Hold down command-R to boot into recovery mode and then install the OS.  You need an Internet connection.

  • Need to install clean OS on new hard disk for MacBook air

I have just installed a new hard disk on my MacBook air. How do I format and install OS?
    What OS to install?
    How to format?
The origin hard disk is dead!

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • How to install XP on an R61i with a new hard disk

I have an R61i which I've used for years.  The hard disk died and I put in a new unpartitioned hard disk.
Our IT guy has provided me with the six disk set "Thinkpad Product Recovery CD for Thinkpad T61, R61 ... " as well as an OEM MS Windows XP install disk complete with valid product key.
First I tried to boot the Recovery CD #1.  It is not bootable.
Then I installed XP from the MS XP disk.  Everything goes OK, but the drivers for the R61i network interfaces and other special hardware are not on the MS XP disk.  When I look for an application on the Recovery Disks that might install them, there is none.
Then I tried "search for new hardware", so XP found the unsupported network interfaces.  I gave Recovery Disk #1 as the location of the drivers to be loaded.  XP did not find the needed drivers there.
Then I went to the Lenovo site and found an install file for their recovery environment.  I downloaded it on another machine, burned a DVD, and ran it on the R61i.  It won't run because there is no .NET framework in the XP that was loaded from the MS XP disk.
It seems likely that everything that I need to get the R61i set up with all its hardware should be on the recovery disks somewhere, but how can I get to it?
Why is this so difficult?  Surely I am not the only person who has ever had to replace a dead hard drive!!!

Welcome to the forum. The simplest way to get the drivers you need is to download and install ThinkVantage System Update  You'll need  version 3.16 for For Windows 2000, XP and Vista.
After you install SU, run it and let it find all the device drivers, ThinkVantage utilities and such for your system. Then let SU install them for you.
Alternatively you could go to Drivers and software - ThinkPad R61 to manually download and install what you need. That's a lot more work.

  • Installing Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade in a new hard disk

I have an U330 and I have received Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade disc. My pre-installed OS is Windows Vista.
I bought a new 500 Gb hard disk and I want to change my U330's hd for this new one AND also want to install Windows 7 in this new hard disk.
Question: is is possible to install windows 7 using Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade discs directly in this new hard disk?
Or do I need first to change the hard disk (and restore backup or restore factory default) and then upgrade to Windows 7?
    Thanks in advance

I dont think it is possible, the upgrade disk will check for a eligible version of Windows vista before starting the installtion
    Cheers and regards,

You either need to use Remote Disk http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777?viewlocale=en_US  or buy an external CD drive.

  • Re: How to install Windows from recovery media on a new hard drive?

Immediately after a Windows update, my computer would not restart. It said disk error.
I could not start it from the recovery media and F8 would not work. I bought and installed a new hard drive. Now when I put in the recovery media to install Windows on the new hard drive, it gives an error message.
What can this be? Should I be able to install Windows from the recovery media?
It is Windows 7 and the laptop is Satellite A500, 64 bit.

    Hello
Generally speaking you can install recovery image on every compatible HDD so thee should not be any problem about it.
Please tell us what happen when you start recovery installation. Which error message is shown?
Is new HDD recognized in BIOS. Before you start recovery installation set BIOS to default settings.

  • Trying to install OS X 10.3 on a new hard disk.

I inserted a new hard drive into my iMac, as I knew that I needed more hard disk space for Panther then the 6 GB that I had with 9.2.2 (not for the install, which only requires 2 GB, but for general use).
I zeroed it and formatted it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but when I continued with installation it said, "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." when I tried to select a volume for installation.
Although I don't want to install until I have checked the firmware is updated (using the old hard drive and OS 9.2.2), I obviously don't want these problems when I try to install in a month or so.
Hard disk is Maxtor 6E040L0, 38.3 GB.
I have looked at Solution: mac os x cannot start up from this volume (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2265801&#2265801), but the info says that the drive does have Applepartitionscheme. I will try it with the opposing scheme, if possible, but I assume that won't work.

To install Panther, you need the retail install version CDs (black with silver X). I suspect you are trying to use a model specific version or upgrade version (gray), that won't work.
When you formatted the new drive, did you check to install the OS 9 drivers? The drivers need to be installed if you want to be able to boot OS 9.x. If you just want to be able to run in classic mode, the drivers are not necessary.
If OS X has never been installed on your Mac, you need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.

  • How To Install Older Version of OSX on Second Account

I still use my Elements 8 Photoshop with a plug-in supplemental application called Essentials which is now not supported on the latest OSX mavericks business, and I’m sure Elements 8 isn’t to far behind either.
So is there any way I can put back one of my older OSX’s to a secondary account allowing me to switch when I feel like using Elements 8 ...being that I don’t see the reinstall on my time capsule for Elements 8 at all for some reason, humph.

