How to set default search engine in Firefox for Android?
Hi. I want to set a non-Google search engine as the default in Firefox on Android. I have installed the search engine as an add-on and it is working fine, but I would like to use it as the default search, rather than having to select it each time.
Couldn't find the answer on here or anywhere else.
Please note this only relates to Android.
Thanks!hello eggzzz, are you updated to the latest version? this should now be possible in firefox 23 for android in the addons manager:

Error message trying to install new search engines
I am running Firefox 19.0.2 installed yesterday on a new desktop PC at the office. (Old PC failed to boot on Monday.) I have completed most of my customization without difficulty. However, when I try to install new search engines, it doesn't seem to matter which one, I get a pop-up error message:
"Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plug-in."
I had no problems installing new search engines under Firefox 16 3rd quarter of last year when I started this job. Why am I unable to install search engines in FF 19?Hello lafritz65, '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
thank you -
How to add a search engine manually to Firefox. (No, not via add ons)
How to add a search engine manually to Firefox?
For example, what should I do add a custom search engine? It is not available via add-ons. When I go to the search page, Firefox doesn't detect it and it doesn't prompt me or allow me to add it as a search provider. I am looking for options similar to that in Chromium browser.
let's say for instance, if I want to add redhat bugzilla to my search providers, I can go to search settings and just add https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=%s
Is there any similar option available in Firefox?I use these;
'''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-to-search-bar/ Add to Search Bar]''' {web link}
Make any pages' search functionality available in the Search Bar
'''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/context-search/ Context Search]''' {web link}
Expands the context menu's 'Search for' item into a list of
installed search engines, allowing you to choose the engine
you want to use for each search.
'''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchthissite/ SearchThisSite]''' {web link}
Allows you to search the website currently viewed with
the website's internal search engine (and not the default
FF search engine or an external engine) -

Can't install Startpage search engine plug in.
When I attempt to install Startpage search engine I get this message: "Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plugin"
I DO already have Firefox 4 installed and am using it to install Startpage plugin.
How can this problem be resolved???Ok, I was able to successfully install Startpage search engine by going directly to the Startpage website.
The problem exists only when attempting installation directly through Firefox add-ons. -
How to add Custom Search Engines to Search Bar
In the past I managed to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' (Windows Version) by just right-clicking that site's own 'search bar' and choosing 'Add to search bar'. I had no third party plugin installed to do this. It was provided by Firefox itself.
Or am I mixing up this feature with Google's 'Add Custom Search Button' ?
Anyhow, is there a way to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' from any website, WITHOUT having to:
* install an add-on (like: Add to Search Bar 2.0)
* acquire search engines on 'mycroft.mozdev.org'
* acquire search engines from 'Manage/Add Search Engines' from the drop-down menu in the search bar ?
Thanks!Just made this [http://www.tobtu.com/customsearch.php custom search creator] to do this since I couldn't find one either.
Although I wouldn't trust a stranger so here's the hard way:
Install Apache (lamp/wamp whatever) or get free web hosting from some site.
blah.html:
<a onclick="window.external.AddSearchProvider('http://localhost/blah.xml');">blah</a>
blah.xml:<br />
<br />
<pre><nowiki><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<OpenSearchDescription xmlns="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/">
<ShortName>Blah</ShortName>
<Description>Blah blah</Description>
<Image width="16" height="16">data:image/png;base64,BlahBlahBase64AndUriEncoded%2B%2F</Image>
<Image width="16" height="16">http://blah/OrJustAUrl.png</Image>
<Url type="text/html" method="get" template="https://blah/?blah={searchTerms}"/>
</OpenSearchDescription></nowiki></pre>
Now go to http://localhost/blah.html and click the link. -

How to set another search engine in safari?
hi all
can anybody tell how to set another search engine than google/yahoo in safari (e.g. Bing)?
thank youAt this stage, I don't know of any workarounds (or available plugins) for Safari for Windows 4.0.4 that allow you to put a different search engine option in the search field.
The workaround I've been using is to pin a Bing window into my Top Sites.
You can send an enhancement request to Apple about it. Although it doesn't look to be set up for it, if you bring up your Menu Bar and go "Help > Report bugs to Apple", you can use that bug report form to ask for enhancements. I was skeptical about that to begin with, but apparently they check that for feature enhancement requests, according to the following document. (It's mentioned right down the very bottom.)

When I use a search engine in Firefox, whether it be google, or Yahoo, the links found by the search engine, re-direct me somewhere else. For instance when I searched for Places to Buy PC Games. www.gamestop.com popped up. When I clicked the link, it took me to some laptop hardware site. But if I type in the url for Gamestop, it takes me to their website. This has happened for several searches, several different links. I tried Internet Explorer thinking it may be a problem with the search engines. But IE is working fine for this.
This type of behaviour can be caused by malware. Try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:
* [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Malwarebytes]
* [http://www.superantispyware.com/ SUPERAntiSpyware]
* [http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Ad-Aware]
* [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Windows Defender]
* [http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html Spybot S&D]
This site may also be of use - http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2010/02/remove-google-redirect-virus.html
If the above malware scanners do not find any malware or can not clear it, you should consider posting in one of these forums for specialized malware removal help:
