How to install updates without restart

I have my macbook pro 13 to perform some calculation every moment. It should take long time and can not be interrupted. However, when every update comes, I need to restart. It's quit bothering. Does anybody know how to stop the restart and finish the installation of updates in the next power down and up just like an usual Unix OS?

open software update:

after software update loads:
Software Update > Preferences... > Scheduled Check
Uncheck the "Check for updates:" box

How to install Xp without the DVD? Is there anyway to get the drivers that are to be installed from the dvd after installing Xp?
I really need to use Autocad and Rhino on my Macpro, so Parallels or VMware fusion is not an option. I am already using VMware fusion on my Macbook pro, but VMware will not use 4g RAM of my Macpro which means it would be hard to run Rhino.
By the way, I am planning to buy Windows (I am sooooo ashamed to install that self-messed up OS on my Macpro. but so what,,, Autocad and Rhino do not run on Mac, and I need specifically the two programs). XP with sp2, sp3, or vista. which one is the best option?
Since my Macpro has only One 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon, there is no need to buy XP professional? (XP home doesn't support multi-processors, and XP Pro does, I guess?)

VMware Fusion uses only 512 RAM maximum, doesn't it? But you said it will use my entire 4GB RAM but only 2 cores. That's something different from what I've known.
If fusion really uses 4gm RAM of my mac pro, I don't really have to use Boot Camp. But most people who need to run heavy programs in Windows choose Boot Camp because it's the only way to use a Mac just like a PC, meaning that the XP uses the entire RAM memory.
XP will only use 2 GB of RAM, no matter how much the system has.
I just found out that Rhino doesn't really work on Vista. So vista is ruled out.
Only Vista 64-bit recognizes all system RAM.

  • How to install Windows without USB or DVD drive on 2009 MacBook

    Problem
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2009 fitted with both an HDD and SSD.
Obviously I had to remove the DVD SuperDrive to fit in the HDD into the Optical Bay.
This is awesome big and quick storage, but you can't use it for BootCamp anymore, BootCamp Assistant says. Because it needs the optical drive for installing Windows and it won't accept it via USB.
The good thing is, that you don't need the Bootcamp Assistant for installing Windows.
    So:
I have Mac Os:X Mavericks working from my SSD (which I fitted to the HDD bay for increased speed)
The HDD is installed in the former optical drive bay, with one MacOS Ext partition for Mac storage and the other one being NTFS with Windows.
    Solution
The solution is a little bit tricky, needs either a virtual Windows machine or a real one and it involves removing and refitting your hard drive, but on an older MacBook Pro like 2009s that originally came with an Optical Drive there is no other way. afaik.
    Step 0.5
    Backup your Data
    Step 1
    Partitioning your desired drive
You can do this using Apples Disk Utility if you have installed either Tuxera NTFS or NTFS 3G. Or you do that in step 3 in Windows.
I'd recommend a size of at least 30 GB, Windows 7 alone takes up around 20 GB
    Step 2
Remove the hard drive and connect it to a windows machine
Afaik the next step has to happen in Windows with full hardware access. If you want to use a virtual machine i.e. VM Ware or Parallels you need to connect it via USB as an external device, otherwise it won't have full access to the partitions. Obviously you can use a real Windows computer too. Still you're gonna need to remove the drive from your Mac.
    Step 3
Re-format and set "active" partition state
Format desired partition with NTFS, quick format works fine. (just in case)
Open your Windows 7 Image (or Disk) and Copy the directories "Boot" and "Sources" as well as "Bootmgr" onto the partition
    Make the Partition bootable:
Using Windows XP, Vista, or 7, open CMD as Admin (Windows key + R, type CMD, hit Enter)
Enter the following commands, (replace X with what applies to your hard drive):
    diskpart
    list disk
    select disk X
    list partition
    select partition X
    active
    exit
    X:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 X:
    Exit and shut down
(Source and additional images: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/)
(If this is somehow possible using Mac Tools, please let us know!)
    Step 4
Fit the HDD back into your mac
    Just that.
    Step 5
    Install windows
Start your Mac and immediately press and hold the alt (option) key until you can select the other drive to boot windows.
Install using advanced installation to select the same partition.
    Step 6
    Clean up
After the installation press cmd + r (in windows) and type and run msconfig
    Click to the Boot tab.
Click 'Windows Setup (\windows)', and hit Delete.
    Click OK.
    Click 'Exit without restart'.
And lastly, delete the ‘Sources’ folder from your hard drive root (this will free up 2-3gb).
    Final Step:
Install the Mac drivers (Get the right version here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634 )
Recommendation: Use Winclone Pro to backup your precious installation.
On a footnote: This article was a big help to me: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/)

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? http://gigaom.com/2011/07/26/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
Which Windows version are you trying to install? If I remember right, you can't use windows 8 on these older machines.
Other than that it's hard to say what could have gone wrong. I can only suggest going through the steps again carefully and making sure everything worked the way it should.
Have a look at this article too for a slighly more verbose instruction on making a drive bootable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/

  • How do I update without payment information?

