How to install OS X 10.6.8 on iMac mid-2007

I try to install Snow Leopard from a DVD MC573Z/A onto my iMac mid-2007 but the machine ejects the DVD.
I see that the latest version of Snow Leopard on DVD, available from the Apple Store, is also numbered MC573Z/A
Would that also be ejected?

The retail DVD looks like this:

have installed 10.10 on my iMac (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz me 2 GB which has slowed to a crawl

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

  • HT4255 Can/Should I install 2 x 8GB SDRAM in my iMac Mid-2010?

Can I install 2 x 8GB SDRAM in my iMac Mid-2010? I logged on to Crucial's website and they recommended 2 x 8GB of RAM. But Apple documentation only seems to say that a max of 4 GB SDRAM is supported. I'm currently using 2 x 2GB. My machine is slow (don't think upgrading to Lion helped permformance). Also, I remember years ago (I think) that RAM should be balanced . . . that is, if I currently have 2 x 2GB, I shouldn't add 2 x 4 GB (my machine has 4 slots), but rather have 4 x 2GB total or 2 x 4GB total. Guess my question is whether I'm better off with:
    a. 4 x 2GB (i.e., add addition 2 x 2GB)
    b. 2 x 4GB (i.e., remove the 2 x 2GB I currently have and replace with 2 x 4GB)
    c. 2 x 8GB (i.e., remove the 2 x 2GB I currently have and replace with 2 x 8GB)
I do a lot of HD video editting.
    Thanks,

    Hi Paul,
I'm in the same boat. My iMac (mid-2010) 3.2GHz Intel Core i3 is running slow for the last little while. I haven't updated my apps in a while because of it. I want as much RAM as I can have and had previously read about iMac being able to take 32GB. And I've also read that the single channel v flex channel v dual channel is not really going to affect what I use the iMac for. So I'm just checking in to see how your upgrade went.
    Currently, I have 2 x 2GB RAM.
    Crucial recommend: 2 x 4GB RAM

However, they have a 2 x 8GB RAM, which look to be the same parameters but they don't 'recommend it'.

  • Imac (mid 2007) - which OS to install?

    Hi there,
I have recently lost my early 2006 macbook. It has had numerous issues such as the common flickering screen, and the bulging battery issue. I was going to attempt to install a new inverter and battery in it but instead, i was able to find a 24" mid 2007 imac with a failed hard drive. My friends were going to dump it as they are going to get a new imac 5K so i decided to take it home. I installed a 1tb disk in it and 6gb of ram to bring it up to modern standards. It comes packaged with 10.5.8 (Leopard).
I also picked up a used magic trackpad for it but only to realize after that it requires 10.6 to run the magic trackpad.
So now my question is, What OS should I run for the iMac (Mid 2007, 2.4Ghz, 6GB Ram, 1TB 7200rpm HDD, ATI Radeon 256mb GDDR3 Memory). My main priorities is speed and performance, the second priority is to be able to use the magic trackpad. I will be using it only for web browsing, listening to music and watching movies. I have other computers at home that deal with "work" (batch editing photos, photoshop, etc).
Thank you very much for your time.

My personal preference for you is to purchase a OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard install disc, then update to OS X 10.6.8 and STAY THERE!
Your IMac will run its best on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard system requirements
    Purchased Installer disc here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
    An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools.
Later versions of OS X are more memory intensive and lean more towards being a hybrid of OS X and IOS.
The only other choice I do not really recommend, but your 2007 IMac may run okay on it is once your IMac is upgraded to OS X 10.6.8, purchase an email download code for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite.you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.

    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
While there is the free OS X 10.10 Yosemite for immediate download on the Mac App Store, your iMac model will run a lot slower on this OS X version and is NOT without plenty of issues and really is not ready for use as an everyday OS.
My opinion here, stay away from installing OS X Yosemite for quite awhile.

Hey Luis. I not only remember…I still have mine (OS 9)!  Works perfectly well…for some things; just need to be selective about what I ask it to do. (Also have its big brother Pismo running Tiger, which is still an extremely competent machine.) When I take them out of their cases, I'm still amazed at the G3's build quality.

  • How To Install 10.5 On A 1st Gen iMac G5

    Hi All
1:40am and I give up and ask for help!
I am trying to install 10.5 on my old iMac G5 but am having massive problems.
I wont bore you all with the history but just descibe the position I now find myslef in and hope someone can help me get this machine up and running.
So, now I know that my machine can't read dual layer disks and that I have to use target mode to my brand new MBP running the latest version of 10.5.
The iMac (please don't ask why) now has a formatted HD with nothing on it.
It will boot into 10.4 on the install DVD OK but I can not find out how to link the two machines and thus use the DVD drive on the MBP to do the install.
I have tried turning the iMac on with the 10.4 DVD in the slot and holding down T but that has no effect ... just boots into the 10.4 installation routine.
I have looked around in the 10.4 Utilities menu to try and find n option to boot into target disk mode but can not see it in startup disk or disk repair. Might be too late at night but ...
Any help with this gratefully received.
    Thanks
    David

Unless there's something wrong with your hardware the machine should be able to read dual layer disks, but the target mode should work for installation as well.
To boot off the leopard DVD on the iMac, press and hold "C" at bootup with the DVD in the drive, not "T". If this doesnt work (as you mentioned the thing has a hard time reading dual layer DVDs), then do the following to boot off of the DVD in Target Disk mode with the DVD in your MacBook Pro.
With the DVD in the drive, boot the MacBook and hold "T" and it will have the firewire symbol dancing on the screen. Connect the MBP to your iMac using a firewire cable. Then boot up the iMac and hold "options" down until it displays a list of drives that can be booted from. The Leopard DVD in the MacBook should be displayed (so should your MBP hard drive, but dont boot off of this). Select the installer DVD and press go (might be a bit laggy, so be patient), and it should boot into the installer.

I believe these are the wrong system restore discs for your model iMac, assuming your are correct that you have mid 2007 iMac.
These gray colored type restore discs are Mac-machine specific and are the wrong ones for your iMac.
    They will not work.
The original OS X restore discs for your model iMac would either install OS X 10.4.11 Tiger or OS X 10.5 Leopard.
You have gray system restore discs for a later model iMac. These will not work with iMac year and model.
    Sorry.
You need to purchase a full retail version of OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard here instead.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
These discs will work with your year and model iMac.
Assuming that your hard drive was installed properly, these white retail OS X install discs should be able to boot, format and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to your 2007 iMac.
    Good Luck!

  • How to install Mac OS 10.1 on iBook G4 mid-2005

Hi. I have just bought a vintage copy of Mac OS 10.1 for my iBook G4, not realizing that I can't strictly speaking install the OS on the machine. I read that some people have done it, but I am running 10.4.11, and I was wondering how I can dual boot and install 10.1 on a different partition, as the earliest OS was 10.3 Panther. Thanks!
    -jonasfromwa

Rather unlikely Puma 10.1.5 would be able to support booting a later model mid-2005 iBook G4 that shipped with Tiger 10.4.x -- As Puma was intended to run on G3 PPCs, that often would have booted in OS 9 by default. And used rather different firmware in specific hardware for the old PPC G3 to use OSX on vintage chips. A real headache zone. I'd rather have seen some more parallel development of OS 9.2.2... Almost as good as Tiger 10.4.11 as a fine OS.
I vaguely remember Puma as a 'vast improvement over the OS X Public Beta of Sept 2000' which some foolishly installed on their workstations.
Use older Vintage hardware with partitioned hard disk drives, and watch for those which supported FireWire (iMac400DV was a good one) because you could use an external hard disk drive. Maybe even boot clones, etc from there. With all the limitations on the early hardware that made first practical use of OS X nearly impossible, a newer machine at the other end won't support an antique operating system readily if at all. Not without writing some code; and there probably are firmware considerations beyond the scope of reason. Better to get the correct hardware for the vintage experience.
Makes me tired just thinking about it!
    Good luck & happy computing!

You are going to need the OSX installation discs that came with your MBP, install OSX Snow Leopard from the disc, then update it to 10.6.8 using software update. Then buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store and install it.
You may not use the copy on the iMac for this, it is a violation of the terms of the license.

    Hi Sanal,
Maya will run natively on your Mac assuming you meet the minimum system requirements, however 3ds Max currently needs a virtualized environment such as Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion to operate.

  • How can I check for spyware on my Intel based mid-2007 iMac running Lion?

I recently received a message stating that my Intel based iMac desktop may contain spyware plus a friend sent me a copy of an email to my iCloud email address that i did not send to him, i was not even home using my iMac on that date. I do have anti-virus software on my iMac from Integra and I do a scan each day before i shutdown the iMac and have not received any such warnings from that software.
I do appreciate any and all advise I can receive in this matter. A long time ago I did receive an email a Yahoo based email address and was notified that I could possibly loose my email account due to junk email being sent from my iMac. I did have the support/warranty from Apple at that time and a phone rep did talk me through steps to check for any intrusion to my iMac with negative results, the iMac was clear of any spyware, etc.
Hoping there is the same for this issue.
