Buy VMware Fusion or Parallels and install Vista in that. BootCamp for Mountain Lion won't support Vista.

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.

  • How to install "numbers" downloaded on my mac to my iPad?

    Hi,
how to install "numbers" downloaded on my mac to my iPad?
    Thank you

Your Mac and the iPad use different operating systems. The Numbers version you have on the Mac can only be installed on Macs, so you have to purchase the Numbers version for the iPad, which you will be able to install on an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Go to the App Store on the iPad and purchase Numbers

  • How to install on new (late 2010) Mac Pro

I am going to use Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my old G5 to my new Mac Pro, but would appreciate advice on how to install AW on the new Mac. I have my original Appleworks 6 DVD with the notation in small print: Version 6.2.9 (circa 2003). I then also have a CD that I burned and labeled "Appleworks 6.2.9 Updater". I vaguely remember doing this, but can not recall what it was for. Please advice. Thanks!

OK, got it by installing from the disk and the computer sending me to Rosetta. Much simpler than I expected. Appleworks rocks .

How to install "Turbo C" programme on mac... Need an urgent reply..

I suppose I'll ask the question that no one else has yet...why do you want to install Turbo C on your Mac?  More specifically, what is the ultimate task you are trying to achieve?
Turbo C hasn't been in development since the 1990s; it's successor, Turbo C++, is similarly out of development; it was a 16-bit Windows program, so it never ran on any Apple OS...let alone OS X.
Embarcadaro, the company which bought the "Turbo" line from Borland, has a modern succesor to those compilers, C++Builder (although it isn't free).  But Turbo C is a museum piece only notable for its historical value...unless you're writing programs for 20 year old computers.

  • How do I find out if my Mac OS x version 10.6.8 has enough memory space for me to down load Mountain Lion?

How do I find out if my Mac OS x version 10.6.8 has enough memory space for me to down load Mountain Lion?

You need to know 2 things
Ram, you need a minimum of 2GB, but 4GB (or more) is recommended.
HDD, you need a minimum of 20GB of hard disk space (including space for operation)
    So.
Go to Apple>About this Mac and you will be able to see the amount of Ram installed.
Then select your hard drive (in Finder>Sidebar, usually called MacintoshHD) and click cmd-i (Command key and the letter I) look for capacity and available, post the results here.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Aperture can't be installed on "Macintosh HD" because Mac OS X version 10.10 or later is required.

    Hi
I have two MacBookPro, and Installed Yosemite to the other of them.
Since my Mac stopped working well, I do not attend to install Yosemite to the other Mac, but I keep my old Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63).
    So here is the problem:
"Aperture can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because Mac OS X version 10.10 or later is required."
What is the workaround for this problem?
    Thanks!

Re: How do I reinstall an older version of Aperture from the App Store?in response to léonie | This solved my question
    @léonie
Thanks for your help with this. I've downloaded the latest RAW support updates supported on my machine - V4.09 that seems to contain all of the RAW formats for previous updated including V4.06, which includes the NEX 3N, my camera. After a short while (there seemed to be some sort of background processing ging on in Aperture) it started to allow my NEX 3N photos to be viewed. Some of the thumbnails were corrupted, but if I made a slight edit in each of these files, the thumbnails updated and all was well.
Prior to this, I raised a call with Apple, because the inability to reinstall software from the App Store that I've purchased from in App Store to a machine that supports OSX 10.7.5 and no later strikes me as a problem. I need to know that if my Time Machine backup fails and I need to reinstall, I've got somewhere I can go.
The support people at Apple were very helpful, and it feels like they recognise this as a problem, and are working to resolve it behind the scenes. The App Store will not allow me to download the last version that works on my machine at the moment, but it sounds like Apple is thinking about how to do this. In the meantime, they are shipping me a copy of Aperture 3.0 on CD, and sending me a registration code. This will solve my immediate problem.
This does make me wary about using the App Store for purchases in the future. I don't upgrade my hardware that frequently - I have no real need to as it just keeps working - and so not having physical copies of installation media for when the applications stop supporting my OS is a worry. On the face of it, maintaining prior versions of the software for older machines to download from the App Store seems like a reasonable solution, but they are not there yet, and there is no real commitment for them to do this. Anyone who doesn't back up their Apps in Time Machine (probably the majority of users) could loose them altogether when Apple moves on, and cuts app support for older OS versions.
Thanks to @léonie and @Frank Cagianno for your help.
