How to install os9 on separate partition alongside os 10.3?

Hi - I would like to know how to install os9.2.2 on a separate partition (with os10.3 on the other) so I can boot in REAL os9 (not classic) to use pro tools free which will not run on classic - (my old g3 I used this for has died) - I have recovered the hard disc contents and what I really want to do is just copy the entire 0s9 system (without having to reinstall it) to a partition - I know how to reboot the machine into os x (hold down x key during start up), but;
1) - can I boot the os 9 partition and if so how?
2) - will this work? - I remember someone telling me it was possible a few years ago, I just can't remember who -
any help greatly appreciated
Thanks!
James

Hi, l. No Aluminum Powerbook can boot into straight OS 9, so you'll have to a) use Pro Tools Free in Classic mode, b) get an older OS-9-bootable computer to run it on, c) buy the real Pro Tools to run on your top-of-the-line computer, or d) use some other application instead.
No Mac has ever been able to boot into an older OS version than the one(s) that were installed on it at the factory.

  • How to install Mavericks on MBR partition (or make GUID)

    I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion, and on a separate partition, I have bootcamp running Windows 8. I went to install Mavericks today, and I was greeted with an error message saying that I could not install Mavericks on my Macintosh HD partition (or any other partition) because they are all MBR partition map schemes instead of GUID.
    I really don't want to delete either my Macintosh HD or my Windows partition in order to make my hard drive have a GUID scheme, and googling this issue, I've only found out how to do this by backing up my computer and resotring it, which again, I don't really want to do because I always end up losing data that I want to keep.
    As a note, I am using rEFInd, and previously rEFIt, in order to boot my Windows partition easier since it makes a pseudo MBR (hybrid MBR/GUID). I think the problem may be that rEFInd made my disk "think" that it is an MBR partition in order to make Windows boot, when in reality, it's GUID. I have no clue how to fix this though. From what I know, I don't believe OSX will even run or install on an MBR partition, so why it says my Macintosh HD is an MBR partition, I have no clue.

    Winclone 3 will clone the Windows partition.
    I don't know why you think you need rEFInd or rEFId (not being updated), since Windows 7 and 8 are GUID aware and supported with bootcamp.  Just hold the option/alt key down for Startup Manager, no third party EFI firmware program needed.
    If you had a triple boot system with Linux or Windows XP, then I could understand why.
    My advice is to clone both OS X and BootCamp Win 8 to external drives, uninstall the EFI software or preferably erase the entire drive, reset the NVRAM, reinstall OS X, then reverse clone OS X (while booted from the clone), then setup Bootcamp and then Winclone that back on.
    Only by erasing the ENTIRE disk0 can the GUID be reset.

  • How to install lion in another partition

    I have a macbook pro with approx. 50gigs remaining on the HD, and I want to install Lion on a separate partition so I can still use my rosetta based apps such as quicken etc.
    What's the best and saftest way for me to go about doing this?
    best,

    Dynamically partition the HD to add the additional volume. If the new one's size is larger than what's used on the boot volume, then use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone the boot drive to it. Boot with the clone and ensure it works like the original. If so, DL Lion, save a copy to another location, since the dumb app deletes itself when installing, then install Lion onto the clone. If the new volume can't hold the boot drive's contents, then boot with the original, DL Lion, save a copy, install Lion onto the new volume, and, on first boot, use the Setup Assistant to transfer the users folder and apps. You'll have to figure out what you can't migrate. Personally, if you can't do the first, get an ext FWHD and put the clone and Lion onto it.

  • How to install OS9 in OSX with OS9 disk?

    I just got a G4 with OSX installed and no disks I want to load OS9 for classic support with the OS9 disk I own. Do I need to do anything special to install? All the forums mention the OSX disk which wasn't included in the purchase I made. I don't suppose I could just copy the os9 system folder from my old computer and place it where it belongs in OSX ? Thanks for the help. CJ

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.I don't suppose I could just copy the os9 system folder from my old computer and place it where it belongs in OSX ?Yes, you may. Andrew is right. I have done it many times and it works perfectly. The beauty of doing this is that you don't have to do all the updates that you would have to do if you installed from disk.
    The only concern I would have is whether Mac OS 9 drivers were installed when the disk was formatted for OS X. If they weren't, OS 9 would not work no matter how you installed. They very well might have been installed, though as DU usually has it selected by default.
    Good luck.

    Hi
    Sounds like that you didnt understand how the Toshiba recovery procedure works. Normally you have two partitions on the HDD after you start it the first time. On the second partition there is a folder called HDDrecovery. This folder contains an image of factory settings and you can start this installation if you go in advanced boot menu (F8) and select Repair my computer.
    But this is only possible if the preinstalled OS is still installed. If you install another OS like XP, you can only use the Toshiba recovery disk.
    So Dr.Lamp is right, in your case you can only restore the factory settings using Toshiba recovery disk.
    I hope I could help you a little bit.

  • How to install windows on separate internal drive?

    Hello,
    I've been at this problem for a few days and need some help if anyone has a clue.
    I have a late 2008 macbook pro 15". I've taken out my optical drive to install a SSD so that I can run both the existing internal drive and SSD as a DIY Fusion Drive. I'm in need of Windows now and tried to partition the existing fusion drive like I would normally do to install bootcamp. This doesn't seem to work. I then unfused the fusion drive back to two separate hard drives with the OS X Yosemite on the SSD and I want to install Windows on the existing Hard Drive. I've created a bootable Windows USB through the Bootcamp Assistance, but when it comes time to install the Windows install menu does not pop up. I would get a blank black screen which then I would have to restart and boot up into my OS X. In the OS X I can see that a bootcamp drive has been created, but it doesn't show up when I hold Option during the reboot.
    If anyone knows what's going one, please let me know!
    Thank you!

    Rather easy enough to do. People install XP and Vista all the time on 2, 3rd or 4th drive in Mac Pro. I know Vista 64-bit on Mac Pro has best support for addressing RAM and drivers.

  • Installing OSX on separate partition

    I have an external HD which I partitioned to use part of it for TM, and 12Gb for a separate install of OSX to give me a bootable drive if I ever need it. I've looked at the install disk, and it looks straight forward, but before I actually try it, I wanted to ask here if there are any pitfalls or tricks to doing this install. Also, I'd prefer not to install all the Apple apps as I don't need them for this emergency bootable disk. Is there any simple way to install OSX without installing all the apps that normally come with it? If it's very convoluted to install without them, I'll just install them.
    Thanks in advance for the help.

    There is always confusion on APM (Apple Partition) vs. GUID (Intel partition) for bootable disks. To install on a intel mac, yes you need to start with a GUID partition. But you can boot from an APM partition (on intel) as well if you clone the existing bootable partition to a new partition.
    If you have an external drive with TM on it you can resize the TM partition and reclaim some space on it then you have two partitions. It is easier to clone your boot drive with Carbon Copy or Super Duper than reinstall it. You can always then delete stuff you don't want - but a clone is far superior to a bootable only spare partition in case you really monkey things up as you can clone the entire boot drive back.
    External drives are so cheap everyone should have a bootable clone and update that clone frequently. With the paid for version of Super Duper it is very fast, updating only the changes.
    So best advice is this:
    Leave what you have alone, let TM have a TM drive.
    Buy a cheap (preferably firewire) drive as big as your boot drive or at least as big as what you have on it now. They sell 500GB ones here for $100.
    Partition it GUID - if it is brand new you may as well but it doesn't matter - the fact is that it will be FAT32 99% of the time as they are all for Windows anyway.
    Get CCC or Super Duper - both are free but the paid version of Super Duper is $20 and superior the next time.
    Do a Complete clone. Boot from it to be sure.
    Update weekly.

  • How to install OS9.2.2 on Titanium 867

    With fresh OS 10.4 install... When i boot from the OS9 CD it says this Software cannot run on this macintosh. When i go to install after booting in OS 10.4 Classic will not start and i cannot select the drive with OS 10.4 on it. It is the only drive on the laptop.
    How can i get system 9.2.2 on my Titanium 867

    It may be that you don't have OS9 drivers on your hard drive. The only way to install them is to reformat the drive. If all you want is Classic and don't need to boot into OS9 you can drag a System Folder from an external drive.

  • How to install OS9 with OS X?

    Okay, here goes. I got a Titanium Powerbook 400mhz from my sister, she gave it to me because NOTHING worked. So, I bought a used DVD-Rom drive, a used battery, and using Firewire Target mode, I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of OS 10.3.9 with the DVD from my G5 tower. So, here's my question, can I simply install a copy of OS 9 onto the same drive without disrupting my current OS 10.3.9? I'd like OS 9 on there so my kids can play their games, the majority of which are OS 9. Any help would be great, thanks.
    Tom

    Yes, you can install OS 9 onto the same volume.  However, when you initially formatted the drive you had an option to install Mac OS 9 drivers.  If you did not choose that option then you can only use OS 9 through the OS X Classic emulator.  You cannot boot directly into OS 9 unless the OS 9 drivers were installed when the drive was formatted.
    To install the Mac OS 9 drivers you would need to re-partition the drive which is a destructive process that will remove all the data currently installed.
    There is afirmware update needed for your particular model.  The update must be installed while booted directly into OS 9.1 or higher.  You may want to check with your sister to find out if the update has already been installed.

  • How to install tiger on external firewire drive

    I'd like to upgrade my dual 2GHz Power PC G5 to 10.5, but I need access to OS9 from time to time. To solve this I wanted to install 10.4 with OS9 on my external HDD. I partitioned my Western Digital drive (connected by FW800) and installed 10.4 from the install disk. However, when I select it as the startup disk, the startup fails to identify the disk and starts from the internal drive.
    I tried to follow instructions from an old post, but one thing that was different was that when partitioning my harddrive, I did not have the option for GUID, I just had the option for Apple Partion Map. Oddly, now that I installed OSX 10.4, the option for GUID appears, but still seams incorrect since I'm on a G5 CPU.
    Any ideas why I can't boot from the external drive? Any suggestions on how to install OS9 and migrate my user folders over when I get it working?
    Thanks,
    Marcus

    Many Western Digital firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. From this WD support page:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787
    The following external hard drives are not bootable on Power PC based Macintosh computers systems through USB/FireWire 1394(a/b):
    * My Book Essential Edition
    * My Book Essential Edition 2.0
    * My Book Home Edition
    * My Book Mirror Edition
    * My Book Office Edition

    * My Book Studio Edition II
    * My Passport Studio
    * My Passport Elite
    * My Passport Essential

    If your drive is new and on the list, I would try to return it and get a different brand.

  • How to install windows in my mac book pro 2011

    Hi,there
    i brought the macboo pro on Nov. but i can not install the windows 7. onec I installed the system, the mac system will be destoried and disappeared.
    so, is there anyone can help me solve the problem, or teach me how to install the windows7
    Regard
    June

    Hi,
    What are your Mac's specs, ie RAM, hard drive size, video memory, etc...? If you MacBook Pro is brand-new, frankly, don't bother installing Windows on a separate partition: install VirtualBox, create a sizeable (as in, 20 to 30Gb) virtual hard drive, then install Windows on it.
    The pros? You can use your copy of Windows as if it were installed on a separate partition, without the hassle of partitioning. You can even switch from OS X to Windows without having to reboot.
    The cons?  Windows won't feel as responsive as it would on its own partition (though from what I hear about Boot Camp, even that is debatable...), and you'd rather have a solid amount of RAM, empty disk space (for swapping) and video memory if you want to enjoy the experience.
    Up to you, but worth a try...

  • How to install Windows 7 on MacBook with Tiger + Leopard upgrade using Boot Camp

    Hi,
    I've had Vista installed on a separate partition on my MacBook for a while, but wanted to upgrade to Windows 7. I've completely wiped the HDD, re-installed Tiger, upgraded to Leopard and installed Windows 7 using boot camp from within OSX. However, I now can't boot back into OSX - I believe it's because I don't have the latest version of Boot Camp within Windows 7 (it doesn't appear on the task bar), but I also don't have a full copy of Leopard, only the upgrade disk.
    Is there any way to (a) boot back into OSX (I've tried holding down the option key and this doesn't work) and (b) installing a version of Boot Camp that will enable me to switch between both operating systems as I was when Vista was installed & without having to purchase the full copy of Leopard?
    Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Elliot.

    Try to boot from the 10.4 disk then and "Repair Disk". If you can, then try booting from the 10.5 disk and do the same.
    Have you tried holding down the C key also when trying to boot from the Install disks? It could take 30 seconds to a minute or more for the C key/Option key reboots. The Mac DVD HAS to be the OS installer disk not the applications installer, etc,. Sorry if I keep bringing this up.
    You have to keep holding it down the whole time it boots, either it will bypass it and reboot into Windows or it should get to the boot loader window with at least Windows showing up.
    If you can still boot into Windows with no problems then Windows SHOULD show up in the boot loader window. (C key/Option key) It's hardware related, it's the computers manual way of looking for a bootable OS if there's no OS installed yet.
    Don't forget to disconnect any USB devices until you get it fixed.
    Also try to boot from the Windows  installer disk and "Repair Windows" and see what happens.
    Other then your DVD drive may be on it's last legs, I can't really think of any reason you can't boot from the Mac DVD's.  All the other post's I searched for eventually got the DVD boot working, even 10.6 and 10.7 are having that issue, tho rarely.
    elliotfromnewark wrote:
    Hi, ...........inserting the Leopard disk once in Windows to install boot camp and it says that the version on the DVD is only compatible with XP SP2 or Vista.................
    Don't run the installer this time, if a window pops up to "Run" or "Open",  just open it. If it doesn't open the DVD and look for the BootCamp.exe. Right click on the .exe (or whatever it's called) and select the trouble shoot compatibility mode and select Vista. Yes, I know you have W7. See if that works.
    It may have buggered the Mac OS side so you may have to get DiskWarrior (worked for some) or the like in order to fix it. It would definitely be useful in the future.

  • How to restart from a SL partition in a Lion preinstalled Imac?

    Dear All,
    I've been studying about this issue for a while and just got my 21.5" Imac core i7 2.8GHz yesterday.
    It took me a while to figure out how to install SL on a partition in target disk mode instead of installing it with the disc. But when I try to reboot with the SL partition, I still get the gray screen with some coding and saying unsupported CPU and asking me to shut down the machine. I wonder if it's because the SL disc I'm using is from a previous Macbook Pro free upgrade? Should I go get the retail version? Will it be any different?
    Anyone did install and running SL on a Lion preinstalled Imac successfully?
    Thank you for sharing your advice or opinion!

    You cannot use an original OS X install disc from another computer for a couple of reasons, first it would be theft because it's a violation of the licensing agreement. In addition the original media is machine specific and will not work on any other machine. You can attempt to install a retail license of Snow Leopard however even that may not work, whether it works or not is a case by case situation. Traditionally a version of OS X that was released prior to your machines release will not work. However the current iMacs were released with Snow Leopard in May and Lion was released July 20th. It's possible a SL installation will work but also possible it will not.

  • Partition external hard drive and install OS9

    I have a Lacie external hard drive, 350 GB, and would like to partition it and install OS9 in one of the partitions so that I can run some of the applications I have that won't run in OSX. What do I need to do. How much space should I partition the volumes into, and how many. Do the applications need to be in the same volume as OS9. I also want a volume for backup using "Time Machine" of OSx (leopard) which is in my internal drive in my iMac G5 with 80 GB., and another for backup of files that are in my internal hard drive.

    Hi, falcontech -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions -
    Bad news, perhaps.
    Your G5 is not OS 9 bootable; no G5 is.
    In addition, Leopard (OSX 10.5) does not support Classic (OS 9 used as a program while the machine is booted to OSX).
    In order to make use of OS 9 as Classic, you would need to also install a bootable version of OSX 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.3 (Panther), boot the machine to that and then use Classic. Depending on which model it is, your iMac G5 model originally came with a version of either OSX 10.3 or OSX 10.4; its original disk set also can install Classic.
    As far as partition sizes go, I would allow at least 20GB for the OSX/Classic partition. Although Classic (OS 9) is not fussy about whether its programs are on the same volume as OS 9 is, it would make little sense to have them elsewhere. Among other things, having the OS 9 programs on the same volume as OS 9 would make responses a bit faster since seeking would be restricted to just one volume.
    As far as the remainder goes, your needs would best determine the partition sizes.

  • How to install Mac OS 9.1 on a partition?

    I've partitioned my internal 233 GB hard drive with os 10.4.3 taking up most of the space, which I installed.
    I now have a 20 GB partition for os 9.1, but I'm not sure how to install it. My computer won't restart using the os 9.1 disc; it just goes over to os 10. I'd like to have a separate disc with 9.1 that I can use exclusively for classic gaming.
    How do I install the os on the now erased and empty 20 GB partition?
