    Thank you. I think this partly solved my problem.
    I was trying to install "xmgrace", a software for plotting with GUI interface. It is installed. But when I try to launch this software from xterm, the GUI does not appear. I guess things are different for os x and for a generic linux, and I did not configure the installation correctly.

  • How to install Classic on 800MHz SD eMac w/10.4 w/o wiping entire drive??

    I've been trying to help out a friend who bought an 800MHz eMac (SuperDrive) used on Craigslist. Machine is in great condition and came with Tiger installed and working fine. She has since installed many of her own OS X apps, but finds she needs to run a few legacy apps and needs Classic installed.
    She has a 4-CD set of eMac Software Restore discs, which contain OS 10.1.4 plus OS 9.2.2. These are not standalone installers, however. After mounting Disc 1, she is able to reboot from that CD (into an OS 9 interface), but is only presented with a single option, and that is to erase the hard disk and do a complete restore of the original OSes and apps that shipped with the computer. Since she has spent weeks installing apps and configuring the computer just as she wants it, she does not want to have to wipe the entire drive just to be able to add Classic at this point.
    I can think of two alternatives, neither of which will work for her because she does not have access to an external firewire drive, either with or without a bootable system on it. My two methods would be to either:
    A. Boot from an external FW drive in target disk mode and then use a standalone OS 9 installer (which she does have) to get Classic on the eMac;
    B. Clone the entire hard drive to an external drive and then run the 4 eMac Software Restore discs, update to the latest version of Tiger, and then add back all her additional installed apps and utilities, etc.
    1) Am I correct in assuming that method A would, in fact, work?
    More importantly, though, can anyone suggest a simpler way to install OS 9 on this machine which would not involve using an external drive? It's so frustrating that the Software Restore disc is bootable (whereas the standalone OS 9 installer disc is not!)...yet there is no apparent way to access just the OS 9 installer on these Restore discs and to run just that installer and not have to reformat the entire drive.
    2) Any bright ideas on a relatively simple workaround would be greatly appreciated!
    Additionally, it is unknown whether or not OS 9 drivers have been installed on this eMac. I assume, though, that if they had not been installed, then an OS 9 installation would balk and not go through. It would be worth taking that chance, though, as the worst that could happen is that OS 9 would not install. Then there would be no other option but to do a full erase and install from the Restore Discs.
    3) Is there any way of ascertaining in advance whether or not OS 9 drivers have been installed?
    Thanks in advance for any help!
    PowerMac G4/867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Your initial post notes that OS X 10.4 is installed but 10.1.4 is on the actual restore discs that you have. My recollection is that Apple switched from 10.1.4 to 10.2 late in the production run of the 700 MHz model eMac (specificaly, they upgraded two weeks after I bought my 700 MHz eMac), so a 800 MHz model should have shipped with OS X 10.2, not 10.1.4. There are significant differences in the Restore disc sets between the different OS X versions. In any case it's clear that the discs you have do not include a retail Tiger install disc. You'll eventually want to pick up the retail black-lable Tiger 10.4 Install DVD in case it's ever necessary to reinstall the OS (if the eMac is one that doesn't have a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive, the Tiger DVD can still be exchanged for a set of CDs for a nominal fee).
    From your later posts, it appears that you do have a separate OS 9 install CD but that the emac won't boot from that OS 9 disc. It rather sounds as if the disc set you have is actually from an earlier 700 MHz eMac model. Open System Profiler and check the video hardware; if it shows ATI graphics rather than nVidia graphics, you definitely have the wrong set of discs. While there's no online link for this, you can call the Apple Store and ask about purchasing a replacement set of discs for the Mac model you actually have (have the info from eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model handy if you call).
    The OS 9 installation method you need depends on the set of restore disks and the original OS X version that was provided with those discs. Since you have 10.4 installed on a 800 MHz eMac, you'd nominally start with Mac OS X 10.4: Restoring applications from a Mac OS X 10.2 Software Restore disc rather than the older Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.3. Unfortunately, reinstalling Classic following that guide does invovlve erasing the HD, which you want to avoid.
    Given the discs you do have is for 10.1.4, you can check the later part of Using Apple Software Restore to install or reinstall parts without erasing (Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier) for the steps on how to install parts without erasing. However, if I'm picturing the correct set of Restore discs that you have in hand (there have been enogh different sets of resstore and install discs to make that a royally confusing morass), OS 9 is not on the Restore disc set in versions prior to OS X 10.2; rather, there should be a separate OS 9 Install CD in the set of discs that came with OS X 10.1.4 Macs.
    Under the circumstances, unless you acquire the correct Restore discs for that model eMac, your best chance of getting Classic installed would on first thought be to take up Chopsuey's suggestion about dragging the OS 9 System Folder from the OS 9 Install CD onto the eMac's HD, then try to use that to get a hobbled form of Classic open well enough to use Tome Viewer to extract the full OS 9 System onto the HD. Although the OS 9 CD you have from a OS X 10.1.4 disc set would be for an nVidia graphics eMac and your appears to be an ATI model, the actual graphics hardware is driven by OS X, so having the wrong graphics drivers in OS 9 may or may not actually limit Classsic to running in a 640x480 pixel window.
    I'm pretty sure you'd find it easier to call the Apple Store for the correct set of Restore discs for that model.
    Installing the OS 9 drivers on the hard drive is required to boot the nVidia graphic model eMacs into OS 9 from the HD but is not required to use the OS 9 System Folder to run Classic. Later ATI graphics eMacs won't boot into OS 9 regardless of whether or not the drivers are installed on the hard drive. Either way, if you only want to run Classic, you don't need to reformat the drive to install the OS 9 drivers (nor search for the Terminal hack to put OS 9 drivers onto an already-formatted HD).

