How to install OS X in a 500gb HDD on a A1181 maccbook

I have an old A1181 maccbok (13 inch late 2006) whitch hdd (120gb) crashed. I bought a brand new Toshiba MA01ADV050 hdd (500gb) that I want to replaced the crashed one. Is it possible?
I have replaced the drive but when I start the machine pressing the C key, it hangs with the apple and the spinner spinning.

At some point it will ask you to select a WiFi network name, if you have WiFi, and the password for it or you can Wire the Mac to your internet router with an Ethernet cable.
If you have no internet access at all you are, what they call, SOL. You'll need to get an internet connection to reinstall OS X.

Ok, now that is something I can understand. I did about exactly the same things only using an SSD where you used a 500GB HD.
The way I got it to work was to install the OS onto the SSD while the SSD was external. Before putting the SSD in the MBP I did the rollback of the EFI 1.7 firmware to the 1.6 firmware.
Next I installed the SSD internally into the MBP and it worked, such as it did. It still only works until there is any heavy amount of writing being done to the SSD at which time I get the bb and it spins eternal, not a minute or two.
The Performance Update does not cure my situation. It may stave off the bb for a while longer but that of course is unsatisfactory. I have also tried reinstalling the EFI 1.7 after having done the above and it works, but not for near as long as with having the 1.6 firmware installed.
It seems that my SSD cannot take the data as fast as the MBP tries to feed it. Slowing down that rate via using the 1.6 firmware helps. the Performance Update 1.0 also helps a bit more. Nothing has cured it.

I just ordered a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet and when I receive it I plan on putting my 10GB HDD in it and installing OS X on it (probably 10.2 or 10.4 with XpostFacto) but I know there is a 8GB partition limit on the G3 Wallstreet. I don't need any partitions I just want all 10GB of space to be available. How do I do this? I had a G3 Wallstreet in the past and I believe I had it working with all 10GB at one time. I just don't remember how. Can anyone help? Thanks

There is no workaround to this limitation; the necessary startup files must be found in the first 8GB (I would make it 7.8GB) of the HD for OSX. A few comments:
-I installed 10.2.8 using the custom install options using only 1.6GB of space; I eliminated all the foreign language translators and printer drivers.
-You can use all 10GB of HD space. Even though partitioned, files such as iPhoto, iTunes, etc, can be linked to the main 8GB partition. The 2GB is still usable but just not quite as conveniently.

Hello, it'd be best to use the Original Install Disc while booting the MacBook from it, but a Retail 10.6 Install Disc may work...

How to install optional content on ext. HDD

I read on the Logic Studio page that the HUGE files I can put onto a seperate disk(I don't want 40 gigs sitting on my main drive) but when I go through the installer the only thing selectable is my main drive, the other two(an external and a flash card) have X's through them.
So how excactly do I put all the optional files on my external harddrive?

just a quick note to say I'm doing fine now. Loaded the 10.5.1 Leopard update directly from the apple website (not via Software Update) and currently using latest motu driver 1.4.5: available as of last night. Still have my interface directly plugged into the rear socket of the G5 and I'm going to leave it there. My system has never run better, so I can say that all this grief has been worth it I hope you all get there too. Now...let the music begin!

P55-CD53, how to install SATA AHCI drivers and Matrix Storage Manager?

Please excuse my noobness as this is for my first PC build and much of it is Greek to me, but could someone please inform/educate me as to what the following drivers (link) are for and which need to be installed after a fresh installation of Windows 7 Pro x64? Do I need to install all of them because some of these appear to be redundant, just from different manufacturers, or am I mistaken? I have a single 500GB HDD but will probably add more down the road.

After booting from the Windows 7 disc, I selected Repair Windows, Load Drivers. Which specific controllers do I need to install for the P55-CD53 MB since there are multiple controllers listed for each of the four SATA compressed files?
Considering the multiple files and multiple controllers, is there no one out there with a P55-CD53 that has AHCI mode enabled that can give dumbed down instructions on how to do so?
The manual states "Select the appropriate RAID controller and press enter." Well... which one is the appropriate controller? Am I suppose to load the driver for all the AHCI controllers if that's even possible?

Also, regarding the dual BIOS controls for SATA/IDE/RAID settings previously mentioned, I believe SATA ports 1-6 are controlled via Intel and 7,8 are controlled via Jmicron. Considering my HDD is currently plugged into SATA 1, Jmicron probably isn't necessary for the moment.

