How to install Ubuntu

Can someone here please help me and tell me how to install ubuntu 12.04 to my new u400.
I have tried using a USB and a disk but all that happens when I restart the computer is that it opens a purple coloured screen and does nothing else.
I am not too computer literate so simple help would be appreciated please
Rev. Mark

Hi Greydog_01, welcome to the forum,
On which port are you connecting the USB drive to your U400; on a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port? If you are attaching it to an USB 3.0 port please try again using an USB 2.0 port and let us know what happens.
I'm definitely not a Linux expert, so if my idea doesn't help please wait for someone else to jump in.

  • Tutorial: how to install ubuntu on new alu macs.

Okay, to install the most popular distro. of linux, ubuntu, you must first go to the site and download a live CD (this is the type of installer i will be using on this tutorial). Now after the download is done, go to disk utilities and burn the img to a CD-R. Put the CD somewhere safe for now. Now go to the bootcamp assistant app and make a partition, at least 20 gigs should do. now after that is done, dont click install windows now, click on install later. Okay, now for installing...
    1. put the cd in the computer.
    2. restart and hold down the option key at startup (before apple logo)
    3. select windows (it says windows because that is the only approved OS to run with macOS)
    4. select language and then select install ubuntu.
    5. follow the simple instructions until it gets to the part where you need to partition your drive.
    6. select manually partition (the last option)
    7. delete the 20Gig FAT32 partition (should be near bottom)
    8. now with the free space, create a 3000mb swap area partition.
    9. after that, make a 1000mb ext3 (the first option) and then under mount options, make it a /home partition.
    10. for the final step, make the rest of the free space a ext3 but under the mount options, this time just select the "/". now your done, click install and fill out your personal info and you should be good.
    11. have it restart and when it's shutting down, it should spit out the disk.
    12. once it is restarting, hold down the option key again and insert the disk once the macOS HD icon comes up. the disk should appear next to it and be labeled windows.
    13. select the cd and when the menu for the cd comes up again, go to the last option where it says "boot up from first drive" or something like that (sorry, im typing this off of memory).
    14. you will need to update everything, but besides that, you should be golden. as far as i know, you have to insert the cd every time, i dont know how to get it to work with out the cd, sorry. (please inform me if someone knows how)
    hope this helped!

  • How to install Ubuntu Server on Xserve 1.1?

I've tried to launch Boot Camp assistant, but it says that I have to update boot ROM firmware, so I've installed all avilable updates, but that error message still comes up. I've checked that I have the latest update for my firmware, so I have no idea what the problem is!
If you know how I can fix this issue or if there is any other ways to install ubuntu without using Boot Camp, please HELP ME. I realy need your help.
Thanks in advance for any reply!

Xserve EFI firmware doesn't have a CSM that other Mac models have. A CSM presents a BIOS to OS's that require it. So you need to figure out how to do an EFI only installation of Ubuntu. A big gotcha is that I'm betting this Xserve has 32-bit EFI, and most linux distributions only support 64-bit architectures including the EFI. There is a way to compile an EFI supporting bootloader in 32-bit, and then have the rest of the OS in either 32-bit or 64-bit architectures. But it's unusual to find 32-bit EFI bootloaders precompiled.
I'd also suggest newer kernels as they should have better support, but this is rare hardware so decent chance of bugs that no one has encountered. I'd definitely look through dmesg once you get it booting, and make sure there are no major errors (warnings are usually benign).

  • How to install Ubuntu alongside Arch Linux?

I already have Arch installed and I have downloaded the Ubuntu 13.04 ISO. My grub file is auto generated following the beginners installation guide since I don't have much knowledge about GRUB2 commands or configuration. I looked up https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … _arguments - The Ubuntu ISO section, but didn't understand it. It instructs to to create a /archives but I don't know whether I have to create a new partition or do it in the one where Arch is. Also do I have to install Ubuntu before doing this. But wouldn't that overwrite my existing "grub.cfg"?
Can I do something like deleting the existing grub.cfg, installing Ubuntu on a separate partition and then add Arch to the Ubuntu grub menu. If this can be done, please tell me exactly what to delete in "/boot". I'm thinking the wiki's method is much more difficult and would prefer to add menu entries to Ubuntu's grub rather than the existing one. I have seen many people doing this on Google, but they all install Arch after Ubuntu rather than the other way round.
    Running lsblk -lf

#sda4 is an extended partition which has sda5, on which Arch is installed. sda2 and sda3 are the #Windows partitions I want to delete and merge into a single one to make space for Ubuntu. sda1 is #/boot (maybe, that's what it shows in Gparted. Doesn't it have to be boot since it is the only one left?
Please help with detailed instructions since I am a complete novice at these sort of things (boot and all). Contrary to the norm, I installed Arch first, and am curious about Ubuntu so I want to try it out. Post any other information you'd like to have, and maybe I'll post a gparted screenshot if needed.
P.S- Not sure whether I'm allowed to post about installing some other distro, so I posted in this section. Please notify me via email if I'll have to remove it, and I'll do so.

