How to install Lion on a standalone MBP

I gave my daughter a MBP and the Hard drive died.  She has no other Mac's to use.  But does have access to PC's
I am planning to ship her a new HD from OWC but I have no idea how she can install the operating system.
Any thoughts out there?
I am not opposed to buying a new copy of Lion for her
Dunc

Apple sells Lion on a USB thumb drive for $69 http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY She would have to erase and format the drive to use it.
Or you can create a bootable DVD of Lion http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/qt/Create-A-Bootable-Copy-Of-Os-X-L ion.htm

  • Selling a MBP - How to install lion

I'd like to sell my MBP. And I'd  like to install Lion on it (since I use mountain lion). How do I do that?
My thoughts: I can't install it from my Store account. The MBP Is not able to go to the internet.
Am I allowed to sell my old OSX?
Best idea I had was to connect the MBP as target disk and let the one who wants to buy it connect withh his/her account to the store to buy it.
    Better Ideas someone?
    Thanks
P.S. Couldn't find Lion in the store though

then you can not legally sell it with either Lion or Mountain Lion installed on it. As both of those version of OS X are TIED to YOUR Apple ID and can not be transferred to anyone else.
You must install the Original version of OS X that came on it when it was new and supply the included System Discs with the system when you sell it.
How old it your Mac? What Model year is it? Go to the Apple Logo in the menu bar and select "About This Mac". That will display what model year it is.

  • How to install Lion OSX on new SSD without install disc

    TL;DR
I need a way to install Lion on a new SSD without an install disc, and how to format it without a Mac.
Hello, just yesterday I opened up my MBP 13" Mid-2010 running 10.7.(4/5) (Not sure which it is, but I think it is 10.7.5) and the first thing I saw was Skype tring to sign in. It looked fine, untill I took a second look and I heard a strange clicking noise coming from my computer. The Sykpe signin page said "Disc I/O error" or something like that. I instantly knew there was something wrong with my hard drive. Tried rebooting, grey screen, strange clicking noise like most people with hard drive failure. I was devistated. It has worked minutes ago, then my brother gets off, I open it up,and the hard drive has failed. After I got over the initial shock, I googled "hard drive replacement" after searching for a while, I noticed most sites just showed how to UPGRADE your hard drive, cloning it and all. Well, heres my main problem. I had no time to clone. Luckily, I had started backup up a month ago, and all my data is safe on my external hard drive, but this is only a time machine backup. No OS. Now, most people can just put in their install disk and voila! But, I, sadly, do not have my install disk. No idea where it went, I just don't have it. So, I was wondering if there was any possible way to make a bootable USB or disk without having acsess to a Mac, or having to buy a disc. I bought Lion, and I'm hoping that there is a way to download this and put it on a USB, then boot my computer from it. Now, my second problem is formatting. I have no idea how to format my SSD, let alone without a Mac. If there is some way to format an SSD so that it will work with a MacBook Pro, that would be great.on a PC
IMPORTANT: No, I don't have ANY install discs, the only one I had, for Snow Leopard, is gone. And no, I don't have access to ANY Macs to format the SSD. Finally, I would really love to be able to do this all cost-free, as I have already purchased the Lion, and dont feel like buying a disc for it again.

    Yes. See below:
    Drive Erase for Lion/Mountain Lion
    1.  Wait until the Main Menu appears. This could take quite some time because you are doing all of this over an Internet connection. You should use Ethernet if possible. It's much faster than wireless. Select Disk Utility from the Main Menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select the SSD main entry (mfgr.'s ID and size.) Click on the Partition tab in DU's main window. Select One partition from the dropdown menu under Partition Scheme.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
After the above has completed quit DU and return to the Main Menu. Click on the Install/Reinstall OS X option then click on the Continue button.
You should be all set if there are no glitches.

  • Any ideas on how I install Lion on a new hard drive

Any ideas on how I might install Lion on a new hard drive when I purchased the OS online from Apple prior to my hard drive failing?       I don't have a disk.

when you install your new drive, what happens? it should boot into internet recovery and you setup from there.
    does it not do that?
here is an article about how to force internet recover http://www.cultofmac.com/106669/force-lion-to-start-internet-recovery-on-your-20 11-or-later-mac-os-x-tips/
here is apple literature about the recovery partition (if you had a hard drive) http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
here is a do it yourself downloader that makes a usb stick the recovery disk. If you have data on the usb drive I would back it up, as this will erase everything else on the thumb drive. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

  • How to install Lion on a MacBook Pro 2,2?

    Hi everyone,
I try to install OS X 10.7 on my MacBook Pro 2,2 (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz, 3GB RAM, 500GB HD with 270 of free disk space). I tried to install Lion from a USB stick but only got an error message that Mac OS X Lion Installation.app could not be used with the current version of Mac OS X (10.5.8).
According to Mactracker, my MBP should be able to run OS 10.7.5…
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Your help would be very much appreciated!
    Cheers,

  • How to install lion cleaning the hard drive

I have a MacBook I am currently running Liuon but have previously installed Leopard and Snow Leopard without clearing the hard drive first.
The machine has now three operating systems installed and is running very slow.
It has been suggested that I make a copy of the hard drive, before erasing all the information and loading Lion on a clean hard drive.
    How do i do this?