Turns out that none of the drivers for the controllers listed in iaAHCI.inf could be installed. However, I went ahead and installed the drivers listed for all the controllers in iaStor.inf. I reinstalled Windows 7 to get rid of the BSOD. I then installed the chipset drivers and Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

I want to clone my existing original equipment 500GB HDD to a new 1TB replacement HDD. How to?

I'm gettin too big for my old 500GB HDD, so I bought a new 1TB HDD.
Now, I have the set of rescue disks I made when I first fired up my Compaq Presario CQ57-105TU Laptop. I could use them & fresh install all the original computer software & OS, but then I would have to start from scratch & re-install all the software I have installed, besides redoing all the tweaks & modifications I 've made to the Windows 7 OS since day one---over a year ago.
Really not how I want to spend the next week or two +/-.
I'd like to clone the orig. 500GB HDD & all its contents to a new 1TB HDD.
Sounds like where I want to go, but for 1 small issue. I've been told that if I do just that I will have about 500gb of new available space, but I was also told I won't be able to create any new drive partitions on the new HDD because of some way the existing partitions on the original HDD are created.
1. Is that true?
2. If not, where can I find a failsafe procedure for accomplishing the clone, & then creating 2 new partitions to cover the free space on the new drive.
3. If so, is there a work around? If there is what is the procedure (plse don't give me brain cramps with techno lingo..tnx)
Some additional information that might be important.
At present my HDD has this configuration:
Now that   ( Q ) Local Disk     Is diferent. It shows 0 bytes available & 0 bytes Used, & I dont have access to it.
My wife's computer...a different Laptop model CQ62... also has the same drive,
but hers is labeled as Microsoft Office 2010 Starter...also 0 bytes available & used---also no access to it, & like below, not showing in Dmgt.

Ok....it is done!!
I used my friends HDD CLONING DOCKING STATION exactly like this one, but he purchased it 2 years ago from a different seller.
All I did was take my Original 500GB Drive & placed it into slot A (the front slot - Master) & I placed the new Toshiba 1TB Drive into slot B (the second slot behind Slot A..the middle - Slave). I turned the power on the Box. I waited till the drives spun up & were ready, & then all I did was press the red button on the Box...
The 25% light started flashing & the cloning began....
About 40 minutes later the 50% light started flashing & the 25% light stayed steady.
This meant that 25% of the process was done, & it was proceeding to 50%. \
This sequence continued until eventually all the lights were on steady (25% thru 100%) which meant the clone was complete.
I estimate it took about 2 hours & 15 minutes to clone completely.
I shut down the Box by turning off the power. I then removed both drives.
I carefully installed the new drive into the notebook computer, & reinserted the battery, & I plugged in the notebook's power supply/charger/adapter.
I then crossed my fingers & hit the notebook's power button.
Within seconds my notebook was booting up as always. I just had to check to make sure I really did install the new drive...& yes the one on the desk was the original, which definitely meant that the drive booting my notebook was indeed the new drive I just cloned to.
My notebook booted flawlessly!! without a hitch. Exactly as it always had.
I used My Computer Management Administrative tool--Disk Management & made a simple volume for the 450+ GB of free space, assigning the next available drive letter -- in my case Drive (F) & I named it as well.
Everything worked perfectly, I can read & write to the new partition/volume. As I noted earlier, I probably wont be able to boot from anything but my (C) Drive, but that's fine for me.
So, what did I learn?
Well, firstly, my Compaq Presario CQ57-105TU can upgrade to 1TB of HDD without any modifications.
Using the Cloning method I did definitely saved me at least 1 full weeks of re-installation work if I chose the Fresh install method using the Backup/Rescue Disks I created when the computer first was started way back when.
Outside of the 2+ hours of time it took to clone the drive, the 15 +/- minutes to originally remove & reinstall the drive, & the time it took to assign the new free space a drive letter (all of 5-10 minutes) the procedure was a clear cut simple one, which I know could have been done otherwise, but not as simply as the method I chose.

I'm so glad all your fears & roadblocks were not realized, & in the end it was possible to accomplish the task contrary to our initial concerns---matter in factly with the greatest of ease.

