How to install Tiger on iBook G4

I have been given an iBook G4 and would like to upgrade it to Tiger 10.4 using my generic Tiger 10.4 upgrade disk. iBook will not start up from the Tiger disk even holding "C" key down. Also, restarting as a Target disk holding down "T" key, icon does not show up on my Power Mac G4. What am I doing wrong and what suggestions.

looks like 2 issues: iBook not booting from the upgrade disc, and iBook no mounting when in target mode
for the iBook not booting from the disc, see is you can boot PowerMac from the same disc to test the disc
if PowerMac boots, maybe iBook's optical drive is flaky, then you could try using external FireWire optical drive to try to boot from
to test the FireWrie, you can try to connect to PowerMac and use System Profiler, see what it says under FireWire
see if the iBook recognizes FireWire devices, if so, the issue could be with the drive on the iBook, anyways try those things first, see what happens

As long as the copy of Tiger that she has is the black retail version then there should be no problems.
Insert the DVD into the PB. Shut the PB down. Restart the PB holding the T key down until you see the big firewire Y jumping around. Connect the PB and the iBook with a firewire cable. The PB's HD and the loaded Tiger disk will appear in the iBook's Finder. Select the Tiger disk and double click on the 'Install OS X' icon. You will then be presented with a choice of destinations and a choice of installation options.
(You could, instead, start the iBook in Target Disk Mode and run the installation from the PB. Same difference.)
Providing your daughter has no problems with her existing Panther installation there is no reason why you shouldn't opt for the 'Upgrade' which will preserve all user settings, preferences, documents etc., although it would be wise to back up to another medium before you start. An external HD is ideal, but spare space in the PB would suffice for her 'Home' folder at least.
The other choices besides 'Upgrade' are Erase & Install which does exactly what it says, or Archive & Install.
Not knowing your level of expertise on Macs I don't want to possibly bore you with minutiae but feel free to ask if you're not clear on anything.

How to install Tiger on iBook with cd drive only?

SInce Tiger is on a DVD, I'm thinking I gotta do a target disk mode thing. Anyone else done that? What's the procedure?

The procedure is to hook the two machines up with a FireWire cable, and then hold down the T key while starting up the iBook. Doing this requires that both machines are capable of running the retail version of Tiger; some recent machines can't. You should not do this if the other machine is a G5; one person messed up their system by doing so. Otherwise, you shouldn't have any problems.

HDD crashed! How to install Tiger onto 867mhz G4 with no DVD drive??

Hi folks.
My trusty 867mhz G4 Quicksilver Powermac drive has finally konked out. It was running OS 9.2.2 before. Now I want to install Tiger as the OS.
Having only a CD drive (nope, can't read or write DVD's), how do I proceed to install Tiger (I have the original install disk) onto the brand new blank hard drive?
Possible tools that I have:
1) last generation 1.67mhz G4 powerbook
2) dual 2.5ghz G5 powermac
3) Lacie external firewire DVD drive
Things I have tried:
1) hold down "c" while starting up the Quicksilver with the Lacie DVD drive hooked up to it, hoping I can start up from the optical drive, which contains the Tiger install disk. Result: blank white screen that goes nowhere. Found out that the Lacie needs at least 10.3.9 to run.
I'm out of ideas.
Can someone tell me the right way to do this?

Didn't sleep at all last night, BUT, I did it!
1) Set the Quicksilver as a firewire target disk hooked up to my G4 1.67GHZ Powerbook. Result = frozen blue screen.
3) Set the Quicksilver as a firewire target disk hooked up to my dual 2.5GHZ G5 Power Mac. Result = frozen blue screen
So that got me thinking, the common thing about the Powerbook and Power Mac is that they both run Leopard. It makes sense to me that computers that already have Leopard installed will probably not run a Tiger installer.
So, I whip out the oldest and slowest computer I have, which is an old 550MHZ Titanium Powerbook, complete with 1 broken hinge, flickering screen and peeled paint. It runs Tiger. I set the Quicksilver as a firewire target disk hooked up to the Titanium Powerbook.
Voila! It works like a charm!
So for anyone facing the same problem, one of the possibilities is: you can do it with the computer set as a firewire target disk hooked up to another computer running nothing newer than Tiger.