I am not sure to what senjin refers, as I have never had a problem with ubuntu controlling grub, with one exception:
Sometimes ubuntu's OS-prober can't find Arch (so it disappears from the automatically created menu).  Maybe this is the problem senjin found.
One way around this is to have a file in your Arch /etc that OS-prober looks for when it searches for other operating systems.  Look for a file in your ubuntu called /etc/lsb-release.  Make an appropriate copy in your Arch install, and OS-prober will always find it.
Another way to ensure OS-prober always finds Arch is to mount the Arch / partition before [re]running update-grub.
Finally, since you don't really need to ever generate a new menu entry for Arch - since it will always be the same - you can simply run update-grub once, copy the menu entries generated into /etc/grub.d/40-custom, and then disable the OS-prober (so it will only ever update the ubuntu entries (what I do these days).
grub, run from other distros, losing "Arch" seems to be a fairly common problem that is easily solved by any of the above.

  • How to install ubuntu netbook version 10.10 on lenovo s10-3

I hate the win 7 and want to install linux ubuntu remix netbook edition v 10.10 on it.. How do i go abt it?
i have 4 drives(50,60.60.60GB resp total 250GB ).. and have win 7 installed on c drie(50GB).. noob here so do lemme know if there is a step by step process or if i need to take care of anything before that...
    thanks in advance

The recovery software works with a hidden partiiton and a particular disk schema (X GB for Windows,s and Z GB for User data). Basically, it will restore your partitions contents.
If you change that schema, maybe you will have problems (at least, if you modify the hidden partition). So, that's why I asked you if you have OneKey Recovery installed.
You can get a Windows 7 Home Basic DVD and use your serial number.  In that case, you can do anything with your laptop.
Another option is t otake out that disk, connect it on a desktop PC and makea disk image.

  • How do I install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite L670D-102

    Hello
I have been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 (tried both AMD64 and i386 versions of Desktop Edition) onto a Satellite L670D-102 using a Live CD. The CD spins for a while, there is some activity on the hard drive and then I get a flashing white cursor (a hyphen) on a black screen. I left it all night and it remained the same. I tried with a 'live' usb and again, no boot. The cds and usb work in other machines running both amd and intel cpus.
The sort of questions that spring to mind are:-
Is there some security or other setting within the cmos that prevents anything other than Windows being loaded?
Are Toshiba simply anti- Linux and I need a new machine?
Do I need a special bios to run Ubuntu?
Any help in resolving the issue would be welcome.

    Hi
I use a Toshiba Satellite L655. It came with a Win7. The first thing I did after buying it was to wipe out Win7 and install ubuntu 10.10 on the entire hard disk (not a dual boot or Wubi install). Now I want to try out ubuntu 11.04 beta from a live usb and I am trying to change the boot order. The laptop doesn't boot from the usb drive. I am unable to enter the BIOS. I have tried pressing ESC, F2 etc while switching on the laptop. So far, I have not been able to access the BIOS setup.
I have tried googling and I read about Toshiba's "legacy-free" laptops. But am not sure if mine is such a one. Now, I don't have Win at all in my laptop. I have only ubuntu 10.10. I need to access the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that my laptop boots from the USB drive. How do I do this?
    Any guidance would be welcome.

  • How do I install Ubuntu on Mac?

I was wondering about Ubuntu and learning more about it.
I used Boot Camp once to install Windows 7 Ultimate, but I wasn't satisfied with Windows 7, so I removed it. I thought Windows 7 was really boring and I missed many of the games included with XP that were excluded.
So how do you install Ubuntu on a Mac?
I've heard of using virtual software to install Ubuntu, but is it possible to install Ubuntu via Boot Camp?
    Here's my system info:
    15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Mid-2009)
Mac OS X v10.6.7 Snow Leopard
Let me know what I need to get started

    Hi,
the Ubuntu community has a very good place to start here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
Nonetheless I would propose to start with the free VirtualBox as install/use Ubuntu in a Virtual Machine.
If you don't like it it is easier to remove...

  • How to install the new BIOS for Satellite Pro M50 running Ubuntu

I am running Ubuntu on my Pro M50. Could someone advise me what the latest BIOS is and how to install it?
The BIOS upgrade site here seems to havean exe file but I couldn't see the BIOS file within?
    Thanks

Why do you want to update the BIOS?!
Do you have any big troubles with your notebook?!
The Toshiba European driver page provides BIOS for XP and BIOS for Vista.
Both BIOS versions must be executed while the operating system is running!
If you use the Linux on your notebook, you will be not able to update the BIOS!!!
    Do you understand?
Once again; The BIOS update should be done ONLY if its absolutely necessary. In other case dont update it!

  • How to Install Oracle developer suite in Ubuntu

I'm using Ubuntu hardy 8.04, and I have to use oracle developer suite to create some report. Does anybody know how to install the thing in Ubuntu. The documentation mention that I have to use Red Hat Enterprise, which I don't have.

No Oracle support for Ubuntu is disappointing.
Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) desktop is more robust than Redhat.
I prefer using Ubuntu to Windows and will move everything to Ubuntu when I can get my applications installed/supported. I already have SQLDevelper running under Ubuntu and it works just fine.