  • How to install Oracle 9i on redhat 9

    i have installed 4-5 times oracle 9i on linux ...but the thing is ..as soon i restart my pc..the SQLPLUS doest not start from the redhat 9 terminal
    ...So plz tell me the step by step procedure how to install Oracle 9i on linux ...
    .... What & where is .bash_profile file is located ...???
    How to create system shareable memory ...??? without this SQLPLUS is not starting ...
    how to modify the kernel variables ..???
    ..

    What & where is .bash_profile file is located ...???The file exists under oracle home directory.
    # ls -l /home/oracle/.bash_profile
    -rw-r--r-- 1 oracle dba 328 11? 2 15:35 /home/oracle/.bash_profile
    How to create system shareable memory ? without this SQLPLUS is not starting.Append your shareable memory parameters to /etc/sysctl.conf, You might want to change these values if you have more RAM:
    kernel.shmmax = 536870912
    kernel.shmmni = 4096
    kernel.shmall = 2097152
    REBOOT the system so the kernel changes can take effect, or if rebooting is not an option, you can change the kernel params at runtime by issuing:
    # echo 536870912 > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
    # echo 4096 > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmni
    # echo 2097152 > /proc/sys/kernel/shmall
    how to modify the kernel variables ..???method 1:
    To modify kernel parameters a common way is to change /proc file system:
    1. Log in as root user.
    2. Change to the /proc/sys/kernel directory.
    3. echo <desired list of values> > <group of parameters>
    But this update is not permanent and after system reboot, your kernel parameters's
    values will be the same as before.
    method 2:
    setuping permanently kernel parameter values ,is to use '/etc/sysctl.conf' file.
    Every time the system boots, the '/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit' script is executed
    by init process. This shell script contains a call to sysctl command and
    reads the values from /etc/sysctl.conf file as the ones to be set Therefore, any values added to /etc/sysctl.conf will take effect after the system boot or without downtime using "sysctl -p" command

  • [SOLVED] How to install and run (on debian) a separate, downlevel version of firefox for the F5/firepass VPN?

    (Note: my problem is similar to [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/931534?e=es&as=aaq another current problem] except that
    * OP is running windows (I'm running a debian linux)
    * OP is asking a more general question (how to fix?) while I'm asking for details on a proposed fix)
    I'm currently running
    $ lsb_release -ds
    Linux Mint Debian Edition
    $ cat /etc/debian_version
    wheezy/sid
    $ uname -rv
    3.2.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Mar 4 22:48:17 UTC 2012
    $ iceweasel --version
    Mozilla Iceweasel 13.0.1
    I'd like to continue running an uplevel iceweasel ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation_software_rebranded_by_the_Debian_project which is firefox]) but apparently need to run a downlevel version in order to run a particular vendor-supplied plugin. How best to do that (i.e., with minimal performance degradation, and without affecting my package management)? Or is there another way to solve the general problem (running the F5 Network Access Plugin)? Why I ask:
    My employer is giving me remote access via a SecurID token and the F5 Network Access Plugin (F5NAP). The latter is in fact a browser plugin, which seems to me an odd way to implement a VPN, but it's the only offered option. Unfortunately,
    * the only browsers supported for linux are Firefox 3 and Firefox 8 (per [http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_apm/manuals/product/apm_compatibility_matrix_10_2_1.html this]--scroll to "Linux Operating Systems")
    * my primary laptop runs LMDE (see above) with Iceweasel 13 (from the mozilla.debian.net repository), which I want to keep. (It's the uplevel browser, dammit !-)
    So I first tried to install the F5NAP on my iceweasel, hoping it was sufficiently like the listed versions. I browsed to my employer's site, logged in using the token, and followed the link to install the plugin. Unfortunately, that failed: the xpi began running, but then quit with the message
    > F5 Network Access Plugin could not be installed because it is not compatible with Iceweasel 13.0.1
    Hoping for a simple workaround, I told the often-useful User Agent Switcher plugin to emulate Firefox 8, but no fix. Hence it seems like I will hafta
    * install Firefox 3 or Firefox 8
    * run that downlevel browser whenever I want remote access
    * run the uplevel browser for everything else
    This definitely seems like a kludge, so I am open to alternatives. Meanwhile I'm wondering:
    # Which of the F5-supported downlevel browsers (Firefox 3 or Firefox 8) has the smaller memory footprint?
    # How to install the downlevel browser so that it does not interfere with my uplevel browser's configuration, operation, and updating via debian package management?
    # How to run the downlevel browser so that its operation does not interfere with my uplevel browser? I know firefox typically wants to run singleton.

    @[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/160087 verdi]: thanks for your helpful suggestions. The "fix" (actually a kludge, but I gotta work with what F5 and my employer give me) was:
    # Install/run latest Firefox 3 (despite there being [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/932269 no 64-bit version for linux]) using [https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzDAFHgIxRzKbmJDUGZqTzhfbDg this bash scriptlet].
    # Create a [https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzDAFHgIxRzKQjRyQndqUTJpRXM run script] to start firefox so that one can
    #* choose the appropriate profile (I was unable to set it from the script without startup error)
    #* run multiple instances (I don't want 3.x firefox touching my uplevel profile)
    # Run Firefox 3.x with the runner, then point it to my employer's site to install the [http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_apm/manuals/product/apm_compatibility_matrix_10_2_1.html F5 Network Access Plugin] (restarting firefox as required).
    The gnome-terminal tab from which I invoke the runner spews a bazillion "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" errors, but the plugin runs, and I can SSH normally (though more slowly) to servers on the VLAN from another terminal tab.

  • How to install Chinese in Oracle Application Express 4.0?

    You might want to go through the documentation here
    To execute the SQL script you could either use the SQL script's full path
    @C:\oraclexe\apex\apex\builder\load_zh-cn.sqlor
    open Command prompt , move to that directory first and then run sqlplus
    cd "C:\oraclexe\apex\apex\builder"
    sqlplus sys/password

To install a Windows program on a Mac you would first need to buy and install a copy of Windows (e.g. Windows 8). You would install Windows via Bootcamp Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support or via 3rd party software such as http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

  • Black screen on GDM, how to install xorg-base from grub?

    I followed these installation guides to install archlinux in a virtualbox before testing it out on a real machine:

    * https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide
    It was really all smooth sailing until I finished installing gnome and gnome-extra.  These seemed to go well, but then I ran into a problem a lot like this guy's:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=119657
    Namely, I now get past GRUB and am greated with a black screen that I seem to have no control over.  I can't boot, can't type, can't add my user to a video group, nothing.
    So, I have two questions:
    * What seems to be wrong?  From that thread, I think I need to install xorg-base, possibly?  Could it be that I installed the wrong video drivers for a virtual machine? (I assume it's the virtual machine I need drivers for, not my actual video card, right?)
    * In a situation like this, how should I properly use GRUB to boot into CLI where I can diagnose, fix stuff, and do things like install xorg-base?  I can't find any way to boot to command line.
    **Update**
    Here's a little more research I've done.
    1. I booted up using my installation disk to try accessing my files, maybe I can set something to not use GDM, as per here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/76543/ho … -selection
    2. But I didn't know how to access underlying files when on boot disk, so I did this:
    $ fdisk -l # told me sda2 was my Linux Filesystem
    $ sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
    3. From the beginner's guide section on GUI troubleshooting here, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide, I tried this (prepending my mount point):
    $ grep EE /mnt/var/log/Xorg.0.log
    4. Well, I can't copy the output because of no GUI, but there were 3 errors:
    (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
    Are any of these relevant to why I boot into a black screen rather than something that looks like GNOME?
    **Update 2**
    Something similar for:
    grep EE /mnt/var/log/gdm/:0.log.4
    (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
    ** Update 3 **
    Discovered I could TTY to another terminal.  In virtualbox this is Host + F2.
    Re-enabled gdm, restarted xstart, ran gnome, no luck.
    $ sudo pacman -S xorg
    told me I was out of disk space, uh oh!  Of course, I made it only 4 GB since this is a virtualbox demo.