Yeah ....I think I’m just going to stick with Mountain Lion here on out and drop Mavericks (I’ll look up on discussions on how to reinstate - I’m sure it’s there). Because come to think of it ...this Photoshop business or rather Adobe all going online will be an issue in the near future no doubt ...best quit while I’m ahead.
But the scoop I had at the time with putting iTunes on a partition was, increases performance ...I mean you can’t tell me that a hard drive full of applications will run just as fast with one that has only a few, right? I mean that’s the big push for Solid State Hard Drives, no? Running just as fast and “cool” when full, no?
I can say though having my iTunes on a partition; if making things run faster I can only speculate because I’m in no position to compare, it’s either one way or the other - has given me no trouble {I’m sure non whatsoever]. Instructions were found online, I think CNET making the suggestion if some peoples iTune collection was getting up there (movies and all). It was way more scarier than hard.
Any comments, opinions and suggestions are always welcome.
    Thank you in advance,

  • How to install licensed version of CS4 on a new drive

I downloaded CS4 from Adobe site.  Installed it but it won't accept my legal product ID.  It asks for upgrade ID.  DOH!

That is most likely indicating that you are trying to install using a serial number for an upgrade version (meaning you purchased an upgrade version of CS4).  In order to activate an upgrade version you need to prove that you qualify for it by selecting the older version that you also own and provide its serial number as well. The other option is to have that older version already installed and activated on the machine.

  • HT4848 Restoring a Time Machine backup with ML OSX over a new Hard Disk

I have MacBook Pro that I had to replace the Hard Drive with a new one and it came installed with a copy of SnowLeopard OSX. Now I want to restore all my data and settings using Time Machine backup but this was made on my previous hard drive that used Mountain Lion OSX
I don't know if I have to upgrade from Snow Leopard to ML from the App Store before doing the restore or Time Machine takes care of this when I proceed with the restore task?
I will appreciate any assistance to avoid any mess
    Thanks for your help.

If the time machine backup is of mountain lion, you can boot holding the option key and select the time machine drive.  Then select restore from time machine backup there.  No need to install any OS first.

  • How to search files on a windows configured external hard disk on macbook air

I am trying to search files on my passport Ultra Western Digital, which is configured for windows and has read only permissions for my macbook air, i am unable to instant search results through finder or spotlight. Is there a way to search them?

    Well, to clarify:
I want to find all user text files and mail messages on a Time Machine backup disk that contain the word "escalator".
By user files I mean those in
    /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/<username>iMac/*/Macintosh HD/Users
    and subdirectories thereof.
I was trying to use the find command, but it was taking a very long time, so I aborted it. I then realized that most of the files have many hard links, and therefore will be searched many times. That, of course, is a great waste.
Is there some way to search each file only once?
    Thanks.

  • I was using the newest version on OSX 10.7.5 and I was in full screen mode and viewing a photo and it was impossible to exit full screen. This happened at 11:03pm on Friday April 12, 2013. How to fix

I was using the newest version on OSX 10.7.5 and I was in full screen mode and viewing a photo and it was impossible to exit full screen. This happened at 11:03pm on Friday April 12, 2013. I deleted this from my apps and then deleted iphoto from my purchases in macbook app store the search it the app store and it says it has still been installed. What can I do to fix it?

Well deleting it from your machine was not the way to go.
Deleting it from your Purchases List was definitely not the way to go.
So, I'm not really sure how you're going to reinstall it.
But figure that out and we can try help. Contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store Window. They should be able to get it back on your purchases list so you can reinstall it.

  • How to install older versions of Flash Player(ActiveX) in Win 8?

    Hello all,
How to install older version of Flash Player in Windows 8? and how to uninstall default Flash Player that come from IE10 in Windows 8?
Actually I want to install Adobe_Flash_Player_(IE)_v11.7.700.224.exe in Windows 8.
Is it possible to overcome this issue? If it is not, could you share me your information on this issue?
    Thanks in advance.
    RK.

    Thank you for reply..
Actually i uninstalled the existing version of Flash Player from my Windows 8 PC, but when i tried to install the older version, it was not allowing me to install and was showing that my browser is included with latest version.
Even i followed the below given websites, it didn't given any remedy for it.
    http://flash-focus.blogspot.in/2007/03/installing-previous-versions-of-flash.html
    http://www.itsecdb.com/oval/objectdetails/oval/org.mitre.oval/obj/7075/windows-registry_ob ject-Registry-that-holds-the-version-of-the-Adobe-Flash-Player-in/
So that my PC is restricting the older version installation from somewhere which holds the version information and that user cannot modify/delete that information. If i know that mystery i can install any version of Flash Player in my Windows 8.
I hope i will find this.
    Thanks for your support.
