How to install gnome 3 ?
I want to try gnome 3 ,but how to install it in Arch linux. Is there any tutorial? thanks

that is not the adequate instruction to get gnome 3 in arch. That only explains how to use jhbuild method and is not the arch way.

Hello,
I want to install Gnome-shell (gnome 3), without gnome-fallback. Then I use SLiM as login manager, and so I don't want gdm.
I don't want also its browser (I use Chrome), but I think this is in the extra package...

How to install gnome-font-viewer?
I can't find it in the repo's so what package do I need to install the gnome-font-viewer (btw, I'm using Xfce)? I was able to find an old version called "fontilus" on some forgotten FTP server, but that one conflicts with Nautilus o_O

I had to use the pacman -d option, as I didn't want to install all these dependencies that I'm probably never going to use anyway (gnome-panel, evolution-data-server, db4.1, libsoup, metacity, libgnomekbd, libxklavier). -

Last night I installed a core system of archlinux.
I searched the wiki and find a section describes how to install gnome.
But after I do like its describtion, gnome did not work, It prompt : cannot open display.
And when I typed "startx", it prompts" startx: cannot find command".
So I installed xorg:
pacman -S xorg
Then when I typed startx,it appeared a xterm system.
In the commandline prompt I typed "gnome-seseion", then it appeared a gnome system like this :

One, pacman -S gnome gnome-extra.
Two, pacman -S gamin and allow it to replace FAM.
Three, add hal gdm to your DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf, and remove fam if it's there.
Four, /etc/rc.d/hal restart && /etc/rc.d/gdm restart.
Five, profit.

I have just installed archlinux .5, but yet I don't understand how to get gnome up and running. I have mozilla working, but nothing else. Can anyone help?
I have started to get some gnome packages installed, but I don't know which ones to grab. Will updating pacman/coreutils and doing a system update make it so when I do "pacman -S gnome" it will install all the gnome packages? because currently "pacman -S gnome" does nothing.
I was also wondering how do I configure my system to run gnome when I go to initlevel 5?

Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]
I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?

Linux, Netscape 7.01 and java plug-in how to install?
I have J2SE v 1.4.1_01 SDK installed in /usr/java/ directory. Some days ago I installed Netscape 7.0.1 on my RedHat 8.0 Linux. Now if I try to run my simple html page which calls simple java applet, I get message to install proper plug-in. "OK" button directs me to SUN's page where I can download J2SE. But I have one.
I still don't know how to install plug-in. Trying to create symbolic link:
ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so
in /root/.netscape/plugins and /root/.netscape6/plugins does not resolve the problem. As You see I work as root.
My Mozilla 1.3a browser works fine. It has java plug-in installed.
I saw Netscape uses /root/.mozilla directory for storing some information rather then /root/.netscape.

I start Netscape by clicking on Netscape icon on my gnome desktop.
The icon has its file in /root/.gnome-desktop directory. File name is Netscape 7.01.desktop (like title under the icon). Line to launch executable has following contents:
Exec=/usr/local/netscape/netscape
I changed it to:
Exec=/usr/local/netscape/set_plugin_start_netscape.sh
and wrote set_plugin_start_netscape.sh file.
File /usr/local/netscape/set_plugin_start_netscape.sh has the following contents:
NPX_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns610
set |grep NPX > /root/diag.log
/usr/local/netscape/netscape
Second line is used for diagnostic purpose.
I closed all Netscape windows.
After launch of the icon /root/diag.log file is created and looks as follows:

If I start my html file (which calls java applet), Netscape still displays message:

How best to do that (i.e., with minimal performance degradation, and without affecting my package management)? Or is there another way to solve the general problem (running the F5 Network Access Plugin)? Why I ask:
My employer is giving me remote access via a SecurID token and the F5 Network Access Plugin (F5NAP). The latter is in fact a browser plugin, which seems to me an odd way to implement a VPN, but it's the only offered option. Unfortunately,
* the only browsers supported for linux are Firefox 3 and Firefox 8 (per [http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_apm/manuals/product/apm_compatibility_matrix_10_2_1.html this]--scroll to "Linux Operating Systems")
* my primary laptop runs LMDE (see above) with Iceweasel 13 (from the mozilla.debian.net repository), which I want to keep. (It's the uplevel browser, dammit !-)
So I first tried to install the F5NAP on my iceweasel, hoping it was sufficiently like the listed versions. I browsed to my employer's site, logged in using the token, and followed the link to install the plugin. Unfortunately, that failed: the xpi began running, but then quit with the message

The gnome-terminal tab from which I invoke the runner spews a bazillion "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" errors, but the plugin runs, and I can SSH normally (though more slowly) to servers on the VLAN from another terminal tab. -

