How to install windows 7 through a bootable usb?
I had tried to install windows 7 on my imac running os lion through a bootable usb as it's superdrive is broken.
Firstly I created the bootable usb of windows 7 from my friend's laptop using the instructions on this website
http://windows.appstorm.net/how-to/windows-7/how-to-create-a-windows-7-installat ion-usb-drive/
but bootcamp would raise an error saying disk could not be found. So I modified the info.plist file from bootcamp package contents and created an iso of the bootable usb drive. Bootcamp then allowed to create a windows install usb through the iso and partitioned the hard disk too but after doing so the computer restarted with a black screen and a message ' insert boot disk and press any key'. Now I've deleted the windows partition and really need help installing windows 7.
You can only install Windows 7 from an USB drive if your Mac didn't come with the SuperDrive.
I know that you can modify the Boot Camp Assistant Info.plist to show the option to create a bootable USB drive, but the problem is that the firmware of your iMac doesn't allow it. Use a Windows 7 DVD

Does anybody knows how to install Windows 7 from a USB drive on 2010 MacBook Air running Lion?
Tell my wife that!
This is the best I can do. This way you can use the 2011 MBA way to do things.
Look for the post from @jacktourist. (on page 2 about half way down) This seems to be the easiest.
There are a couple of more similar to this with pictures I've seen around but can't remember where.
Here's another search with added info. It's easier then it sounds. -
How to install Windows 7 from a USB drive!
This is even easier than installing Windows XP from a USB drive, and will also reduce the time taken to install Windows 7, it took me about 15 minutes!
The advice in the guide is also applicable to installing Vista.
You need basically:
a USB flash drive at least 4GB in size
a Windows 7 DVD
To sum up:
Format your USB drive, with the NTFS filesystem
Open Command Prompt as an administrator, and run the Bootsect.exe program off the Windows 7 CD to make the USB drive bootable
Copy the contents of the Windows 7 DVD to the USB drive
Restart your PC, press F11 (or whichever key it is) to access the Boot menu, and select your USB drive to boot from

I have done this and it is simple.
I cleaned and (re)formated an 8GB flash drive under Windows7 using diskpart. I chose quick format and a fat filesystem. It doesn't need to be ntfs. I had diskpart mark the partition active. I copied the DVD contents to the flash drive. I also made a folder on it for motherboard drivers.
After that, I booted the drive on a new machine. Windows7 setup came up, and didn't find any hard drives, other than the USB flash drive. I clicked the button to load drivers, and pointed it to the folder I had copied them to on the flash. Windows installed without problems.
Hi bnborg..Do u mind sharing with me your motherboard driver folder? I have the MSI U135DX Netbook and each time I hit the button to install Windows 7 it asks me for some mobo driver...Think i might need it to get tru with a successful install.. -
How do install Windows 7 from a USB optical drive?
I have a 27" 2013 iMac with no optical drive so I borrowed an Apple USB portable optical drive. How do I install Windows on BootCamp from the USB Optical drive?
iirc, you won't be able to or at least you shouldn't, it will take much longer than using a usb install
CHECKLIST
use only a +8gb USB2 flash drive
disconnect ALL devices except kb, mouse
STEPS
do a PRAM reset
open disk utility, confirm you have 1 partition (‘mac HD’ unless you renamed it) and repair permissions TWICE
dl a windows ISO
insert your usb flash drive and open boot camp assistant, choose all options making sure you used the new ISO just dl'd
if you get an error that the windows support software is unavailable, manually dl it here, put it on a separate USB2 drive and install by clicking setup.exe after windows is installed

I have an intel based mac with 10.6.8 mac os x. How to install windows 7 using usb as the bootcamp doesnot have the option of creating a bootable usb. please help
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install Windows from a USB drive in one of these computers:
- MacBook Pro with Retina display.
- Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
- MacBook Air.
- iMac (Late 2012).
If you don't have any of these Macs, you can't install Windows through a USB drive. Instead, buy Windows on a DVD. Follow Apple's steps > http://support.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1519/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6. pdf -
how to install Windows 8 or 8.1 on linpus linux with usb? I have Acer aspire E5-551G-t16q.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook Pro is not designed to install Windows through an USB drive, so do not use this option. You are getting a white screen because your MacBook cannot start up from the USB drive with Windows.
Instead, use a DVD with Windows, so you will be able to install Windows. Follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf

2011 MBP 15", how to install Windows 8 via USB?
I successfully got my Windows 8 installation files on a USB. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and no longer have the option to install Windows from another source. How can I install Windows 8 off my USB? BootCamp Assistant only offers the CD option.
Best regards. On computers which Apple shipped with an Optical drive, then the Boot Camp utility expects you to use that optical drive to install your Windows OS. Since the 2011 MBP shipped with an optical drive, the Boot Camp utility expects you to boot the Windows installer from that drive.