How can I update software in a new MacBook Air without surrendering payment information?
Tim Cook's open letter recently assured us of respect of privacy and yet we remain unable to update a new MacBook except we surrender payment information - which information neither necessary nor required for the updates. This is blatantly wrong and often impractical as I need not be a client of VISA, MasterCard or Amex to use a fully updated MacBook.
How else can I update the MacBook (Pages, Numbers & KeyNote)?

Rather than providing a credit card, choose the None option.

  • How to install Quicktime WITHOUT iTunes?

It seems that there isn't a Quicktime installation kit, just an "iTunes with Quicktime" kit. That can't be right. I don't want to install Apple bloatware that I'm never going to use and would just uninstall right away just to get a simple video player.
Seriously, iTunes includes DRM (Digital Restrictions Software) of the sort that you often can never get off of your system without crippling it in some way.
All I want to do is watch movie previews. I shouldn't have to install 35 MB of software (compressed) just to watch movie previews.
So please, tell me how to install just Quicktime, or tell me about a Quicktime 7 compatible media player I can use as an alternative.
    Tony
P.S. Why are so many movie previews available only in Quicktime format? Does Apple pay the studios to get a monopoly in this area or what? You can usually can get around this by going to Canadian sites, for example the US site for Imagine Me and You has only a Quicktime format preview, but you can go to a Canadian site, http://www.icinema.ca/movie.php?movieID=51628, and they have the preview in Windows Media and Real formats ONLY (Quicktime isn’t even available). But that's an inconvenience. Why can’t we get to choose our media format in the US?
    Alienware something-or-other   Windows XP

Thanks for the link. That's exactly what I was looking for.
I went back to the "Quicktime Download" tab and I still can't see a link to the /standalone page. It must be hidden somewhere, but Real does the same sort of bait-and-switch thing, except they are trying to trick you into paying for their product, which is even worse.
Also I apologize for the attitude. Just kind of frustrated, having spent too much time trying to solve this very minor problem.

  • How to install update of packaged application "online discussion forum"

    Hi,
    With compliments to the apex-team (!) :
The update for the online disuccion forum is available since two days.
I´m using the first version, and I´m wondering how to install this update. If I follow the installation-instructions, I will loose all my data (?).
How have I to migrate to this new release ?
Thanks in advance for any reaction.
    Leo

I think I've found a couple small bugs in the Discussion Forum application.
You can't post a new message or a reply from the preview pages (26 and 28).
The value 'test' is hardcoded in the insert statement in the position of a numeric column.
Is this application going to be moved back to SourceForge? It looks easy to fix.

  • How to install thunderbird without Eudora migrations

I have used Eudora since the mid 90s and now wish to switch to Thunderbird. I downloaded TB and installed it, including the option for importing mailboxes (and settings?) from Eudora 7. I'm using Windows 7. It worked perfectly, although it took quite a while to import the Eudora stuff. I then decided the Eudora stuff "cluttered" everything, when learning how to use TB, so I decided to uninstall TB, and reinstall it WITHOUT the Eudora migration option. This time, although the TB install again worked fine... all the Eudora imports arrived on TB again, even though I was given no chance/window to ask for or decline them this time. Please, how can I install TB without the Eudora imports, preferably WITHOUT uninstalling Eudora, as I at least want to keep it to refer to my many 100s of messages there.
Then, one day, I may choose to eventually import the Eudora stuff, but not until I become competent in TB. By the way, TB still imports Eudora stuff when installed, without asking, even when Eudora is "hidden" by PC-Magic Hidden Folders. Any help is much appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Charles

Thunderbird maintains a profile folder in the appdata folder on windows. You can uninstall reinstall and do just about anything you like, but the profile is unaffected by install and uninstall.
    Close Thunderbird.
Type at the start menu search box %appdata% and press enter
the thunderbird folder shown in windows explorer will contain the profile and setting file that points to the location of the profile. Delete that folder and your good to go.
Start Thunderbird and it will be like a fresh install.

  • How to install itunes without cd/dvd rom support?

    Hi,
Everybody knows when you install iTunes to any windows device, you will have a problem with your dvdrw afterwards. Till day, every installation i made end up with losing my dvd-rom.
There is 3 solution to this problem, but those solutions never worked for me and last time i used my company notebook without it's dvdrom for over a year.
Now, i reinstall my notebook with Windows 8.1 Update 1 and i want to install iTunes for my music but i can' let iTunes do the same thing again.
Is there anyway install iTunes without cd-dvd 3rd party/usb/firmware driver support?
I search on net and i found this link but it's way too old
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA44491?viewlocale=en_US

QuickTime is required for iTunes to run. You can think of iTunes as a media manager "front end" to QuickTime which handles the actual playing of the media.
Safari was an optional install when I installed iTunes on my Windows system. I wasn't forced to install Safari. MobileMe is also no longer automatically installed, though it will update if it finds an existing installation. I didn't get it forced on me when I installed on my Vista system.

  • How to install Aperture without original dvd

I lost my Aperture 2 installation and Aperture 3 upgrade disks. How to install Aperture in my new Macbook ?

Do you still have the Aperture 2 and Aperture 3 registration codes? Then you can download the Trial installer and use that to install Aperture on your new Macbook.
You can download the Aperture 3 trial installer to reinstall Aperture from this webpage - there is a link to the trial and instructions on how to reinstall - don't let the title of this page distract you :