Hey.
I have one of the last generation Macbooks and my hard drive died on me again. this the second hard drive and I only have the device for 1 year and 10 months.
Last time it fell under warranty but that has expired by now. So I am left with following questions:
1) Is it normal for a Macbook to kill 2 hard drives in less then 2 years? Could it be somthing about my Macbook specific or the way that I use it?
2) I don't really feel like spending at least 200 euro's at my Apple reseller to have a new hard disk installed... So I was wondering:
2.a which hard drives are suited for my type Macbook
2.b where do I find them / at which price (within Europe / Belgium)
2.C where do I find a manual about how to install it myself?

Hard drives do fail. That is an inescapable fact and a primary reason why backups are always recommended.
Two hard drives to fail within two years, although unusual, would have nothing to do with your Mac and more to do with the actual hard drive.

Replacing the hard drive in your model MacBook is very easy. Instructions on how to do so are even in the User's Manual that came with your MacBook. If you no longer have the manual, you can download it from here:

Additionally there are also excellent tutorials on youtube - just type something like "MacBook hard drive replacement" or similar in the search field.
Internal 2.5" SATA hard drives can be bought virtually anywhere and are very cheap - a 500GB internal 2.5" SATA hd, for example can be found on-line for as little as 50 Euros (maybe less).

Windows 2000 has been largely abandoned (and with VERY GOOD reason) why on earth would you want to install that outdated unstable OS? It's plagued with security issues bugs and BSOD issues from being unsupported so long (even when it WAS supported) chances are no drivers were made compatable with that OS for your machine as XP is a totally different monster you likely would not find drivers for 70+% of your hardware. I'd 110% advise against even trying it XP is the oldest supported windows OS anymore an even it is about to lose support very VERY soon (if it hasn't yet already). I can't stress enough how much of a bad idea (and without any advantages by doing so) it would be to even attempt this.

It depends on the model MBP you own. Early 2008 only addresses up to 6GBs.. and then it goes up from there model to model.
See OWC and http://www.macsales.com for assitance on deciding how much.. If you plan to run Parallels and Windows as a VM, or do video editing etc. you'll probably need more memory. Otherwise mende1 is correct.

I don't think it's a SATA1/2 issue. More likely it's a cloning issue. When cloning your old hard drive to your new one, install the new one in your ThinkPad and put the old one on the SATA-> USB adapter (or whatever you're using to connect). Make sure to tell True Image to include the MBR/Track 0, and to install to active, primary partition on your new drive.
What version of True Image are you using?

How to Install Coldfusion 8 64-bit on Small Business Server 2008 64-bit
I ran Coldfusion 8 on SBS 2003 Premium for 6 months with no problems. When we finally decided to cut over to SBS 2008, that’s when everything went to hell. I tried for weeks to get Coldfusion 8 to install properly on the new SBS 2008 64-bit box. During the course which, I found bits and pieces of information for Vista 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 64-bit installations. There are some distinct differences, however, with SBS 2008 since it runs core Web applications like OWA, RWW and Companyweb. After countless unsuccessful attempts, one of which completed corrupted the box, I found the solution.
I have attempted in this white paper to detail the steps to assist others who may be in a similar situation. I don’t make any warranty for the information, but so long as you follow the steps carefully you should be fine. BTW, for those of you who say Adobe offers free technical support for licensed users, that’s not entirely true. Like I said, I purchased CF8 and originally installed it on an SBS 2003 Premium box. After we cut over to SBS 2008 and encountered problems, Adobe wouldn’t provide any technical support without charging. Moreover, based on my initial conversations with Adobe’s technical team, no one seemed to know much about running 64-bit on SBS.
From my understanding, only two versions of Coldfusion 8 can be installed in 64-bit: Enterprise and Developer. The “normal” install (which I paid a grand for) can only be deployed in 32-bit mode – gee, THANKS Adobe! By the way, in Developer mode only two distinct IPs can access the site in addition to the localhost. Any additional IPs will result in a CFML error message stating that the maximum number of IPs have been exceeded. At any rate, take your time and follow the steps to achieve a successful installation.
PRE-INSTALLATION TASKS
Back Up SBS
It’s always a good practice to backup your server before deploying any kind of major system changes. Although this step is optional, I recommend it in case you need to restore your server for any reason. Bear in mind, if your system ever gets totally corrupted, you cannot restore back from the twice daily incremental backup images alone. You will need a full backup with system recovery information to restore. Here are the basic steps:
Click: Start > Programs > Administrative Tools. Right-click “Windows Server Backup” and choose “Run as administrator”.
Click “Backup Once” under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Choose the “Different Options” radio button under Backup Options.
Choose the “Custom” radio button. What we’re primarily interested in here is backing up the OS – not your data partitions or attached drives.
Select the “SYSTEM (C)” checkbox, uncheck any others. Also, ensure that the “Enable system recovery” checkbox is selected before continuing on.
Under ‘Specify Destination Type’, I usually select the “Local drives” radio button and point it to a Terrabyte USB drive I use for backups. You can point this to a tape drive, or select the “Remote shared folder” radio button if you map to a UNC path to store your backup images. Just remember, make sure that whatever path you select can readily be accessed in the event of an emergency. Also, make sure the “Verify after writing (recommended)” checkbox is selected.
Under ‘Specified Advanced Option’, I usually select the “VSS full backup” radio button instead of the default since I don’t use a 3rd party backup product. If like me you rely solely on SBS for your backups, choose the full backup option.
Confirm everything and click “Backup”. This process may take several hours depending on the size of your system.
Verify ISAPI Filters:
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane.
In the center pane under IIS, double click the “Modules” icon to verify that the ISAPI native modules are already installed for IIS. If it’s set up correctly you should see two entries:
IsapiFilterModule %windir%\System32\inetsrv\filter.dll
IsapiModule %windir%\System32\inetsrv\isapi.dll
If either of these modules are missing, you will need to re-install these (google for a solution).
Set Up Development Environment
Create a directory for your CFML files outside of the default Windows location (e.g., default is usually C:\inetpub\wwwroot\). For the purpose of our install, I created a directory on a separate disk called: D:\DEV.
Copy and paste your CFML files and directories into the new DEV root Web directory. This will eventually be the directory where the Coldfusion installer places the CFIDE and CFDOCS folders.
Open IIS Manager and double-click the server instance in the left hand pane. Expand the “Sites” folder. Right-click the Sites folder and select “Add Web Site”.
Enter a name in the “Site Name” box (e.g., “test-site”). You will notice that the system will automatically create a corresponding Application Pool with the same name. NOTE: this is important to prevent conflicts between the DefaultAppPool (needed for SBS Web apps like OWA, RWW, etc.) and the application pool needed for Coldfusion to function properly in SBS 2008.
Point the “Physical Path” to the directory you created in step #1 above (e.g., “D:\DEV”).
Don’t worry about testing the connection. If you click “Test Settings” you may receive a warning that IIS cannot verify access to path (D:\DEV). Don’t worry about this for the time being.
Under “Host name”, enter a DNS path to your site (e.g., “dev.test-site.com”). Click “OK”.
Configure Application Pools for Installation
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane. Click on “Application Pools” to display the list of server application pools in the center pane.
In the “Actions” pane on the right-hand side, click “Set Application Pool Defaults”.
Change “Enable 32-Bit Applications” - the second item from the top – from “False” to “True”, and then click “OK”. NOTE: if you skip this step, Coldfusion will not properly create the required mappings during the install. We will change this setting back after the installation completes – more on this later.
Modify the application.host.config File for 64-Bitness
Click: Start > Programs > Accessories. Right-click “Notepad” and choose “Run as administrator”.
Open the config file from within Notepad – default location: C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config
Do a search and change this one line from:
<add name="PasswordExpiryModule" image="C:\Windows\system32\RpcProxy\RpcProxy.dll" />
To this:
<add name="PasswordExpiryModule" image="C:\Windows\system32\RpcProxy\RpcProxy.dll" preCondition="bitness64" />
Restart the IIS Admin service.
Set HTTP Compression
According to some threads I read, the http compression module can cause errors if you don’t disable it globally. To remedy this, perform the following:
Click: Start > Programs > Accessories. Right-click “Command Prompt” and choose “Run as administrator”.
At the command prompt, change directory to intetsrv by typing: cd inetsrv
Run the following command:
C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv>appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /-[name='xpress']
This will turn off HTTP compression for all sites in IIS.
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane. Double-click the “Compression” icon in the IIS section of the center pane.
Uncheck all of the boxes, then click the “Apply” button under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Recheck all of the boxes, then click the “Apply” button under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Restart the IIS Admin service. This should enable compression and coldfusion to work at the same time.
NOTE: if for some reason you need to reverse this, run the following command from the command prompt:
C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /+[name='xpress',doStaticCompression='false',dll='%windir%\system32\inetsrv\suscomp.dll']
INSTALLATION TASKS
Download the 64-bit installation package from Adobe – filename: coldfusion-801-wind64.exe.
Right-click the file and select “Run as administrator”.
Accept the terms of the License Agreement.
If you have an Enterprise license, enter it. For our purposes, just click the “Developer Edition” checkbox.
Select “Server configuration” – the default radio button.
I deselected all subcomponents and can’t guarantee that you’ll arrive at the same results if you select additional items like “.NET Integrated Services”. It should be fine, particularly if you install documentation. My preference was to keep the install as plain vanilla as possible.
Select the directory path for Coldfusion to install into – default is :C\Coldfusion
THE NEXT TWO STEPS ARE CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS. Unselect “All IIS Websites” and select the “Configure specific IIS Website or another web server” radio button. Click “Add”, and then select your test Web site (e.g., “test-site”) under “IIS Web Site”. Hit “OK”.
Do NOT use the default directory path for the CF Administrator location (e.g., default path: “C:\inetpub\wwwroot”). Instead, point the installer to your new DEV root Web directory (e.g., “D:\DEV”). The bottom line, you want the installer to place the CFIDE directory and files within this folder, alongside your other CFML files and folders.
Enter an Administrator password.
Choose to Enable RDS, or not. I enable this by preference but it is not required. This allows you to make updates to files using a CFML editor directly vs. having to move/FTP the files over if you’re working remotely. Opponents to this argue that it’s potentially less secure, but for a lower environment I don’t see this as a major concern.
Confirm everything to kick off the install.
If all goes well you should see a message at the end stating that the install was successful. I recommend you uncheck the box that asks you to open the CF Administrator in the default Web browser after the install. NOTE: we will open it a different way during the post-installation tasks. The worst thing that will happen if you forget to uncheck the box is that you might receive an error that the command prompt hung – not a big deal – just close it and move on to the next (final) steps.
POST-INSTALLATION TASKS
Verify CF Installation:
The installation will create a new folder in your program group: Start > Programs > Adobe > Coldfusion 8. The default “Administrator” link will not work because it points to the wrong path: http://127.0.0.1/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm. The “127.0.0.1” or “localhost” path as you may recall in IIS, points by default to the “C:\inetpub\wwwroot” directory. Our CFIDE files, however, are located within: D:\DEV.
To bring up the CF Administrator logon page, open up a Web browser and replace the “http://127.0.0.1” part of the path with the DNS path name to your CF environment (e.g., http://dev.test-site.com/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm).
This should bring up the Coldfusion Administrator Login screen. Enter in the Administrator password you created during the install to log in and configure your application server.
Verify that your test-site renders correctly by typing in your test URL into a Web browser (e.g., http://dev.test-site.com).
Fix Application Pool Defaults to Re-enable SBS Web Applications:
At this point, Coldfusion Administrator and your test CMFL Web site should be working properly. The problem is, default SBS Web applications like OWA, RWW and Companyweb will throw errors and fail to start. Fortunately, this is easily remedied by performing the following steps:
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane. Click on “Application Pools” to display the list of server application pools in the center pane.
In the “Actions” pane on the right-hand side, click “Set Application Pool Defaults”.
Change “Enable 32-Bit Applications” - the second item from the top – from “True” to “False” this time. This should re-enable the SBS applications, which would otherwise result in 500 errors (e.g., OWA, RWW, Companyweb, etc.). There is no need to restart IIS.
Open a Web browser and test that you can once again connect to OWA, RWW and Companyweb successfully.
In IIS click to highlight the application pool for your new site (e.g., “test-site”). In the right-hand pane, click “Advanced Settings”. Ensure that “Enable 32-Bit Applications” – second item from the top – is set to “True” for this application pool specifically.

First, it would be a good idea for you to specify what distro of Linux you're using, as not all are supported by Adobe.

In a nutshell, CF expects the 32-bit version of libc.so.6 to be in /lib, but it's probably not. You might be able to modify the installer to point to the correct location for that file, or you might be able to create a symlink to the file - but as the above link describes, creating a symlink might have negative consequences.
As for installing CF 8 64-bit, that's only available with Enterprise, not Standard. If you want CF Standard 64-bit, you need to upgrade to CF 9.