How do install Tiger from an external USB drive?

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to Tiger. How do I install Tiger from my external USB DVD drive? Tiger only comes on DVD and my G4 only has a CD ROM as an internal drive. Is there a way to boot from an external USB DVD drive?

you obviously just cracked some known hardware restrictions that not even Apple knew how to do: Don't start up from an external USB device.
The procedure you described is the standard procedure for the startup manager. However, as Apple's article explains this does NOT work with USB-devices on PowerPC (G3, G4, G5) based Macs.

How to Install Tiger on a 1st series iMac via Ethernet?

I want to upgrade a 333MHz iMac to Tiger which has no firewire ports, only USB. I don't have an external HD to boot from, except my G5. I want to find out how I can install it via ethernet, is it possible? And if it is, how would I do it? Any help would be much appreciated.

First off, if you could install Tiger on that machine you would be limited to the first 8 GB of the hard disk:

That gives you very little room to work with for anything that needs to be on the boot partition.
Also if Jaguar hasn't been installed on the machine, you'll want to upgrade the Firmware before installing Jaguar or later on the machine, otherwise face the possibility of a permanently dark screen.

As you already have a PowerMac G5, let that be your Mac OS X machine, and network your iMac to the PowerMac G5 and leave the iMac in Mac OS 9.

I do not recommend upgrading the iMac G3 333 past 10.3.9 (though as you can see you'll still need the firmware update and be limited to 8 GB if you go to Mac OS X). Let the iMac G3 run what it is able to run according to Apple. Doing otherwise would be akin to putting a jet engine on a chariot. It may work, but then again, any attempted further upgrades would result in a serious jalopy of a machine.

How to install Tiger OVER Leopard?

Hi everyone,
So i just bought the brand spanking new Macbook Pros from the apple dealer the other day. I must say that i like it alot, but it came pre-installed with Leopard 10.5.
Now dont get me wrong, 10.5 is wonderful but i dont think i am ready for it yet because none of my programs that i use are compatible with it. As a result, i have a great computer with no programs to run.
I have decided i want to reinstall 10.4 back onto my harddrive and wipe out Leopard. I couldnt find anywhere in the apple shop that sold 10.4 (most likely because they are trying to phase it out), but i did find a copy of the Tiger installation disc that came with the PowerMac G5 (pre-intel) a few years ago.
I tried installing it, but it said "this program cannot be installed on this operating software". I basically just inserted the CD and double clicked "install" but i have a feeling the only way to get around this is to boot up the installation disc as a bootable disc, which i dont know how to do.
I have two quick questions for the seasoned veterans out there:
1) How do i install Tiger over my Leopard?
2) This is my first time using an Apple that is intel chip. Does Tiger have any complications with it?

You will have to contact AppleCare to obtain the Tiger installation discs required for your model. You cannot use a retail Tiger installation DVD or one from any PPC model. They will not work.
You might check with the software developers of your software to see if Leopard compatible versions aren't already available. Otherwise you might look for similar software that is compatible.
Most PPC-only software will run on Intel Macs via Rosetta emulation automatically.
If you do obtain the proper Tiger installation discs from AppleCare and decide to install it, then you will need to do an Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger, 4.6.2 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

I have external 80 GB USB 2.0 LaCie Hard Drive and want to install Tiger to it. But i have some problems...
I have bootable install DVD.
I'm inserting it, waiting, then choose language.
Then I'm starting Disc Utility, formatting whole drive to HFS+ filesystem, and then install Tiger to a new partition. All seems to be great, installation finishes, and says that i need to restart. Restaring... And my computer boots from DVD, not from HDD... Also, i looked in Startup Disc util, but thre is no my HDD, only boot DVD.
Also i've noticed in install log when installing process comes to end, some strange words:
-Disc partition is not MBR
-Can't set bootable device /dev/disk2s10
disk2s10 - its my HFS+ partition in external drive.
Maybe im doing something wrong? Wrong partitioning, etc.?
Please help me.

