How to Install to Factory Settings?

I just erased my hard drive (took nearly 12 hours with the seven passes) and now I need to install the OS. I am in Disk Utility but I do not understand how to install it.
21.5" iMac purchased 12/2012
OS X - 10.8.5
Proc. 2.96GHz, Intel Core i5
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

You should be in OS X Recovery, so close Disk Utility. Then, you should see a window with four options, so choose Reinstall OS X, press Continue and follow the steps. OS X will be installed on the hard disk

  • Install to factory settings?

So I want to instal my macbook back to factory settings. However, when I put in the instal disk there is no harddrive present. All that shows up under disk utility is max os x instal disk 1 and some 5.1GB thing. I did the whole take out battery thing and hold power button for 5 seconds. However, I have no idea what to do now. I hit the startup and it never gave me a destination to instal os x. (even before the erase there was no destination listed ever) How do I fix this and get my computer working for school again? The only thing that was ever on this laptop was papers that I had written for school. All help would be wonderful. I have the startup disks and everything else. I just don't know what to do.

If no hard drive is present in Disk Utility then that probably means your hard drive is dead and needs to be replaced.
Note that you must be using the Tiger Installer Disc One that came with your computer.
If there were a hard drive then in the DU left side list you should see an entry that looked sort of like this:
    186.3 GB Hitachi HTS7220...
Of course the main entry will differ if you have a different hard drive size and model. If you don't see an entry such as the above then your drive is non-functioning. If you do see an entry such as this then do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    2. Select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How can i reset factory settings on imac running osx 10.5.8 without setup discs?

Hi, I just got my hands on my first Mac which is second hand and I want to wipe the hard drive clean and start a fresh.
The system I have is a iMac with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running Mac OS X version 10.5.8.
How can I reset this Mac to factory settings as I didn't get the setup discs with the computer?

Phone Apple and order replacements, or if you don't need iLife, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

  • Re-installing after factory settings?

So I've had my laptop for over a year and I had Adobe Premiere Elements (11?), however earlier this year I had to restore the computer to factory settings after a major system error. This completely wiped any trace that I ever had any Adobe product. Unfortunately I don't have a product key as by my recollection, it was pre-installed when I bought the laptop. I checked my e-mails to see if I actually had signed up for Adobe, but I hadn't. However when I went to where I bought the laptop, they said that I must have registered to Adobe in order to have had the software.
Basically what I'm asking is if some laptop models are sold with pre-installed Adobe software, and if so, can it be re-installed without a product key?

    elliottn
What computer operating system is involved in your question?
You do not appear to know which program you had, besides not having a serial number.
And, since Premiere Elements came pre-installed on your computer, it will not be found in "My Orders" since you did not purchase Premiere Elements from Adobe. But, if your product got registered somehow in its pre-installed state, you may gain information by going to "My Products" at the Adobe web site.
Both those concerns may be addressed by going to Adobe http://www.adobe.com, signing in with your Adobe ID and Password, typing "My Products" in the Search field, and following the link to "My Products" to find what is listed there. If you find your product's name, click on it. Your serial number should be revealed.
It is easy enough to direct you to installation files that you can use, but all is not possible without a purchased serial number for the specific product.
Please update us on your progress.
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Does anyone know how to reset to factory settings?

I bought my mac used and was told by the seller to take my mac to apple to have them restore it. I bought snow leopard but my mac will not install it. I am thinking that if I go back to factory settings everything will work again on here. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    Then, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X disc and hold the C key while your computer is starting.
    2. Select the language, go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, choose your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall Mac OS X.
After doing that, open  > Software Update, and install the most recent version. Finally, you should be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard, only if you are using 10.4 or 10.5. To check the Mac OS X version, open  > About this Mac

  • How to recover to factory settings

    Hi All,
I've been having some problems whilst trying to recover my HP Pavilion Dv6 to Factory Settings. I'm running a 64-bit Operating system, and have 4 GB installed RAM and AMD Turion Dual Core M520 Processor.
Simply put, I'd like to make a fresh start on my HP Dv6 and would like to revert to factory settings- i've manually backed up some files by inserting a CD and dragging the files across (burning them.) but was unable to carry out the official backup, as it kept stopping at 31% and saying it couldn't complete the Backup successfully.
Anyway, my problem is that I've checked various online forums and still haven't found a solution to my problem. Firstly, I didn't have the PC recovery manager and had to get that installed. However, it had various .dll files missing- whenever i found them on the internet and installed them, it would find a new error. Finally, the last error I received was this- 'The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application.'
Now, before anyone suggests any other methods like trying F11, i have and it just booted normally (I saw this problem on many other forums.) I've also tried to create a system image, that failed spectacularly- all it did was restart the computer. Like i said, I don't actually have a backup that windows recognises, just some files that I dragged across to burn to a disk (It was treated like a USB Stick).
That's my issue. I'd greatly appreciate a fast reply, but if it's not possible then it isn't possible I guess
Thanks a lot to anyone who  takes the time to reply  ^o^

    Hi:
When your recovery can't be done, then you have two choices as I see it.
    1. order a set of recovery disks for your notebook from HP by following the info at the link below.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07143&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lan...
    2. Use this workaround (or use it until you get your recovery disks). Using this workaround will not include the programs that came with your PC.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

It will work definitly. But turn off the phone first and make sure you push all three buttons tight and turn on the phone. You have to keep them pressed until handshaking logo or pin enter is appear. I have use it so many time since my beloved 6600.
