How To Install Logic Pro from my Mac Pro to a new iMac?

I read about this once but have forgotten.
I currently have Logic Pro on my Mac Pro.Using the latest version.
Just bought an iMac which will be here soon.
I have the original Logic discs and the box says "Upgrade from Logic Studio or Logic Pro" on the front.
As I remember, I will have to install all these DVDs on the new iMac, then somehow update the application to the current version online. Is this correct?
Where does one go to do the update? App store? So confusing.
It's like...they wanted you to register your copy of Logic when you bought it...so if you did, why don't they know you already own it and allow you to just download it to your new computer?
Thanks for any help
Tom

Apple is nowhere near as small a company and unfortunately, when a company grows, these kind of requests start to come in so often that the management finds ways to obscure, redirect, or flat out refuse to provide service and help out.
There is also the big factor that Apple may not even know the key themselves. Even if they know you bought a copy, Logic doesnt talk to the internet to verify AFAIK so there would be very little reason for them to be able to link your key to your receipt to tell you what your serial was, and I imagine they are understandably touchy about giving out new ones.
Does your old registration login still work? I was under the impression that it would all be eaten up by the App Store.

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.

how do I copy files from my old pc to my new imac?

There are many methods, however you are specific about the type of files you want to move. The first time your Mac turns on it begins with Setup Assistant and asks if you want to migrate from another Mac or PC, you must have missed that. I'd recommend looking over Pondini's Guide and following the directions for using Migration Assistant. You can find them by clicking How to Use Migration Assistant From PC to Mac 10.7 Lion.
If you have specific files you are attempting to migrate then moving them to an external HD and then just dragging and dropping them from the EHD to the Mac would be very simple. Apple explains migration strategies in Switch 101

How do I transfer photos from my older MacbookAir to my new iMac?

Copy them to an external hard drive or flash drive. Then restore them from the external drive to the new computer.
Or if you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant they will be transferred along with everything else in your Home folder.
Connect the two to your local network, enable File Sharing, copy the files over the network. You may need to do this in order to use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.

  • How to install an OS on a Mac Pro without using a startup disk

Good Evening... I have purchased an Mac Pro 4,1 without any HDD attached to it and I have no startup disk for the installation an OS... When I do power on the Mac Pro, I get a flashing folder with a question mark in it! How can I be able to add an OS for two HDDs that I would like to install?

No. Boot the MP using the external drive. If you need to prep the drives, then:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Once the drive has been prepped just clone your external drive to the internal drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the Internal drive. Source means the External startup drive.

  • How to install Logic 9 (from app store) on second computer?

    Hi,
I bought Logic pro in the app store and run it for now on my MacAir. I have, after successful installation, deleted the virtual intallation drive.
I know it is possible and allowed to use it on my iMac as well.
Question: How can I install it there? How can I get the installation files on my iMac?
    Thanks in advance,

    Additional tip:
Do not press a purchase button.. only a download button otherwise you may be charged again for Logic Pro.
    Instead...
Find the emailed receipt that Apple sent you when you originally puchased Logic Pro from the App store and check the email addess that was used to send it to you. Normally that is the same as the Apple ID that was used to purchase it... so make sure that is the same Apple ID that you are using in the App Store application when you signed in to it.
If it is the same and you still cannot download Logic Pro, you will probably need that receipt when you contact Apple to identify that you purchased Logic Pro.. so it's worth a look no matter what.

  • HT3226 how do I clean dust from inside Mac Pro?

I have compressed air, but I know it also can leave some residue, even when it is held upright (never ever use compressed air from a can held other than upright!). But is there something like a mini-vacuum cleaner? I don't want to blow the dust and cat hair further into the machine. When using compressed air it tends to blow it everywhere...what about compressed air plus holding, nearby, the operating end of a vacuum cleaner hose?

I have just cleaned my Mac Pro. Yes you are on the right track. I pulled out the processor assembly at the bottom, the SuperDrive tray at the top (both very easy), and the graphics card (at little bit harder),  and with compressed air in one hand, and vacuum cleaner in the other, I blowed and vacuumed out all the dust, there was heaps!
As others have suggested, use the compress air conservatively and in brief bursts, and only when the vacuum can't get to or dislodge some dust. I've had one graphics card fail due to the build up of dust in his fan fins, so I recommend getting it out and cleaning those little fins - which will probably be clogged with dust.
My Mac Pro now runs much quieter, and happier I suspect.

  • How can I transfer Elements 10 from my Mac Mini to my new iMac?

    Hi all!
I recently purchased Elements 10 and installed it on my Mac Mini only because my old iMac was dying.  I now have a new iMac and I would like to have Elements 10 on the iMac and remove it from my Mac Mini.  I want to do this because the Mac Mini is used as a music server.  The iMac desktop is my main computer and is a much better place to have Elements 10.
Can I do this?  What do I need to do?
    Thanks in advance!

On the mini, go to Editor>Help Deactivate. Then install PSE on the imac. You can actually have it on two computers, but if you don't want it on the mini anymore you might as well free up that activation for future use.
Don't try to copy PSE to the new computer. It installs stuff in many places, not just the applications folder, unless you have the app store version, in which case you would just go to app store>purchases on the imac to add it there. The app store version can be installed on all the macs that use the same app store/itunes ID, no matter how many that may be,

  • Can't transfer files from mini mac (10.4) to new imac

While setting up my father's new imac, the imac suggested selecting send files "to your new computer" ,or something to that effect, from the Migration Assistant in the mini. The only options on the mini were to transfer files from another computer to the mini. The mini is running system 10.4.11
Do I need to upgrade to system 10.5 before I can transfer the files?

I have a dsic for 10.5; do you think it will help if I install it? How else can I update Migration assistant?
I do not have access to a Mac with 10.4 on it to test this. However, It certainly would not hurt to upgrade the OS, and it might help.
    Good luck.

PowerPC = PPC, this is the architechture of microproccors that Apple used prior to 2006 when they transitioned to Intel based microprocessors. Apple supported PPC based apps from 2006 to about 2012 when Lion (10.7.x) was first introduced. They gave users 6 years to upgrade all of their legacy apps to Intel based apps. Even after 6+ years some users still complained because their old apps would not run with new versions of OS X, that is technology though.
You might still have PPC based apps, if you do and you want to use them they need to be upgraded or replaced. I have noted a link to an article that will help walk you through to see if you have any PPC based apps. If you do then you can decide if you want to continue using them or upgrade.