You can delete the partition in Boot Camp Assistant or use Camptune to modify it -
I want to install Windows 7 on my 2010 MacBook Air running Lion - Bootcamp Assistand 4.0.1 from a USB drive. I've done this in the past when I was running Snow Leopard and the process was rather easy but now Lion updated the Bootcamp Assistant so i'm no longer able to create a MBR partition without a Super Drive installed. Does anybody managed to do that? Thank you.
The old process working on Snow Leopard:

How to install Windows 8.1 on Haswell MBP
How do you get Windows 8.1 to do a clean install on a Haswell based rMBP?
The simplest answer to this problem is to manually install Windows using Microsoft tools. I have a brand-new MBPr, 15", 512gb flash, 16gb, with the nVidia discrete graphics, running Mac OS X 10.9 (build
13A3017). Here's what I did (you'll need two USB flash drives for this procedure):
1) Obtain the Windows 8.1 ISO from MSDN or other source;
2) Obtain the free Microsoft Windows 7 USB tool: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
NOTE: Although it indicates Windows 7, it works with any version of Win7 or Win8, including Win8.1. Follow the instructions to create your Windows 8.1 bootable USB drive.
3) In Mac OS X, run the boot camp assistant to create the USB flash installation drive per normal, including partitioning the disk for Boot Camp, etc. Just go through the motions as if you're going to install via Boot Camp, including downloading the Windows Support files.
4) When done with that, the Mac will reboot in order to start the Boot Camp installation... you will need to swap out the USB drives at this point, removing the Boot Camp USB and inserting the "Win7 USB"-created boot drive. Don't worry if you miss the boot cycle, you can just reboot holding the option key and be sure to select the Windows boot device (orange).
5) Now the Windows installation will begin using Microsoft Windows instead of Boot Camp method, and complete normally using the partition you created in Step 3. Several reboots later (be sure to hold option every time it reboots so you can select the new Windows boot device (not the orange one anymore) you will have Windows installed.
6) Go through the motions creating your Windows account, etc, and when you get to the desktop, insert the Boot Camp USB and navigate to the BootCamp folder. Here are the setup files with drivers, etc. Just click "setup.exe" to run your BootCamp support installation.
7) Done. -
I want to install Windows 7 on my MBP mid 2012 but in Boot Camp does not appear the check box: "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version". I continued with making the USB bootable with Windows 7 but then when I restart and boot with the USB I still can't install Windows because then I receive an error: ""Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style."
From OS with Boot Camp I didn't manage to make a partition for Windows instead I made one with Disk Utility (formated FAT).
After booting from USB that partition was also formated into NTFS necessary for Windows. Still the same error.
Any idea how to install Windows on my MAC?My Windows copy is a X64.
MBP mid 2012 with Mountain Lion 10.8.3.
Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP91.00D3.B08
SMC Version (system): 2.2f41
Should have:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
MacBookPro9,2
MBP91.00D3.B08 (EFI 2.9)
If you are refering to this I tried to update the EFI version (I see only SMC version 2.9 as a diferrence of what I have) but on installing I received an error: "This software is not supported on your system." -

Well if your trying to install XP on a USB thumb drive, it's possible, but you can't do much and can't save changes, certainly can't boot the Mac from it and use XP. Can boot other PC's with it though. Your going to need to install Bootcamp and XP then use that to make the XP bootable USB thumb drive.
http://www.intowindows.com/bootable-usb/
If your trying to install XP on a external USB drive and then boot the MacBook Pro, it might work, still need OS X on the external.
Mac's use EFI firmware as a "BIOS" and then "Bootcamp" creates a hybrid Master Boot Record and simulates the BIOS of a real PC in order to get Windows to install.
I guess your first step would be to learn everything about Bootcamp, get Windows working on your Mac first, then find out how to clone your OS X, HFS+ formatted partition over to a external drive, then create the Bootcamp process while Option booted form the clone, then image Windows XP using Winclone to the external Bootcamp partition.
You can ask around in the Bootcamp forums how to go about this, because I know it can be done, still need OS X (even a tiny portion) on the external USB drive but you can set it to boot directly into Windows.