  • Installing FCP using terminal

    friends: i want to try and install final cut pro HD 4.5 on my macbook air 11 inch running 10.7.2 (if possible). this same program is running great on my other macbook air 11 inch using a slightly earlier OS X (Lion?). 10.7.2 as you know does not support 10.7.2, but i have heard that sometimes it is just the installer that needs the powerpc so i am trying to install it via terminal. the problem is, i do not know how to configure my string properly. when i drop the .app into the terminal window i get this location:
    /Users/mycomputername/Desktop/Final\ Cut\ Pro\ HD.app
    and i was using variations of this:
    sudo installer -package /Users/mycomputername/Desktop/Final\ Cut\ Pro\ HD.app -target /
    try not to laugh, i am not a coder, just trying to get my computer to run this program that i love. the new FCP is too expensive and i don't even like it. if you can assist me in creating the proper string i would be grateful. i know that someone was able to install final cut studio using this method.
    thanks so much for your help!

    I do not use Final Cut Pro, but I play one on Television!
    Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
    In April 2004, version 4.5 of Final Cut Pro was introduced and branded by Apple as "Final Cut Pro HD" due to its native support for Panasonic's tape-based DVCPRO HDformat for compressed 720p and 1080i HD over FireWire. (The software had been capable of uncompressed HD editing since version 3.0, but at the time had required expensive video cards and high speed storage.)
    Any program written in 2004 would have been a PowerPC application.  After Apple migrated all of its future Macs to the Intel platform in 2006, it included in OS X Tiger (and later Leopard, and optionally in Snow Leopard) emulation software that would allow most PowerPC apps to continue to run in Intel.  This sofware was based upon technology that Apple licensed from a 3rd party and which Apple called Rosetta.
    Apple's license to include Rosetta in newer versions of OS X expired with Lion and now Mt. Lion.
    Hence no matter how well you use Terminal, or even Pacifist to install FCP 4.5, it just will NEVER run under Lion on your Mac.
    If your MacBook Air 11" is old enough (2010, MacBookAir3,1) to boot and run Snow Leopard, you can either partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it.  You can then "dual-boot" into Snow Leopard when you want to run FCP 4.5 or into Lion when you need iCloud or otherwise.
    Alternatively you can install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8 on any 11" MacBook Air and have FCP 4.5 running concurrently with Lion, such as here where the PowerPC app Appleworks is running on a Lion Mac:
                                  [click on image to enlarge]
    Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping costs at 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only).

    NOTE: You are confusing your version with Final Cut Express 3.5 and Final Cut Studio 2, both of which will run in Lion, but whose installers have problems in Lion and Mt. Lion due to a "bug" in the installer program.  For those versions, as pointed out in Jeremy Johnstone's blog, using Terminal (or alternatively, using Pacifist) to install will achieve success in using those versions in Lion.

    NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder. You'll need to do it again after each system update that's applied.

  • How to install patches with .bin extension

    I have downloaded Solaris_JDK_1.2.2_07_sparc.bin patches, but how can
    i install this ?? It is not like .tar.gz.....Help

    Hi,
    Did you download the patches or the JDK kit?
    Based on the file you said you downloaded it looks like you downloaded the whole JDK 1.2.2_07 kit. If you wish to install this all you have to do is download or move the file to where you want it to install and change the permissions on the file so you can execute it (chmod 755 Solaris_JDK_1.2.2_07_sparc.bin) then in a terminal just type:
    #Solaris_JDK_1.2.2_07_sparc.bin.
    This will install it for you. Make sure you update your path and any links that might be pointing to older versions of the JDK to the new JDK you just installed.
    If you it was the patches you ment to download the file you download should look something like "1.2.2_07_patches_sparc_OSVERISON.tar"
    to see what patches you have installed in a terminal type:
    #showrev -p
    To install the patches you need to extract the patch archives you wish to install. And then issue the following command:
    #patchadd -M <your_patch_directory> <patch-id>
    Please also consult the README files that come along with the patches as they might be of use to you also.
    Hope This Helps
    Regards,
    Andrew
