How to install OS on new internal?

Hello, Im a bit of a novice here. I recently replaced my hard drive in my Power Mac G5. The old hard drive died 2 weeks after the Apple Care ended. I purchased a new hard drive (Western Digital SATA 500gb) the physical install was very easy and clean. I started up the computer with the install disc in the drive while holding down the "c" key and was able to get to disk utility. I partitioned the drive and then set about installing the OS X onto the drive. In the installer the HD icon is unselectable, it has the red exclamation point over it. Really not sure what else to do. Searched around the internet for a while trying to find a solution, with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks for your help...

Hi Limnos;
There is no such thing as an Intel G5!
G5 is a Power PC chip made by IBM and Intel is a chip made by Intel of course.
If you are referring to the desktop model with an Intel processor that is commonly called the Mac Pro.

  • Installing Leopard and new internal hard drive at same time, best plan?

Ok so basically the title explains what I need to do. I am currently travelling in Europe, and returning home to New York on Tuesday night. I have a new hitachi 250gb HD and will have Leopard waiting for me at home when I arrive, and will get right to doing this installation. I am writing on the discussion boards here because I am hoping the users here can give me their opinions on what is the best plan of action to do this whole install?
So what I was thinking was, I should remove the hard drive that's already inside, put it into an external enclosure. Then, put my new blank 250gb hard drive into the macbook pro, close up the computer, then put the Leopard OSX install disk, and do a completely fresh install of Leopard. Then, after installing (or during installing?) I should run the migration assistant program to get all my files and settings etc. transferred over to the new internal hard drive with Leopard on it, from the old hard drive that will be plugged in from an enclosure as an external drive.
Will this plan have any problems that I am not aware of? Is there a better process for doing this task? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I am anxious to get my new hard drive into the computer because my 160gb is filling up, and dying so badly to use the new Leopard!!

You could also put the new disk in the external enclosure, partition it using disk utility. Then make a clone of your current hard disk to the new external one using the restore feature in disk utility. Boot from the external disk and Install Leopard as an upgrade keeping all your files and setting. check everything is all running how I should and swap drives over. That's another option for you.

  • How do you make a new internal drive bootable?

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro running 10.8.4, and just installed two new internal sata drives. I initialized them (Mac OX Extended (journaled). Are they now ready to install a system on (bootable)? I want to install 10.7 on one drive, and OSX 10.6.8 on the other. Other than the system, I want to keep them empty for now. I don't need files moved from the original drive with Mountain Lion. How do I accomplish this? Thanks.

    They are not bootable unless:
    Partitioned using GUID.
    Formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
Have a compatible version of OS X installed.
Use your Snow Leopard DVD to install Snow Leopard. After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

    Welcome to the community @Teekayk
I understand you are trying to install your Deskjet 3055A on your Mac, running Mavericks. The installation CD may be compatible up to 10.6, and that could be why you are seeing the error message.
This link should help you. It will show you how to install the printer on your Mac. There is no full driver and software available for the Deskjet 3055A on Mavericks, which basically means you will need to review your other options to scan on your Mac through Apple Updates, which is all included in the guide.

  • Tutorial: how to install ubuntu on new alu macs.

Okay, to install the most popular distro. of linux, ubuntu, you must first go to the site and download a live CD (this is the type of installer i will be using on this tutorial). Now after the download is done, go to disk utilities and burn the img to a CD-R. Put the CD somewhere safe for now. Now go to the bootcamp assistant app and make a partition, at least 20 gigs should do. now after that is done, dont click install windows now, click on install later. Okay, now for installing...
    1. put the cd in the computer.
    2. restart and hold down the option key at startup (before apple logo)
    3. select windows (it says windows because that is the only approved OS to run with macOS)
    4. select language and then select install ubuntu.
    5. follow the simple instructions until it gets to the part where you need to partition your drive.
    6. select manually partition (the last option)
    7. delete the 20Gig FAT32 partition (should be near bottom)
    8. now with the free space, create a 3000mb swap area partition.
    9. after that, make a 1000mb ext3 (the first option) and then under mount options, make it a /home partition.
    10. for the final step, make the rest of the free space a ext3 but under the mount options, this time just select the "/". now your done, click install and fill out your personal info and you should be good.
    11. have it restart and when it's shutting down, it should spit out the disk.
    12. once it is restarting, hold down the option key again and insert the disk once the macOS HD icon comes up. the disk should appear next to it and be labeled windows.
    13. select the cd and when the menu for the cd comes up again, go to the last option where it says "boot up from first drive" or something like that (sorry, im typing this off of memory).
    14. you will need to update everything, but besides that, you should be golden. as far as i know, you have to insert the cd every time, i dont know how to get it to work with out the cd, sorry. (please inform me if someone knows how)
    hope this helped!

  • How do I move my iTunes media/install to a new internal hard drive?

The Seagate hard drive that stores my Windows 7 OS and my iTunes media library is dying a slow death.  I list the hard drive manufacturer because of my frustration with that company right now.  (Buy WD !).
Anyway, I fresh installed iTunes and Windows 7 on another hard drive.  Since I can sometimes get to the Seagate drive, I copied my existing iTunes media library from the dying Seagate drive to the new WD drive.  I went in to iTunes preferences->advanced and changed the location of the iTunes media folder location (C:\iTunes\iTunes Media) to where I copied the original iTunes media folder.  Everything is fine so far.
    My two problems are these:
    1. iTunes doesn't show me ANY of the audiobooks that I have purchased.  Although, I haven't gone through all the music to verify, it does seem as though all purchased movies and music is accounted for.  (movies and tv shows are available for streaming anyway).
    2. When I check to sync my iPhone 4S with the iTunes library I get the nasty message that says "are you sure you want to remove your existing music, etc...fro this iPhone"?  Even though I have reinstalled iTunes, it is still the same PC.  How can I get iTunes to recognize that my iPhone syncs to the iTunes library "normally".  Am I the only one who thinks iTunes shouldn't be so troublesome (like Windows is) ?
Thanks in advance for helping me with these issues!

Does anyone know how / if I can get an Apple support person to help with this problem?  Do I need to go to the Apple store?

    Hi jxaustin10,
If you own Acrobat Pro on a disc, simply insert the disc, run setup.exe and use the serial number on the case the disc was in.
If you purchased a download of the software from Adobe, simply visit Adobe.com and click 'Sign in' at the top right corner.  Log into the site with your Adobe ID and password.  Go to the purchases section and you'll find your software download and serial number.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

  • How to install OSX on new SSD?

I just purchased the 2012 i5 Mac Mini and replaced the 500GB hard drive with a new 128GB Samsung 840 Pro. Built many PCs in the past, but this is my first Mac.
What are my options for installing OSX on it? When I first boot up I am greeted with a folder with a question mark in it. I hope this is typical? Also, did the SSD need to be formatted first? I just opened it up and put it in. I thought I could just hit command+r to do an internet install, but I have had no luck getting that to work with my Windows keyboard.
If at all possible, I would prefer not to have to remove the drive again since it's so cumbersome.
I don't have an external optical drive.
I do have an external hard drive.
I do have a few 8GB and 16GB flash drives.
I have an ethernet cable for internet connection.
I probably could have done a little more research before doing this, but I would greatly appreciate any help.

Finally was able to get keyboard to start disk util/internet install. When I started internet install disk was nowhere to be found. I used a SATA to USB cable to boot from the 500GB drive and formatted the SSD. Then rebooted again, and currently finishing internet install. Hope it goes well.

  • How to Install Hitachi SATA Deskstar Internal Hard Drive?

I just purchased HITACHI SATA Deskstar 3/5" 500GB/16MB Cache/72RPM Internal Hard Drive, which said it was compatible with my Mac. I have a iMac mid 2007 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo2 running OSx10.6.4. Is this a simple install or do you recommend I take it into repair? Any suggestions would be welcome, I am a bit of a novice.

Thanks for the feedback. BTW, you might want to roll your own ext HD. I did this one in April when I got the 27":
