I see that OWC and other vendors offer solid state drives for my iMac, but they don't explain or show how to install this device. Does it replace my internal hard drive or work with it somehow? I am interested in speeding up my computer's performance especially when working in iPhoto and iMovie where I have tens of thousands of image files. Right now it takes forever just to boot up these applications, and once up, they frequently crash. I have installed the max RAM for my machine (2 x 4gb ddr3).

An iMac 9,1 is an early 2009 model. That should be before Apple started using proprietary hard drive cables, so you can install the SSD to replace your hard drive. This OWC video tells you how to do that (of course you'd need the 3.5" frame to put the smaller SSD into, and OWC offers that). Otherwise, it's no different than replacing the hard drive. You might want to confirm with OWC that the early 2009 iMacs don't have the proprietary hard drive cable. I'm pretty sure those didn't come into play until late 2009.
One other thing, you should know what SATA speed your system supports, which is probably SATA I or SATA II. I put an SATA III speed SSD in a mac mini which supports SATA II speeds, and it ran at SATA I speed. Swapped it out for an SATA II drive, and it runs just fine at SATA II speeds. They are supposed to be backwards compatible, however that's at least one exception. You can see your speed in about this mac, more info, system report, then serial ATA.

Hi, There are any number of different ways to move the data from one drive to another. My preference (the last one) would be to do a clean fresh install using system disks because of the way SSD drive's lay down data.
I'm not going to go into detail laying out HOW you do this. I assume you can do a Google (or other) engine search for details.
1) SystemMigration - this is a built in MAC OS X utility that allows you to move system + data from one drive to another
2) Do a Time Machine backup of everything and then use TM to restore everything the way it is or REINSTALL a clean install of the data+new system on the replacement drive.
3) Carbon copy Cloner is a great cloning application and can "block clone" from a smaller drive to a replacement drive of the same or larger size
The above 3 methods assume you will transfer ALL the date, good bad & ugly, from the magnetic media to the SSD. This is the most efficient method, but from personal experience you may end up not getting
the faster boot up time and disk responsiveness you would expect from an SSD. I can't say why; it may have to do with the way data is initially "laid down" on the SSD OR all the extra "jetsam and flotsam" that accompanies a used system drive - "(how's THAT for non techno-geek detail).
I have noticed that Drive clones are only as good as the source from which they are taken and that when I cloned a magnetic Lion 10.6 Drive to an SSD, there was no significant advantage in boot times with a 10.6 Lion boot taking anywhere from 45 to 60 to 75 seconds (pretty much he same for magnetic drives).
I then did an original clean system install on the SSD as if I were doing it for the first time....updated it completely and THEN and only then did I reinstall all the apps individually followed by cloining the data files.
By doing this, I was able to cut the boot time on that SSD (and all subsequent ssd clones of the original SDD) to 25 to 30 seconds.
NOT BAD. Just simply cloning what you already have is a simple option, but if you're looking for optimal SSD performance, I'd opt for a fresh clean instll of everything.

Your slow response of the system could be caused by many different factors. From a corrupted install of the OS to faulty hardware in the system.
The only way to test it is to completely erase the drive, Repartition it, and reinstall the operating system, OS X, and all your programs. If after a Clean install of OS X, and selectively installing your programs one at a time, and testing after each install to find out why the system is running so slow. If right after installing the OS the system is slow to respond then it is likely a hardware problem. If it runs fine then it was a software problem.
If you find it is a hardware problem the only thing to do is take the system to Apple for diagnosis and repair or exchange.
If you find it is a software problem then do not install that piece of software.

Yes, you need an adapter to convert the 2.5" drive to 3.5". Here's OWC adapter. Included on that plage I linked to is a little video illustrating how to use it. If you buy some other adapter installation is basically the same.
As for how to make it your boot drive, there are a number of ways you can do that. The procedures make no difference whether is it a SSD or HDD.
The first way would be to do a full clean reinstall of your system on to the boot drive. Then if you need to, use Migration Assistant to move stuff from your "old" HDD boot drive to the new boot drive.
The second is simply clone your existing HDD to your SSD.
Once you created your new boot drive you can change your Startup Disk system preferences to default to boot from it.
No matter which method you use, always have backups before doing anything, or at least do not wipe out the original HDD until you are sure your system is fully working with the new SSD (wait a week), and then still create new backups of your new system.
Some other considerations. Persoanlly I recommend OWC for SSD. It's where I got my 120GB. Assume an Snow Leopard installation needs about 25GB to work with enough room to expand its vm space, etc. So depending on what you want to place on the SSD you probably be "safe" with anything from a 60GB to 120GB. YOu might consider placing your home directory on a HDD leaving the SSD for the OS and what you consider "key" files. That's how I have my system set up.

I'm upgrading a Mac Pro 1,1 - My new SSD (2.5") just arrived, and documentation is minimal - not sure if I need a kit or adapter to install into one of the open drive bays. Crucial (usually no complaints with them) isn't very informative.

You'll actually need an adaptor such as the Icy Dock (this is what I use).
Don't forget that your SATA ports are limited to 300MB/s, so you won't get top SSD speeds.

Hello The pc comes with a hybrid harddrive with 16 GB express cache, and some say, that I am therefore not able to install SSD. The wish for SSD comes from the upcoming Win 10 which I would like to install on SSD alongside most used applications i.e. Office and such. Hi, There is a lot of confusion and frustration with using technology. Those two words are very common on many forums. I would suggest that you Google "SSD installaton guide" and you should find ample general documentation. Installation of a 2.5" SSD will require a special mounting kit for your PC.. HP should have what you need. Please review this thread. Frankly, you are not going to gain that much in performance by using a SSD verses your exisiting configuration.

Replace HDD with SSD is very simple in terms of hardware wise. Keeping all is a bit longer task. I've been using O&O DiskImage Pro to clone the HDD and restore back. Please also refer to this:

HP appears to have no maintenance guide available for this model series. What's up with that?
Please, do not offer the generic (and out-of-date) Pavilion 17 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide. It does not appear to apply to the 17z-F series. This guide instructs to remove the bottom service panel which I could have figured that out on my own. However, the 17z-F series does not appear to have any removable panels at all. I took an up-close look at the Pavilion 17z-F100. And, it does not have any removable panels on the underside, except for the battery. So, I presume the 17z-F200 to be the same.
I am a computer technician. And, this is the first laptop I have seen without any service panels. I am probably going to have to disassemble the entire outer-shell to install memory (or to replace the hard disk drive once the time comes). But, every laptop I have worked on in the past had its own special array of hidden screws or special tricks for disassembly. So, having a maintenance guide is a necessity to avoid damaging plastic mounts, clips, guides, etc.

^ See the last post of that thread. The writer made recovery disks from the new laptop, then installed the SSD and used the recovery disks to install the operating system and software onto the new SSD. (Didn't clone the hard drive, in other words.)
If you don't need to save settings and migrate files, is recovery-disks-to-SSD the best way to go?
I have a U505-S2012 Satelllite and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD sitting here, ready to go, LoL. But I didn't know whether it was even possible to make the recovery disks install to a SSD. Or make them install to a hard drive that's smaller than the original.

As for me it's no matter how to install win7 on the new SSD drive - fresh install, clone hdd or use Factory Recovey media. For the x220 I've used the 2nd and 3rd methods.
As for twiking of win7 after a not clean installation just use sw from Intel for their SSD or twik it youself during 10-15 min. Alignment is not a problem if you use an SSD with TRIM support.
If you need UEFI the only clean installation is the method.
