consistently, even when booted from Tiger DVD

We have a new PowerBook 17 that has started giving us problems in the last day or so. It will hang after running for a few minutes. This is a consistent problem - it doesn't go away for an hour, or a day - if the machine is running, it will hang. There is no kernel panic, no dialogue box, the trackpad, mouse, etc. simply stop responding (the clock freezes too, so I know the system is hanging up - not just input devices).
I've managed to run throught most of the normal trouble-shooting methods, I say "managed" because the machine froze when I was booting into single user mode. So I went to the Tiger DVD that shipped with the laptop. Upon getting to the language selection dialog box - it froze again (no mouse, keyboard activity, etc.). Eventually, the machine did boot from the startup DVD - and I ran disk utility. Of course it found no problems with permissions or the disk because this is apparently hardware related, no?
That being said, an archive and install will probably do us no good. But would Tech Tools (came with our AppleCare) manage to at least spot a Hardware issue? At this point, the only thing I haven't done is removed the third-party RAM we installed (which has been installed for nearly two weeks with no sign of conflict). That will be the next course of action and we'll run Tech Tools. Any ideas or suggestions regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated. We all know that being down one machine is not a good thing - thanks in advance for any assistance.
    PowerBook G4 17" 1.67 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.5) Might Mouse, 1.5 GB RAM, 100 GB HD

    David,
I always had a pristine system: no kernel panics, no system hangs. Then, one day I started to have kernel panics and hang ups and when I tried to install XCode it failed, then I couldn't install iWork '06. At first I thought it was a problem with the disk until I decided to run Apple's hardware test. After all, it was just a problem with one of the 512MBs memory DIMMs. Removed the offending DIMM and everything went back to normal.
So, I think you should try the hardware test. To do this just start up from the original installation disk while pressing the option key and then choose Apple Hardware Test from the available startup disks.

  • Moving iLife 08 install from one machine to another (with a twist)

Greetings. I have a complete backup of all the files from an iMac I recently sold. I had purchased a single user version of iLife 08 which is what is on the backup. Before selling the iMac, I reformatted the drive and put iLife 06 and Tiger back on it, keeping the iLife 08 update for myself.
I have misplaced my iLife 08 program disk. It was the single user retail SKU of iLife 08 upgrade. I do have a complete backup from a PPC-based iMac that it had been installed on. I know the iLife 08 applications are universal since by trial and error I moved one app over to my new machine manually from the backup.
I have a MacBook that originally shipped with Tiger. I bought a single user update to Leopard and installed that using erase and install. All good so far. Of course, this wiped out the iLife 06 that had been on the MacBook w/Tiger, but I have a backup of it. I also have the backup of my iLife 08. Both the Leopard and iLife 08 are legal copies obtained at retail. I have the leopard DVD but can't find ilife 08.
I am sure I can somehow handpick the files from the iMac backup to put iLife 08 onto the Leopard-powered MacBook. I've already spend hours looking for the DVD but in the process of moving and just can't find it. So my question is the following:
What directories do I need to copy from my backup to bring iLife 08 to life on the MacBook? I moved GarageBand over and by watching error messages figured out what to move, but would rather not go through this for all the apps!
I am a loyal Mac user with quite a collection including iMacs, Minis, MacBook, had a couple of MacBook pros, and I've even got two XServes in production! I am evaluating Leopard and iLife 08 for use across the board. So far having some challenges with Leopard and web development tools preventing me from upgrading across the board. But for now this one MacBook will be my Leopard test bed.
Help or links to places with this info appreciated. I will keep looking for that darned DVD in the meantime.

yeh true the firewire drive doesnt need to be involved in the story at all... the only reason it is because I already backup my MBP to a firewire drive anyway - so I already have the new system/apps on that FW drive.
I already have my mac pro's current system drive backed up to yet another FW drive, so yea if it does all go wrong I dont even need to do an archive and install, I can directly boot from the old FW drive.
"This should work ok. I have a system on a firewire drive, and I can use it to boot up computer A or to boot up computer B, no problem. They are very different computers. So the same system can start up two very different computers."
Thats very reassuring. If Apple does not disencourage that type of usage then I guess that answers my question. I dont know much about the internal workings of OSX, but was concerned that maybe when installing from the DVDs only the relevant drivers or kernel or something would be installed - etc especially regarding 2core MBP vs. 8core mac pro (it would still work when copying over the system, but not fully optimally) - maybe what I said is total bullcr*p, I dunno! anyways, I will try and do some benchmarks etc and put it through some testing when I get some time - I have my old FW backup to fall back to so its cool...

I am pretty new to the apple world. Tried doing it through bootcamp but did not success.
I am not interested to install it through Parallels or Fusion. Plz guide.

OK, use Windows 8 in Bootcamp. Be aware that there are no Bootcamp drivers for Windows 8 yet. So you may experiance not only delays but display problems, freezing, crashes and other problems.
Here is the Bootcamp forum. Make sure you read all the posts from people experiencing Windows 8 problems with Bootcamp. https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp

Unfortunately, there are no recent versions of Firefox for MacOS X 10.3. You might have been using the ancient Firefox 2, last updated in December 2008, and no longer safe for browsing (too many security vulnerabilities to recommend).
The Camino browser is based on some of the same underpinnings as Firefox and was updated more recently, in March 2010. Maybe that's worth a try? http://caminobrowser.org/releases/1.6.11/
Hopefully you can find a more up-to-date version of Safari.

I want to create a HD disc with my Adobe Premier Elements but I am getting low resolution.  When I go to share the DVD to disc the form only offers 8pixels at the bottom.  How do I burn this DVD in HD with higher number of pixels?  I have read other forums on burning HD DVD's but I do not see the option to turn the 8 pi into 40 pi the one forum recommended.  I want my DVD to be HD so I may sell these videos online for my business.  I can't sell them the low quality they are burning now.  Hopefully you can help me.  Thanks.

    desalvom
    Thank you for your reply.
You cannot burn your high resolution video that you can view on your computer to an AVCHD on DVD disc
that will replay through a regular DVD player. But players are marketed under a variety of names with
different support opportunities. One manufacturer may call its product MultiMedia Player, media player, Blu-ray player,
etc.The bottom line is the specifications for each of the players that are candidates for the playback of
the AVCHD format on DVD disc or the format of interest.
If you upload your HD (1920 x 1080) video to YouTube, YouTube converts the video to flash format, but it goes up as the HD video.
But, beware. Look at the YouTube viewing setting when your uploaded video is playing back. The YouTube default is not
HD. It might be 360p, 480p. If you have a 1080p video, then before the YouTube playback, you should be looking
at the video with the YouTube 1080p HD setting for best viewing. That is a YouTube matter.
    Best results depend on you
    a. setting up the Premiere Elements project preset to match the properties of the source media. That means, if
you have 1080p source, you (manually) or the project (automatically) set the project preset at
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR [email protected]
or the PAL counterpart, depending on your region need.
    b. if you upload your video to YouTube using the Premiere Elements feature, there is a HD preset, but you cannot
customize it.....if you need customization, then you can export your Timeline to a file...in this example
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30 or PAL counterpart
and then customize the preset under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of that preset. In increase quality, you might look to increase
the Bitrate under Advanced Button/Video Tab settings - without compromising the file size.
Then you would upload that file to YouTube at the YouTube web site.
All of the above are factors that need looking into in order to determine the why for what you wrote
I have published a shortened advertisement video to YouTube- say 5 minutes-
    and it is low quality
Often SD video upscaled to HD can present poorly. But, you are dealing with a HD workflow so that should not be introduced into the matter. The setup of the project and
the properties of the source video are important, but let us start with the above and rule in or out those considerations first.
Thank you. As always, any clarification needed, please do not hesitate to ask.

(see FCP X)..
    good luck with apple dude..
Where is the Apple problem? I have CS4 and CS5 running perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro. Installed 5 after Lion upgrade. Worth every cent. Adobe did have some catching up to do with Lion but with the CS5.5 update all runs fine. But not yours. So it is a problem with the Lion OS? You say you have been with Adobe since 2005. So you would be aware of all the other issues that Adobe had catching up with past Oss in Mac and Windows then. They get it right, but it is up to them. It is not up to Apple, nor Microsoft for that matter, to run around and check that every software developer in the world is running their business properly.
And what has politics got to do with anything. Some people just have to blame Software for their poor Hardware maintainence of failure of the same.
<The only think I can really do is to go back on my old windows...give back this orrible lap top and ask for my money back!>
Great suggestion. You should go with that one, but good luck getting a refund.

If you have the Media you can use it to create a bootable USB key via boot camp assistant.
It will create the usb and has the option of pre-downlading the drivers and bootcamp utilities for windows.
It is pretty much all automated and quite simple.

    err = DAQmxCreateAIVoltageChan (taskH, "Dev1/ai0", "AI0", DAQmx_Val_Cfg_Default, -5.0, 5.0, DAQmx_Val_Volts, "");

How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive? I have a mid-2010 iMac with 1tb HD and would like to either replace the HD with SSD -or- add 256 or 400gb SSD to maybe the Optical Drive and use it as the boot drive. Is this possible with Model 11,2? i thought i\I'd read it was, but recently am reading my system is too old - OWC have SSD drives for newer models not Model 11,1 -or- 11,2

Any SATA SSD will work, whatever you are reading is incorrect.
You have 2 choices with this model-install the SSD in place of the HDD or the Superdrive.
If you are installing in place of Superdrive you will need some form of SSD Caddy-these can be found on the cheap at places like eBay, also OWC sell one called the DataDoubler.
    Guide:https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Dual+Hard+ Drive/8643
If installing in place of old HDD you will notice that the propietary Temperature Sensor will not fit on the new drive, you will need to replace this with a sensor such as this or this
You will also need a 3.5inch to 2.5inch drive adaptor such as this

If you still have doubts contact OWC as mentioned above, I would start deciding whether your Superdive is needed or if you want to swap out the HDD.