Without knowing how or what was on the USB drive (FAT32?) you might need to go into Disk Utility -> Partition -> Options and set the drive format to "GUID" from whatever it is now.
that should do the trick. PPC uses "APL" format which won't allow installing on an IntelMac.
I think "MBR" is probably "Mac Boot Record".
Anyway, give that a shot.

URGENT: Install Tiger on iBook without CD Drive or Firewire Drive

I have an iBook which needs Tiger installing.
However, the CD drive has pack up, and I dont have a Firewire External CD player, only a USB one.
Is there a way i can connect another Mac to the iBook by firewire cable and use that CD drive to install Tiger on the iBook?

These installs will work subject to license agreement:
1. Connect an external firewire drive to any machine.
2. Boot off CD and install on external firewire drive.
3. Clone back to same machine or move said hard drive internally into same
machine if it has the same interface inside the Firewire enclosure as inside the machine.
1. Setup an iMac G4 1.25 Ghz in Target mode with a broken optical drive.
2. Boot off Leopard on a second iMac G4 1.25 Ghz and connect the machine in step one to the machine in step 2.
3. Install Leopard or Tiger.
1. Boot off Firewire DVD drive the Leopard or Tiger installer.
2. Install Leopard on the same machine the drive is connected to.
These types of install will NOT work:
1. Setup an iBook G4 1.25 Ghz in target mode with a broken optical drive.
2. Boot off an iBook G4 1 Ghz and connect the machine step one to the machine in step 2.
3. Install Leopard or Tiger
1. Install on an external firewire hard drive from an iBook G4 1 Ghz Leopard or Tiger.
2. Connect an iBook G4 1.25 Ghz to the hard drive in step 1.
3. Clone back from the hard drive Leopard or Tiger (whichever is installed) or if the firewire hard drive case was a 2.5" hard drive Parallel ATA move the hard drive into the iBook.
The reason is that each vintage Mac, and each Mac model has distinct drivers.
In Target mode, the target machine (the machine you held the T key down) is assumed by the installer to be nothing more than an external drive to be a machine with the same configuration of the host machine because that's the only machine's firmware it can detect.
And by "work" I mean, the installation may appear it succeeds but circumstances such as kernel panics, and unsuccessful upgrades later will make the whole effort in vain.
Either replace the internal optical drive or attach an external Firewire DVD drive to install on a machine whose optical drive is broke, or get an identical Mac model to install using Target Disk Mode. If you don't have an identical machine, don't waste your effort on what can become an even worse install than had you left everything alone.

Combo Drive won't read DVDs - How to Install Tiger?

I have an iMac G5 with a Combo drive (Matshita CD-RW CW-8123) that no longer reads DVDs. It handles CDs fine. Other postings offer complaints about Super drives with similar problems, but I have found no solutions. My warranty has expired. I would like to install Tiger, but the installation disk is a DVD. So is the installation disk for iLife '06. Other postings have suggested that installing a new optical drive doesn't always fix the problem. Since I'll be paying for this, that doesn't sound sound like a promising option. Should I purchase an external drive? In the meantime, is there any other way to install Tiger without the DVD? I have other macs that work fine, so I really don't need the DVD to work properly except to install new software. Suggestions are welcome!

