and you are trying to use a sim from another carrier
and only that original carrier can unlock the iPhone -
Updated to ios5 and now Iphone says "Sim not valid"
I updated my Iphone to ios5 last night and the install went smoothly and worked fine until i went to turn it on and reactivate it after the restore. after i put in all the settings on the opening screens it went to try and activate the phone and it said "sim not valid". It says that your sim card cannot have a pin code which could be the problem but i dont think i ever set a pin code and it seems like this is a really ******** thing to get in the way. Do they ever tell you to disable your pin code during the install? I never saw anything but i was doing other stuff at the time so i was distracted. Anyone know how to fix this besides wasting more of my time by going to the nearest apple store?

If you are getting an error message saying that your sim card is invalid, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

Specifcally -
Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
Toggle Airplane mode On and Off.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Check for a carrier settings update. Tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear.
Remove the SIM Card and verify that it is a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it is not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
Restore the iPhone.
If you still are unable to resolve this issue, contact Apple support for further assistance.

I have a problem with my Iphone: I purchased a factory unlocked iPhone 4S in a The Source Store in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. I´m from Brazil but now I am living in Israel and the fact that the phone is factory unlocked was necessary for me to use it in both countries ( Brazil and Israel). After my trip to Canada, I arrived to Brazil and inserted my micro-sim into the new iPhone. It showed the "Activate iPhone" screen BUT it won’t activate. It says "SIM not valid" and "Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier´s store to receive a replacement SIM card”.
Now I am living in Israel and the same situation continues: I inserted one Israelian micro-sim into the Iphone and it showed the "Activate iPhone" screen BUT it won’t activate. It says "SIM not valid" and "Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier´s store to receive a replacement SIM card”.
In Israel we don’t have Apple Stores and i can´t have access to one, so now i have an iPhone 4S i cant not eve use as an iPod, leaving it totally useless.

BernardThe Source in Canada was formally know as Radio Shack and they do sell iPhones.. Only for Bell and Virgin Canada.

What does it say on your receipt?
As Bell and Virgin do not unlock iPhones you will need to sell that phone to someone in Canada and get an unlocked phone directly from Apple. -
Replacement iPhone saying sim not valid.
I just recieved my replacement iphone 4 today, when I turn it on it says insert sim to activate, when I do that it says sim not valid but on top left displays vodaNZ(as im from nz). Keeps saying insert the sim your iphone came with. It doesn't say activate your ipone using apple id and stuff like that. All it says is insert sim to activate. Could it be a corrupt sim or hardware issue? Help Please!
Try a different sim if you have one and see if that works. If it does then the sim is no good.

Yes, contact the carrier the iPhone is locked to.
Only they can officially unlock the iPhone and if you qualify. No one else. -

Sorry, you can't. If your phone is carrier locked, you will need a sim card from that carrier, to activate it.

How do I bypass the 'SIM Not Valid' error on iPhone 5?
I've read various forum posts and have still yet to come to a conclusion on this.
Just to be clear, the phone I have just purchased is an iPhone 5, and I purchased it from my brother who bought it brand new from an apple store and is definitely UNLOCKED.
For whatever reason, either Apple or EE has made it so I cannot use a Vodafone sim.
I have already tried to activate the phone as normal with an EE sim, and it worked until I removed the sim and tried my vodafone sim with the newly activated phone to which I was told SIM Not Valid and could not get back onto my phone.
Any help would be appreciated.Started to look into doing this earlier, any tips on getting the serial number when its in this state?

Iphone 5 was sent to get unlocked but 'sim not valid'
My phone was given back to me on wednesday the 21st Januray after giving it to get unlocked on monday 19th january. The phone was locked to vodafone and now should be on giffgaff and unlocked to all networks.
The guy said it can take upto 3-5 days for the phone to work with the new giffgaff sim, it is not the 5th day and it is still not working and it says
SIM not valid - the sim card that you currently have installed in this iphone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iphone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iphone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact apple for more information.
When i take the sim out, i am able to use the iphone in terms of going onto apps and only using wifi but it says no service due to no sim being in the phone.
the carrier on the settings says giffgaff 17.0 which is why i think the phone should be unlocked but is not working
i have been advised to 'reset network settings' but im scared this might lock the phone back as the phone is unlocked

The ONLY way to unlock an iPhone is for the Carrier who holds the lock to process the release and then follow this process

It seems in your case the hack failed .........................and has screwed your iPhone . -

Your iPhone was jailbroken or hacked to unlock it from the original wireless
carrier and the update has relocked the iPhone to that carrier. Contact
them to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Be advised that the damage done to iOS by jailbreaking/hacking has been
known to prevent a legitimate unlock from successfully completing. -

Hey guys the same happened to me with Factory unlocked iPhone 4S from apple store switzerland.
I took it back to Apple store, and replaced with a new one that worked perfectly.
The Genius at apple told me it is the only way... sorry for the bad news my friend in vietnam.

There is no such thing as an "unlock code" for an iPhone. If someone sold you one you have been scammed. iPhones are unlocked by the carrier the phone is locked to updating the master iPhone database maintained by Apple.