[Super n00by Question]
When I install Fedora 15 on my ThinkPad T60, it goes on really smoothly with seemingly every service and feature enabled in Gnome that I want... power management, touch pad configuration WITH additional settings like double-swipe for scrolling, Gnome3 widgets for Bluetooth, Wireless, online state, etc.
All of this setup and ready to go.
So I began toying around with Arch, love that it is essentially Gentoo minus all the waiting, and eventually got around to installing gnome and gnome-extras. The desktop wasn't as clean or as function as the Fedora build of Gnome3 and I am having a hard time getting my bearings on which apps I'm missing to make them roughly equivalent.
I've been through the Gnome wiki page and it is brilliant, but there are still little touches like the touchpad configuration panel that I'm missing, I think the printer configuration was different and a few other things.
In general, I'm just curious what the right approach to getting my bearings here and moving forward would be. The easiest is "Well just use Fedora", certainly a valid option, but if I were in this for the education and wanted to get my Arch install setup like a Fedora one how would one go about doing that?
If this is too broad of a question (like I said, I don't have a good perspective on this) let me know and I'll ditch it and just go back to clawing forward one missing app at a time.Are you using a synaptics touchpad? Question about installing Gnome
Hey everyone. I'm currently a Ubuntu user planning on trying out Arch Linux after my exams are done (in 2 weeks ).
I understand that in order to install Gnome, i need to update pacman using the commands 'pacman -Syu' and 'pacman -Syy'. After this process i can install gnome by using the command 'pacman -S gnome gnome-extra'.
However, one thing that i couldn't find was whether or not this command will install the latest version of Gnome, which i believe is version 2.24.
One other general question i have is, how do i know which version the application i'm trying to install is when the commands are simply 'pacman -S [application name]'?

Use pacman -Ss [application name]. The second small 's' means search, so using pacman -Ss gnome would show you everything with 'gnome' in it's name. Among them is gnome-desktop, which shows as version 2.24.2-1

I've got Arch x86 running in the latest VirtualBox to limit the damage caused by my noobness.
I'm stuck with installing gnome. Specifically the step where gnome-session is called. I've not done the exec steps after that.
As a normal user:
gnome-session results in "WARNING **: Cannot open display"
startx results in "module vboxvideo not found"
As root:
gnome-session results in "WARNING **: Cannot open display"
startx launches X correctly
If I then run gnome-session from within X then it gives me some kind of hybrid interface. (See screenshot below)
As I understand the GNOME Arch wiki gnome-session should launch straight into gnome, regardless of user type. So how do I get rid of the vboxvideo not found? Please also explain what that hybrid interface is. Is it supposed to be like that?
Edit: Also, why does the behaviour differ between root & normal user?
The VBox guest additions appear to have installed correctly.

Mr Green for president! That starts Gnome correctly when launched from root.
Also added gdm to the daemons section of /etc/rc.conf as you suggested and now it boots straight into gdm/gnome. Awesome.

Namely, I now get past GRUB and am greated with a black screen that I seem to have no control over. I can't boot, can't type, can't add my user to a video group, nothing.
So, I have two questions:
* What seems to be wrong? From that thread, I think I need to install xorg-base, possibly? Could it be that I installed the wrong video drivers for a virtual machine? (I assume it's the virtual machine I need drivers for, not my actual video card, right?)
* In a situation like this, how should I properly use GRUB to boot into CLI where I can diagnose, fix stuff, and do things like install xorg-base? I can't find any way to boot to command line.

2. But I didn't know how to access underlying files when on boot disk, so I did this:

$ sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

$ grep EE /mnt/var/log/Xorg.0.log
4. Well, I can't copy the output because of no GUI, but there were 3 errors:
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
Are any of these relevant to why I boot into a black screen rather than something that looks like GNOME?

I just installed gnome from [testing], the first thing is that there are some conflicts in "gnome" group (for instance gnome-themes and gnome-themes-standard), but more important thing is that I have no idea how to configure it.
Previously I was using xfce4.
I run gnome this way in .xinitrc:
setxkbmap pl
exec gnome-session
I had no idea which window manager is running, "ps ux" gives me no hints, but I noticed that uninstalling metacity had no effect, so I read about gnome 3 more and realized that gnome-shell must be a window manager.
In the top of the screen I have access to gnome-control-center (right top of the screen, then there are settings in menu) and to the applications (left top of the screen).
After searching the web on this subject I gave up and decided to ask here.... three things:
1) how to edit menu? I can only start applications from the preconfigured menu, I can't start something there is not in menu, there is no "edit menu" in gnome-control-center, there is application called alacarte but it crashes (probably invalid python version)
2) how to add quick launch icons to desktop? I need terminal, firefox, gimp and rawtherapee there
3) how to configure virtual desktops?Hi Jacek

I have tried to load and install gnome for thge past three(3) days with no success. If this is what Arch linux is all about then its lost on me. Anybody want to change my mind?