Install Lion to a blank drive or partition, including one created with the Disk Utility, and then either use the Migration Assistant or copy your files to the new system manually as desired.

  • How to install Lion over Leopard if I already have the InstallESD.dmg file?

How can I install Lion over Leopard? I know everyone keeps saying you have to have Snow Leopard, but it seems that you only need it to actually download the file. I have the file and I've created a back-up disk and drive (using a 4gb card) and nothing worked. I don't understand why I can't install even if I have the file. The computer doesn't even recognize the disk when I press option at start up but it recoginizes it as Lion when fully logged in. I can't install using the .pkg file because it says it can't be installed on the running system. I have tried to use the drive and it gives me a EFI Boot when I press option at start up and so I click on it and It goes to the apple grey screen with the circle circling below it. But after a while, that apple turns into a No sign basically. So what else do I need to change or edit to install Lion over Leopard. The startup disk nor the drive are working.

The Lion installer is not a bootable device. You must run the installer like any other application. Since the installer will only upgrade Snow Leopard it may refuse to run. What you might try is putting a bootable Snow Leopard system onto a 16 GB USB flash drive, drag the Lion installer application into the Applications folder, boot the computer from the flash drive then run the Lion installer.
As for creating your own bootable flash drive you will need an 8 GB flash drive for that:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • Is it possible to install Lion on a new MBP (non-retina)?

From what I can conclude, there doesn't seem to be any way to install Lion on a brand new MBP with Mountain Lion pre-installed (purchased today). I have the Lion installer but only for a MacPro, so presumably that won't work. Has anyone found a way to do this?

While it's probably unlikely to work, if you can find someone with the same generation MBP that shipped with Lion you can have them install Lion to an empty external drive and you can try booting from that. You will need the specific version of Lion to these system that cannot be downloaded from the App Store and currently must be installed from an Internet Recovery. If you can boot then you should be able to clone that to your internal drive and be on your merry way.
There is a little crossover where systems that shipped with ML will in fact boot Lion depending on when they were actually manufactured. Hopefully yours is one of them.

  • Conflicting info on how to install Lion; which is correct?

Since there are no instructions for Lion, as has been stated here many times, which of the following procedures is the correct one for installation of Lion?
A: install Lion on top of Snow Leopard -  on an HD partition which contains SL or on top an external HD which contains SL.
    or
B: install Lion on an HD partition, an erased HD, or eternal HD - which does not contain SL.
Instructions are available on web sites that appear reputable for both procedures.

Both procedures work.  It depends your preference for an upgrade to your system or a fresh install to another disk/partition.

  • How to install Lion on the extra mac

I have installed Lion on my Imac and I will have the same OS in my macBook Pro too.
Doi I have to pay an extra licence now?

If you own the machine, no. There is no more family pack. Simply sign into the app store and download Lion again on your second machine, then install. You could create an installation DVD from the installer you downloaded for your first machine (if you haven't already run the installer, which will self delete during the installation process).

  • How to install lion in another partition

I have a macbook pro with approx. 50gigs remaining on the HD, and I want to install Lion on a separate partition so I can still use my rosetta based apps such as quicken etc.
What's the best and saftest way for me to go about doing this?
    best,
    Jeffmgr

Dynamically partition the HD to add the additional volume. If the new one's size is larger than what's used on the boot volume, then use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone the boot drive to it. Boot with the clone and ensure it works like the original. If so, DL Lion, save a copy to another location, since the dumb app deletes itself when installing, then install Lion onto the clone. If the new volume can't hold the boot drive's contents, then boot with the original, DL Lion, save a copy, install Lion onto the new volume, and, on first boot, use the Setup Assistant to transfer the users folder and apps. You'll have to figure out what you can't migrate. Personally, if you can't do the first, get an ext FWHD and put the clone and Lion onto it.

  • How to install Lion on older Mac Pro

I had a Macbook Pro that I installed Lion onto. The Macbook pro overheated and is now dead. I'd like to install Lion on my older Mac Pro (can't install Maverick on this computer) and when I go to the app store it says Lion isn't available in the U.S. Anyway to get it onto this computer? If not, I have no way of syncing this Mac.

  • How to install QT7 Pro on a MBP running 10.6.7

I bought QT7pro for my previous MBP and now want to install it on this MBP running 10.6.7. but it tells me I already have QT installed on the MBP. The only QT I can see is QT-X. How can I install the pro version or use the registration key?
I have trashed my QT-X  and tried to do a fresh install of QT7 but with no luck, any suggestions?

I bought a QT Pro license but it will not install, only Player will.
The is nothing to install. When you correctly enter the "Registered To:" name and "Registration Code:" key, The QT 7 Player becomes the QT 7 "Pro" Player with editing/transcoding features unlocked for use.

I have all the requirements already, but when I click the install button nothing happens. theres no loading bar or wizard. even when i search for "OS X Lion" nothing shows up. but I already have it purchased. odd right? Would I have to buy the disk from the apple store and do it that way or is something wrong with my computer. I already rebooted it like 4 times btw. Thanks.

    - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.  Sign in and then reclick the Lion buy.  It won’t charge you again.
Try resetting the App Store and Clearing Cookies.