An external drive is a great option.
With that, you will likely get a much more capable drive than you would if you were stuck with only the models that will fit in your iMac.
For example, my PC has a 16x Dual-Layer DVD-R drive. But, most Apple compatible Internal drives are still limited to 8x.
So, you could likely get a much faster and more capable external drive than you could an internal drive for the same price.
With an external drive, you can also keep that drive should you get another machine. And, if you have more than one machine, you can connect the drive to whichever machine requires it at the moment. So, essentially, you can upgrade all your systems with just one DVD drive.
And, best of all, you have a product that is covered by it's own warranty, and not subject to how you installed it. And, you don't have to tinker inside your machine.
Also, OS 10.4.x "Tiger" is available on CD-ROM. So, you could send in for the replacement disks if you have the retail box of OS 10.4 Tiger.

How to install tiger on external firewire drive

I'd like to upgrade my dual 2GHz Power PC G5 to 10.5, but I need access to OS9 from time to time. To solve this I wanted to install 10.4 with OS9 on my external HDD. I partitioned my Western Digital drive (connected by FW800) and installed 10.4 from the install disk. However, when I select it as the startup disk, the startup fails to identify the disk and starts from the internal drive.
I tried to follow instructions from an old post, but one thing that was different was that when partitioning my harddrive, I did not have the option for GUID, I just had the option for Apple Partion Map. Oddly, now that I installed OSX 10.4, the option for GUID appears, but still seams incorrect since I'm on a G5 CPU.
Any ideas why I can't boot from the external drive? Any suggestions on how to install OS9 and migrate my user folders over when I get it working?

Many Western Digital firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. From this WD support page:

You can't. You cannot install any version of OS X which was out prior to the release of your machine. The first release of the unibody MacBook will only run Leopard.

How re-install Tiger 10.4

I have a MacBook Pro, purchased about a year ago; I was wondering how to go about re-installing the operating system so that I can have a fresh computer? Is it feasible? Would you recommend against this?

Having your essential files, whatever they may be, isn't a substitute for having a bootable backup/clone of your existing boot volume. The backup ensures that you can easily restore the machine to its current state in case something goes wrong while your changing it. AFAIK, the restoration process is a simple matter. Once you've committed to that operation, I first erase, reformat, and repartition the original disk to suit my needs. IIRC, the restore disk contains Disk Utility, so doing that is a simple matter. Restoring is a simple matter of selecting the volume and going ahead.

Installing Tiger on a Macbook Pro that came only with Leopard

Any ideas on how to install Tiger onto a Macbook Pro that came preloaded with Leopard, and only has a Leopard disc?
I've got a refurbished Macbook Pro recently. Realised that one of my application doesn't work, Capture One Pro. Visited Phase One's website and they said it only supports 3.9 and above at the time it was released, which makes it 10.4.10.
Systems in the story below: Macbook Pro Core Cuo. Macbook Pro C2D (new set), Mac Pro, iMac Core 2 Duo
Here's what I've tried
1. I've an original disk that came with my MBP CD. When I try to boot from that disk on my MBP C2D, it gives me the crash screen -> "please hold the power for secs to restart".
2. I've tried installing Tiger onto my iMac and did a harddisk clone via Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to my MBP CD. Tiger was able to run on my MBP CD fine.
3. Then I tried using CCC to clone it over to my MBP C2D. It doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
4. I've tried installing Tiger on my Mac Pro. Used CCC to clone over the disk image to MBP C2D. Doesn't work too. Crash screen.
5. Created disk images of Tiger with Disk Utility on iMac, Mac Pro. Tried to restore using the iMac, Mac Pro disk images of Tiger. Doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
6. Updated Tiger to 10.4.11 on my Mac Pro. Created disk image using Disk Utility. Restored MBP C2D with it. Crash screen on load.
I'm out of ideas and Apple Support won't open until Monday.
It seems that this MBP C2D is set on not installing Tiger, no matter what. Wonder if getting hold of a Tiger retail disc will do the trick?

I have got tiger installed onto this MacBookPro which is the latest 4,1 model, but you require the latest Tiger disk (which the Apple Genius had in my case), but the volume, brightness and trackpad gestures do not work! Everything else is fine.
